caring and environment
In 1897, a young man named Ardeshir Godrej gave up pursuing a career in law and instead, turned to
lock-making. Ardeshir went on to make safes and security equipment of the highest order, and then stunned the
world by creating toilet soap from vegetable oil. His brother, Pirojsha Godrej, carried Ardeshirs dream forward,
leading Godrej towards becoming a vibrant, multi-business enterprise. Pirojsha laid the foundation for the

Brighter Tomorrow
As a company, GI operates under the assertion that, We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it
from our children.
In 1920, the founder, Ardeshir Godrej, gave a donation of Rs. 3 lakhs then considered a princely sum to the
Tilak Swaraj Fund to lift the spirits of the downtrodden. This gesture of philanthropy became a part of the Godrej
Corporate Policy. Giving back to communities became a way of saying Thank you to the 400 million Indians who
are Godrej loyalists.
As a corporate, GI has made giving back to society an integral part of its culture. Today, based on local, state
and national priorities, CSR activities are focused on four major areas:
n Health and Well being
n Inclusiveness and Diversity
n Environment Advocacy
n Community Service
25% of the shares of the Godrej Groups holding company, Godrej & Boyce, are held in a trust that is used for
investment in the environment, healthcare and education. Godrej believes that doing business is not just about
revenues and profits, but more about keeping land green, communities healthy, and children learning. Read on to
see the progress achieved in the last few years.
In this report
This is the second Sustainability Report that GI has compiled and presented. GI this year has attempted more GRI
disclosures than last year. With the learning of last two years, GI is now more aware of the areas that require
attention, and is working towards creating more measurable systems in the coming years. One such system is the
new sustainability software being implemented by October 2013.
GI hopes this report will give readers some idea of initiatives and the progress made in these areas over the last
few years. GI believes growth happens through exchange of ideas and opinions. So if you have some feedback to
share on this report, do mail GI at interiogreen@godrej.com. GI would love to hear from you.

Employees spend more than 70% of their non-sleep time in offices, & are un-knowingly spending
almost all the time in badly designed / utilized offices spaces which are in-turn very dangerous to health.
Research conducted by Godrej Interio Ergonomic Cell has shown that today close to 71% of employees
complain about discomfort at work. Majority of these problems are due to un-ergonomic office furniture
design and more importantly, due to non-application of basic Office Ergonomics principles.

Wellness @ Work
GI strongly believes that the best way to stay healthy is to know your health risks and work towards preventing
them. Godrej Interios Wellness @ Work Program provides employees access to information that helps them learn
techniques to develop a healthy lifestyle in the workplace and at home. The program's mission is to develop a
culture of wellness at the workplace. The four main initiatives of this program are listed below:
Wellness Tips
With this initiative, GI hopes to bring Wellness to the forefront for all the individuals, work-groups, and
organizations they make contact with. GIs Wellness Tips cover a vast range of topics; from good posture, to
office exercises, to optimal use of office gadgets and accessories. These tips are being emailed to more than
20,000 people every week for the past 2 years. With strategic linkages in the coming years, GI plans to reach out
to more than 100,000 people weekly, in the near future (Refer HW-01).

At GI, a very detailed, new product development cycle is followed. At each phase of its lifecycle, the health and
safety impact of all in-house designed products is assessed. These stages include manufacturing, transportation,
in-use and disposal. In FY 2011-12, GI conducted an ISO 14044 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on one of its most
produced product line - WISH. The purpose of the LCA was to get a more detailed understanding of the impacts
of the products over their whole life cycle and use that information in the development of new products.

On the path to the organizational mission of ZERO ACCIDENTS, GI focused on key indicators like hazard

incident reporting (314 reported) (refer HS-01) helped in ramping up its safety measures and reducing the number

Community Outreach
In India where the gap between the have and the have-nots is large, Godrej has played an active role in enhancing
the quality of lives and education provided to the weaker sections of the communities it operates in. Essential
facilities and infrastructural support extended to families at the times they need it most can change the way the
family lives and thinks in a matter of just 8-10 years. It is this difference that GI seeks to bring into the communities
around them.
Godrej Interio Community Outreach Statement
Godrej Interio is committed to giving back to the communities in which it operates. To do this most effectively, it
will enlist the participation of its employees to identify and commit resources of time, talent and funding.
Opportunities will be made available to offer input on areas of need in the community and potential projects to
address those needs.
At GI, community outreach initiative is broadly based on two approaches:
1) Philanthropy; and 2) Employee Engagement in community activities.
The philanthropy aspect is administered by The Pirojsha Godrej Foundation, Public Charitable Trust and the
organizations focus is on leveraging its vast human strength to contribute to community related activities. Some

Efforts have been made to reduce Carbon-dioxide emission rate by adopting strategies like consistent reduction
in electricity consumption, shifting from more carbon intensive fuels to low carbon intensive fuels, and the use of
renewable energy. GI is measuring its reduction with respect to the baseline from FY 2010-11.
As a part of Scope 3 reduction strategies, GI has started many small and big initiatives like:
In FY 2012-13, GI has completed documentation and Scope 3 emissions, and understand that related to raw
material transport and final product delivery have significant impact on the final product footprint. Hence, they
have initiated projects in area of outbound transport to bring down the overall carbon footprint.

EA-03 : (GRI-EN18) The trend for Scope 1 & Scope 2 emissions at Interio facilities
Hence, they
have initiated projects in area of outbound transport to bring down the overall carbon footprint.

include the use of water cascading techniques for pretreatment process and use of recycled water in

Each of GIs plants is equipped with an effluent treatment plant, ensuring that none of its facilities directly
discharges waste water into the environment. These plants provide GI with the opportunity to treat and reuse the
waste water again in its processes. However, the majority of the ETP treated water is used for gardening purpose.

As a first step to avoiding solid waste diversion, GI is focusing on restricting the generation of production waste.
Systematic deployment of strategies in this direction resulted in initiatives like redesigning or minor tweaking of
products to achieve better material efficiency, use of optimization software to order boards to size, coil
rationalization for sheet metal products to avoid shearing waste, use of waste board scrap for making block

The institutionalization of the Design for Environment program at Godrej Interio was one of the major successes
for the fiscal year 2011-12. The Green Initiative Cell, along with the Design team, worked on key areas like target
setting, parameter monitoring, and supplier data base formation, to get the final framework of the DfE program
ready by the end of March 2012. The DfE policy was formally rolled out in April 2012.
As a part of the DfE program, GI also plans to conduct full Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for all products having

with the first LCA report compiled, for WISH product line. Godrej Interio perceives the LCA as a tool to identify the
full range of environmental impacts associated with a product or a service at the various stages of its life cycle. In
that respect, GI treats the LCA as an important tool which will be helpful in the overall goal of reducing the
environmental impacts of GIs operations.
