SETS 6000 can be used either as a single user
program, or be set up on a network as a client-
server application. With the client/server version,
the main database will be resident in a file server
and the program interface can run from several
workstations used simultaneously.
Software and hardware requirements to run SETS
6000.
G At least a PC Pentium III with a minimum of
64Mb of RAM. There must be sufficient hard
disk space to store the number of questions
expected to be used.
G SETS 6000 runs under MS Windows 95, 98,
2000, NT4, ME and XP. The package is
distributed on CD-ROM.
G SETS 6000 is continuously upgraded to run on
the latest operating software systems provided
by Microsoft.

FEATURES OF SETS 6000
T
esting and evaluation of knowledge is now an
important aspect of recruitment, promotion
and periodic assessment of seafarers.
Assessment (and records of assessments) is an
essential element of any quality management
regime or safety management system.
SETS was introduced in 1995 and has been highly
successful. SETS has now been redesigned and
updated to SETS 6000, and includes a database of
over 6000 questions.
SETS 6000 is powerful computer based testing
package designed to assess that standards of
training and competence are maintained at the
STCW defined level.
The package has a large question database with
multiple-choice questions and answers. The
questions are classified according to STCW
defined levels of Management, Operation and
Support and are further divided into subject areas
that cover each important maritime competence
as defined by the STCW 95 Convention.
SETS 6000 is a key tool for competency-based
testing as required within STCW 95.
G SETS 6000 is very easy to use for the applicant
and very little previous computer knowledge is
needed.
G The Administrator has complete control of the
test settings but predefined tests can be locked
from editing.
G During a test, the questions are presented
randomly but chosen according to criteria of
rank, STCW level and subject.
G Quality and appearance of questions are
enhanced by the use of relevant photographs,
sound and graphics.
G Answers are marked automatically and printed
if required.
G Scores from one candidate can be assessed
against others using the same criteria.
G Test results are available for fast
convenient retrieval at any time.
G Powerful facility to export
results to remotely installed
SETS 6000 packages.
G The use of SETS 6000
tests requires minimum
use of the
Administrators time
compared with written
tests.
G SETS 6000 is a key tool
for competency-based
testing as required within
STCW 95. It is designed for
use onboard and ashore.
G The Administrator can set the
number of questions in a test and the
maximum time allowed.
G Exceptional facilities for showing test results
and production of reports.
G Optional facility to print paper tests.
G SETS 6000 is fully network capable.
SETS 6000 has a large database of multiple-
choice questions containing over 6000 questions.
The questions are classified into the STCW
competence levels of Management, Operation
and Support and are also structured in
accordance with the STCW Code. This structuring
makes it possible to generate quality-verified
tests suitable for a wide range of seafarers.
Quetions range widely across the seven
STCW functional areas, and include
non-STCW subject areas.
The SETS 6000 question
database was produced under
the supervision of Videotel
Marine International and all
questions were designed and
controlled by experienced
maritime professionals. The
package is ideal to assess
competence as defined by the
STCW 95 convention and can
be used for:
G assessing competence of
applicants
G assessing training requirements
G assessing qualifications of crew onboard ships
SETS 6000 can be supported by a question
designer that makes it possible for users to design
their own questions, adding pictures, animations
and sound to any question. The question designer
allows the design three types of question, these are:
I multiple choice questions
I fill in missing word
I essay type questions
The package automatically marks the first two
types whereas the Administrator manually marks
the latter. The question designer is a powerful
facility allowing users the unique opportunity to
create completely customised questions and
answers. So testing on any aspect of company
policy or procedures can be easily built into SETS
6000.
The SETS 6000 Administrator program can be
easily set up to produce any combination of tests
by questions from one or several STCW functional
areas and from any of the three STCW
competence levels. When a test is given, the
questions from each including subject are
automatically and randomly selected. Choose from
over 6000 questions.
Tests can be exported to remote SETS 6000
installations thereby making it possible for main
offices to standardise assessment at all their
recruitment centres.
SETS 6000 includes three types of result reports
and a summary report presenting multiple test
results in one datasheet. All reports in SETS 6000
can be directly converted to suitable file formats
and transferred by fax or by e-mail via the Internet.
Test results can be exported in groups and
imported into SETS 6000 installations at other
sites. This makes it possible for head offices to
compare test results from different recruitment
centres or training facilities.
