DFG Software with DrillAhead

Hydraulics Module
Baroid Fluid Services DFG drilling fluids
graphics software provides the user with the
most accurate hydraulics modeling software
available to industry. This tool can allow the
user to simulate proposed drilling
conditions, allowing optimization of not
only the fluid properties but also the drilling
parameters. Accurate modeling allows the
user to look ahead of the bit, avoid future
problems and reduce NPT.
Some of the key parameters
modelled include:
Wellbore geometry
Hole angle and size
Drilling mode: sliding, rotating or mixed
ROP while sliding and/or rotating
Downhole fluid densities based on dynamic or
static profiles
Pump rates
Rotary speeds
Circulating and static intervals (drilling, sliding,
making connections, etc.)
Downhole rheology
Fracture generation
LCM particle size distribution
Effect of LCM on rheology
Output from drilling simulations focuses on annular
cuttings concentrations, including average cuttings
concentration as well as localized cuttings distribution in the
annulus, and equivalent circulating density (ECD).
Documented variance between DFG software-predicted and
actual ECD, as measured by PWD tools, is consistently less
than 1%. The DFG software is the only hydraulics modeling
program that accurately accounts for effects of drilling fluid
compressibility and thermal expansion on fluid density,
including the reduction in temperature while the mud
returns to surface through a long deepwater riser that causes
an increase in density, viscosity and rheological properties.
DFG software modeling is critical to operations where very
narrow margins between pore pressure (PP) and fracture
gradient (FG) exist.

Optimized Hole Cleaning
and ECD Management
Based on known rig equipment
specifications, DFG software can predict
the influence of pump output and pipe
rotation on drilling performance under a
variety of conditions and evaluate
available drillstring sizes for optimal hole
cleaning and hydraulics. The program
indicates when cuttings loading may be
expected to occur so that the operational
parameters can be modified to
compensate, and/or a sweep program
can be implemented.
Sweeps
DFG software models the impact of
sweeps on ECD, including high-viscosity sweeps,
low-viscosity weighted sweeps, and high-viscosity/
high-density sweeps.
Tripping Speed
Surge and swab pressures can be modeled and managed to
minimize the risk of breaking down the formation or
inducing wellbore stability problems while running pipe.
DFG software depicts running speeds and pressure impacts
at any point, allowing the operator to avoid excessive
running speeds while maximizing efficiency.
Wellbore Strengthening Modeling
WellSET treatments are engineered solutions designed
using DFG modeling software with DrillAhead hydraulics
module which:
Accurately predicts the ECD over the specific loss-prone
interval to be drilled
Calculates the width of a fracture that may be initiated in
this interval
Selects the appropriate type lost circulation material
(LCM) and optimal particle size distribution (PSD)
needed to efficiently prop and plug that fracture width
Determines the change in fluid rheology resulting from
the addition of the specialized LCM treatment and cycles
this information back into the ECD calculation to
improve ECD management throughout the interval
