Public Health Information for EHPs
Putting the Pieces Together
You are never too old to learn and I must admit
attending the recent Health + Care exhibition at Excel in
London was a real eye opener. Like many EHPs my
experience of commissioning is very limited so putting
me in a hall full of companies trying to sell everything
from dietary supplements to ambulances it took a while
to acclimatise. When I did nd my feet though it became
apparent that the wider determinants of health was not
an area that many people had even considered. From a
sales point of view it seems a lot easier to try to treat
the symptoms instead of stopping the cause. It also
makes commercial sense, no cause, no symptoms, no
need for a cure, no long term business model. What
really stood out though was one conversation I had with
a representative of a CCG. They had developed a tool to
look at re-admission rates for certain conditions which
seemed a good idea. On closer examination though it
became clear everything was very medically based and
didnt take account of the environmental setting
patients were discharged back to. This led to the
inevitable question; When you complete your work in
hospital and discharge your patients back into the
community do you know what they are going home to?
To me the consequences seemed obvious for example
send a COPD patient back into an Air Quality
Management Area without any support and its likely
you will see them again fairly shortly. I however quickly
learned that putting the pieces of this particular jigsaw
together is not something that everyone thinks about.
At one stage I even got told were light years from being
able to share that kind of information. Quite why I still
have no idea. Interestingly enough HealthWatch have
just begun an information gathering exercise called
What happens when people get sent home? (link
opposite) which provides an excellent opportunity for
everyone to mention the effects of the wider
determinants of health and hopefully start to t a
few more pieces together.
Have a great summer!
