1. Live in the Light
2. Your Song
3. Burn in Me
4. Beautiful Heart
5. Hold On
6. Sisters, Rejoice!
Main Narrator: On March 17, 1842, twenty women assembled and were organized as the Female Relief
Society of Nauvoo. When Joseph Smith established this organization, he said, I now
turn the key to you in the name of God and this Society shall rejoice.
A century and a half later that organization is now known as the Relief Society of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Never has the world seen an organization
like that of the Relief Society. Established by a prophet of God, sustained by priesthood
power, with over 5 million women in over 170 countries, this organization is truly a light
unto the world.
The pioneer women of Nauvoo were the embodiment of testimony and courage. They
built the mighty foundation upon which the Relief Society stands today. From many parts
of the world, these early Saints gained a testimony of the restored gospel and gathered at
Nauvoo. They left homes, loved ones, and all they had because of the testimonies that
burned in them.

Female Narrator #1: I believed in the principle of the gathering and felt it my duty to go although it was a
severe trial to me, in my feelings to leave my native land . . . but my heart was fixed. I
knew in whom I had trusted and with the fire of Israel's God burning in my bosom, I
forsook my home.
Jane Carter

Female Narrator #2: We were a sorry company that traveled . . . that morning. Myself and others wept all the
way. . . . Now I had left all and was traveling alone to a land unknown to me, but I had
cast my lot with the people of God and in him I put my trust.
Mary Ann Weston Maughan

Main Narrator: Footsteps, tears, and mighty courage mark the path on which they came. They were
attacked by mobs, and they were forced from their homes in the middle of winter, but
they went on in the name of Jesus Christ and established the foundation upon which we
now stand. Women of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are heirs to a
powerful legacya legacy of deep commitment and faith.

ii
Song: Live in the Light
(Three female soloists & choir)
Main Narrator: In the Old Testament, we find the story of Queen Esther, whose strength and courage
saved the lives of her people. While discussing Esthers opportunity to exert her righteous
influence, Mordecai asked her, Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for
such a time as this? (Esther 4:14). As women of the latter days, we have come into the
kingdom of God during the dispensation of the fulness of times. President Wilford
Woodruff remarked, [T]here certainly never has been a generation of people on the earth
that has had a greater work to perform than the inhabitants of the earth in the latter days
(Journal of Discourses 15:8, April 6, 1872, PD).
The adversary understands the impact and influence that a righteous woman wields in
todays world. Sheri Dew said: Satan of course knows how spiritually potent the
knowledge of our divine identity is. He hates women of the noble birthright. . . . He hates
us because of the influence we have on husbands and children, family and friends, the
Church and even the world. It is no secret to him that we are the Lord's secret weapon.
Thus it should not surprise us that the master of deceit is going all out to keep us from
comprehending the majesty of who we are (No Doubt About It [Salt Lake City: Deseret
Book, 2001], 45).
As it states in the well-known proverb, Where there is no vision, the people perish
(Proverbs 29:18). Every woman who seeks God, no matter her circumstances in life, can
receive the quiet and confirming knowledge of her divine worth and gain an
understanding of the mighty vision the Lord holds for her life. The Lord can help us look
beyond the magazines, the ads, and the images the world tells us we need to be, so that
we can remember the true purposes for which we came to earth.
Song: Your Song
(Female Soloist)
Main Narrator: Elder Joe J. Christensen poses ten questions we should ask ourselves pertaining to our
personal spirituality. The first question he would have us ask is: Do I read scriptures
daily? (Barbara K. Christensen, Joe J. Christensen , Making Your Home a Missionary
Training Center [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1985], 54).
In the end, it will not matter what we have put before scripture study if we have not
followed the commandment to feast upon the words of God. In our rushing to and fro to
accomplish so much in our lives, we often keep a serious study of the scriptures at the
bottom of a very long list of to dos.
President Brigham Young instructed the Saints to say to the fields, flocks, herds,
gold, silver, goods, possessions, and to all the world, stand aside; get away
from my thoughts, for I am going up to worship the Lord (Deseret News, 5 Jan. 1854,
2). He also gave this wise counsel: Do those things that are necessary to be done and let
those alone that are not necessary, and we shall accomplish more than we do now
(Discourses of Brigham Young, 3:160).
Ultimately, we will spend our time on the things we value most. In the Sermon on the
Mount, Jesus taught, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Matthew
6:21).
Song: Burn in Me
(Female Soloist)
iii
Main Narrator: Over 160 years ago, when the Relief Society was established, it chose as its motto: Charity
never faileth. The prophet Mormon taught that without charity, we are nothing. For all
things must fail . . . But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso
is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him (Moroni 7:46-47).
Narrator #2: One Relief Society woman tells this story: I had been feeling down on myselfespecially
about my looks. Every time I saw a beautiful and thin woman, I would compare myself to her,
and I always came up short. I spent hours thinking about how I could do my makeup better,
about needing to buy new clothes, about a new diet plan I could start. I found myself getting
depressed, easily irritated, and disappointed. Then one day, I met a new sister in my
neighborhood. This woman was short and slightly overweight. She had rather coarse red hair
and a freckled face. She was dressed nicely, but there were no extraordinary physical features
about her. However, there was something that absolutely drew me into hera cheer and a
spirit that radiated all about her. I watched as she interacted with her three children, and I
could see how much of her life she had devoted to them. She seemed to have developed such
strong qualities of charity in her life: patience, kindness, and unselfishness. A constant smile
and happiness marked her face, and somehow she seemed to fill the room with joy. There was
a confidence inside her that I knew came from being close to the Spirit. I suddenly realized
that this was the kind of person I wanted to strive to be. I didnt need to worry so much about
the way I looked or how I compared to other women in the world. The traits I found in this
woman were far more important than being physically beautiful. That woman may never be
considered beautiful in the eyes of the world, but I have no doubt that she will have an effect
on every person she comes in contact with in her life. In her, I saw true beauty.

Narrator #3: Another Relief Society sister wrote, In sacrament meeting several weeks ago, I noticed a
single woman in my ward, Sister Riggs, sitting by the wife of one of the counselors in the
bishopric. The counselors wife had a baby and four other young children to handle while her
husband was on the stand. I watched throughout the meeting as Sister Riggs helped this lady
and her children. Every Sunday, Sister Riggs came and sat by that mother and helped with her
children. And then I began to notice that Sister Riggs was always looking for those who were
seated alone in Relief Society, or who were new in the ward. She was always welcoming
everyone, offering deep insights to questions in class, and was the first to volunteer when help
was needed in the ward. One Sunday in Relief Society, the instructor asked that each of us
stand up and introduce ourselves and tell our husbands names, as well. Sister Riggs, having
never received the opportunity of marriage, couldve easily been offended and sad, but when
it was her turn she stood up and said with a smile, My husband mustve been killed in the war
in heaven. There was a beautiful optimism that surround her. I constantly find myself
wanting to be a better person because of her example.

Narrator #4: A 30-year-old Relief Society woman wrote, Today I came across this quote by David O.
McKay: She who can paint a masterpiece or write a book that will influence millions
deserves the admiration and the plaudits of mankind; but she who rears successfully a family .
. . whose influence will be felt through generations to come . . . long after paintings shall have
faded, and books and statues shall have decayed or shall have been destroyed, deserves the
highest honor that man can give, and the choicest blessings of God(Improvement Era,
39:269). This quote makes me think about the devoted and faithful mothers who may never be
known or viewed by the world as anything great. Women who give so many years of their
lives and forgo worldly opportunities to influence and mold the spirits of men. And I know
that these women will find greater joy and beauty in their lives than they could in any worldly
vocation.
Main Narrator: When Joseph smith gave instructions to the first group of members of the Relief Society, he
said [L]et kindness, charity, and love crown your works henceforward. These qualities are
infinitely more powerful and admirable than outward beauty. The scriptures remind us that the
Lord "seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord
looketh on the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7).

Song: Beautiful Heart
(Male Soloist or Female Soloist)
iv
Main Narrator: On our journey to become women of God, we will inevitably face times of sorrow and
hardship in our lives. Elder Neal A. Maxwell said, [Y]ou and I cannot really expect to
glide through life, coolly air-conditioned . . . In furthering His plan for us, God seeks to
tutor and to stretch us in order to refine us so that He can bring us home . . . It is a process
in which God has declared of His sobering but enhancing purposes for His children, We
will prove them herewith to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God
shall command them (Abraham 3:25). (If Thou Endure It Well [Salt Lake City:
Bookcraft, 1996], 45).
It seems that the most faithful women and men in our gospel history have faced
incredible adversity in their lives. Joseph Smith was imprisoned forty-seven times. He
was beaten, ridiculed, and tarred and feathered. Just as the Apostle Paul, Abinadi the
prophet, and even our Savior Jesus Christ, Joseph Smith died a martyr to the truth.
President Wilford Woodruff said of the Prophet Joseph, [The Lord] did prove him; and,
although he had the whole world to contend against, and the treachery of false friends to
withstand, although his whole life was a scene of trouble and anxiety and care, yet, in all
his afflictions . . . he was ever true to his God (Journal of Discourses: 22:233).
There is no doubt that every one of us we will be tested and tried to our very core, as
have all the faithful men and women who have gone before us. But as the Lord said to
Joseph Smith, [H]old on thy way . . . Thy days are known . . . , therefore, fear not what
man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever (D&C 122:9).
Song: Hold On
(Female Soloist and Optional Male Backup)

Main Narrator: The influence of the women of the Relief Society on our world today is immeasurable.
President Joseph F. Smith made this declaration: "It is not for you to be led by the women
of the world; it is for you to lead the world and to lead especially the women of the world,
in everything that is praise-worthy, everything that is God-like, everything that is
uplifting and that is purifying to the children of men" (minutes of the General Board of
the Relief Society, 17 March 1914, 54).

Sister Eliza R. Snow, the second general president of the Relief Society, said, Let us be
more energetic to . . . develop that strength of moral character which cannot be surpassed
on the face of the earth. . . . The circumstances in which we are placed and our positions
in life demand this of us, because we have greater and higher privileges than any other
females upon the face of the earth (Evening News, 14 January 1870).

Women of these latter days have great reason to rise up and to rejoice. Joseph Smith
prophesied that we would indeed rejoice as sisters, united in the powerful organization of
the Relief Society. At its very organization he said, I now turn the key to you in the
name of God and this Society shall rejoice.
