R e c t o r With this brochure we provide you with an over- view of the developments at the University of Innsbruck in 2013. The numbers clearly show that despite difcult circumstances the University can look back on a successful year. One aspect that stands out is our alma maters increasingly inter- national character: Almost 38 percent of students studying in Inns- bruck come from EU and non-EU countries. Eight percent of the scientic staff were not born in Austria and 71 percent of University of Innsbruck publications in Web of Science were co-authored with international scholars. The top position in international university rankings conrm the exceptional international networking success: In a special ranking of the Times Higher Educa- tion Ranking the University of Innsbruck ranked seventh in the category International Outlook and is, thus, the only Austrian university to rank among the top ten worldwide in this category. The University of Innsbruck was founded in 1669 and is the biggest and most important research and educational institution in western Austria. Today it is comprised of almost 26,000 students and more than 4.000 staff and faculty members. 16 faculties provide a broad spectrum of programs in all elds of study. Academics teach and research in the diver- se scientic elds of humanities, science, economic and social sciences, theology, law, architecture, engineering and teachers' training. Five major research areas strengthen and sharpen the prole of the Universitys research branch: Alpine Space Man and Environment Academics at seven faculties study human inu- ences and their impacts on the Alpine ecosystem and the role of the Alpine space in cultural ex- changes between north and south. Research is aimed at developing strategies for the sustainable utilisation and development of the Alpine Space. Cultural Encounters Cultural Conicts The fate of humanity has always been determined by cultural encounters and conicts. It has become indispensable for the modern world to understand their causes and effects. Studying these topics in an interdisciplinary approach has been a long- standing tradition at the University of Innsbruck. U n i v e r s i t y

I n n s b r u c k University of Innsbruck Center for Molecular Biosciences This integrative and multidisciplinary research and teaching center focuses on the investigation of the structure, function and interaction of bio- logical macromolecules and small molecules that are relevant for cell growth, metabolic activity and development. Physics Physics is not only the scientic foundation for our understanding of nature but also the basis for technological innovation. Scientists of the Uni- versity of Innsbruck have built many international networks in astrophysics, astroparticle physics, ion and applied physics as well as quantum physics. Scientic Computing Today complex scientic questions can be ob- served and simulated in detail by using highly sophisticated mathematical methods, innovative computer models and new supercomputers. All research activities in the IT sector and e-sciences are concentrated in this research area. Additionally, there are 33 Fields of Research and 4 interdisciplinary Re- search Platforms with various faculties collaborating. They promote re- search networks and improve the international visibility of research.
