Preface
This document provides information on the JANUS ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface
application, which provides an interface between the JANUS access control system and
ThyssenKrupp lift control systems.
This version of the document relates to ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface version 1.0.0. It may
not include changes incorporated in later versions of the software.
This version of the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface is supported by JANUS version 4.2 and
above.
About the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface
The ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application is an optional part of the JANUS access
control system that allows JANUS to interface to a ThyssenKrupp lift control system.
The ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application allows information from the JANUS system
to be passed automatically to the ThyssenKrupp controller. For example, the lift system
can be informed which floors of a building a particular person is allowed to access.
About this guide
This User Guide is intended for the installers who will set up and configure the
ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application and people who will use and monitor the system
on a day-to-day basis.
It provides the following information:
An introduction to the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application. See Introduction on
page 7.
An explanation of configuring the system, including setting up relevant data in the
JANUS database. See Configuring the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application on
page 13.
Information about diagnostic messages. See Checking diagnostics on page 21.

Introduction
This section provides an explanation of the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application and
explains the requirements for its installation.
Overview of the system
The ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application is used to control which floors within a
building and which lift exits each individual can use.
The interface between the ThyssenKrupp system and the JANUS system is illustrated in
the diagram below:

The ThyssenKrupp lift control system uses Destination Selection Control (DSC) terminals
situated on each access floor.

These work as follows. The passenger selects a destination floor using a DSC terminal
with a touch-screen which is situated next to the left. The lift control system (LCS)
calculates which lift is to serve the call and informs the passenger which lift to use. There
are no floor selection buttons inside the lift car.
When used in conjunction with JANUS, the access control system defines which floors
can be selected. A card reader connected to the JANUS system is mounted adjacent to
the DSC. The person first presents a card to the reader. The ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface
informs the Lift Control System of the destination floors that this cardholder is
permitted to use (as configured in the JANUS database). Only permitted floors can be
selected on the DSC. For example, the selection panel may look like this:

Once the person has selected their required floor, the ThyssenKrupp system indicates
which lift the person is to use and instructs the lift to go to the appropriate floor once
the person has entered it.
The JANUS system maintains all the information about the access permitted to
individual card holders, and controls the card readers that are adjacent to the terminals.
The ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application communicates with both the Lift Control
System as well as with JANUS Comms at all times, passing information between the two
systems.
Once set up, the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application requires no user interaction but
can be left running for diagnostic purposes.

System operation
Each persons card defines:
Which floors they are allowed to enter from and exit to.
Which exits of the lift they can use (for example, to access different sides of the
building).
This data depends of the persons department, as set up in the JANUS database. For
example, the system could be set up so that someone working in the R&D department is
permitted to access Floor 2, Exit A and B, while someone in Accounts is allowed to
access Floor 4, Exit A only.
Prerequisites
This section details the prerequisites for the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application, and
explains how to install and starting the application.
Software requirements
The ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application is supported on the following operating
systems:
Windows XP
Windows 2003 Server
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Ensure you have the latest Service Pack installed.
The ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application needs to communicate with the JANUS
system, although it does not need to be installed on the same computer.
Licensing
The ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application requires a JANUS licence. The licence is
called External Reporting Device Extension, and its Task ID is RptDevXtn.
If necessary, an additional licence file (*.gtl) including this licence will be supplied to you.
You can install this from the JANUS Licence Manager (click Add Licence and locate the
licence file).
You can use JANUS Licence Manager to check that the appropriate licence is installed:


Database configuration
Before configuring the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application, you need to ensure that
all the information needed by the ThyssenKrupp system is set up correctly in the
database. In particular:
Ensure all Readers and Reader Groups associated with the lifts are configured
correctly. The Reader groups can be used to restrict a user from accessing certain
lifts.
Ensure all Cards for cardholders are set up correctly, including the Department
fields. This information defines which floors the users can access.
Ensure all Reporting Groups are set up correctly so that information is reported
within JANUS.

Installing the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface
The application is supplied as a single executable, called ThyssenKrupp.exe, which may
be provided on a USB memory stick or sent via email.
There is no installer. To install the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application, simply copy
the ThyssenKrupp.exe application to a suitable location on your system. We
recommend that you put it in the JANUS folder and create a shortcut on the desktop:

Configuring the ThyssenKrupp
Lift Interface application
The first time you start up the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface you need to set up all the
data that the system needs the system. This includes:
Setting up the communications data.
Setting up the terminals that represent the card readers that are associated with
the DSC terminals.
Defining which cardholders (i.e. members of specific departments) can access
which floors/sides.
Starting and logging on
To start up the interface, run the ThyssenKrupp.exe file or click on the icon on the
desktop. You can access the diagnostics pane as soon as you open the interface, but to
configure the system you need to log on.

To log on to the interface
1. Click the Logon button

2. The Logon dialog is displayed:

3. Enter a valid User ID and a Password (for example, the default Installer ID and
password).
Note: Both the User ID and Password must exist within JANUS, with suitable access
rights.
4. Click OK. The Setup and Communications Setup tabs on the main dialog are then
accessible.

Configuring the basic parameters
The first stage in setting up the system is to configure the parameters that define how
the application communicates with JANUS and the ThyssenKrupp system.
To set up the basic configuration parameters
1. Select the Communications Setup tab:

2. The Communications Address Setup panel allows you to configure how the
application communicates with JANUS and the ThyssenKrupp controller. Set up
these details as follows:
Jancomms Address The IP address or host name of the machine
where JANUS Comms is running.
ThyssenKrupp Primary Port The port number used by the ThyssenKrupp
system; normally this will be 1.
3. Click Save Configuration Data to save any changes.
You can check that communication has been established by clicking on the
Diagnostics tab:


The LEDs on the right hand side of the dialog indicate the communication to the
ThyssenKrupp controller. The CTS and DSR lights will flash to denote the ACK/NAK
responses from the Lift Control System. (For more details, see the Code card reader
provision document supplied by ThyssenKrupp.
Configuring the readers and destinations
The next stage is to set up the terminals and destinations on the Setup tab.
Terminals represent the card readers that are associated with the DSC terminals.
Destinations indicate which floors are permitted to member of specific
departments (i.e. cardholders).
Note: Suitable card/department/reader data must already be set up in the JANUS
database.

Setting up terminals
You need to define the various card readers that are associated with the DSC terminals.
You do this on the left-hand side of the Setup tab.
Note: If necessary, the ThyssenKrupp engineer should be able to aid in this set-up.

To set up a new terminal record
1. Choose the Setup tab.
2. In the left-hand pane enter details as follows:
Reader Name Choose the relevant reader from the drop-down list,
which is populated by all readers that have been set up
in JANUS.
Terminal ID Specify the ID of the relevant ThyssenKrupp DSC.
Connected to Lift Specify the lift number.
On Floor Specify the source floor number.
On Side Specify the side of the lift that is being called, A or B
(normally corresponding to the front/rear doors of the
lift).
3. Click Save to save the changes.

4. Continue to set up all the readers you need in the system. For example, the
following shows the set up of two readers, situated on Floor 1, Side A which call
cars 1 and 2 respectively:

To edit an existing terminal/reader record
1. Select the row to be edited and click the Edit Record button at the bottom of the
Terminal Setup pane (on the left-hand side).

2. You can then edit any of the settings.

To delete an existing terminal/reader record
1. Select the terminal to be deleted and click the Delete Record button at the bottom
of the Terminal Setup pane (on the left-hand side).

2. A confirmation message appears. Click OK to confirm.

Setting up destinations
The right pane defines what system does with the card read. When a card is presented
to reader, the floor the person is delivered to is dependent on the department they are
in. This information defined here is by the ThyssenKrupp lift control system when
allowing access following a card read.
Note: If necessary, the ThyssenKrupp engineer should be able to aid in this set-up.
To set up a new destination record
1. Choose the Setup tab.
2. In the right-hand pane, enter details as follows:
Department Choose the relevant department from the drop-down
list, which is populated by all departments that have
been set up in JANUS.

Floor Specify the floor that the members of this department
can access.
Side Specify the side of the floor that will open,
corresponding to the front/rear doors of the lift.

4. Continue to set up all the department access records you need in the system. For
example, the following shows the different access permitted for a number of
departments:


To edit an existing destination record
1. Select the destination to be edited and click the Edit Record button at the bottom
of the Destination Setup pane (on the right-hand side).

2. You can then edit any of the settings.

To delete an existing destination record
1. Select the destination to be deleted and click the Delete Record button at the
bottom of the right-hand Destination Setup pane (on the right-hand side).

2. A confirmation message appears. Click OK to confirm.


Checking diagnostics
To check that everything is operating correctly, you can check the Diagnostics tab. Note
that this tab is available from the user interface even when a user is not logged in.

The upper part of the window shows the state of the connections between the
ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application and JANUS Comms (shown on the left) and
between the ThyssenKrupp Lift Interface application and the ThyssenKrupp lift
controllers (shown on the right).
The lower part of the window shows messages sent and received between the various
systems.
The date and time of each message appears.

Changing the level of diagnostic reporting
By default the Diagnostic tab normally shows limited messages, including the details of
connections. You can change the setting to view all messages including heartbeat
reporting.
To list all diagnostic messages
Click Show Full Diags in the status bar:

Interface and the hardware controllers,
To view limited diagnostic messages
Once you are happy that the communications are OK, you can click Show Limited Diags
to switch the diagnostics back to limited reporting:

Clearing the event log
To clear the event log, click the Clear Event Log button in the status bar:
