T
hunderbird Ranch is
on its way.
Te business --
which was purchased by
Open Door Center in Feb-
ruary of 2012 -- was already
established in the state.
Te business was owned
by two women in Ray,
North Dakota, said Ranch
manager Kay Metcalf.
When Open Door Center
asked to purchase it, one of
the principal owners was a
special education teacher
and she thought it would be
a good ft.
It has been since we got
it.
Te company produces
mixes -- some gluten free
-- for soups, dips, and other
products.
I do all the mixing,
Metcalf said. Tree of the
Open Door participants
weigh everything out for
future deliveries.
We have other Open
Door folks who put on
stickers, place in bags and
create packages for whole-
sale and for Dakota Pride
shows.
Metcalf said when Tun-
derbird Ranch goes to big
Dakota Pride shows, the
welcome is always big.
People say Tunderbird
Ranch is here! said Met-
calf. Its always a big event.
Tunderbird Ranch also
makes baskets for special
occasions.
We do them for parties,
birthdays, Christmas, the
man-
ager
said.
Its a
big part of what we do.
Te company has already
outgrown its current loca-
tion.
We are going to re-
model, Metcalf said. Were
going to knock a wall down
into the garage area and put
in another kitchen.
Eventually, well have
one kitchen for normal
mixes and one for our
gluten-free mixes.
According to Metcalf,
there is a fve-year plan for
the business.

tive director of Open Door,

Tose traveling on our area highways
have no doubt seen the road construction
on interstate 94.
Comine those road construction areas
with farmers on our two-lane highways
and drivers need to take care.
Harvest is just beginning, which means
more tractors, har-
vest trucks and oth-
er farm implements
being moved from
feld to feld.
Ofen farmers
will use the paved
highways if thats
the easiest route to
take.
Drivers need to
be aware and drive
careful.
People tend to be
in a hurry and ofen arent pleased with be-
ing held up for any reason.
Yet, we all need to take a deep breath and
realize that the small amount of time we
need to go through construction or be be-
hind a tractor isnt the end of the world.
Tat might happen if we dont take a mo-
ment to realize the dangers of not paying
attention, or not being patient.
I for one may not like dealing with farm-
ing equipment, but I realize that agricul-
ture is the backbone of our areas economic
success.
Despite the Bakken oil felds, North Da-
kota, especially eastern North Dakota, is
still a farm state and we should be able to
give our farmes the
courtesy of being
patient when they
are on our roads.
As for construc-
tion delays, well,
now is the time of
year this work has
to be done.
From May to
September, road
work has to be done
in this state as win-
ter hits hard and
sometimes can arrive in October.
I know for a fact Ive seen snow and cold
temperatures hit before Halloween.
So join me in taking a deep breath, exer-
cising some patience and not getting upset
over highway or road delays.
In the long run, it all benefts all of us.
Might as well understand.

ART IS NOT WHAT YOU SEE, BUT WHAT YOU MAKE OTHERS SEE. EDGAR DEGAS
www.indy-bc.com
I
n the area that we live in it is im-
portant for the availability of prop-
er veterinary care.
We are rural enough here where
cattle and horses are fairly abundant,
sad Tom Arnold, a veterinary doctor
at the Valley City Veterinary Hospital
here in Valley City. To be part of the
community, and part of a community
that services the area, not only Valley
City but multiple towns, you need to
be able to help people with their pets
and their livestock that are their liveli-
hood.
A little bit of everything is what we
do.
A little bit of everything is what they
do, and what is needed in this area.
Not only do people have companions,
but people also have larger animals
that need caring for. Te Valley City
Veterinary Hospital will make house
calls -- no matter the time of day -- in
an emergency for an animal that can-
not be transported.
Probably every day one of us is go-
ing out to a farm. Tat is horses and
cows usually, said Laura Axvig. Axvig
is also a veterinary doctor at the V.C
Vet.
Being in a farming community it is
important for animal health. One of
the main reasons for that is because a
lot of the time we are eating what our
neighbors raise and butcher.
It is really impractical for people to
take their animals somewhere else liv-
ing in a rural area. If we werent here it
would add a half hour to Jamestown or
Casselton, said Axvig. We probably
go as far as 45 minutes to an hour.
Tat is kind of our furthest away
regular clients. I have gone as far as
south of Jamestown.
It kind of depends more season-
ally based on whether you are going to
get called and what you will get called
for, Arnold said. Spring season, calv-
ing season, you are more likely to get
called out to assist a cow which can
be any time. Now everything is pretty
much done calving for the most part;
the emergencies now tend to be small
animal, there are a few large animal
but that is mostly seasonal. We have
someone on call all day every day.
As the seasons change, so do the
needs of clients and their animals.
We are a majority of small animal

now. Our day shifs are usu-
ally a majority of small ani-
mal with a little large ani-
mal thrown in. A lot of that
is spades and neuters pretty
much every day of the week.
And your routine exams
and vaccinations, said Ax-
vig. We do anything from
basic exams and operations
to emergency afer hours
surgeries.
Tey may be part of a
small town area, but they
do not limit the potential
clients that could need their
help.
Small animals, dogs and
cats are the majority, but
we do see other things that
walk in the door. We dont
really specialize in them,
but we will take a peek at
them. Cattle and horses are
kind of our bigger large ani-
mal and then the other kind
are pigs, sheep, and goats.
Stuf we dont see on a regu-
lar basis but we would still
help, explained Arnold.
Always there, always will-
ing to help, Valley City Vet-
erinary Hospital is around
to help any animal in need.
We are open fve days a
week eight to fve and Satur-
days we are open, Sundays
we are closed, but if it is an
emergency we will come in,
said Arnold.

FAITHFULLY
T
he Gospel
of Mat-
thew re-
cords Jesus
Sermon on the
Mount. It begins
in chapter fve
and stretches into
chapter seven. In
chapter 7:12-14,
we have these words, So what-
ever you wish that others would
do to you, do also to them, for
this is the Law and the Prophets.
Enter by the narrow gate. For the
gate is wide and the way is easy
that leads to destruction, and
those who enter by it are many.
For the gate is narrow and the
way is hard that leads to life, and
those who fnd it are few.
Te verses above are likely fa-
miliar to most. Te beginning
is what we ofen call the Golden
Rule, So whatever you wish that

FAITHFULLY: From 8
others would do to you, do also to them. Jesus says that
this can be taken as a short summary of what the Law and
the Prophets spoke of. In this sense, we can see how the law
is written on all human hearts. For a quick survey of reli-
gions throughout history will show that most have a state-
ment that presents the same idea as what Jesus says in the
Golden Rule. But here again we would like to be clear that
the Law of God, is good when it is applied and used in the
correct way. Te law in the end is meant to show us our sin
and our need for a Savior.
We all like to be treated well. We would all like others to
serve us and love us. We all would like people to put the
best construction on what we say and do. However, in this
world we see that the Golden Rule is broken over and over
again. Our friends and neighbors break it and so do we.
Just the other day one of my sons kicked his brother. When
asked about this he said he did it because he was kicked
frst. We like to live by this law of retribution rather than
the Golden Rule.
Tis is why when explaining the narrow and the wide
gates Jesus makes clear that the gate to destruction is wide.
It is the way that is seen as easy and it is many that enter
that way to destruction. Tis is the path that doesnt need
to be found but is the way we simply follow by nature. Te
narrow gate is diferent from the wide gate. Te narrow way
is hard. It reminds me that the life of the Christian is not
promised to be easy. Te narrow way is marked by sufer-
ing and trials for the Christian.
With the Golden Rule on our minds and our many fail-
ings in that area, we are reminded that none of us should
be allowed on the path to life. But Jesus has come to open
the way of salvation. He is according to Hebrews 12:2, the
founder and perfecter of our faith. Te word founder
means, one who goes frst on the path. Jesus has gone be-
fore us and completely fulflled the law, even the Golden
Rule. He has done this for you and by His death and resur-
rection has opened the way to eternal life. In fact, Jesus is
the way, and the truth and the life (John 14:6).

LEE
Lee is a friendly guy who was
found in a dumpster on a cold
winter day. Lee is a quiet soul at
a year and a half, but is always
purring and looking for someone
to play with. Hes an amazing
snuggler and would love a forever
home where there is another cat
to play with. Super friendly.

any gal who will pay attention to
him.

GEORGIA
If youre looking for the life of the
party, 4-year-old Georgia is your gal!
She loves people. Shes staying with
a dog and rabbit, and doesnt bother
either. Found abandoned in a house,
she over groomed herself, so her
belly is bald. But, that doesnt stop
her from hamming it up, and into
