How many times have you smelled something amazing and wanted to share it
with the world?
Now you cant.
The makers of something called the oPhone summoned the worlds media on
Tuesday to perform the impossible: To send a smell from one side of the
globe to the other.
David Edwards, an inventor and Harvard professor, will transmit the first-ever
transatlantic scent messages from the American Museum of Natural History to
Le Laboratoire Paris in France, the announcement said.
The worlds media quickly learned that something stinks and its Edwards
oPhone.

As the seriously style-
minded switch their focus

For one thing, users cannot transmit what theyre smelling. Instead, they
choose from a list of 300,000 pre-programmed smells (and no, theres no Katz
pastrami on rye with mustard, or Grimaldis coal oven pie fresh from the oven
or dog poop on Grand St.).
Edwards wanted us to believe his invention is the next best thing to sliced
bread or at least smelling it but the only thing burnt was us. Besides, the
oPhone isnt even available yet.
For now, the only oPhone in the States is at the American Museum of Natural
History but even when working as designed, the smellphone is a bust.
Heres how it works:
1. Take a picture with a normal phone.
2. Fire up Edwards oPhone app, which he calls oSnap.
3. Select one or more of the 300,000 preloaded scents.
4. Email or text the photo, which Edwards calls an oNote, to any recipient with
an oPhone, which is basically like three people in the world.
5. The recipient turns on his oPhone though it would be wise to see if the
oChips, which actually produce the scene, are full.

Sounds great except that the smell in your nostrils is not actually the smell
that spews from the oPhone on the other side of the world.
Even Edwards admitted that he isnt sure of the practical applications of the
oPhone but hes fundraising anyway.
We want the oPhone to really satisfy a need, Edwards said. And were
discovering what that is over the next few months.
