The Washington County Fair recently announced the
winners chosen as the 2014 Leading Citizens. Winners
were nominated by the community and were selected
based on current activities, community service and
involvement and volunteer activities. They are all 60
years old or older and examples of AGING WITH PUR-
POSE and contributing to the lives of others.
The Leading Citizen Award winners were recog-
nized Wednesday, July 23, at a special program during
Senior Day at the Washington County Fair.
The 2014 Leading Citizen Award recipients are:
JOHN D. ZINK, age 81, is very active. His daugh-
ter says that the older he gets the more active he gets.
John attends exercise classes two times per week at the
Senior Center. John is the Treasurer of his condo associ-
ation. He serves on the American Legion West Bend
board for members as 1st Vice President. He is an elder
on his church council and attends a Bible class every
Wednesday. In addition to these activities he is an elec-
tion judge for all elections held in the City of West Bend.
John also worked concessions at the Bradley Center
this past winter for the American Legion. His hobbies
include reading, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, traveling
with his wife of 50 years, Louise.
ELAINE M. LAABS, age 86, lives in Germantown
and is active in the Germantown community in a variety
of ways. Elaine takes care of the gardens around the
Germantown Senior Center, sews patches on the
Germantown Police uniforms, makes quilts for the Lioness
group, and assists the Germantown Senior Center in its
fundraising ef forts. She is the Secretary of the
Germantown Senior Citizen club. Elaines leadership
qualities are evident as a Girl Scout leader, chat and
craft group, and as a leader of a Dart Ball group. She
provides service to our military troops by leading a knit-
ting group who knits caps for troops to wear under their
helmets.
She loves to sew, knit, crochet, and play Bingo and
Dart ball.

The Rubicon Red Sox remained in first
place in the Rock River Northern Division
with two games left in the regular season.
The Red Sox had a 13-3 record while the
Kewaskum A's were in second place with
a 12-3 record.
Rubicon will play at Kewaskum at
noon Aug. 8 before closing the season by
hosting Hustisford Aug. 10.
Hartford was fourth in the division
with a 10-4 record. Hartford lost at
Slinger Aug. 3, 3-1. The Hawks close the
season by hosting Juneau at 7:30 p.m.
Aug. 8 which will be followed by a home
game against Lebanon at 1:30 p.m. Aug.

The West Bend Benders finished the
regular season with a 4-1 win over the
Saukville Saints. Jake Kopp recorded six

the Land O'Lakes West Division with a

Lighting is one of the most important fea-
tures of a home, indoors and out. It provides
illumination for tasks inside and keeps bur-
glars away outside. When chosen well, light-
ing can also enhance a homes beauty. Here
are some tips the next time you change or
add to your outdoor lighting.
Outdoor lighting comes in many types.
Post lights are mounted on a post, which is
usually located near the driveway. Wall
lights are mounted on walls near exterior
doorson each side of the garage door, for
example. Ceiling mount lights are mounted
on the ceiling of a porch or portico to illumi-
nate the front entrance. Hanging lights serve
the same purpose as ceiling mount lights but
make more of a statement in grand
entrances and tall porches.
Make a list of the outdoor lights you
need and the amount you have to spend,
and then get ready to shop. Outdoor lights
come in a variety of styles. Look for a style
that complements the style of your home.
While lanterns might work well for a beach
house, they may not suit your contemporary
home. You might need a sleeker, cleaner
style.
Finish is another aspect to consider.
Again, look to your house as a guide. If you
have a lot of brass, brass fixtures are the
way to go. If you have a lot of ironwork,
look for black fixtures. If you have a lot of
chrome, look for chrome fixtures.
Scale is vital. Too small or too large of
lights can detract from the beauty of your
home. Look for appropriate sized lights. If
you are looking for wall lights for a two-story
home, for example, you should focus on
lights that are 18 to 24 inches tall. Pay atten-
tion to the elements in the area where the
lights will go. While you might adore hang-
ing lights, having one in your small portico
might not work. You dont want guests hitting
their head on the light every time they enter
or exit your home.

needs and look for the right style, finish and
scale to create a safe, secure, beautiful
home.

CHRISTA KERSTEN, age 74, lives in
West Bend. Christa makes extraordinary
effort to serve the people of the West
Bend community. She works with the
Interfaith Caregivers one to two times per
week helping people with their chores,
driving them to doctors appointments,
shopping for them and with them, any
work that they want her to do. Christa
also volunteers at the Humane Society one
day a week. The staff there looks forward
to her help to clean the pet cages. Christa
also volunteers at the West Bend Library
filling the reserve requests of Library
patrons. She also helps with the summer
reading program.
She spends time knitting hats and mit-
tens for the mitten tree at the Library and
for the Gingerbread House at Christmas
time. Christa is an avid Tennis player. She
plays every Tuesday in three tennis
leagues and has many trophies from her
participation in Tennis tournaments. She
enjoys tending her garden plot with her
husband and listening to classical music.
JAMES MAERSCH, age 79, of West
Bend is a friendly guy always ready with
a joke, kind word and and a piece of
candy. James served as a reading special-
ist for the West Bend School District for 31
years. He was named the Outstanding
Naval Reservist Ready Command Region
16, has received the Legionnaire of the
Year award from Legion Post 36 in West
Bend. He was also a winner of the WBKV
top teacher contest.
His service to the community includes
participation in the West Bend Police
Department Crime Prevention Patrol and a
19 year member of the American Legion
post 36, West Bend. He is also on the
board of directors for the Korean War
Veterans Association. He is commander of
the West Bend Veterans color guard and
firing squad. James serves on the
Memorial Day parade committee for West
Bend and is a member of the West Bend
Safety Commission.
He has also served as Cub Scout
Master for Pack 3782, and a West Bend
Police crossing guard. His involvement
with St Johns Lutheran Church includes
serving as a congregational coordinator
and usher, bible study leader. He spent
his career as a teacher of reading and is
President of the Washington-Ozaukee
Reading Council and newsletter editor for
20 years.
