SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH 3

REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG
PASTORS CORNER

Dear Parishioners,

While I am on vacation, I offer for your consideration a Reflection from the Rev. William C. Graham of The
Collegeville Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research, Scholar in Residence 2013-2014, Collegeville, Minnesota.
Msgr. Richard
You have, of course, heard the one
about the three men stranded on a
desert island: there they are, bereft,
tattered and hungry, when a bottle
washes up on the shore. They uncork
the bottle, and a genie appears and
offers three wishes. The first wishes to
be taken to Parisa snap of the
genies fingers and the man is standing
in front of the Eiffel Tower. The
second man wishes that he were in
Hollywooda snap of the genies
fingers and the man is at the corner of
Hollywood and Vine. The third man,
now alone on the island, looks around
and says, I wish my friends were
back.

Too bad that those three had not read
the passage where the Lord appears to
Solomon in a dream. Ask something
of me and I will give it to you, God
declares. And Solomon answered,
Give your servantan understanding
heart Pleased at such a request,
God gave Solomon a heart filled with
more wisdom and understanding than
anyone else in history.

We too must ask that the Lords
compassion would come to us so that
we may live with the law as our delight.
There is the key to our life in God:
seeking to have the compassionate
heart of Jesus. Paul calls us, as Jesus
first calls us, to be conformed to the
image of Christ. In this call, we find
our true spirituality, the very heart of
our faith: the process of being
conformed to the image of Christ for
the sake of others.

Saint Athanasius wrote that Jesus was
made man so that we might be made
God. We pray for that transformation
at the preparation of the gifts: [M]ay
we come to share in the divinity of
Christ who humbled himself to share
in our humanity.

When we recognize that this is the kind
of transformation for which we pray,
then we become that wise one who
sells all to buy the field where the
treasure is buried.

But remember that if the kingdom of
heaven is like a net thrown into the sea,
then the Church too must be like that
net. I once threw a line into the sea
while aboard a deep-sea fishing boat. I
caught something and struggled for the
longest time while imagining my pride
when a huge marlin would be pulled
from the sea. Instead, my reward was a
well-worn tire.

The Churchs net yields more than
castaway tires. We who come up out of
the baptismal waters are an assorted lot
of sinners, saints, and folk in-between.
Some do not vote the way I would
wish they might. Some resist my effort
to convert them to my own approach
to life. And yet we pray that through
the powerful working of Gods grace,
the mysteries we celebrate may sanctify
our way of life.
Seeking a compassionate heart

Mission Appeal Next Weekend, August 2 and 3

Our guest speaker at all the Masses next weekend will be Dr. Geetha Yeruva,
Co-founder/President of the Foundation for Children in Need (FCN). The FCN
is a Catholic lay organization based in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Dr. Yeruva will
share about the FCN mission work in the interior villages in the Southern part of
India where FCN sponsors 2000 children and 15 elderly. The FCN has been
responsible for building several schools, boarding homes, a community health
center and a home for the elderly. They provide free medical check-ups and
medicine to thousands of needy people. We welcome Dr. Geetha Yeruva and
encourage you to support the FCN mission work generously.

This Weeks Featured Saint
St. Ignatius of Loyola
The founder of
the Jesuits was
on his way to
military fame
and fortune
when a cannon
ball shattered his
leg. During his
recovery,
Ignatius read about the life of Christ
and lives of the saints. His conscience
was deeply touched, and a long, painful
turning to Christ began. Having seen
the Mother of God in a vision, he made
a pilgrimage to her shrine and remained
for almost a yearsometimes with the
Dominicans, sometimes in a paupers
hospice, often in a cave in the hills
praying. After a period of great peace
of mind, he went through a harrowing
trial of scruples. At length, his peace of
mind returned.
It was during this year of conversion
that Ignatius began to write down
material that later became his greatest
work, the Spiritual Exercises.
In 1534, at the age of 43, he and six
others vowed to live in poverty and
chastity and to go to the Holy Land. If
this became impossible, they vowed to
offer themselves to the apostolic
service of the pope. The latter became
the only choice. Four years later
Ignatius made the association
permanent; the Society of Jesus was
approved by Paul III.
Ignatius was a true mystic and centered
his spiritual life on the foundations of
Christianitythe Trinity, Christ, the
Eucharist. His spirituality is expressed
in the Jesuit motto, ad majorem Dei
gloriamfor the greater glory of God.
All activity was to be guided by a true
love of the Church and unconditional
obedience to the Holy Father, for which
reason all professed Jesuits take a fourth
vow to go wherever the pope should
send them for the salvation of souls.

Did You Know?
Seminary formation involves
much more than academic
study. Prior to ordination, a candidate
for priesthood goes through a lengthy
evaluation period, including an
internship during which he lives in a
rectory and works with priests, staff
and parishioners. During this time, the
candidate is judged as to his suitability
to be a priest. No one is ordained
unless the Staff at St. Johns Seminary,
including the lay faculty and formation
advisers, concludes that the candidate
has attained an emotional,
psychological and sexual maturity
appropriate for his age and for the
celibate life of a priest. For more

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJULY 27, 2014 6

Creating a Vision for a Timeless Parish
in the New Millennium

Last month, we reported on the findings of the Shea
Survey regarding the perceptions of parishioners and
school families with respect to the role Saint Rita
School should play in the priorities of Phase II of
the Capital Campaign. Overwhelming support for
the School as a Parish ministry characterized the
feedback. Equally impressive was the widespread
sense that the School needed to be a top priority for
capital improvement as soon as the repairs and
improvements scheduled for the Church are
completed.

Not surprisingly, a healthy division of opinion was
expressed regarding the question of improving the
existing facility vs. constructing a brand new
building. With estimated amounts very close for
either renovating or replacing the school buildings,
the survey reflected a slight preference for trying to
renovate. 56% of those completing the survey
favored renovating the building and 44% preferred
constructing a new building.

Watch your mailbox for a special mailing from the
Campaign, including a gift from Father Richard. If
for some reason you dont receive our special packet,
please contact the Parish Office and well be happy
to provide one for you.
