Vol. 11 No.8 August 2014

Thoughts for the Month:
I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself, this is hungry Jesus, I must feed him.
This is sick Jesus. This one has leprosy or gangrene; I must wash him and tend to him.
I serve because I love Jesus.
Mother Teresa

From the Pastors Desk:
I was reminded again this past Saturday about the above quote from Mother Teresa. Once or twice a
month, someone stops by the church needing help in some way. This past weekend the stranger arrived
by bicycle. The man was biking his way to Chicago. He stopped at the church looking for something to
drink and hopefully a little money to help him get his clothes washed and stay somewhere to take a
shower. He had recently been in Boston, Portland and through New Hampshire. I gave him a glass of ice
water and he sat in my office and talked while he rested from his ride.
I learned that he had spent 22 years in a federal prison for trying to smuggle cocaine into the United
States from Mexico. He wished he had succeeded because he would be rich but told me it wasnt worth
it in the long run because it changed his entire life. He now had nothing so he decided to bike around the
country and write about his experience, if he was lucky he might be able to make a book and get it
published. While biking across New Hampshire, he had his wallet stolen. That meant he had no
identification or the required picture ID needed to stay at a mission or shelter for the night. His plan was
to get to Chicago where he had friends who would help him get his identification replaced. He had seen
people eating in the Fellowship Hall when we walked through it to my office and asked if he could have
something to eat. The Grimes Family was having a reunion in the Hall that day and Stephanie graciously
fixed him a plate of food. He stayed for about an hour before riding to his next place. Through the God
Fund, I was able to give him a little money and found a map of the State of Vermont to help him figure
out which way he would ride to New York.
The God Fund that we have at the church allows your pastor to help with small emergency assistance
and to help a transient visitor who stops at the church on their way through town. Sometimes the need is
help with gas for the car, other times it is a pair of socks or food. Recently there have been a couple of
folks needing help to travel to the funeral of a loved one; another who needed money for gas for the car
to get to a doctors appointment; a request to help pay for medicine for a child; and a request for food.
The requests are usually small often $40.00 or less or a Hannaford Gift Card.
A few months ago, Bob and Jane Welch were in the church when one such stranger came by. He was
hitchhiking to the Burlington area from Pennsylvania to visit his daughter. He was hungry and needed
some money to help with food. All he had was the backpack he carried with him. While I gave him a
cup of coffee, Jane and Bob went to the Pittsford Food Shelf for an emergency pack. The Food Shelf
keeps some basic supplies: a frozen loaf of bread, peanut butter and jelly, etc. available for such
situations. I was grateful that Bob and Jane were there and could access that resource for this man that
day.
Our community dinners help us resupply the God Fund and I am grateful to all of you for supporting
this cause. In addition, the Bowen-Walker Fund has also helped resupply this fund. This is one of the
ways the church helps those in need. It is also one way that we as a church can see Jesus Christ in every
human being. It exemplifies radical hospitality to all who cross the threshold of our church doors.
Thank you for helping to meet the needs of these people.

Blessings,
Pastor Pat

From the Pastoral Relations Committee

Give Us a Piece of Your Mind - And Heart and Soul!

The Pastoral Relations Committee is gearing up to begin feedback
and reflection groups as a way to look at the experiences people have
in the various aspects of our church life and missions. The first
feedback/reflection group will focus on communications. The
committee will be calling to invite a small group to participate in this
first one that will take place in October. Future opportunities will
become available to participate in one of the groups. We will keep
you posted about this process. Good feedback is to our community
life what breathing and eating are to our biological lives!

For further info or questions contact Jane Wilson, Carolyn Kingsley,
Dorothy Terwilliger, or Elizabeth Frost.
