MANPADS "Strela-3"

The result of further development of portable SAM systems such as "Strela-2" and
"Strela-2M" was the complex "Strela-3" which had improved combat and technical
characteristics, provided combat aircraft and helicopters, flying on a collision course with
speeds of up to 260 m / with maneuvering and overloads up to 3 units., as well as flying to
the Dogon courses at speeds up to 310 m / s and maneuvering overloads up to 5-6 units.
Among the new technical solutions and higher combat and operational characteristics of
the complex were:
fundamentally new thermal seeker with a deep-cooled, providing a sensitivity two
orders of magnitude higher than the sensitivity of the GOS complex "Strela-2M",
which allowed for the shooting on a collision course for aircraft and helicopters, as
well as to change their tactics and parameter adjustment when shooting at Dogon
courses;
ensuring operability of the complex when shooting at Dogon courses in any
background situations;
development of the trigger, which allowed to launch automatically on target in the
area start at shooting on a collision course.
Complex "Strela-3" was to unify the complex "Strela-2M", which simplifies setting it on
mass production and development of the troops.
Development of a portable air defense missile systems "Strela-3" (9K34) with 9M36
missiles has been set on the same Decree, in which work began on the SAM system
"Strela-2M". Create glubokoohlazhdaemoy seeker was instructed new co-executor - CB
Kiev factory "Arsenal" MOS (chief designer head IK Polosin).

The joint tests of the complex in the 9M36 missiles in launch tube 9P59 and trigger
9P58M passed on Donguzskaya range from November 1972 to May 1973 (Dmitriev, head
of the landfill, DC), under the leadership of the commission headed by D.A.Smirnovym .
When trials were identified and corrected deficiencies associated with the lack of
reliability of the element base-board equipment Zour. By an Order of 18 January 1974 the
complex was put into service. State Prize for his creation were awarded LG Deev, EA
Olejnikov, AS Yablonsky, MN Dictate IK Polosin, VV Golovatenco, Y. Fedorovskij, GV
Izyurov, AM Cheprakov other.
During the tests were confirmed and identified the following significant advantages of
portable air defense missile systems "Strela-3" compared with a set of "Strela-2M":
through the use of a rocket in a heat seeker sensitive and either the shooting jet and
turboprop aircraft on a collision course at ranges up to 2500 meters and at altitudes
from 30 to 3000 m;
significantly enhanced thermal protection seeker from background noise when
shooting at Dogon courses;
extended shooting capability in adverse weather conditions (rain, snow, fog) and
in dusty air (with the goal of visibility).
The complex "Strela-3" is more reliable rocket firing at a target with a jet engine on a
collision course by defining the start and automatic capture zone boundary starting from
the radiation from the target. The visual differences of the complex became a ball-cylinder
power unit in a launch tube.
Missiles of the complex was almost entirely borrowed from missiles "Strela-2M".
Mass of the rocket was 10.2 kg, height - 1427 mm.
The Commission on testing complex 9K34 offered suggestions to further improve the
portable SAM systems in the areas of:
increase the effectiveness of fire;
improvement of security from organized IR interference
improve the security of the background noise when shooting on a collision course;
ensure the fire at night;
reduce the weight of the complex;
development of more sophisticated means of warning, detection, identification and
management of fire in terms of improving their performance to ensure timely
shooting purposes, convenience and reduce the load on the mind-body gunners.
