A very special welcome to Charlie Murdoch, Flynn Kane, Violet
Murphy, Danika Campbell and their families to Kaikorai Primary
School!
PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
Schools have changed a lot since most of us were
students. Sometimes we hear parents lamenting
that we need to get back to good old fashioned teaching
and it can be hard to correlate what we experienced at school
and what your child is experiencing now. This change in
teaching and how children learn is a positive. I am sure we
would all be concerned if our health profession hadnt
improved over the last 20-30 years and kept up with the latest
advancements in medicine.
Noted Clinical Psychologist Nigel Latta screened an excellent
documentary on the New Zealand schooling system this week
which I would urge all parents to view. It provides an insight
into why we group students, the use of technology in the
classroom and the decile ratings to name just a few issues.

This week the senior staff have been visiting some of the
rebuilt schools in Christchurch and have been impressed with
how new learning environments are reecting and enhancing
the way we teach children.
Kind Regards
Simon Clarke

SCHOOL NEWS SYNDI CATE NEWS
Middle News -
Fitness, sports and games have been keeping the Middle Syndicate busy this term.
Children have been running once or twice a day in preparation for the Cross Country. We have a new running
track (1km!) and it has been great to see children setting themselves goals and already showing improvement.
This has been helping us work towards running a total of 40km before the Childrens Marathon on September
14
th
.
The Commonwealth Games have been a great kickstarter for us to learn about what the Commonwealth is,
places in the Commonwealth, their ags, and national symbols. Different classes have been learning about the
history of the Commonwealth Games (or Friendly Games). Children have also been identifying sporting areas
where New Zealand has consistently performed well over the years. Comparing the population sizes of countries
on the medal table has also helped children realise the signicance of our small nations achievements.
Middle Syndicate swimming will take place between September 1 12. Information about costs and times will
follow closer to the time.
Junior News
We are so excited to be starting our big focus for the term this coming week The Solar System. This
topic promises to be one that will capture your childs imagination and interest. If you have any books
or resources to share with your childs class please send them along.
Our Commonwealth Games focus has had the children enthused and excited. Many have avidly
followed the events each day sharing their knowledge with the class. We have looked at Scotland as a
country, being a good sports person and what the Commonwealth Games is.
What a wonderful spell of weather we have had lately but the winter is not over and all children need
warm coats every day, please ensure that they have one hanging on their hook.
With Independence as our KAIK value focus this term we are encouraging the children to pack and
unpack their own bags and be independent in their work habits in the classroom. You as parents play
a big part in allowing your child to be independent. Thank you for all the work you do. We would love
to see you at PMP and Fun Friday. Lists for you to ll in are on classroom walls.
Senior News
The Senior Classes have started the term learning about World War One. War was declared 100 years
ago on August 4
th
, and there were many events that led up to it. Children have been reading journal
stories and picture books, writing using strong verbs and specic nouns, and singing songs that were
popular during WW1. They have been explaining their learning in PMI charts, labeled diagrams and
poetry. Next week our four classes start some mixing up in the syndicate and will be further developing
our learning using The Arts - Dances, Music, Drama and Visual Art works. We will continue to use
the songs and stories of WW1. There will also be some extra emphasis on co-operative learning
strategies where they will develop a timeline of events of WW1, and a jigsaw activity where the
children research people who had an impact or held differing points of view during WW1 and WW2.
Cross country training has been our main tness focus, and children have enjoyed keeping track of
their cumulative distances and improving their well being.

School Ski Trip
Over 40 people braved some very
cold conditions last weekend and
attended the school ski trip to
Cardrona. You can see just how
cold it was by Olivias frozen hair!
The fresh snow made up for the
cold conditions and it sounds like
everyone had a great time.
Information about the next school
ski trip to Cardrona in September
is on the school web site.
A huge thank you to Anna
Ollerenshaw who has organised
the trips!
Enrichment
For the last six weeks Mrs Martin has been working with our students who display
strengths in Reading, Mathematics and Science. The group have been focusing on
taking part in the ICAS exams and the upcoming OMathalon. The ICAS exams
are a set of formal tests that over one million students from over 6,300 schools in
Australia and New Zealand sit annually. In addition, students from over 20 countries
including Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA
participate in ICAS each year. Students who achieve high distinction, distinction,
credit or merit will receive their certicates over the next few assemblies.
Our next enrichment group is art based where they will be exploring lots of different
drawing media with a focus on some local artists. They will be creating a large
artwork inspired by signicant local scenes from around Dunedin.
KPSTV
The KPSTV crew have increased
their production rate and have
nished their third episode and
nearly nished their fourth passing
all of the episodes made for the
whole of last year.
Their latest show can be found here.

Health Programmes Community Consultation
Every year, schools conduct a review of their health programmes. This
year the Board of Trustees is doing a full review of the delivery of the
Health and Physical Education curriculum. Your feedback provided at
bit.ly/1ssTP6e will contribute to developing our programmes. Over the
last two years we have included issues such as cyber bullying and people
with disabilities due to parent feedback.
The school will also be completing a bullying survey in the senior classes
and all Year 4 students will take part in a physical education activity as
part of the self review.
