A POLICY ON GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF
HIGHWAYS AND STREETS (THE GREEN BOOK),
6TH EDITION
A Policy on Geometric
Design of Highways
and Streets, 6th Edition,
2011, commonly referred
to as the Green Book,
contains the current
design research and
practices for highway
and street geometric
design. Developed by the
Technical Committee
on Geometric Design, a technical committee of the
Subcommittee on Design, the document provides
guidance to highway engineers and designers who strive
to make unique design solutions that meet the needs
of highway users while maintaining the integrity of the
environment. It is also intended as a comprehensive
reference manual to assist in administrative, planning,
and educational efforts pertaining to design formulation.
Design guidelines are included for freeways, arterials,
collectors, and local roads, in both urban and rural
locations, paralleling the functional classification used
in highway planning. This new edition was written in
coordination with the terms and concepts of the new
fourth edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide.
2011. 912 pp.

GUIDE FOR GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF TRANSIT
FACILITIES ON HIGHWAYS AND STREETS,
1ST EDITION
This guide provides a
comprehensive reference
of current practice in the
geometric design of transit
facilities on streets and
highways, including local
buses, express buses, and
bus rapid transit operating
in mixed traffic, bus lanes,
and high-occupancy vehicle
lanes, as well as bus-only roads within street and
freeway environments. It also covers streetcars and LRT
running in mixed traffic and transit lanes, and within
medians along arterial roadways. These guidelines are
based on a review of relevant AASHTO, TRB, and ITE
documents, as well as design reports provided by various
transit agencies. They are designed for use by public
agencies, practitioners, and developers in need of basic
information about planning, locating, sizing, designing,
and implementing transit facilities along roadways. 2014.

ROADSIDE DESIGN GUIDE, 4TH EDITION
This book presents a
synthesis of current
information and
operating practices
related to roadside safety
and is written in dual
unitsmetric and U.S.
Customary. This edition
supersedes the 2006
AASHTO publication,
which included an update
of the Median chapter.
The guide is intended to be used as a resource document
from which individual highway agencies can develop
standards and policies. It includes a synthesis of current
information and operating practices related to roadside.
It focuses on safety treatments that can minimize the
likelihood of serious injuries when a motorist leaves
the roadway. This guide was written for use by design
engineers and professionals involved in roadside safety
and is considered a significant toll that combines current
research with practical experience. 2011. 354 pp.

HIGHWAY SAFETY MANUAL, 1ST EDITION
The Highway Safety Manual
was developed to provide
highway professionals with
analytical tools to enhance
the consideration of safety
in the highway development
process. With no widely
accepted tools previously
available, the manual is
an effective resource for
highway agencies and safety practitioners, which contains
information and science-based tools to better quantify
and predict the expected impact of safety decisions in all
phases of highway project development: planning, design,
construction, operations, and maintenance. 2010. 972 pp.

GUIDE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF BICYCLE
FACILITIES, 4TH EDITION
This guide provides
information on how to
accommodate bicycle travel
and operations in most riding
environments. It is intended
to present sound guidelines
that result in facilities that
meet the needs of bicyclists
and other highway users.
Sufficient flexibility is
permitted to encourage designs that are sensitive to local
context and incorporate the needs of bicyclists, pedestrians
and motorists. However, in some sections of this guide,
suggested minimum dimensions are provided. These
are recommended only where further deviation from
desirable values could increase crash frequency or severity.
This guide has been updated from the previous guide
published in 1999. The fact that new guidance is presented
herein does not imply that existing bicycle facilities are
inadequate or unsafe, nor does it mandate the initiation of
improvement projects. The intent of this document is to
provide guidance to designers and planners by referencing
a recommended range of design values and describing
alternative design approaches. 200 pp.

MANUAL ON UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROL
DEVICES, 2009 EDITION
The MUTCD 2009 Edition
replaces the MUTCD 2003
Edition with Revisions
1 and 2. The MUTCD is
incorporated into Federal
regulations as the national
standard for traffic control
devices on all public roads
and bike paths. Make
sure you have the latest
edition. Written by the Federal Highway Administration
(FHWA), the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
(MUTCD) 2009 Edition is available as a high quality,
printed publication through a cooperative effort between
AASHTO, ATSSA, and ITE. The printed version includes:
a comprehensive copyrighted index, high-quality print
and color-matched graphics, a lay-flat binding designed
to withstand continued use, and larger format three-hole
drilled pages. Look for these and many other important
changes in the MUTCD 2009 Edition: interim approval
process for new traffic control devices; chapter on traffic
incident management; section on countdown pedestrian
signals; considerations for pedestrians and workers in
temporary traffic control zones; provision for in-street
pedestrian signs; recommendations for letter height on
street name signs; use of yield markings at un-signalized
mid-block pedestrian crosswalks; and provision for high
visibility clothing for workers. 2009. 864 pp.

CHAPTER 11, ERECTING MAILBOXES ON STREETS AND HIGHWAYS, ROADSIDE DESIGN GUIDE, 4TH EDITION
Chapter 11 of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide deals with privately
owned mailboxes, mailbox supports, and mailbox turnout designs.
Highway safety is the primary reason for a transportation agency to
become involved in this type of design. Limited data exist for vehicle-
mailbox collisions because most record systems do not specifically isolate
these types of crashes. However, the Fatality Analysis Reporting System
showed 294 deaths in 2008 in which an impact with a mailbox was the
first harmful event. Although this number includes crashes in which
the mailbox may not have been the direct cause of the fatal injuries, it is
significant because it is associated with an unnecessary hazard. Because
many jurisdictions incorporate this chapter by reference into their mailbox
regulations, the information in this chapter is frequently of interest to
non-engineers and private citizens. Consequently, AASHTO makes this
chapter available for purchase separate from the rest of the AASHTO
Roadside Design Guide at a reduced price. Its content is identical to that
found in the full book.

GUIDELINES FOR GEOMETRIC DESIGN
OF VERY LOW-VOLUME LOCAL ROADS
(ADT 400), 1ST EDITION
These guidelines address the unique design issues
highway designers and engineers face when determining
appropriate cost-effective geometric design policies for
very low-volume local roads. This approach covers both
new and existing construction projects. Because geometric
design guidance for very low-volume local roads differs
from the policies applied to high-volume roads, these
guidelines may be used in lieu of A Policy on Geometric
Design of Highways and Streets, also known as The
Green Book. Design values are presented in both metric
and U.S. customary units. 2001. 94 pp.

Context-sensitive solutions
(CSS) reflect the need to
consider highway projects as
more than just transportation
facilities. Achieving a flexible,
context-sensitive design
solution requires designers to
fully understand the reasons
behind the processes, design
values, and design procedures
that are used. This guide shows highway designers how
to think flexibly, how to recognize the many choices and
options they have, and how to arrive at the best solution
for the particular situation or context. This publication
represents a major step toward institutionalizing CSS
into state transportation departments and other agencies
charged with transportation project development.

PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE DESIGN
GUIDE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF BICYCLE FACILITIES, 4TH EDITION
This guide provides information on how to accommodate
bicycle travel and operations in most riding environments. It
is intended to present sound guidelines that result in facili-
ties that meet the needs of bicyclists and other highway users.
Sufficient flexibility is permitted to encourage designs that are
sensitive to local context and incorporate the needs of bicyclists,
pedestrians and motorists. However, in some sections of this
guide, suggested minimum dimensions are provided. These
are recommended only where further deviation from desirable
values could increase crash frequency or severity. This guide
has been updated from the previous guide published in 1999. The fact that new guidance
is presented herein does not imply that existing bicycle facilities are inadequate or unsafe,
nor does it mandate the initiation of improvement projects. The intent of this document
is to provide guidance to designers and planners by referencing a recommended range of
design values and describing alternative design approaches. 2012. 200 pp.

AASHTO GUIDE FOR CONSULTING
CONTRACTING, 1ST EDITION
The use of engineering
consultants by state
transportation agencies
continues to be
important in providing
the appropriate solutions
to transportation needs.
This publication replaces
the Guide for
Contracting, Selecting,

Consultants in
Preconstruction Engineering, published by AASHTO in
1996. In order to assess current practices, questionnaires
were developed for both state and consultant practitioners.
The responses showed significant growth in the volume of
work done by consultants and in the range of services
provided by consultants. The results of these surveys, along
with the collective experience and expertise of the
technical committee membership, were used to restructure
much of the guide and to update and expand the
discussion of current practices for the effective use of
consultants. 2008. 128 pp.

RAILINGS, 1ST EDITION
Glass fiber
reinforced
polymer (GFRP)
materials have
emerged as an
alternative
material for
producing
reinforcing bars
for concrete
structures. GFRP
reinforcing bars
offer advantages
over steel
reinforcement
due to their noncorrosive nature and nonconductive
behavior. Due to other differences in the physical and
mechanical behavior of GFRP materials as opposed to
steel, unique guidance on the engineering and
construction of concrete bridge decks reinforced with
GFRP bars is needed. These guide specifications offer a
description of the unique material properties of GFRP
composite materials as well as provisions for the design
and construction of concrete bridge decks and railings
reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars. 2009. 68 pp.

Covers seismic design for typical bridge types and applies to non-critical and
non-essential bridges. Approved as an alternate to the seismic provisions in
the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. Differs from the current
procedures in the LRFD Specifications in the use of displacement-based
design procedures, instead of the traditional force-based R-Factor method.
Includes detailed guidance and commentary on earthquake resisting elements
and systems, global design strategies, demand modeling, capacity calculation,
and liquefaction effects. Capacity design procedures underpin the Guide
Specifications methodology; includes prescriptive detailing for plastic hinging
regions and design requirements for capacity protection of those elements that

GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS FOR BRIDGES
VULNERABLE TO COAST STORMS, 1ST EDITION
This document contains comprehensive specifications
for the design of bridges vulnerable to coastal storms.
This guideline embodies new concepts not included in
previous design provisions. Bridge failures due to storm
surge and wave loading in Gulf Coast states during
recent years provided limited field data that was used to
further verify these methods. Also included are current-
induced forces guidelines that were the results of recent
research conducted at the Turner-Fairbank Highway
Research Center. 2008. 64 pp.
