Walmart chooses AkzoNobel as its paint
supplier in the U.S.
AkzoNobel has been selected by
Walmart to be the primary paint sup-
plier for the retailers U.S. stores. The
company will develop and manufac-
ture a portfolio of interior and exteri-
or paints for more than 3,500
Walmart stores nationwide. This
agreement builds on the existing rela-
tionship with Walmart, the worlds
largest retailer, for paints in Puerto
Rico and Canada, and with Liquid
Nails adhesives in the U.S.
This is an excellent opportunity for
us to work with Walmart and offer their
customers an exciting new in-store pro-
gram, said Tex Gunning, the AkzoNobel
board member responsible for decora-
tive paints. This is a landmark deal
which will significantly boost our mar-
ket share in the U.S. and contribute to
further enhancing the value of our
Glidden brand there.
Walmart will begin the transition
to AkzoNobel early next year.
AkzoNobel Decorative Paints in the
Americas (Canada, US and Latin
America) currently employs around
7,200 people and generates revenue
of close to 1.5 billion. It operates
eight paint manufacturing and dis-
tribution sites in the U.S. and a glob-
al research and development center
in Strongsville. The portfolio consists
of architectural coatings and wood
care products, as well as adhesives
and caulks.
HYDRITE BEGINS MANUFACTURING
EPOXY RESINS AT WISCONSIN PLANT
Hydrite Advanced Resins, LLC,
(HAR), a new company formed from
the combined resources of Hydrite
Chemical Co. and the technologies of
Polymers 2000 LTD, has begun epoxy
resin production at its new facility in
Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. In March,
HAR commissioned a major expan-
sion at Hydrite Chemical Co.s facility
near Madison, Wisconsin, including
twin 12,500 gallon reactors custom
designed for the manufacture of
epichlorohydrin derivatives including
specialty liquid epoxy resins. The
HAR equipment is housed in a new
custom designed process building
adjacent to Hydrite Chemicals
Organic Processing site. Hydrite
Chemical serves as the toll (contract)
manufacturer for HAR in providing
all manufacturing and support servic-
es in the production of HARs epoxy
resins and other epichlorohydrin
derivatives. The sites existing exten-
sive organic synthesis and distillation
equipment complements the epoxy
plant with capabilities of downstream
processing and advancement of epoxy
resins as well as purification by frac-
tional distillation and/or thin film
evaporation. The expansion includes
bulk storage of epichlorohydrin as
well as solid and liquid co-reactants.
HARs initial offering includes resor-
cinol diglycidyl ether (RDGE) and a
series of mono and multifunctional
glycidyl ethers commonly used as
reactive diluents in epoxy formula-
tions. The design includes the capa-
bility of vacuum distillation of
epichlorohydrin and processing sol-
vents, including azeotropic separa-
tion. Multiple support vessels provide
the ability to achieve very low levels
of hydrolyzable chloride (HCC) and
residual epichlorohydrin. CW

Fresh Paint
International Paint Protective
Coatings, an AkzoNobel business and
leading global supplier of high-per-
formance protective coatings and fire
protection products, has joined forces
with AkzoNobels Decorative Paints
Canada group, to consolidate sales and
distribution operations under a store-
within-a-warehouse concept in Dorval,
Quebec. The 25,000 square-foot Dorval
facility was occupied by International
Paint exclusively, operating as a distri-
bution service center for the companys
protective coatings and marine prod-
ucts. Although the distribution centers
lease agreement wasnt due to expire
until early 2010, it was clear to Richard
Champagne, manager of Protective
Coatings Eastern Canada, that the
facilitys space requirement was actual-
ly larger than what they needed.
During the second half of 2009, con-
struction began on the Dorval facility
to transform what was strictly office
and warehouse space, into a layout
featuring a traditional paint store,
complete with walk-in showroom and
an array of architectural paints, color
displays and related products. In addi-
tion to the International Paint name,
the stores signage will now feature its
new go-forward name, Betonel-Dulux.
Dulux and Devoe High Performance
Coatings brands are prominently dis-
played in the store showroom, in order
to reinforce the brands important her-
itage to professional painters and
maintenance users.
The new retail store-within-a-ware-
house opened for business in April
2010, occupying approximately 5,000
square-feet of the 25,000 square-foot
location. The location houses tinting
facilities for three distinct tinting sys-
tems that support the architectural
paint brands, and two separate indus-
trial paint tinting systems that support
both the International Paint and Devoe
High Performance Coatings brands.
These systems provide the custom color
and color matching support critical to
both architectural and industrial main-
tenance markets and customers. The
sales and distribution center also hous-
es a suite of more than a dozen offices,
currently occupied by International
Paint and Decorative Paints Canada
managers, sales and administrative
support personnel.
The benefit of consolidating the
businesses has become immediately
apparent, according to the firm.
International Paints relationship with
large specification-driven customers
was very different from the decorative
groups focus on commercial painting
contractors that require limited quan-
tities of protective coatings. By decora-
tive representatives working under
the mentorship of International Paint
counterparts, some of the more
respected Devoe High Performance
Coatings products such as Cathacoat
302 and Bar Rust 235 have been lever-
aged into larger Quebec industrial
facilities and projects.
As an example, one of International
Paints largest industrial customers

NEVERFADE EXTERIOR PAINT
RECEIVES MVP AWARD
NeverFade paint, warranted to last 15
years against fading, has been named a
winner of the 2010 Most Valuable
Product (MVP) Awards presented by
Building Products magazine. Man -
ufactured by APV Engineered Coatings,
NeverFade professional exterior paint
is formulated with Kynar Aquatec
polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to make
it resistant to fading, algae, fungus,
stains and abrasions.
While the residential construction
industry sees hundreds of new products
introductions each year, the MVP win-
ners stand apart for their thoughtful
design, smart technologies or even pure
wow factor, said Jean Dimeo, editorial
director for Building Products and
ebuild.com. In a struggling economy, its
innovations like these that can help con-
tractors woo customers, save time and
money, and surpass the competition.
APV Engineered Coatings worked
with Arkema, Inc. to create NeverFade
paint. Kynar Aquatec is dispersed into
the water-based formula for NeverFade
paint, so VOCs are drastically reduced,
making NeverFade. The homopolymer
in Kynar Aquatec is a tough, engineered
thermoplastic that offers a balance of
properties. As a result, NeverFade paint
withstands harsh thermal, chemical
and ultraviolet environmental condi-
tions. In essence, it resists abrasions,
restricts the growth of mold and
mildew, and will not pick up dirt.
We created this top-of-the-line
exterior paint with ultraviolet block-
ers and high quality pigments mixed
with fluoropolymer resin to prevent
against fading and chalking, said
David Venarge, chairman of APV
Engineered Coatings. To show our
confidence in this product, we pro-
vide an unprecedented 15-year war-
ranty against fading. In the unlikely
event that someone is obliged to
apply the warranty, we will provide
the replacement of the product and
payment for job-related labor costs.
Available nationwide for use on
both residential and commercial
projects, NeverFade may be applied
to vinyl siding, PVC, wood, aluminum
siding, stucco, masonry and fiber
cement surfaces. Since each paint
order is custom made, NeverFade is
available in an unlimited number of
colors.

lic coverings for walls, ceilings and
other interior surfaces and acces-
sories. The new line of Dazzle cover-
ings features Truform tinted clear
coatings by PPG applied to galva-
nized TruZinc panels by Steelscape.
The products are available in 16 dis-
tinct color options encompassing
eight tinted clearcoats and two gloss
levels. Because of their clearcoat
appearance, Truform tinted coatings
enable Dazzle coverings to join the
natural spangle of TruZinc products
with a vivid color palette. Suggested
applications for Dazzle coverings
include column covers, wall panels,
decorative ceilings, heating and cool-
ing equipment and walk-in coolers.
The product also provides a colorful
alternative to white boards because
it resists dry-erase and permanent

ant to fingerprints, stains, graffiti,
scratches and marring. For building
owners, this durability means less
maintenance along with the ability
to add color without the disruption of
painting. It also is lighter and less

MESOCOAT LICENSES SURFACE
ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
MesoCoat has acquired exclusive
commercial rights to the high density
infrared surface modification technol-
ogy IP Portfolio from UT-Battelle,
LLC. This surface engineering tech-
nology was developed over the last
decade at the infrared processing cen-
ter, part of the industrial materials
division of Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL). Through technol-
ogy transfer collaboration efforts and
licensing of multiple patents, Meso -
Coat is commercializing this technolo-
gy which enables the application of
coatings and cladding materials at
rates 1-2 orders of magnitude faster,
and with better quality than alternate
processes such as laser or weld
cladding or furnace processing,
according to the company. This High
Density Infrared technology enables
large areas to be rapidly clad with
wear or corrosion resistant metal or
cermet coatings. This technology has
the potential to revolutionize the coat-
ing and cladding industry because it
enables metallurgical bonding of
metal and ceramic coatings to be
applied very rapidly and at low cost to
large, previously unreachable areas
due to the dimensional limitation of
currently available equipments.
These areas include ship decks, build-
ing supports, reactor vessels and
equipments, bridges and pipes.
Additional benefits include the
reduced use of natural resources and
potential energy conservation, and
the elimination of reliance on environ-
mentally damaging substances such
as chromate primers to protect large
structures. CW

Slow growth to recovery
International Coatings Scene
18 SEPTEMBER 2010 WWW.COATINGS WORLD.COM
T
he European coatings market is show-
ing clear signs of a recovery from the
recession, according to the financial
results of the regions coatings companies for
the first half of 2010.
Nonetheless there are considerable doubts
in the sector about whether the momentum
behind the recovery will last, particularly
since the extent of the revival in demand is
by no means uniform across Europe.
There is only a slow recovery in the mar-
ket while the outlook is still rather uncer-
tain, said Erkki Jaervinen, president and
chief executive of Tikkurila, the Finnish-
based coatings producer.
The most buoyant market has been Germany
where the countrys GDP grew by 2.2 percent in
the three months to June, the fastest quarterly
growth in 20 years. This has been mainly
because the lower euro, particularly against the
US dollar, has boosted its exports.
The association of the German paint and
printing inks industry (VdL) had forecast in
May that output of the countrys coatings
companies would rise by 1.4 percent this year
while turnover would go up by 3.6 percent.
Because of the growth in the German econo-
my weve now revised those figures to a 2.7 per-
cent rise in outputslightly higher than the offi-
cial forecast of a 2.5 percent increase in GDP
and to a 5.1 percent rise in turnover, said
Michael Bross, VdLs head of public relations.
However even German coatings companies
are worried about the possibility of a slow-
down in exports because of a dip in the glob-
al economy and the threat of more financial
turmoil among the southern member states
of the European Union after a debt crisis in
Greece earlier this year.
In many parts of Europe coatings sales took
off in the first quarter of this year and contin-
ued to surge ahead for much of the second quar-
ter. But by the middle of the year there were
indications that demand was flattening out.
There was a lot of restocking which acceler-
ated after a pick-up in demand stretching back
to the middle of last year, said David Thomas,
chemicals analyst at Oxford Economics, Oxford,
England, which estimated that the Western
European paints sector expanded by 10 percent
in the first quarter compared with the same
period in 2009.
Now the rise in sales has begun to wane in
the wake of European governments ending
their economic stimulus programs introduced
after the financial crisis of 2008 to soften the
impact of the recession. Furthermore in an
effort to reduce their debts, they have also
begun to make sharp expenditure cuts across
large parts of the public sector.
Cars sales, for example, have begun to weak-
en because governments have withdrawn finan-
cial incentives for drivers to trade in old cars for
new ones, said Thomas.
In Sweden a project giving tax benefits to
people renovating their homes has bolstered
demand for decorative coatings and other
materials in the country.
The Swedish scheme has been a huge suc-
cess and is one of the reasons why we are
expecting an eight percent growth in revenue
this year, said Soeren Olesen, managing
director of Fluegger, a Danish-based producer
and retailer of decorative paints, which is
active in the Swedish market. In Denmark,
which doesnt have such a scheme decorative
paint sales have been growing around one to
two percent against three to five percent in
Sweden. Around 20 percent of professional
painters in the Danish capital Copenhagen
are out of work.
In Russia rising consumer confidence in the
first half of the yearbefore the country was hit
by drought as well as forest and peat fires which
enveloped Moscow in smoghelped stimulate

more on home improvements.
Demand for decorative paints rose
by seven percent by volume in the first
half of the year after a big drop in 2009,
said Jaervinen of Tikkurila for which
Russia is a large market. Furthermore
Russian consumers have been moving
from cheaper to premium paints which
has helped to increase our sales.
AkzoNobel, the European market
leader in decorative paints, reported
that besides strong demand in Turkey
and Russia and moderate growth in
the UK, its other decorative markets in
the region were stable to declining.
The UK housing markets started to
falter in the second quarter after an 8.9
percent rise in house prices in the first
quarter. In Spain house prices fell by 4.7
percent in the first quarter amidst a
slump in demand for paints and other
building products.
Sales of OEM auto paints soared
earlier in the year as output of pas-
senger cars went up by 34 percent in
the first three months compared with
a year ago. But production was still 13
percent lower than in the first quarter
of 2008, according to figures from
European Automobile Manufacturers
Association (ACEA).
BASF Coatingsmost of whole sales
are in the OEM sectorrecorded a 23
percent rise in sales in the first half of
the years, which was also underpinned
by a good order volume in the auto
refinish segment.
However European demand for cars
has begun to decrease again with a 7.4
percent drop in sales in April and a 9.3
percent fall in new registrations in May
as government support schemes were
discontinued.
In addition to a big surge in demand
for OEM paints prompted mainly by
higher car exports, the German coat-
ings sector has also benefited from the
increase in exports from electrical
equipment and machinery.
These three marketsOEM, electri-
cal and machineryhave been the main
drivers behind increasing coatings sales,
said Bross. After machinery output in
Germany declined by around 40 percent
last year it has increased sharply.
AkzoNobel reported strong demand
for powder coatings, especially in
Eastern Europe, and also a quick
rebound in the Turkish market for wood
finishes and coatings. In specialty plas-
tics coatings there were increased sales
in Europe in contrast to declining vol-
ume and revenue sales in Asia.
While enjoying rises in sales, most
coatings companies in Europe have
been complaining about increasing raw
material costs. VdL said that raw mate-
rial prices went up by an average 10
percent in the first four months of the
year with the costs of some additives
jumping by as much as 25 percent.
Raw material producers have been
closing capacity and reducing their
stocks, said Olesen. As soon as demand
picked up there were shortages.
Even if the sales of European coat-
ings companies continue to improve
for the rest of the year they face the
prospect of narrower margins because
of bigger raw material bills. CW

kzoNobel Brasil is expected to earn
$1 billion on a double-digit sales
increase this year as the result of
strong sales in architectural, automotive,
industrial and maritime paint and coat-
ings. Plans are to plow the income into
capacity expansion and marketing, compa-
ny officials said. Brazilian sales are esti-
mated to represent about five percent of
AkzoNobel global sales.
The company hopes to increase its production
capacity by one-third, including new investment
in technology, according to Fernando Macedo,
AkzoNobel's director of maritime paints and
coatings in Brazil. While no specific segment
destination was cited, the company is reported
to be planning to invest $56 million this year,
evenly split between new capacity and market-
ing. AkzoNobel spent about $100 million in
Brazil over a three-year period ending in 2008.
One key destination of the new investment
is expected to be in architectural capacity,
especially to support the Coral premium
brand paint. Premium paint sales represent
30 percent of all architectural paint sales for
AkzoNobel, which has an estimated 25 per-
cent share of the premium paints market,
according to a report by Valor Economico. The
company hopes to increase its market share
by several points this year, in part by increas-
ing points of sales to 23,000 locations, up from
16,000 last year, another report indicated.
In 2008, AkzoNobel acquired the Coral brand
from ICI, adding to its portfolio of brands
including Dulux, Sikkens, Wanda, Ypiranga,
Interpon, International and Glidden.
Jaap Kuiper, president of Akzo Brasil, recent-
ly appeared on Brazilian television to launch
the company's Everything in Color for You
campaign for architectural paints. Lately, the
company has been donating its Corel brand
paint for sprucing up historic buildings and for
hillside slums in Brazil, called favelas.
The company is also localizing its campaign
with city-specific projects, like the Everything
in Color for Sao Paulo drive to help augment
paint use in the capital of Sao Paulo state.
AkzoNobel produces automobile, architec-
tural and industrial paints and coatings at its
Itupeva, Sao Paulo state facility. Maritime
paints are produced at Sao Goncalo, in Rio de
Janeiro state. New sub-lines of the Coral
architectural and Sparlack wood finishes
brands have recently been released, including
zero-VOC products. Among architectural color
launches this year, Cu Californiano, or
California Sky, is a major campaign.
AkzoNobel Brasil adheres to the Global
Reporting Initiative to report its corporate cit-
izenship and sustainability practices, which is
strongly followed in Brazil. The company
describes its waste, energy, community, air
quality, services and transportation practices
on a segment-specific level. Among goals of the
company are to increase zero- and low-VOC
products to a level of 30 percent of all sales by
2015, compared to 22 percent in 2009.
AkzoNobel also produces and/or sells paint
regionally in the Southern Cone of South
America in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and
Uruguay. CW

Benjamin Moore offers Eco Spec WB Silver
22 SEPTEMBER 2010 WWW.COATINGS WORLD.COM
Benjamin Moore has created Eco Spec
WB Silver, the first zero-VOC paint in
the U.S. formulated with elemental sil-
ver and other EPA-approved antimicro-
bial additives that inhibit bacterial
odors and mildew growth on the paint
surface. A premium commercial coat-
ing, Eco Spec WB Silver is the latest
addition to the companys Green
Promise portfolio of paint products for-
mulated with Benjamin Moores
Gennex waterborne colorant system.
The product remains zero-VOC even
after tinting and no matter the color.
Eco Spec WB Silvers mildew-resistant
quality helps to extend the useful life of
the coating. At the same time, it renders
a dried paint film that resists mold, fun-
gus and bacterial odors and is durable
even after repeated washings,
according to the company. And, like
the original Eco Spec WB formula-
tion, it is low-odor, zero-VOC yet
available in any color, and remains
VOC-free regardless the tint. An
ideal choice for projects applying for
LEED credits, Eco Spec WB Silver is
recommended for high-humidity
locations and high-traffic commercial
facilities such as hospitals, nursing
homes, schools, dorms, day care,
health and fitness centers, museums,
restaurants, hotels, re sorts, govern-
ment offices and military com-
pounds. Eco Spec WB Silver is avail-
able in three finishes: flat, eggshell
and semi-gloss. It is sold in single
and five-gallon containers.

COATING FROM SEICOAT
Nearly any type of surface can be
made graffiti-proof with the applica-
tion of GPA-300 Graffiti Proofer Non-
Stick coating from Seicoat Cor -
poration. Benefits include graffiti
removal without the use of any chem-
icals. According to the manufacturer,
and as proven by a third party test lab
via ASTM 6578 graffiti resistance test,
the Graffiti Proofer coating does not
allow anything to stick to it, including
paint, permanent marker, stickers and
adhesives. The anti-graffiti coating
incorporates a unique nanotechnologi-
cal constituent that both penetrates
the structure and builds a durable
non-stick and chemical resistant film.
Any graffiti residue can be wiped
away with a dry cloth or water flush-
ing without the use of any cleaning
chemicals. The Seicoat coating is
water-clear, permanent, UV stable,
and chemical and abrasion resistant.

Primer for use as a first coat in conjunction with the
application of NeverFade exterior paints. Both products
have low VOCs and are eco-friendly. The water-based
NeverFade Universal Primer adheres to a wide variety of
substrates, including wood, stucco, aluminum siding,
vinyl siding, masonry and cement panels. The white
primer can easily be applied to prepared surfaces with a
brush, roller or spray gun and requires just 24 hours of
drying time. NeverFade Universal Primer was created
for use as a first coat in conjunction with the application
of NeverFade with Kynar Aquatec Exterior Paint Series
topcoat. The topcoat features Kynar Aquatec polyvinyli-
dene fluoride (PVDF) to make it resistant to fading,
algae, fungus, stains and abrasions. The paints water-
based formula has low VOCs and is warranted to last 15
years against fading. Kynar resins are manufactured by
Arkema, Inc. The homopolymer in Kynar Aquatec is a
tough, engineered thermoplastic that offers a unique bal-
ance of properties, according to the firm. As a result,
NeverFade paint withstands harsh thermal, chemical
and ultraviolet environmental conditions.

I
n the May 2010 Business Corner column,
we commented on new value selling tech-
niques including Winning on Value vs.
Losing on Price-Competing Successfully in a
Me-Too Marketplace. As an after thought, I
felt that a return to the basics, upon the shoul-
ders of which Value-Selling is supported,
would make sense.
I believe Ive read just about every book
available over the past 20-plus years regard-
ing methods to improve profitable sales bat-
ting averages of success. At least it seems
that I have.
Do you agree with the following statement?
There is nothing more vulnerable than a
naked commodity product: naked to its cus-
tomers and its competitors because it has
been stripped of the unique performance
benefits it once enjoyed.
A commodity is vulnerable to three inter-
related business elements:
Price/margin reduction;
Substitution; and
Losing a customer while acquiring a competitor.
Since a commodity product offering can no
longer provide itself with protective barriers
of uniquely advantageous performance, it
must be able to add value to its users in
other ways if it is to survive at all.
One of the most popular ways to add value is
to reduce price. The customer pays less for the
same value. Therefore, the value is enhanced.
A second method to add value is to maintain
price but give more in exchange for that price.
For example, free services, like better terms
conditions, a larger inventory float, deals and
discounts. The customer pays the same price
but receives a greater perceived value.
I would urge you to consider a third
method of value enhancement. I would not
suggest that all so-called commodities can be
converted, but I do know that many can be
converted to higher value to both your cus-
tomers as well as to your own company. What
Im referring to is a method of wrapping the
commodity is a system.
A Commodity System is a package composed
of a commodity product and one or more other
products and related services. It is then sold as
a single unit whose price is based on the sys-
tems ability to add value that the commodity
product alone cannot offer. This value is the eco-
nomic effect of solving a customers cost prob-
lem by reducing the cost or solving a customers
revenue problem by increasing sales.
A commodity product that is packaged in a
system undergoes a conversion. It takes on
some of the most desirable selling attributes of
System development...where value
selling begins: Part 1

branded products. For instance, it can
bear a premium price that is based on
the total systems contribution to the
customer value, NOT the commodity
products cost. Additionally, it can be
sold on the basis of the systems
unique beneficial effects, NOT simply
the commodity products specifica-
tions, terms and conditions. Lastly, a
system can become proprietary,
enabling it to establish customer pref-
erence as contrasted with mere
acceptance, which is the best response
that a commodity product can hope to
generate by itself.
SYSTEM VS. COMMODITY,
THE SELLING ACT IS MUCH
DIFFERENT
To sell a commodity, the seller must
know the product, its technology and
its cost. These considerations are all
internal. The only elements the sell-
er must know are their specifica-
tions, and their purchasing practices,
polices and people.
To sell systems, a seller must know
a great deal more about the cus-
tomers business, especially in two
key subject areas:
Where major costs cluster in cus-
tomer functions and processes that
the sellers systems can affect; and
How a customers ability to sell can
be increased on the other end of the
supply chain.
A successful selling system requires
knowing how to cause a significant
beneficial effect and prove that it will
occur in a customers cost or revenue
structure as a result of the sale.
Specifically, the seller must know in
detail:
Customers costs so that the cus-
tomer profit can be increased as a
direct result of reducing these costs
with a system; and
Customers sales potential so that
the customer profit can be increased
as a direct result of installing the
system.
This monologue is easy to discuss,
but how does system selling work in
the real world? In the next two
columns Chemark will provide exam-
ples and details describing the tacti-
cal art required to bring a commodi-
ty back to acceptable profitability,
provide competitive barriers and
account stability. CW

Lubrizol has launched Turboset Ultra
Pro self-crosslinking waterborne
polyurethane dispersion for use in wood
coatings. A one-component product,
Turboset Ultra Pro dispersion contains
a polymer and crosslinker in one pack-
age and delivers all the performance of
a two-component system, according to
the company. Designed to exhibit excep-
tional floor-wear characteristics, such
as black heel mark and scuff resistance,
Turboset Ultra Pro is ideal for sports
and recreational floors. The nano-sized
polymer particles in Turboset Ultra Pro
urethane dispersion crosslink after
application and continue while drying.
Turboset Ultra Pro exhibits outstand-
ing long-term dispersion stability in pH
ranges from neutral and above. By
reducing application time, the formula
allows for multiple coats per day.
Because addition of crosslinkers is not
required, Turboset Ultra Pro has an
extended pot life that prolongs the abil-
ity to use the material and minimizes
unwanted waste. This also eliminates
many potential health and environmen-
tal hazards, including odor and addi-
tional waste. More info: Lubrizol: 800-

Thompsons Water Seal forms partnership
to support Grand Canyon National Park
T
hompsons Water Seal has announced a new part-
nership to support Grand Canyon National Park
as part of their VIP (Very Important Places) pro-
gram. Thompsons Water Seal will work with the Grand
Canyon Association, donating funds and products to help
protect and preserve wood structures around the Park.
Initially, Thompsons Water Seal Wood Protectors will be
used on projects such as new log construction at the
entrance station, on Inner Canyon signs and trail bridges,
on visitor benches and picnic tables and on privacy fences.
While stunning scenery and wildlife are the primary
draw for our National Parks, they also have many build-
ings and structures that serve guests and Park staff, such
as hotels, housing, stores, visitors centers, campgrounds,
viewing platforms, outdoor theaters for Ranger presenta-
tions, barns and corrals, boardwalks and more. All of the
National Parks face a severe backlog of maintenance
projects, according to the company.
In 2005, Thompsons Water Seal began supporting the
Cave of the Winds Decks at Niagara Falls USA. This
series of decks takes visitors within 15 feet of the base of
Niagara Falls. In 2007, Thompsons added Yellowstone
National Park and Glacier National Park as VIP partners,
and have been able to help them with a number of proj-
ects such as platform restoration, campground improve-
ments and rescuing historic cabins. CW
