Introduction

Brighter Tomorrow
As a company, GI operates under the assertion that, We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it
from our children.
In 1920, the founder, Ardeshir Godrej, gave a donation of Rs. 3 lakhs then considered a princely sum to the
Tilak Swaraj Fund to lift the spirits of the downtrodden. This gesture of philanthropy became a part of the Godrej
Corporate Policy. Giving back to communities became a way of saying Thank you to the 400 million Indians who
are Godrej loyalists.
As a corporate, GI has made giving back to society an integral part of its culture. Today, based on local, state
and national priorities, CSR activities are focused on four major areas:
n Health and Well being
n Inclusiveness and Diversity
n Environment Advocacy
n Community Service
25% of the shares of the Godrej Groups holding company, Godrej & Boyce, are held in a trust that is used for
investment in the environment, healthcare and education. Godrej believes that doing business is not just about
revenues and profits, but more about keeping land green, communities healthy, and children learning. Read on to
see the progress achieved in the last few years.

In this report
This is the second Sustainability Report that GI has compiled and presented. GI this year has attempted more GRI
disclosures than last year. With the learning of last two years, GI is now more aware of the areas that require
attention, and is working towards creating more measurable systems in the coming years. One such system is the
new sustainability software being implemented by October 2013.
GI hopes this report will give readers some idea of initiatives and the progress made in these areas over the last
few years. GI believes growth happens through exchange of ideas and opinions. So if you have some feedback to
share on this report, do mail GI at interiogreen@godrej.com. GI would love to hear from you.

Health and Well-being

Health and Well-being

Health and Wellness for our customers

Given the amount of contact time consumers spend with their furniture at offices and homes, this element of
urban living has become a significant contributor to health and well-being in the current scenario. Hence, GI has
made health and well-being an essential deliverable for all products and services, and it is a key performance area
for all employees of Godrej Interio. GI facilitates health and well-being through ergonomic design of products and
careful use of raw materials which aid in creating comfortable, safe, and healthy work environments for
consumers. GI also uses its expertise in these areas to create a healthy and positive work environment for its own
employees.

Employees spend more than 70% of their non-sleep time in offices, & are un-knowingly spending
almost all the time in badly designed / utilized offices spaces which are in-turn very dangerous to health.
Research conducted by Godrej Interio Ergonomic Cell has shown that today close to 71% of employees
complain about discomfort at work. Majority of these problems are due to un-ergonomic office furniture
design and more importantly, due to non-application of basic Office Ergonomics principles.
Parag Shastry (Ergonomic Expert, Godrej Interio)

Wellness @ Work
GI strongly believes that the best way to stay healthy is to know your health risks and work towards preventing
them. Godrej Interios Wellness @ Work Program provides employees access to information that helps them learn
techniques to develop a healthy lifestyle in the workplace and at home. The program's mission is to develop a
culture of wellness at the workplace. The four main initiatives of this program are listed below:

Wellness Tips
With this initiative, GI hopes to bring Wellness to the forefront for all the individuals, work-groups, and
organizations they make contact with. GIs Wellness Tips cover a vast range of topics; from good posture, to
office exercises, to optimal use of office gadgets and accessories. These tips are being emailed to more than
20,000 people every week for the past 2 years. With strategic linkages in the coming years, GI plans to reach out
to more than 100,000 people weekly, in the near future (Refer HW-01).

TOWARDS A GREENER PRODUCT PORTFOLIO

At GI, a very detailed, new product development cycle is followed. At each phase of its lifecycle, the health and
safety impact of all in-house designed products is assessed. These stages include manufacturing, transportation,
in-use and disposal. In FY 2011-12, GI conducted an ISO 14044 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on one of its most
produced product line - WISH. The purpose of the LCA was to get a more detailed understanding of the impacts
of the products over their whole life cycle and use that information in the development of new products.

With BIFMA LEVEL certification for WISH range of modular workstation, GI has taken its

GREENGUARD Certification
GI recognizes that, today, users spend 90% of their time indoors, hence the products that inhabit
these indoor spaces contribute to the quality of the indoor environment. With the massive scale of
the IT BPO sector boom, the office space per employee in India has decreased rapidly. Therefore, it
has become ever more important to
maintain good indoor air quality in these
confined spaces, with good furniture. Recognizing this, GI

With BIFMA LEVEL certification for WISH range of modular workstation, GI has taken its

sustainability drive to a new level. This is the first time a system furniture range has obtained BIFMA
LEVEL certification. This multi-attribute certification is extensive in nature, and assesses attributes

like LCA, Efficient use of material, Solid waste management and diversion, Energy efficiency and water efficiency,
GHG inventorization and reporting, Chemical management and reduction strategies, Social performance and

In FY 2012-13, GI focussed on expanding the scope of certification to Home business-line and to go for high level

GREENGUARD Certification
GI recognizes that, today, users spend 90% of their time indoors, hence the products that inhabit
these indoor spaces contribute to the quality of the indoor environment. With the massive scale of
the IT BPO sector boom, the office space per employee in India has decreased rapidly. Therefore, it
has become ever more important to
maintain good indoor air quality in these
confined spaces, with good furniture. Recognizing this, GI

Whatever Godrej Interio (GI) does, it shall be done safely. GI is committed to maintaining compliance with local and national

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) laws that govern performance, and aims to go beyond this compliance with
certification to OHSAS 18001 guidelines. GI operates in this manner, not only because they believe workplace health and

50

In that respect, working safely is a condition of employment at all its facilities.

GI believes that all accidents are preventable, as all hazards can be safeguarded either physically or through safe working
procedures. Therefore, Occupational Health and Safety training will take place at all levels of the organization and periodic
audits of the system will be conducted by management whose responsibility it is to ensure that injuries are prevented.
In efforts to build and support a culture that fosters and nurtures a safety mindset in the organization, employees will assume
defined responsibilities and accountability. To incentivise this, GI will hold different competitions to create awareness and
engage employees on OHS related aspects at the divisional and corporate level, and winners shall be suitably recognized.

Community Outreach

Community Outreach

In India where the gap between the have and the have-nots is large, Godrej has played an active role in enhancing
the quality of lives and education provided to the weaker sections of the communities it operates in. Essential
facilities and infrastructural support extended to families at the times they need it most can change the way the

around them.
Godrej Interio Community Outreach Statement
Godrej Interio is committed to giving back to the communities in which it operates. To do this most effectively, it
will enlist the participation of its employees to identify and commit resources of time, talent and funding.
Opportunities will be made available to offer input on areas of need in the community and potential projects to
address those needs.
At GI, community outreach initiative is broadly based on two approaches:
1) Philanthropy; and 2) Employee Engagement in community activities.
The philanthropy aspect is administered by The Pirojsha Godrej Foundation, Public Charitable Trust and the
organizations focus is on leveraging its vast human strength to contribute to community related activities. Some
of its 2012 Community Outreach activities, wherein Interioites participated in large numbers, are listed below:

Godrej Blood Donation Drive

Each year on the death anniversaries of its founders, Mr. N. P. Godrej and Mr. B. P. Godrej, an annual blood
donation camp is organized wherein employees, including Godrej Interio employees and their families, donate

Community Outreach

In India where the gap between the have and the have-nots is large, Godrej has played an active role in enhancing
the quality of lives and education provided to the weaker sections of the communities it operates in. Essential
facilities and infrastructural support extended to families at the times they need it most can change the way the
family lives and thinks in a matter of just 8-10 years. It is this difference that GI seeks to bring into the communities
around them.

GI has believed in working closely with nature, protecting and preserving it for decades. Godrej founders have had
the foresight to develop large chunks of urban land into mangroves and keep the delicately balanced eco-systems

Environment Conservation : A Way of Life at Godrej

Godrej Group (of which Godrej Interio is the second largest strategic business unit) is one of the pioneering
organizations in India to champion and create awareness about the link between the survival of planet Earth and
preservation of the ecosystem.
In Mumbai, a city grappling with issues such as environmental abuse, resource depletion, population explosion,
pollution, and more, Godrej - with its many environment projects, is changing the way the city breathes and is
helping it adopt a green philosophy.
Pirojshanagar, an industrial garden township of Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd., is a good example of just how a
business venture can be a friend of the environment. Godrej has the unique distinction of being the only corporate
house that maintains a 1750-acre mangrove forest which has an ISO certificate. The project has given a new lease
of life to different species of mangroves and mangrove inhabitants, animals, birds, reptiles, and water creatures.
For this outstanding work, Godrej was honored with the National Green Governance Award in 2005

Resource Consumption & Emission trends

Energy Conservation
Though the energy spends make up to hardly 2% of total manufacturing spend, at Godrej interio,
there is lot of emphasis on saving this precious resource. Every year planning for various energy
saving projects is done during the annual business planning meeting, where budgets are sanctioned
before the start of the new fiscal year.
Gis energy conservation drive is focused on three major areas, 1) Plugging of energy losses, 2) Avoidance of
energy usage in idling time, 3) Shifting to more energy efficient machinery and equipment. Based on these focus
areas for the fiscal year 2012-13, a specific energy reduction of 14.5% (as compared to baseline performance for
FY 2011-12) was achieved, due to projects like implementation of energy efficient motors with VFDs, use of auto
cut-off mechanisms for PT line pumps, replacement of old air conditioners with new Star rated energy efficient air
conditioners, and replacement of T5 tubelights with T8 variants (refer EA-01).
It is interesting to note that the most successful energy saving projects are ones initiated through Kaizens,
suggested by the employees working on these machines. GI strives to keep alive this innovative streak amongst
the employees by bestowing reward and recognition for efforts by employees in the direction of energy
conservation.

Grid energy. In FY 2012-13, with the Bhagwanpur Biomass plant functioning smoothly for major part of the year,
GI could significantly increase the Renewable component of its energy. Also with the supply chain issues sorted,

performance on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) parameters. In a typical office space, several such materials are used in
different quantities. In order to enable Interior Designers, as well as the users of indoor spaces, more easily assess
the IAQ performance of a set of materials used in a certain proportion for a given space; GI found that there was a
need to develop a scorecard which could assess the combined IAQ effect of a given combination of materials for
a given space. The scorecard that was developed by the Godrej Interio team can assess the IAQ score based on
this information. The score obtained by this tool can be used to determine to what extent a given combination of
materials is healthy for the users of the space. The scorecard also provides solutions for improvement, offering
options for alternative materials that have a better IAQ performance.

performance on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) parameters.
