Q4FY14 Winners OFFICE OF THE CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER Travis Elkins Nominated by: Martin Winders In the past year, the OCIO has supported the Mansfield Campus of The Ohio State University. As a result, Travis began reporting through the IT Service Desk. Since April, I have learned what an asset Travis has been in representing the OCIO to Mansfield. Travis became a new employee in our organization and immediately jumped in. He has set up numerous employees with new computers, set up multiple lab and classroom spaces, served on security committees on main campus, and managed the Mansfield Active Directory. What has impressed me the most about Travis is his willingness to embrace change and his great attitude. Thank you Travis. J ohn Ferguson Nominated by: Martin Winders J ohn has recently begun reporting through the IT Service Desk. He has become an asset in representing the OCIO to Mansfield. J ohn, as the lone holdover from the former Mansfield IT staff, has been instrumental in so many ways. He has worked closely with networking to transition Mansfield's network to OCIO. He has worked on the Audit document, their server environment, as well as many other projects. What has impressed me the most about J ohn is his willingness to embrace change. He is concerned about what is best for the customer and how we can make their experience better. Thank you J ohn. Marilyn Farish Award Q4FY14 Nominees OFFICE OF THE CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER
Cristian Uribe Nominated by: Ryan Holland Recently, an incident was escalated to Networking Wireless, and the content was a welcomed surprise. Having originated in our organization from 8help, I fully appreciate the massive workload and materials the analysts must orchestrate. So, while I dream as a member of an escalation group to be handed every incident detail founded through a rigorous 8help triage session, I know this is an unfair expectation.
Cristian, on the other hand, has altered my expectations. His diligent efforts in INC2789643, before escalating to our group, got us all the information we needed, allowing us to immediately assess the need to engage the user and troubleshoot the problem live. In the end, it uncovered an error committed during a recent change, allowing for expedient resolution. Cristian rose above the overwhelming incident volume at the IT Service Desk, performed as an excellent liaison for our wireless service and was able to provide excellent troubleshooting to this user. Q4FY14 Winners OFFICE OF THE CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER Alan Albertus GEM Award J ason Miller Nominated by: Dan Struble and Martin Winders Dan St r ubl e J ason has been tasked with, among other things, providing oversight of OCIO vulnerability remediation efforts. His skills and efforts in communication between various teams combined with his technical understanding of specific security threats have quickly proven to be highly effective. The resolution rate of detected vulnerabilities has increased significantly, particularly in regard to long-standing, unresolved issues. His continued efforts will have a significant positive impact on the security of OCIO systems. Mar t i n Wi nder s J ason Miller has been the backbone of the transition and support of Business Finance. J ason's vast knowledge of the networking environment for BFAP, his willingness to continue managing their Active Directory and his attitude toward collaboration are unmatched. J ason has been put into many crucial initiatives, and what I personally appreciate the most about him is his understanding of both the technical side AND the more important business side. J ason has been instrumental in the vision of Mansfield support. His technical expertise was used in the SACM process for reviewing possibilities for bringing in data. And most recently, he has been instrumental in the onboarding of Wexner Center for the Arts. Thank you J ason. Q4FY14 Winners OFFICE OF THE CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER Alan Albertus GEM Award Eric Neiford Nominated by: J im Tufano and Ryan Holland Ji m Tuf ano In his first year with OCIO, Eric has been a great asset to our team and, in particular, in his role in managing firewall changes. He has gone above and beyond to assure that changes related to the HR/SIS upgrade are completed as expected and when needed. He has also greatly reduced the complexity of the Data Center firewall by taking measures to reduce the number of rules listed from 12,000 to under 6,000. Ryan Hol l and Eric's primary responsibility is managing, maintaining and operating OCIO Networking's firewalls, specifically the ones securing the data center network. Every firewall request requiring access into the data center involves Eric, and I'm sure you can imagine that this adds up to a lot of requests! One could assume a level of monotony involved with request after request, but this is not true with Eric. He is COMPLETELY accountable and has streamlined it to ensure that rules can be executed very quickly. Eric also integrates a great deal of foresight into how firewall rules are built. He identifies duplicates and unneeded rules, and sees opportunities for consolidated rules and objects. This year, he has cut the number of rules IN HALF from ~12,000 to ~6,000. For those that don't manage firewalls (likely everyone reading this), that is a HUGE accomplishment and is nowhere near trivial. Numerous systems engineers, database administrators and other IT personnel have developed a strong working relationship with Eric, stemmed primarily from his uncanny attention to detail, his reliability and competency, and, of course, his easygoing personality and approachability. I can easily say that Eric is a wonderful member of our team, but more importantly, OCIO is lucky to have someone like Eric on board. He is a team member that goes above and beyond every single day. OFFICE OF THE CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER Q4FY14 Nominations J im Herbeck Nominated by: Matthew Williams and Terry Allen Mat t hew Wi l l i ams J im has been with the university for a year now, and has encouraged change from the moment he arrived. He has been the lead on the Security Framework Blue Chip project all year and has done an amazing job. The complements we hear about the "new" OCIO being more open and honest are largely due to this project and the excellence in J im's presentation and communication skills. J im strives to help organizations document and implement effective and simple business and information technology processes. Ter r y Al l en J im Herbeck is in charge of the Security Framework effort. He managed to organize and execute this huge effort in a more efficient and quick manner than I have ever seen done throughout my career in security. He ensured that all units across the university had a chance to be deeply involved in the project and was there to be a true SME in the meetings where the controls were discussed. When needed, he provided the necessary coaching so that the meetings went smoothly, and he has acted with integrity and accountability since I have known him. Kathy Mosca Nominated by: Lisby Roberson Kathy Mosca is a sterling employee. When I email Kathy, it is nearly always something that is a problem. She responds quickly and is always so pleasant, regardless of the complexity of the problem. She is quick to figure out a solution, and makes it as easy for me as possible. I appreciate her so much. Alan Albertus GEM Award Mandy Gagliardi Nominated by: Katherine Margard I am so appreciative of the presentation about BuckeyeBox that Mandy Gagliardi did at the third annual OSU Administrative Professionals conference. We know that there's a pent-up need among the OSUAP members to learn more about how to effectively use this tool. The feedback I heard about Mandy's presentation was very positive, and I'm so grateful for her sharing her time and expertise and making an important contribution to our conference. About 150 administrative professionals are now going to be much more proficient in using BuckeyeBox because of her. Ajit Kapoor Nominated by: Vikramjit Dhillon Ajit has been working on the AutoSys team as part of the PeopleSoft upgrade project. He has given immense support to new hires by training them. He has also been working around the clock to ensure that AutoSys development is done on time, with quality, and does not negatively impact the overall project. Kudos to Ajit for the great work! OFFICE OF THE CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER Q4FY14 Nominations Mike Belair Nominated by: J anette Ashcraft Mike's commitment to excellence was very evident in taking over the support of the eReports Application and being the sole supporter of this application for such a long time. He makes sure it is up, available and running everyday. Mike always acts with integrity and accountability and exhibits this commitment in supporting both eReports and Data Warehouse Applications. Mike also exhibits a commitment to strive for simplicity when he works with multiple customers across the university. He always helps customers when they need it, even when he could have sent them to a different group to resolve the issues for the user. Alan Albertus GEM Award Kristi Davis Nominated by: Bob Corbin Buckeye Box is a service used by thousands at the university, but very few understand the effort that takes place behind the scenes to make the service available to everyone. Over the past two years, Kristi Davis has been instrumental in reaching out to the IT Leadership and Departmental Fiscal officers to explain the cost share model, provide answers to everyone's questions and ultimately transfer funds in a transparent manner. Without Kristi's attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile, the OCIO and our customers would not realize the benefit of Buckeye Box and the positive impacts to the very broad customer base of faculty, staff, and students. Thank you very much Kristi. Max Treboni Nominated by: Martin Winders If there is one individual who has an understanding of every single service that the OCIO provides, it is Max Treboni. Max is committed to bringing his knowledge and positive attitude as a leader in the OCIO IT Service Desk every day. Each month, Max provides the most clear and concise reports pertaining to the progress of the IT Service Desk. Max has the best demeanor when dealing with an upset customer; I have personally seen him maneuver through some of the most difficult phone calls. He listens to the customer, allows them to vent and gets them an answer. I can't think of a single time where a customer has gotten off the phone with Max not feeling like they were given the most complete possible answer. Max was instrumental in the combining of support for OHR and Business Finance/Administration and Planning, both with leading almost all of the new employees that joined our organization and working to build out the pricing model that has been agreed to by all organizations for the desktop refresh process. Max is working with Wexner Center for the Arts to quickly and efficiently move them away from their VDI environment and onto desktops. He was also instrumental in the desktop provisioning process and tracking of desktop assets leading the group in this process. South Oval Network Project Team
Members: Mark J ackson, Craig Sherratt, Garret Harmon, J ay Tallman, Rich Zellner, Andrew Kuno, J ason Mcdonald, J ason Miller, (Gudenkauf: Brandon Kauffer, J esse Mayle, Tom Houston)
Nominated by: J ohn Link During the day of the South Oval concert, the event staff called early afternoon to tell us that one of the performers for the concert they booked was going to need a hard wired network connection. In addition to my network team, the list of people above did an outstanding job of pulling a rabbit out of their hat. The Gudenkauf team immediately started looking in tunnels and working on the process of acquiring fiber to make a whole new run when Mark J ackson remembered that the fiber at the bus stop was no longer being used. The entire team reacted quickly and had the connection up and running by 5 pm. It was a great example of being responsive and working together to quickly solve an unexpected challenge. I extend my thanks and appreciation to this team on an outstanding job of customer service. OFFICE OF THE CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER Team GEM Award Q4FY14 Winners Drupal Content Management Team
Members: Pat Leonard, Chris Gross, Luke Gaddie
Nominated by: Beth Varcho The Drupal content management platform has a growing user base on campus. The OCIO Marketing, Communications and Training set as a goal for 2014 the migrating of the main OCIO website from Silverstripe to Drupal. We wanted to make the transition seamless to the end user, and the Digital Design and Innovation team of Luke, Chris and Pat were able to do this through a collaborative effort of systems administration, Drupal expertise, and documentation and training efforts. Building on the success of the 2013 ASSIST Drupal migration, the team applied content-migration techniques from that project to the OCIO effort, moving 379 pages. Additionally, the team went beyond the scope of the project to include a WordPress Community blog in the migration, moving an additional 859 pages of content from WordPress to Drupal, thus reducing the number of separate systems the Communications team needs to use in order to maintain the OCIO site. Additionally, the team authored Knowledge Base articles explaining the key administrative functions of the new OCIO Drupal site. Prior to launch, training sessions were held with the OCIO employees who will be maintaining content going forward. Thus, content editors were productive on the new system the very first day of the migration, and there was no major interruptions in service to the at-large University community.
