Common pathways after getting GMC registration. Foundation programme(FY1 & FY2)-Core Training ( CT1 & CT2)-Speciality Training (ST3-ST7) Foundation programme(FY1 & FY2)-GP (ST1-St3) Foundation programme(FY1 & FY2)-Run through Posts Like A&E/anaesthesia/Radiology (ST1-ST6)
Foundation Programme: Consists of 2 years ,after Fy1 you can apply for full GMC registration .For foreign medical graduates ,if you have done house job in your own country you don't need to do FY1 and can directly apply for full GMC registration after PLAB. Both FY1 and FY2 can be done separately as-well( in contrast to full 2 year programme). They can be either training or non-training(There is no difference in actual work ,it is just recognition of these posts & Training jobs are progressive and preferable when you apply for further jobs).Even if you get a non- training job you can ask your consultant to sign a competency document for you for that stage and u can apply for next level. Note non training jobs can be named as (Trust grade, clinical fellow, SHO etc with no actual difference) Because of RLM(resident labour market )rules a non UK/EU person is preferred down the list for any job so chances of getting a training job become quite less due to obvious reasons. however these chances improve as you move up the ladder of training .For example these days getting into a full foundation programme is near to impossible, however if you do your house job back home and do FY2( training /Non training ) in UK and get a competency document from your consultant for Fy2 you can apply for Core training .chances of getting core training are much brighter specially in medicine .please see for more details. http://www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/pages/home
CORE TRAINING : This consists of 2 years ( medicine /Surgery) and you are expected to complete MRCP/MRCS to get a certificate of core training & progress to next level. please see following for more details. www.ct1recruitment.org.uk www.surgeryrecruitment.nhs.uk www.gprecruitment.org.uk Speciality Training : This starts after core training in most cases & you need to complete ur MRCP/MRCS to apply for it. This can vary from 3 -7 years depending upon individual speciality . please see following for details: www.st3recruitment.org.uk
