Tech Note: Installing Toolbox 32 on PCs Running Windows Vista,
Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008
(May also apply to other Windows versions)

1. Cannot Run Toolbox 32 (Toolbox.exe) or Toolbox 32 Installer
(SETUP.EXE)
Microsoft introduced Data Execution Prevention (DEP) into Windows XP SP2. DEP closes
down a program that it suspects has malicious content.

DEP may generate the following error message when Toolbox 32 is run (as observed in
Windows Server 2008):



DEP may also prevent the Toolbox 32 installer (SETUP.EXE) from running.


How To Run SETUP.EXE or Toolbox.exe
1. If performing a fresh install of Toolbox 32, first copy the contents of the installation CD
to a folder on the PC eg. Copy CD to C:\TEMP\TOOLBOX
2. Using Windows Explorer, locate SETUP.EXE (if performing a fresh install) or locate
Toolbox.exe (after software has been installed by running SETUP.EXE). RIGHT click
on the file and choose Properties. Toolbox is located in C:\Program
Files\Kingfisher\Kingfisher Toolbox32 by default.

3. From the General tab, select all the text in the Location field as shown below for
Toolbox.exe

4. Press Ctrl + C on the keyboard to copy the text.
5. Right click the My Computer icon on the desktop and choose Properties.
6. Select the Advanced tab and click the Settings button in the Performance section as
shown below.

7. A window will appear entitled Performance Options. Click the Data Execution
Prevention tab and the window below will appear.

8. Select the option Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I
select:
9. Click the Add button that is no longer greyed out and a standard Open File window will
appear. Click in the File Name box and then press Ctrl + V on the keyboard to paste
the location of SETUP.EXE or Toolbox.exe into the box.
10. Click the Open button and the window will close and the software will now be visible in
the DEP exception list. Then click the Apply button and close all the open windows.
11. SETUP.EXE or Toolbox 32 should now run normally.

2. Cannot Open Help File
Microsoft stopped including the 32-bit Help file viewer in Windows releases beginning with
Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Microsoft Support provides WinHlp32.exe
downloads for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server
2008 R2. To rectify, please see Microsoft Support Article ID 917607

After installing WinHlp32.exe, You may receive the following error message:



To rectify, please follow the steps below:

1. Log on to Windows by using an administrator account.
2. Click Start ( ), type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the
Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation,
type the password, or click Continue.
3. On 32-bit versions of Windows locate the following registry subkey, and then click it:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft
4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
5. Type WinHelp, and then press ENTER.
6. Click the WinHelp key. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-
bit) Value.
7. Type AllowProgrammaticMacros, and then press ENTER.
8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
9. In the Value data box, type 1, click Hexadecimal in the Base area, and then click OK.
10. Exit Registry Editor.

3. Ladder Logic Displayed Incorrectly
When Toolbox 32 is installed on PCs running Windows Vista or Windows 7, ladder logic
may be displayed as follows:
