Harry Burton (18791940)

Breve biografa
Harry Burton naci en en Stamford , Lincolnshire,quinto hijo de los 11 que tuvieron la pareja
formada por el ebanista William Burton y su esposa Ann Hufton. Robert Needham Cust ,
abogado durante 20 aos de la East India Company,ya retirado,regres a a Inglaterra y se
dedic por completo a sus estudios.Tomo al joven Harry bajo su proteccin y le financi sus
estudios.Posteriormente,ambos viajan a Florencia,Burton en calidad de secretario de
Cust.All Harry alcanza notoriedad como fotgrafo de talento.Conoce Theodore M. Davis y
en 1910 ste le contrata para sus excavaciones en Tebas,primero como fotgrafo y luego
como director de excavaciones .En 1914, cuando Davis renunci a su licencia de
excavacin,entr al servicio de la expedicin Egiptolgica del MET como fotgrafo, cargo que
desempe hasta su muerte el 27de junio de 1940 en Assiut.Fue enterrado en el
Cementerio Americano de la misma ciudad.
En 1922 fue cedido por el museo a Howard Carter para registrar los hallazgos del equipo
de excavacin britnica en la tumba de Tutankamn.Durante 8 aos (10,segn algunos
autores ) estuvo fotografiando la excavacin y todos los objetos de la tumba.
Una parte de su prolfico legado fotogrfico se encuentra en el MET y la otra, junto con los
documentos de Howard Carter , en el Instituto Griffith, Oxford, Reino Unido.
