1. HEAT TREATMENT EQUIPMENT

1.1 Accuracy and uni formit y
Sub-supplier shall prove the accuracy and uniformity of the heat-treatment equipment
used in the specific temperature-time range.
For existing equipment, documented results of actual heat treatments performed in the
preceding year may be considered.

For new equipment, the accuracy and uniformity shall be measured on at least two test
treatments.

1.2 Loading / Unloading facili ties.

Sub-supplier shall have suitable
means for loading / unloading by
transportation trucks, to minimize
the risk of damage of the castings.

1.3 Loading / Unloading of
furnaces.

Furnace construction shall allow easy
loading and unloading of the castings, to
minimize risk of damage to the casting
and placing the castings in the furnace
properly.
Castings shall be evenly distributed on the
furnace floor and in such a way that no
direct flame contact with the castings can
take place.
No stacking of castings is allowed.

1.4 Furnace Floor

The furnace floor shall be
levelled out to prevent distortion
of the castings during heat-
treatment.

Next figure shows an example
of a non-sufficiently levelled
floor.

1.5 Burner posi ti on.

Burner position shall be such that no
direct flame contact with the casting
can take place.

Oil burner.

2. PROCESS CONTROL

2.1 Personnel
All personnel performing heat treatments and temperature measurements shall be clearly
instructed and qualified for these processes.

2.2 Writ ten procedures
Written procedures, relevant to the processes and documentation involved, shall be
available for reference at site.

2.3 Number of thermocouples
The number of thermo-couples to be used shall be adapted to the dimensions of the
furnace as well as the casting dimensions and distributed evenly over bottom and top
parts of the castings.
Typical five couples are used, of which three couples are used for registering
temperatures and two couples are used for control purposes.

2.4 Thermocouple attachment

A couple shall be in direct contact with the casting surface. No local welding is allowed.

Thermocouple is covered with isolating Couples are connected with special
sheet and weighted. connectors to compensation wires.

2.5 Dat a Recording

Recording instruments shall be connected to the thermo-couples by compensation cables
and special connectors.

Temperatures measured, shall be recorded on a calibrated instrument, during the full heat
treatment cycle.

Each measuring instrument shall have a calibration sticker showing instrument
identification number, date of last and next calibration.

3. CALIBRATION

3.1 Cal ibration of Thermocouples

All thermo-couples used in the
heat-treatment process are
purchased in a calibrated
state.
Thermo-couples can only be
used in a relative short period
(average 30 treatments),
before couples are replaced.
No risk for aging exists during
this period.

periodically (yearly).
Calibration results shall be documented.

4. DOCUMENTATION

4.1 Heat Treatment Instruction

A document called Shipping form accompanies the castings that have to be heat treated.
This documents shows:
* Type, number and description of the casting;
* Order number
* Serial number
* Heat treatment specification number.
