 DECLINING INVITATION AND REQUEST FOR FAVOR

A refusal letter to speak at a conference.

Dear Sam,

The International Institute of Chemical Engineering (IICE) has a great deal to offer
university professors, and I have enjoyed the annual conference for several years. I
appreciate very much invitation to be the keynote speaker for this year’s conference in Bara
Gali, Abbotabad on July 14, 2005.

The date of the conference is, unfortunately, during a two-week period when I will be
in New Zealand for meeting with a research group. I did make an effort to reschedule these
meetings, but I was unable to do so. I regret not being able to address this important forum
and having to miss the conference itself.
