In Londons Oxford Circus
JK Rowling Comes
Out Against Scottish
Independence
By Jill Lawless
HARRY POTTER creator JK Rowling waded into the world of Muggle politics last
month, announcing a 1m donation to the
campaign against Scottish independence.
Scots will vote in a September 18 referendum on whether to leave their 300-yearold union with England and become an
independent country.
Rowling, who lives in Edinburgh, said
she had decided that while independence
might give us opportunities ... it also carries serious risks.
The more I listen to the Yes campaign,
the more I worry about its minimization
and even denial of risks, she wrote.
MICROSURGERY
This separation will not be quick
and clean: it will take microsurgery to
disentangle three centuries of close interdependence.
Rowling said she was particularly concerned about the impact on the economy
and on funding for medical research in
Scotland. She has donated millions to the
fight against multiple sclerosis, the disease
that killed her mother.
Rowling said the referendum would
be a historic moment for Scotland. I just
hope with all my heart that we never have
cause to look back and feel that we made
a historically bad mistake.
Rowling, one of Britains wealthiest
writers, made a substantial donation to
the anti-independence Better Together
campaign. Spokesman Mark Hutchinson
confirmed the donation was 1m.
ENERGETIC
Polls show the anti-independence side
narrowly ahead among Scottish voters, but
pro-independence forces have run a betterfunded and more energetic campaign.
Rowling predicted that some proindependence campaigners would discount
her views because she was born and raised
in England. She likened that stance to the
obsession with pure wizard blood of the
villainous characters in her magical saga.
When people try to make this debate
about the purity of your lineage, things
start getting a little Death Eaterish for my
taste, she wrote.

Inspectors Criticise
Schools Over
Islamist Plot

By Jill Lawless
THE BRITISH government last month
announced that schools would be required
to teach British values after inspectors
found governors with hard-line Muslim
views had intimidated teachers and imposed religiously motivated restrictions
at several schools.
Inspectors were called in after an anonymous letter alleged a plot called Operation
Trojan Horse by Muslim fundamentalists
to infiltrate schools in the central England
city of Birmingham.
Authorities believe the letter was a
hoax, but the alleged plot triggered several
inquiries and inflamed tensions in Britains
second-largest city, which has a large
Muslim population.
Inspectors said they had found a culture of fear and intimidation at a minority
of the 21 schools it inspected, and five
of them failed to protect students from
extremism.
Chief schools inspector Michael
Wilshaw said there was evidence of an
organized campaign to target certain
schools by some members of their governing bodies.
PROMOTED
Inspectors said governors had promoted
a narrow faith-based ideology at some
schools, whose students are overwhelmingly from Muslim backgrounds. At one
school, governors attempted to ban mixedsex swimming lessons; at another, music
lessons were dropped because they were
considered un-Islamic; and at a third, governors vetted the script for a nativity play
and told staff they could not use a doll to
represent the baby Jesus.
Staff and some head teachers variously described feeling intimidated,
undermined or bullied by governors,
and sometimes by senior staff, into making
changes they did not support, Wilshaw
said.
Park View Educational Trust, which
runs three of the criticised schools, rejected
the inspectors verdict and said it would
launch a legal challenge. Vice chairman
David Hughes said the inspectors came
to our schools looking for extremism.
EXPOSED
The Trojan Horse furor exposed a
feud between Education Secretary Michael
Gove and Home Secretary Theresa May,
who is responsible for law and order.

RRJury Finds
Coulson Guilty
Of Phone
Hacking,
Brooks
Acquitted

By Jill Lawless
TWO POWERFUL British political insiders met starkly different fates June 24 as
former News of the World editor Andy
Coulson was convicted of phone hacking
but fellow editor Rebekah Brooks was
acquitted, after a month-long trial centering on illegal activity at the heart of Rupert
Murdochs newspaper empire.
A jury at Londons Old Bailey unanimously found Coulson, the former spin
doctor of British Prime Minister David
Cameron, guilty of conspiring to intercept
communications by eavesdropping on
mobile phone voicemails. Brooks was
acquitted of that charge and of counts of
conspiring to bribe officials and obstruct
police.
The nearly eight-month trial one of
the longest and most expensive in British
legal history was triggered by revelations that for years the News of the World
used illegal eavesdropping to get stories,
listening in on the voicemails of celebrities, politicians and even crime victims.
The scandal led Murdoch to shut down
the 168-year-old tabloid and spurred
criminal investigations in which dozens
of journalists and officials have been
arrested.
The jury also found former News of the
World managing editor Stuart Kuttner not
guilty of phone hacking.
ACQUITTED
Three other defendants Brooks
husband Charles, her former secretary
Cheryl Carter and News International
security chief Mark Hanna were acquitted of perverting the course of justice by
attempting to hide evidence from police.
The defendants stood silently in the
dock as the forewoman of the 11-member
jury announced the verdicts.
Coulson showed no emotion as he was
declared guilty. He faces a maximum
sentence of two years in jail on the hacking conviction.
Brooks mouthed thank you after she
was cleared of all charges, and exchanged
a glance with Carter, standing next to her

in the dock. After the verdicts she and

her husband left court without speaking
to reporters.
The jury, which has been deliberating
for eight days, is still considering two
further charges of paying officials for
royal phone directories against Coulson
and former News of the World royal editor
Clive Goodman.
CONSPIRING
Brooks and Coulson, both 46, were accused of conspiring, along with Kuttner, to
hack phones between 2000 and 2006. She
edited the News of the World from 2000
to 2003 with Coulson as her deputy and,
the trial revealed, on-off lover. Coulson
then took over as editor, before becoming
Camerons communications chief.
All the defendants denied wrongdoing.
Prosecutors argued that senior editors
must have known that hacking was taking
place at the News of the World but only
Coulson was convicted by the jury.
The verdict puts pressure on Cameron,
who employed Coulson after two News

Twitter Causes Concern
A MAN described as a British jihadist

Minister and Home Secretary last month.
Currently in Iraq or Syria, and thought
to be fighting for ISIS, Abu Rashash
Britani directed his Twitter rant at Mr
Cameron and others on behalf of the
mujahideen.
The fear of how social media is influencing some young British nationals caused the account to be promptly
removed.
Home Office spokesman said: We do
not tolerate the existence of online terrorist
and extremist propaganda.
Last night Baroness Neville-Jones, 74,
former chairman of the Joint Intelligence
Committee, repeated the warning saying:
There are many potential threats to the
security of the UK but this is the most
serious to our homeland.
The latest Twitter attack came after the
British security service MI5 pledged to
beef up in monitoring of social media in an
effort to quell extremism. The government
believes that the radicalisation of Muslims
in Syria is the biggest threat to national
security in decades.
There are believed to be around 400
500 British nationals fighting for ISIS,
with others having been banned from leaving the UK to stop them getting training.

Transport for London (TfL) tweeted a picture of the eight-legged obstruction saying:

Travellers Advised To Apply Early

Delays In British
Passport Issuance/
Renewals
WITH a backlog of applications, the British Passport Office could now be faced
with a strike by workers.
Staff are protesting the job-cuts that they
say have played a big part into the hold up
of issuance of passports over the last number of months. And, now the busiest time
of the year just got worse, as the office has
received 300,000 more applications than
during the same period last year.
The Public and Commercial Services Union claims that offices are undermanned, and fighting a backlog of 500,000
passport applications.
The PCS said the agency was in crisis
because major job cuts and office closures had left it unable to handle demand.
MPs have been inundated with more than
500 complaints in recent weeks from
constituents about delays.
The Home Office website advises it
takes three weeks to renew a passport,
but travellers are complaining it is taking
twice as long. We have had a number of
calls here at the Union Jack offices on the
delays and difficulties in reaching help by
telephone.
In a letter to the Passport Offices chief
executive Paul Pugh, the PCS said the
problems were heightened by the loss of 315
staff and closure of 23 offices since 2010.
The layoffs were executed despite a
surplus being posted by the agency of
73m last year.
PCS chief Mark Serwotka told the Daily
Mail the union would consider industrial
action if the situation was not addressed
satisfactorily by the end of June. He added:

Google Street View Garage
Murder Joke Backfires

AN APOLOGY was necessary last month

from an Edinburgh garage owner who staged
a joke murder which was misunderstood
when spotted online.
The prankster spotted the Google Street
View camera vehicle in his area and staged
the scene that caused the controversy.
Police visited Dan Thompson, 56, following a complaint by a member of the
public who spotted the hoax online, reported
the BBC.
The mechanic had layed on the road
while his colleague stood over him with a
pick axe handle after spotting the Google
camera car from a distance. Thompson
said: By complete fluke, I saw the Google
car coming along the road but it had to loop
the block so I had one minute to rush back
inside the garage and set up the murder
scene. There are pictures of men on Google
flashing their bums but we thought we would
be more classy.
The image was not uploaded to Street
View for 12 months, by which time the pair
had forgotten the prank.
Thompson said: Two uniformed officers
came down to the garage to interview us.
They were treating it seriously at first I
was mortified because we didnt want to
waste police time,
Thompson added: We explained to the
police what we had done and they thought
it was hilarious.

Woman Experiences Meaning

Of The Eagle Has Landed

RELAXING in her living room, about to watch

the tennis on TV, a retired teacher got the
shock of her life last month when an eagle
flew into her living room.
The 18-inch tall Russian Steppe landed
on her cabinet and began knocking off ornaments with its 4ft wings. After causing a bit
of destruction at the house in Poole, Dorset,
the bird settled down and began pecking at
a bowl of potpourri.
Morrell and friend Karen Ruddlesden tried
to tempt the bird outside using pieces of ham
but ended up having to call the Wessex Bird
of Prey Rescue Centre.
After half an hour the eagle was finally
lured off its makeshift perch by rescuer Jon
Ball, who used a dead chick to tempt the bird
out of the house.
It was discovered later that the eagle was
a trained bird called Storm that wards off

The bird had been missing for three days
after breaking its tethers.

Annette Levy, 60, suffered for years with
crippling back pain triggered by osteoporosis.
It had caused her bones to fracture, leaving

But doctors at St Marys Hospital, Paddington, freed her from agony. A team lead

Game Of Thrones Puts

Northern Ireland On The Map

OPPONENTS of Scottish independence reacted with delight

last month after President Barack
Obama called for a robust, united
and effective Britain.
Obama was asked for his opinion during
a news conference with Prime Minister
David Cameron after a meeting of the G-7
group of nations in Brussels.
He said that while the decision was up
to Scottish voters, we obviously have
a deep interest in making sure that one
of the closest allies we will ever have
remains a strong, robust, united and effective partner.
American officials have largely refrained from expressing an opinion on
whether Scotland should become an independent nation and end its 300-year union
with England. Scottish voters will decide
whether to go it alone in a referendum on
September 18.
PARTNER
The United Kingdom has been an
extraordinary partner to us, Obama said.
From the outside at least, it looks like
things have worked pretty well.
The Better Together campaign, which
is urging Scots to reject independence,
quickly tweeted a variation on the famous
Obama Hope poster bearing Obamas
words under the heading Nope.
Lawmaker Douglas Alexander, the
Labour Partys Scottish affairs spokesman, said Obamas remarks were a clear
statement of support for the UK staying
together.
Scotlands pro-independence First
Minister Alex Salmond said Obama had
been right to say it was a decision for the
Scottish people, and quoted the presidents
famous phrase: Yes we can.
He added, diplomatically, that when
Scotland gained independence, the US
would have two allies instead of one.

Queen Unveils British

Government Plan
By Danica Kirka
THE QUEEN unveiled the governments
legislative agenda for its final year in
power last month on a day that showcases
Britain in grandest style offering a sumptuous display of pomp and power.
The main ceremonial event of Parliaments calendar is a moment of pride,
replete with ermine and silk and evoking
centuries of grandeur. Thousands of tourists lined the streets near the gothic spires
of the Houses of Parliament to watch the
parade of carriages in hopes of getting a
glimpse of the monarchs gloved hand.
The speech marks the final opportunity
for the Conservative-led government of
David Cameron to offer ideas ahead of the
election set for 2015. A package of measures was offered including laws making
it simpler to recall wayward lawmakers
and changes in pension plans.
The plans also included laws intended

to safeguard people acting as Good Samaritans, protecting them in the case of

lawsuits stemming from actions taken in
an emergency. A bill was also announced
to place a mandatory five-pence charge
(about eight cents) for supermarket bags.
Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister
Nick Clegg suggested the program was
unashamedly pro-work, pro-business and
pro-aspiration.
The monarch traveled in the resplendent new Diamond Jubilee State Coach.
The coach, which was made in Australia,
requires three grooms and six horses.
The coachs interior is lined in yellow
silk and is comprised of pieces donated by
historic sites and organizations. The seat
handrails, for example, are from the Royal
Yacht Britannia, while the window frames
and interior panels include material from
Canterbury Cathedral, 10 Downing Street,
and the Antarctic bases of Capt Scott and
Ernest Shackleton.

Euroskeptics Surge But Dont Win In UK Election

BRITAINS Conservatives hung onto victory in a special election closely watched
as a test of surging Euroskeptic sentiment.
Conservative candidate Robert Jenrick won the Newark parliamentary seat
by 7,400 votes down from the 16,000-vote majority the party won in 2010.
The United Kingdom Independence Party came second with 10,000 votes, up
from fifth place in 2010.
Some had predicted UKIP which wants Britain to leave the European Union
would do even better after it gained more than a quarter of British votes in
elections to the European Parliament last month.
Leader Nigel Farage said he had hoped the party would do better but for
UKIP its still a good nights work.
Conservatives hailed the win, since voters often punish governing parties in
mid-term elections.

and in the Titanic Studios in Belfast.

Since the pilot episode began filming in
2009, attracted by the local governments
financial incentives, the shows presence
has helped foster a film industry that is
catching the eye of other Hollywood productions. And Northern Ireland is taking
advantage of the attention by promoting
the filming locations as tourist destinations.
QUEEN
The latest and perhaps most illustrious visitor is the Queen, who toured
the studio sets last month. But thousands
have already been visiting from across
the globe.
The season four finale of Game of
Thrones one week last month was watched
by 7.09 million viewers in the United
States according to prime-time viewership
numbers complied by the Nielson Co. That
makes it HBOs most-watched program
since The Sopranos in 2007.
But the numbers are likely higher since
TV audience habits have changed since
2007 and Game of Thrones has fans globally who watch on local networks and via
DVD or streaming services.
For Northern Irelands tourism industry,
that represents a huge pool of potential
visitors. The province hopes to use the
shows popularity to increase the number
of tourists to over two million annually by
2016, from 1.8 million in 2013 more than
the regions population of just 1.8 million.
DEMAND
Coach operators have created Game
of Thrones tours, for which demand hit
a record as the show reached its season
finale this month.
They are using some of our most iconic
scenery in Game of Thrones which is excellent, said Arlene Foster, minister for
enterprise, trade and investment.
Beyond tourism, the direct employment
of local workers has been very important
for the local economy, she said.
Statistics cant do justice to the Game
of Thrones effect on Northern Irelands
economy, said economist Graham Brownlow, from Queens University Belfast. He
says the show is helping to improve the
provinces international image, which for
decades had become synonymous with political violence and economic stagnation.

Inspectors Criticise Schools

Over Islamist Plot

Newspaper reports based on leaks and
anonymous briefings saw each department
blame the other for failing to tackle the
roots of extremism.
Gove told lawmakers in the House of
Commons that he planned new rules to
ensure that all schools actively promote
British values.
But there may be little consensus on
what those values are or what constitutes
extremism.
The Muslim Council of Britain said it

It said in a statement that extremism
will not be confronted if Muslims and
their religious practices are considered
as, at best, contrary to the values of this
country, and at worst, seen as the swamp
that feeds extremism.

Criminal Law & Immigration

Law, What You Need To Know
AT ONE point, there were only a limit number
of crimes that could lead to a noncitizens deportation. And for even noncitizens who found
themselves in deportation proceedings; immigration judges had wide discretion to cancel deportations. However, during the past 90
years, the relationship between immigration
law and criminal law has become inseparably
intertwined, often resulting in harsh consequences for the noncitizen. Under current
law, many times a noncitizens immigration
fate is sealed during a criminal case. Further,
this truism applies to all noncitizens, including
lawful permanent residents, temporary nonimmigrant visa holders, and undocumented
individuals. Thus, if individuals who are not a
United States Citizen and find themselves in
criminal court, it is imperative they determine
the immigration consequences of the charge
before taking a plea.
Fortunately, the United States Supreme
Court recently held it is a criminal defense
attorneys obligation to advise a noncitizen
defendant if immigration ramifications will
result from a plea agreement. The Court recognized that deportation is often worse than
any criminal sanction and is often the most
important consideration in any criminal case
involving a noncitizen. While this decision
should be rightfully hailed for its protection
of often vulnerable noncitizens, the Court
left open the question of when immigration
consequences attach to a plea. For example,
in the concurrence, Justice Alito observed
that the most well-crafted plea could help a
noncitizen avoid being deportable. However,
if the foreign national leaves the country, the
same conviction (despite not being a deportable crime) could prevent the person from
being legally admitted back into the country.
Additionally, identifying which convictions

will carry immigration consequences is

neither easy nor intuitive. A person who is
convicted of walking into JC Pennies on
two separate occasions and taking clothes
without paying for them may be permanently
ineligible to remain in the country. However,
a person guilty of kidnaping may never be
placed in deportation proceedings or refused
entry into the United States.
Given the complex and highly fact specific
nature of immigration law, in most instances
a criminal attorney will be unable to determine which convictions carry immigration
consequences because terms like crime
involving moral turpitude are not defined
as a part of federal immigration statutes.
Further, fact-specific considerations like
the immigration status of the defendant (eg
permanent resident or undocumented) in
addition to the classification of the crime
may also that affect the analysis. Thus, it is
imperative noncitizens insist on obtaining an
accurate immigration consequences opinion,
that takes into consideration the noncitizens
unique situation before taking a plea- as any
misstep could result in permanent banishment from the country.
It is important for all noncitizens to stay
out of trouble, but if they find themselves in
criminal court, they should not compound the
situation be being unaware of the immigration
consequences stemming from the resolution
of the case.

BRITAIN is putting a price on vice.
Prostitution and the import, manufacture and consumption of illegal drugs like
crack cocaine and heroin will be included
in the official estimates of the countrys
economy, the national statistics agency
said last month.
Some of these activities, like prostitution, are legal in certain European Union
countries, and comparable figures are
needed. All member states need the same
standard because they are used to assess
a member states contribution to the EU
budget.
The new estimates also simply seek to
get a more realistic picture of the economy
warts and all. At the moment, the only
illegal activities included in Britains
GDP are estimates on alcohol and tobacco
smuggling.
EVOLVE
As economies develop and evolve, so
do the statistics we use to measure them,
said Joe Grice, the chief economic adviser
to the Office of National Statistics. These
improvements are going on across the
world and we are working with our partners in Europe and the wider world on the
same agenda.
Illegal drugs and prostitution are already
measured in Estonia, Austria, Slovenia,
Finland, Sweden and Norway, the ONS
said in a report.
In Britain, they would add approximately 10bn to gross domestic product in
2009, the ONS said. That remains a very
small portion of the overall GDP, which
now stands at 1.5 trillion.
Nonetheless, calculations may prove
challenging.
To measure prostitution, statisticians
will have to tabulate up the value of things
like brothel rental, condom sales, makeup
and the clothing of sex workers.
For illegal drugs, the ONS will examine
production and sales of crack cocaine,
powder cocaine, heroin, cannabis, ecstasy
and amphetamines. Growing drugs will be
classed as production, buying them for
home use, expenditure, while selling
them as income.

Drive A Car In
The UK Just
Dont Park It
THE FIRST parking meter was known as
Black Maria. She appeared in July 1935 on
the streets of Oklahoma. Britain had to wait
till June 1958 before its first one appeared,
fittingly enough outside the American
Embassy in Grosvenor Square, London.
Then you would pay
six bob (30p) an
hour, today its four
pounds.
Here in Ludlow,
we have meters and
if you opt for a half
hour, you will only be
charged 10p. The council will actually allow
you a free fifteen minutes if you are merely
stopping for a quick shop. This strikes me as
a further indication of the advanced level of
civilisation in Shropshire allowing someone
to have a little bit of something for nothing.
Other towns and cities in the country are
nowhere near as generous. Up to quite recently, you could park for free in most places
on a Sunday, until the authorities realised they
were denying themselves a lucrative source

of income. In Salisbury, by way of generosity

they offered a single flat rate of 1.70 for any
duration of parking, compared with 1.40 an
hour every other day of the week.
NON-TRANSFERABLE
I have often seen motorists leaving a
car park offering incoming drivers their
parking tickets should they have a decent
length of unexpired time on the ticket. This
is, of course, strictly against the law and
is expressly forbidden by the word, Nontransferable, prominently printed on the
ticket. But as the handing-over usually takes
place out of sight of parking wardens, it is
quite a common occurrence.
Then I came across Worcestershire which
has devised its own method of defeating
car park philanthropy. This authority has
large machines which instruct you to enter
the registration number of your car when
you purchase the ticket. What this means
in practice is that groups of people form
around ticket machines as people struggle
to understand the instructions: you do not
immediately realise if you are new to the
system the sequence in which things are to
be done. Do not put your money in before

Black Maria
you read the notice. The registration letters
have to be put in first, followed by the exact
payment before you press the green button
and get your ticket.
Thus largish groups gather around the
machines, increasingly irritated especially if
it is cold or wet. All to enable Worcestershire
County Council to prevent generous-spirited
motorists from giving away unexpired tickets.
UNLIKELY
You also notice that car park fees are graduated in unlikely sums. Salisbury charges 1.40
per hour or 1.70 per Sunday. This means
the motorist is obliged to carry around various denominations of coin because the one
thing you can be certain of is that no parking

machine anywhere will give you change. This

means that drivers habitually overpay. Official
figures show that UK councils derived 1.4bn
last year in parking charges, of which nearly
40m came from overpayments.
There is no excuse for this. I first visited
Portugal in the late 1990s, a time when it
was a pretty primitive place outside the cities.
Yet, in one isolated caf far off the beaten
track, I used a fag machine which gave me
change. If the Portuguese could give change
for cigarettes twenty years ago, why is it so
difficult for parking machines to do the same?
Theres another place which seems to run
on parking charges: NHS hospitals. MacMillan nurses are best known for their care of
terminally ill cancer patients but they also
keep an eye on car park charges in hospitals
since the patients often spend long periods
there for treatment. Their studies show that
the cost of parking ranges from 11.85 a day
in London down to 4.26 for the same period
in the North East, averaging out at 7.66. It is
little wonder that Scotland is enjoying its SNP
government since they abolished hospital
charges back in 2008, giving a saving of over
15m to patients and staff.
DECENCY
Back in Salisbury, parking wardens are
known as Ambassadors. This gives them
a title approximating to the importance of
their job though not necessarily reflecting
the honour in which they are held by their
fellow citizens. But if decency is associated
with such a grand title, it is not always seen
in the conduct. One Ambassador saw a
vehicle parked on the roadside in Wilton and
ticketed it pronto. Had he looked around him
he would have seen the driver attending to an
old lady who had collapsed on the pavement
as the driver went by. She stopped, attended

to the old lady and got a parking ticket for

her pains.
Councils have, however, belatedly been
trying to get up-to-date technologically by
allowing motorists to use a credit/debit card
to pay for their parking which at least saves
the bother of carting around a pocket full
of loose change. I quite like the Parkulator
which operates in several US cities where the
motorist purchases his own in-car meter that
uses money only when parked.
Ideally, I would favour a machine that
works out how long you can park for any
coin or combination of coins you can stick
in the slot. If, say, parking costs 1.40 an
hour and you only have a 50p and a 10p
coin, that would give you 6/14 of an hour, or
just under half an hour. How difficult is that
for a machine to do in these technologically
advanced days?
DESERTING
The end-product of councils making
fortunes out of parking is that shoppers
are increasingly deserting town centres,
favouring out-of-town malls where parking
is often but by no means always free.
It is impossible not to feel sorry for town
centre retailers.
I recently spent a weekend in Manchester whose hotels can be very pricey and
frequently full but theres one place at least
which bucks the trend. If you are looking
for somewhere reasonably priced that is
comfortable and immaculately cared for, why
not try Hello Hotel on the East Lancs road out
of town. The website is rather unfortunately
named www.hellohotel.co.uk but it really is
an excellent bet.
And overnight parking is free!

UK Education Revamp Leaves US Authors On The Shelf

BRITAINS education minister says he

literature-lovers dont believe him.
Michael Gove has outraged some readers and academics with his campaign to
put the basics and Britishness back
into schools.
Longtime American favorites including
John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men and
Harper Lees To Kill a Mockingbird are

Some educators fear that could lead to

Exam boards in England and Wales

writers including Haruki Murakami,
Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Ngozi

The purge of Americans and others is

THIS MONTH was the month when Coronation Street killed off Tina McIntyre. The killer
is immediately exposed to be Rob Donovan,
who had knowm about Tinas affair with Peter
Barlow, Robs brother in law. Rob goes round
to see Tina to tell her to back away from Peter
and leave him alone, but Tina wont give Rob
what he wants and refuses to let Peter go.
Further, she threatens to tell the police about
Rob and Tracy buying in stolen goods to sell
at Barlows Buys. Rob and Tina fight it out on
the balcony of Tinas flat above the builders
yard and in the commotion, Tina falls to the
cobbles below. Rob watches Tinas lifeless
body on the ground beneath him, dashes
down the stairs only to find that Tinas not
dead. She rises like a phoenix and tells Rob
what she thinks of him. I was born gobby!
she reminds him, but her words fail after Rob
spies a length of lead piping. He picks it up
and uses it to finish off Tina and he leaves
her dead body on the cobbles.
Later, Leanne and Kal find Tinas body
and shes rushed into intensive care where
Rita and David keep a vigil by her bedside
but she eventually dies. The cops come to
the cobbles to interview the likely suspects.
Rob and Tracy concoct an alibi for Rob so
that his whereabouts at the time of Tinas
death can be covered, although he hasnt yet
told Tracy why he needs the cover story. The
cops arrest Carla Connor who immediately
gets on the phone to her lawyer, a scary lady
called Pauline Mansell. If you were in trouble,
youd want Pauline Mansell on your side too.
Roy determines to support Carla as best as
he can, as he knows it would be what Hayley
would have wanted. And although hes unsure how to support and console, he does
the decent thing and offers to take Carla for
a drink. Youre better at this than you think,
Carla tells him.

In other news this month, Beth returns

from her trip to Latvia where she was going for a boob job. She tells her family she
couldnt go through with the operation and
gives the money she was going to spend on
her dcolletage to Chesney and Sinead to
invest in the kebab shop instead.
Maria makes a fool of herself this month
after shes outed as being the mystery text
sender whos been sending threatening texts
to Tyrone and pretending they were from
his ex, Kirsty. Marias found out by Fiz and
Tyrone and theyre furious with Maria and
want to press charges with the cops. Kirk
talks them out of it and explains that Marias
been having a hard time since Marcus left
her for Todd.
Over at the Victoria Court gym, Gail starts
a new job as the receptionist. Shes working
alongside personal trainer Kal, whos having
an affair with her daughter-in-law Leanne,
who should be making up with Gails son
Nick, so when Gail finds out what Leanne
and Kal are up to shes not best pleased. Of
course Nick finds out and he tells Leanne that
he wants a divorce.
And finally, the drama continues when
Anna confesses to Owen that she slept with
Pat Phelan. She says she had no choice because Pat Phelan offered to release Owen and
Gary from their debt if she spent an afternoon
in a sleazy hotel room with him instead. The
news is too much for Owen to take and he ups
and leaves to a new job in Scotland. But hell
be back, these two just have to work it out,
theyre too good together to be apart for long.

Couple Convicted Of Killing

Parents In Cash Scam
A HUSBAND and wife were convicted
last month of murdering the womans
parents, burying their bodies and collecting their pension checks for 15 years.
A jury at Nottingham Crown Court
found Susan and Christopher Edwards
guilty of shooting William and Patricia
Wycherly in May 1998.
Prosecutors said the debt-ridden
Edwards collected almost 250,000 by
pretending her parents were still alive.
In 2005 they sold the parents home in
the central England town of Mansfield,
with the bodies buried in the backyard.
Police Detective Chief Inspector Rob
Griffin said the couple, desperate for
money, decided an easy way to get their
hands on it was to kill their parents, and
thats what they did.
I think cold is the word, he said.
They used some of the money to
buy celebrity memorabilia, including
autographs of Gary Cooper and Frank
Sinatra.
They told friends and relatives that
the Wycherlys were traveling or had
moved away.

Rights Groups Say

UK Conducts Mass
Cyber-Snooping

By Jill Lawless
BRITAINS top counterterrorism official
says the countrys espionage rules allow
its electronic spy agency to routinely
intercept online communications between
Britons who use US-based platforms such
as Facebook, Twitter and Google.
A witness statement by Office for Security and Counterterrorism chief Charles Farr,
made public last month, said data sent on
those services is classed as external rather
than internal communications because the
companies are based outside Britain.
Britains Home Office confirmed the
document was genuine. It was written in
response to a legal action by civil liberties
groups who are seeking to curb cyberspying, and was published by the groups.
Britains electronic intelligence agency,
GCHQ, has broad powers to intercept communications outside the country, but needs
a warrant and suspicion of wrongdoing to
monitor Britons.
INTERCEPTED
In the document, Farr said some internal
communications are intercepted under the
external rules, but they cannot be read,
looked at or listened to except in strictly
limited circumstances. He said that was a
significant distinction.
Civil liberties organizations say the
rules are too vague and allow for mass
surveillance.
The security services consider that
theyre entitled to read, listen and analyze
all our communications on Facebook,
Google and other US-based platforms,
said James Welch, legal director of Liberty one of the groups involved in the
legal action. If there was any remaining
doubt that our snooping laws need a radical
overhaul there can be no longer.
GCHQ did not immediately respond to
a request for comment.
The rights groups launched their legal
action after leaks about cyber-snooping
from former US National Security Agency
contractor Edward Snowden. He revealed
details of a program called PRISM giving
the NSA access to Internet companies
customer data, and a British operation,
TEMPORA, that allows GCHQ to harvest
data from undersea cables.

Northern Irishman
Admits To Running
IRA Gun Range
Susan and Christopher Edwards
Police unearthed the bodies in October after being tipped off by a family
member that Christopher Edwards had
admitted burying the bodies.
The couple had moved to France
but were arrested at a London railway
station after emailing police to say they
wanted to surrender.
They pleaded not guilty to murder.
Susan Edwards testified that she had
been provoked into shooting her mother
after her mother killed her father.
But a jury did not believe the story.
The couple were to be sentenced
within weeks.

A NORTHERN Ireland man has pleaded

guilty to charges that he helped run an
Irish Republican Army firearms training
camp and plotted a possible attack on a
prison governor.
A Belfast judge said last month he
would postpone sentencing for 48-year-old
Sean Kelly until the trial of three others.
Like Kelly, the others were arrested in
March 2012 in a County Tyrone forest
near the IRA firing range. The three others
continue to deny involvement.
Lawyers for Kelly said he would plead
guilty to six of 10 charges against him, including possessing a rifle, ammunition and
other firearms; involvement in weapons
training; and gathering information for a
potential gun attack on a prison governor
at his home.
While most IRA members renounced
violence in 2005, several small breakaway
factions remain active.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

Dont Believe
Everything You Read!
IF I WAS to tell you there is a lot of alarmist
rubbish spoken about FATCA, would you
be surprised? Ive had a number of calls
recently from people who are very worried
about what theyve read about potential
penalties and so Ive decided to write this
article as the (very) small voice of reason.
Firstly, the IRS do have limited resources. They have a lot of power and its
very easy to demonize them, but like any
other organization they have to pick where
to place their resources and what their
priorities are to be. Since 2008, foreign
issues have been a major concern following a report on the unknown size of the
international tax-gap (difference between
what was declared and what should have
been declared).
Now subtlety is not the American way,
and so they tackled this problem with
a sledgehammer or maybe a nuclear
missile, rather than a more balanced approach. The filing of Foreign Bank Account
Reports was at an unrealistically low level,
very few professionals and even fewer
taxpayers knew about it and it seemed a
good place for the IRS to concentrate their
efforts. The idea was that almost all noncompliant taxpayers would be treated the
same, whether they had not declared one
account with $12,000 or twenty accounts
of five million each.
Adding to the complication has been
the fact that the non-declaration of overseas assets somehow became connected
with the funding of terrorism. This is
quite a leap, but in the increased security
awareness after 9/11 it was easy to make.
Having foreign accounts was seen as
un-American, which is not particularly
helpful to anyone!
The IRS have not had a major response
to the overseas disclosure programs
theyve initiated. The total for the 2009
and 2011 programs was approximately
30,000 taxpayers. Another approach was
needed and this is where FATCA comes
into play. Passed into law in 2010, but
only coming into effect now, I first wrote
about this back in December 2012. The
idea was to require the foreign banks and
financial companies to submit details of
their customers income, which would
get around the lack of information coming from the taxpayers themselves. Its
quite a good wheeze really! The foreign

financial industry ignored it for as long

as they could, and then raised merry hell
about how difficult it was going to be to
comply with it.
As happens all too often, the effect on
the individual customers, investors, policy
holders and US taxpayers was way down
the list of concerns! The fact that we (Im
in this too!) had been putting up with filing
Form 8938 since 2011 just means we
are made of sterner stuff than the foreign
banks and investment companies!
When the IRS is determining penalties on taxpayers, they keep a sense of
proportion. For people who have not filed
Foreign Bank Account Reports (FBARs),
the lowest level of penalty is a naughty
letter. This should be the penalty used
unless there are specific reasons for a
more severe penalty. These reasons could
include a huge amount being involved, a
previous naughty letter having been issued, the balance in the account having
been missed off a tax return or a taxpayer
in the financial industry who could be
expected to know about the requirements.
These are all pretty reasonable.
In my experience, the IRS are very
unlikely to charge a financial penalty to, for
example, someone with a UK account they
have had since before they came to the
US and into which a UK pension is paid.
The key is that the situation is remedied
when the taxpayer finds out about their
filing requirements.
The IRS wants to charge penalties
on the right cases, because longer-term
it does them no good to look unduly
vindictive. They would prefer taxpayers
to be compliant and in my experience
that is the main outcome theyre looking
for. Charging penalties will often mean
appointing an agent to the case this is
more expensive for them, so they have to
be sure it will be worth it.
So the moral of the story is, if a headline looks like a horror story and rather
unlikely it probably is! Concentrate on
the fictional side of the second word and
please dont fall victim to the imaginative
connotations of the first word!
Mary-Heather Styles is an Enrolled
Agent (tax specialist) in the US and has
specialised in tax in the US and the UK

making her incredibly old, this helps her

generally. She is based in Phoenix, and

Pound Jumps After Hint Of Interest Rate Hike

THE POUND jumped June 13 to reach its
highest level against the dollar in nearly
five years after the Bank of Englands
governor predicted an interest rate hike
might come sooner than expected.
The British currency rose to $1.6960
from $1.6830 the day before after Mark
Carney predicted an interest rate rise, The
last time the pound traded above $1.70 was
in August 2009.
Carney told an annual banquet of bankers that the Bank of England is not precommitted and would make its decisions
according to incoming economic data.

Further underscoring the recovery in

the British economy, credit rating agency
Standard & Poors lifted its outlook for
the countrys debt to stable from negative. That means there is less chance of a
downgrade in the coming years, something
the agency credited to improvements in
public finances and the pickup in growth.
Should the Bank of England lift interest rates this year, Britain would be way
ahead of the ECB, which is still cutting
rates and maybe even ahead of the US
Federal Reserve, said Stephen Lewis, chief
economist of Monument Securities.

Sadly we lost Martin The Plumber
Cowley, beloved husband of Lynda, brother
of Dale and Steven, son of June, who sadly
passed away on May 29, 2014. Martin was
an extremely popular member of the British

lovely smile, his pure zest for life and generous heart; he was everyones best friend.
He will be sadly missed by all. RIP Martin.
Martins mother posted this: To all the
lovely people I met on my stay in LA, Thank
you for the love and support you gave me
over the loss of my son Martin. True friends
are few and far between. I feel privileged to
know you all felt the loss of Martin as a personal friend as much as we the family have
lost a wonderful son and brother.
The untimely demise of Martin Cowley
following his battle with cancer, can only
serve to remind us all just how short life really is. He was loved, admired, and respected
by the local community, which was shown
by the huge turnout for his memorial. Our
condolences go out to the Cowley family.
We cant emphasize enough, while we
only write this column, we depend on you
all to let us know from anywhere in the US,
Brits you think we should know and recognize for services to the British and American

Brits is hugely rewarding, but we must hear
from you to make this happen. These Brits
dont have to be famous; they just have to
be good Brits.

Belfast Man Wrongly

Convicted Of IRA
Bombing Dies
GERRY CONLON, who was imprisoned
unjustly for an IRA bombing and inspired
an Oscar-nominated film, has died. His
family says he died June 21 at his Belfast
home following a long battle with cancer.
The 60-year-old Conlon was a central
figure in one of Britains greatest miscarriages of justice. He and three others were
convicted and sentenced to life for the
1974 bombing of a pub in Guildford, near
London, that killed five people.
Conlon protested his innocence, a position vindicated in 1989 when the so-called
Guildford Four were exonerated and freed.
By then his father Giuseppe, convicted for
an alleged lesser role in the bombing, had
already died behind bars.
Conlons autobiography, Proved Innocent, was the basis for 1993s In the Name
of the Father starring Daniel Day-Lewis
as Conlon.

ENGLAND WORLD CUP TEAM Following

Englands June tune-up matches in Miami,
one local expat had this letter published in
the Miami Herald:
Sir: As a Miami resident of 30 years and
a lifetime supporter of the English soccer
team, especially now that Beckham will be
bringing Major League Soccer to Miami, I
was excited to join fellow fans at Sun Life
Stadium yesterday to greet the English
team. As the competing team from Ecuador
excitedly greeted their fans and signed
autographs, the English players and their
manager, Roy Hodgson, simply left their
two coaches and entered the stadium without acknowledging the fans. The English
fans consisted of ex-pats, men, women and
children who had travelled from all over the
South East, other USA states and the World
and paid good money to stand in the rain for
two hours just to call-out the players names
and demonstrate their support. Despite our
surprise and disappointment at the teams
arrogant indifference, we waited to greet
them again when they left after the match.
This time there was even less recognition,
and team members stared at us out the
coach windows as they splashed past, as
though we were zombies standing out in the
rain. Good luck in Brazil, England. Without
your fans, you will need all the help you
can get. ROBERT HUBBARD. Theres an
English saying that Pride comes before
a fall. Just days later, England lost both
matches and were booted out of the World
Cup. PK.
n BRITISH BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Scottish spirits company Edrington Group
has just opened a Miami office. Doubtless
many of their famous brands brands of
Scotch Cutty Sark, the Macallan, Famous
Grouse will have glided down your British

throats at some stage. I have attended their

elegant and well-received Macallan tasting
events in Miami over the years, invited by
their brand ambassador over from Scotland.
Since Miami is such a huge Scotch drinkers
market (Latins love it more than Brits!) they
obviously decided an office here would pay
off. For company info phone Edrington on

FLORIDA GOOD NEWS! Floridas
economy outpaced the rest of the nation
in 2013, growing 2.2 percent compared to
the national average of 1.8 percent. Source:
the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. Additionally, Florida saw well above average
job growth in May 2013 adding 17,280
private-sector jobs, one of the largest
growth rates of any state.

Virgins history of doing things differently.

(Footnote: In February Sir Richard and Lady
Joan attended a charity event at Miamis
Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute where
doctors had performed a life-saving operation on the moguls Mrs. As appreciation
Branson helped raise $100,000 for the
institute and donated a $300,000 seat to
auction on his Virgin Galactic flight to outer
space. Our Grinning Giver steps up again!)

n BRANSON
WATCH MIAMI. A
frequent visitor to
Miami, since he
started Virgins Miami-London routes
27 years ago, Branson recently bought
a home overlooking
Sir Richard the cruise ships, and
Branson
last year opened an
office for Virgin Hotels. Now Englands beloved trailblazing
entrepreneur is mulling another venture:
Virgin Cruiselines. He has started seeking
investors to launch this cruiseline which
would be based in Miami and is also
scouting locations for Virgin hotels in South
Florida. His company issued this statement:
Virgin is exploring opportunities within the
leisure sector in Florida including hotels and
cruiselines. Both markets lend themselves
to creating a new proposition based on

n THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT in Florida: I get frequent US immigration enquiries

to my office for that use Legal Immigration
Services below on this page but also from
Americans wanting to move to the UK. Often
it is Florida expat Brits wanting advice on
how to repatriate with an American spouse
or an American professional hankering to
work in the UK. So be advised that UK Immigration and visa matters specifically are
handled by Martin Southey in the Miami
British Consulate General. Email your query
to martin.southey@fco.gov.uk On subject
line put: Immigration to the UK. Note: The
British-Consulate General in Miami does
not handle USA visa/immigration matters.

THEY LOVE OUR ACCENT CORNER.

Found on YouTube for Americans wanting
to sound like us arent we flattered just
search HOW TO FAKE A BRITISH ACCENT.
The lesson is by an enterprising Brit called
Philip Barker. He has compiled recordings
of how we speak from every part of the
UK, from a ripe Cornish accent to a rough
Cockney one. (FYI: My favourite accent
is Geordie least favourite is common
Cockney).
n

n QUEEN Tribute band called Dios

Salve a La Reina (God Save the Queen)
Internationally recognized by Rolling Stone

magazine in 2011 as the best band tribute

of all times. God Save The Queen performs
August 9 at the Fillmore Miami Beach where
they will masterfully recreate the iconic
concert, Queen Magic Tour 1986 Live at
Wembley. As good as the original ones
said Queen Tour Manager. (I find that a
tad implausible from he who worked and
experienced the original ones every night,
but high praise indeed for this Argentinian
tribute band PK).

Angelina Jolie In Queens Birthday Honours List

By Jill Lawless
ANGELINA JOLIE can add royal recognition to Hollywood stardom. The
Oscar-winning actress has been named an
honourary dame the
female version of a
knight by the Queen.
Jolie, a United Nations special envoy,
received the honour
last month for her work
combatting sexual violence in war zones.
Jolie, who won a supporting actress
Academy Award in 2000 for Girl, Interrupted, has spoken of scaling back her
movie roles to focus on humanitarian
work. She said that to receive an honour
related to foreign policy means a great deal
to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my
working life to.
Because she is not a British or Commonwealth citizen, Jolie wont be entitled
to use the title dame before her name.
Previous US recipients of honourary
knighthoods include director Steven Spielberg, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and
former President Ronald Reagan.
Jolie, who was in London to co-host an
international summit on sexual violence,
was among hundreds of people recognized
in the queens annual Birthday Honours
List for services to their community or
national life.
SPRINKLING
Most of the honours go to people who

are not in the limelight from soldiers and

civil servants to academics and entrepreneurs but there is always a sprinkling of
famous names.
Three-time Oscar winner Daniel DayLewis was made a knight for services to
drama and can now call himself Sir Daniel. The actor, who won Academy Awards
for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood and
Lincoln, said he was entirely amazed and
utterly delighted in equal measure.There
were damehoods for novelist Hilary
Mantel, author of the prize-winning Tudor
page-turners Wolf Hall and Bring Up the
Bodies, and for fashion designer Zandra
Rhodes.
Actress Maggie Smith, who plays the
imperious Dowager Countess of Grantham
on TVs Downton Abbey, was made a
Companion of Honour, an award limited
to 65 people of distinction.
Homeland star Damian Lewis was
named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE.
The British actor said he was very
surprised but very happy with the honour.
UN-BRITISH
I decided to do the very un-British
thing of accepting the compliment,
Lewis said.
OBEs also went to Beatles expert and
author Hunter Davies, musician Talvin
Singh, and John Simpson, longtime editor
of the Oxford English Dictionary.
In the field of science, there was a
knighthood for physicist Thomas Kibble,

whose work contributed to the discovery

of the Higgs boson the so-called God
particle.
Among those honoured for charity work
was the late Stephen Sutton, a teenager
who raised 4m while battling terminal
cancer. Sutton, who died in May at age
19, was named a Member of the Order of
the British Empire, or MBE.
Sylvia Lancaster, who founded a campaign against hate crime after her daughter,
Sophie, was attacked and killed by a gang
of youths in 2007 because of her Goth
appearance, received an OBE.
Recipients covered a wide range of
achievements, from confectioner Chantal
Coady, honoured for services to chocolate
making, to civil service debt manager
Barry Cox for services to debt and

Association. He was recognized for services to people with restricted growth and

COMMITTEES
Britains honours are bestowed by the
monarch, but recipients are selected by
committees of civil servants from nominations made by the government and the
public.
Wales rugby coach Warren Gatland
and British golfer Laura Davies were
among players and officials who were
also honoured.
Former All Blacks hooker Gatland has
coached Wales since 2007, and was made
an Officer of the Order of the British Em-

pire. Hes led Wales to two Six Nations

Grand Slams, and coached the British and
Irish Lions to a series victory in Australia
last year.
Davies, the most successful British
female golfer with four major wins, was
knighted and made a Dame.
Dario Franchitti, a Scot, was made a
Member of the Order of the British Empire.
He was forced to retire in November because of a spinal injury in a race crash the
month before. That ended a career in which

he won the IndyCar Series four times

and the Indianapolis 500 three times.
Also receiving an MBE was British
Olympic skeleton gold medalist Lizzy
Yarnold.
In descending order, the honours are
knighthoods; Commander of the Order

Tests Confirm Painting Is

Rembrandt Self-Portrait

SCIENTIFIC tests have confirmed that

a painting donated to Britains National
Trust by a wealthy supporter is a Rembrandt self-portrait worth tens of millions
of pounds.
The portrait of the artist, wearing a cap
with a white feather, was long thought to
be the work of one of Rembrandts pupils
and was credited as in the style of the
17th-century Dutch master.
But last year a Rembrandt expert declared it genuine, and the National Trust
said last month that tests on the paint, the
signature and the wooden panel all confirm
its authenticity.
The painting was given to the heritage
body in 2010 and hangs in Buckland
Abbey in southwest England, the former
home of 16th-century seafarer Francis
Drake.
It went on display at the abbey last
month.

The Fallen Angel

by Daniel Silva

WHAT DO the Pope, an Israeli secret serviceman, the Hezbollah, Palestine, an Antiquities
expert, money, and a death all have in common? Youll find out this and much, much
more in this fascinating book.
Gabriel Allon has retired (or so he thinks)
from working for Israeli intelligence and has
returned to his love the restoration of classic paintings currently Caravaggios The
Deposition of Christ. He is working on a piece
at the Vatican when his friend Monsignor
Luigi Donati the Popes private secretary
comes to him and asks him to look at a
body on the floor of St Peters Basilica. It is
a woman who was hired to do research into
the Vaticans museum collection to verify that
all of the pieces were gained by legitimate
means. It is speculated
that Claudia Andreatti has
committed suicide from
the very top but Gabriel
and Donati believe differently. Although Gabriel
has retired he is asked
to do the investigation.
The Vatican doesnt need
another scandal. Gabriel
reluctantly agrees and you are then carried off
to the depths of the Vatican, to the glamour
of St Moritz, to Jerusalem and many stops
in between.
Claudia, it seems, discovers that some
of the antiques are not quite as innocently
acquired as they should have been and as
she started to dig she found out more than
certain people thought she should. Others get
killed along the way as they cross the wrong
people and it seems, at times, that the trail
has gone dead but Gabriel is not one to give
up and he keeps digging.
Gabriel has to tread lightly as most of the
Police he comes in contact with know of his
interesting past and really dont want him
around digging up trouble. He has several
close calls but the final and biggest challenge
is when the Pope himself asks him to be his
personal bodyguard once again (he had done
it many, many years ago) as he goes to Israel
and Palestine at Easter for a 10-day tour and
hopes to get the two sides speaking again.
Gabriel discovers there is a plan in place that
will probably start World War III if it happens.
Convincing all those that are threatened to
take him and his team seriously isnt easy.
We are reminded of the Holocaust and the
pain that caused many, current day political
issues (as this book takes place in current
day) and we learn much about the history
on all sides of many issues. It is a wonderful read Im really glad I stumbled upon it
and will certainly be picking up more of his
books to read.
Although the book is fiction Silva has
done extensive research into the world of
antiquities, the Church and the secret service.
He has many friends who have helped him
along the way and the history in the book is
absolutely amazing. Take a break and read
this one its an easy read and youll be
sucked in from the very beginning.

Unemployment Drops As
Economy Strengthens
BRITAINS unemployment rate is falling sharply as the economy continues to
strengthen, but wage growth continues
to lag, official figures showed last month.
The Office for National Statistics said
the jobless rate dropped to 6.6 percent
in the three months ending in April
from 7.2 percent in the period ending
in January.
Some 72.9 percent of the population
aged 16 to 64 was working, still just
slightly less than before the 2008-2009
economic downturn brought on by
the global financial crisis. There were
780,000 more people working than a
year earlier.

Nadal & Sharapova Are French

Champions

The red clay of the Roland Garros stadium

that hosted the French Open, May 25-June

what we already knew, that this match will
be one of the premier sporting events in 2014

England Go Down To New

Zealand

UNSURPRISINGLY, the home nations experienced mixed fortunes in their opening

summer tour matches.
England had the toughest programme,
taking on the World Champions, New
Zealand, in their own backyard. Our lads
were certainly not disgraced but on these
showings they will not be favourites to win
next years World Cup on home soil.
In the First Test in Auckland, it took a
late try from Conrad Smith to inflict a 20-15
defeat on England, the All Blacks setting
a new international record of 31 games
without defeat. England missing several
key players still at home on Premiership
duty could count themselves unlucky in
that for the crucial last ten minutes they
were down to 14 men. It was a sheer lack
of numbers that enabled Smith to scrape
over the line.
Thus England looked to the Second Test
with some grounds for optimism. England
racked up an early ten point lead with a
penalty from Owen Farrell and a surging
run from Marlon Yarde which led to another
converted try. The difference in class at
this level can be measured in fractions of
inches when the game is played at high
intensity and pace. England always seemed
to be stretching for that little bit extra which
comes easily to All Blacks, slight misjudgements which cancel key opportunities. This
was most clear in the mid-section of the
match in which the home side came from
6-13 behind with three second-half tries
and a penalty to lead 28-13.
Gallant England scored two late tries
to narrow the gap but predictably the All
Blacks extra class secured a positive
result. The All Blacks clinched the threematch series with a convincing victory. The
28-27 scoreline flatters England who were

Wales have never beaten South Africa

south of the equator and sadly it seems
unlikely to happen this year either. They had
tasted some success on their tour with a
convincing 34-12 win over Eastern Province. But Test rugby is a different animal.
They took an early lead with a drop goal
from Dan Biggan but thereafter the South
Africans more or less controlled the game
with the same sort of ease that the All
Blacks display. It is that added pace and
incisive running that differentiates southern
hemisphere sides from their European
counterparts. Just occasionally Wales
disconcerted the opposition, most notably
with a brilliant long-distance solo try from
Alex Cuthbert.
They also did remarkably well at the
death when wave after wave of Springbok
attacks a few paces from the Welsh line
were held. But in truth, the Dragonhood
never really looked anywhere near good
enough to register a second all-time win,
finally succumbing 16-38.

Scotland And Ireland Enjoy

Visits To America

Scotland embarked upon a somewhat

rambling tour of the New World. They took
on the USA in the heat of Houston and ran
out quite comfortable 24-6 victors. Their
new coach, Vern Cotter, will have been
pleased with the result but not with its
manner. Scotland were simply too sloppy.
Canada offered the Scots rather tougher
opposition in Toronto where the summer
warmth was considerably less oppressive.
This was a far more competitive match and
it took a late penalty from Greig Laidlaw to
secure the honours for the Scots at 19-17.
The most comfortable of the home
nations was Ireland. They won a first-ever
series against Argentina with a couple of
hard-fought yet clear-cut victories. Among
the new faces on view for the Irish is Rodney Ah You, a New Zealander by birth who
plays at prop. He has the sort of name that
demands a double-take.

Hard Hitting Froch Retains Title,

McDonnell Claims WBA Crown

Carl Froch landed a humdinger of a

punch at Wembley Stadium, May 31, where
a record British boxing crowd of 80,000
plus, witnessed George Groves hit the deck
in the eighth round, and remain motionless
for a moment before the ref stopped the
bout. The rematch between the IBF & WBA
super-middleweight champion from Nottingham (33-2) and London George (19-2)
who entered the stadium atop a London
bus proved cagey until the fifth round when
the skilled violence ratcheted up and Froch
edged into a points lead by the time of the
knockout. Groves complained hed dropped
his game plan for one second, and Froch had
taken immediate advantage. On the under
card, Jamie McDonnell (24-2) claimed the
WBA bantamweight crown after stopping
Thailands Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat (523) in the tenth round. Former 2008 Olympic
champion James DeGale (19-1) finished off
Sacramentos Brandon Gonzales (18-1-1)
in four rounds and 2012 Olympic champion
Anthony Joshua, overcame Matt Legg to
push his record to 6-0.
Paul Butler retained his unbeaten record
to take the IBF bantamweight crown off
Stuart Hall (16-3-2) of Darlington, at the
Metro-Radio-Arena in Newcastle, June 4.
A split decision pushes Butler from Chester
to 16 and 0 Birmingham born, Blackpool
raised, and now a Manchester resident,
light-middleweight Brian Rose, put on a
brave performance at the Barclays Centre
in Brooklyn, New York, June 14, attempting
to dethrone Demetrius Andrade of his WBO
crown. Rose (24-2-1) came in to the ring
after eleven consecutive victories, but the
unbeaten Providence, Rhode Island champion (34-0-1) had Rose down twice in the
first three rounds, and brought the contest
to an end in the seventh.
The Brownlee brother triathletes, Alistair
and Jonny, usually put in a good performance
at the London Triathlon at the World ITU
series, but at the May 31 race, Spaniard
Mario Mola, took the honours with Olympic
champion Alistair, back in fourth place
Welsh cyclist Geraint Thomas, won the
five day Tour of Bavaria, which concluded
in Nuremburg.

Rugby Union Results

Rugby union finally ended its 2013-14

season with the two big European games.
French side Toulon, won the Heineken Cup
final and became the European club champions at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, beating the Saracens 23-6. Bath won the other
European trophy, the Amlin Challenge Cup at
Cardiff Arms Park, overcoming Northampton
30-16. The Barbarians beat England at
Twickenham 39-29, while Northampton won
the Aviva Premiership Final 24-20 over the
Saracens. All games concluded late May.
A series of International fixtures filled the
calendar last month. Scotland beat the US
Bald-eagles at Houston, 24-6. Ireland won
29-17 against Argentina at Resistencia, New
Zealand beat England 20-15, and Australia
marked France down 50-23. More games
June 14. New Zealand edged England 28-27
at Dunedin, South Africa took Wales 38-16,
while Scotland won 19-17, in Toronto over
the Canadians. Australia topped France 6-0,
and Ireland beat Argentina 23-17.

World Cup-Warm-Ups

85,000 Wembley fans gave a roaring

sent off for Englands trip to Brazil, May 26,
where a 3-0 win over Peru gave coach Roy
Hodgson the positive result he was looking
for. Goals by Daniel Sturridge, Gary Cayhill
and Phil Jagielka provided the pleasure. In
Miami for two games, June 4 and 7, a
crowd of 21,000 plus at the Sunlife Stadium
watched England and Ecuador tie. Both sides
went down to ten men in the 78th minute,
as Manchester Utds Antonio Valencia and
Liverpools Raheem Sterling got in to a fracas and both received their marching orders.
Ecuador took the lead in the eighth minute,
while Wayne Rooney notched his 39th goal
for the Three Lions some twenty minutes
later. Ricky Lambert got one six minutes after
the break, and Michael Arroyo leveled it in the
70th minute. The second game four days later
against Honduras witnessed a very physical
encounter where the ref halted the game after
23 minutes, for 30 minutes, when a vicious
thunderstorm topped the arena. 45,000 plus
turned up, where Brayan Beckeles was sent
off in the 66th minute. England could not find

the net against ten men however, and the

encounter ended 0-0.
Scotland was seconds from victory over
Nigeria at Craven Cottage, when Nwofer put
in a late equalizer for a 2-2 draw. Charlie
Mulgrew put Gordon Strachans men in
front in the tenth minute, then Uchebo leveled it minutes from the break. Egwuekwe
found his own net in 52nd minute, and the
Scots secured an advantage they would not
keep Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey
were missing for Wales, at a friendly at
Amsterdam, where the Dutch won 2-0
Northern Ireland had won only one of their
last 20 games, and they did not improve their
record at Montevideo, when the only goal of
the game gave Uruguay the victory. A couple
days later in Chile, they went down 2-0.
American soccer reverberated to the news
that Landon Donovan had not made Jurgen
Klinnsmans final cut, but the US carved out
victories prior to their departure to Brazil. At
Candlestick Park, the USA beat Aberbaijan
2-0 courtesy of Mix Diskerud and Aron
Johannsson. The US won in New Jersey,
with nettings by Fabian Johnson and Clint
Dempsey, who survived a Turkish penalty
in the closing minutes, where Selcuk Inan
brought the final score to 2-1. Jozy Altidore
regained his shooting boots with a brace
against Nigeria in Jacksonville, Florida, but
the Africans scored four minutes from time
with a penalty. The scoreline 2-1.

Late Cricket

Stuart Broad became the first English

bowler to take two hat-tricks, which he accomplished during Sri Lankas first innings
at Headingley in the second Test match. Sri
Lanka would clinch victory by 100 runs with
just two balls of the match left. Sri Lanka 257
and 457 (Angelo Mathews 160). England
365 (Sam Robson 127) and 249 (Moeen Ali
108). Sri Lanka win the short test series 1-0
Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire share the
lead at the top of the County Championship
mid-June, both having accumulated 118pts
from nine games. Hampshire lead Division
Two with 139pts, with Worcestershire, just
behind on 138pts The West Indies beat
the Kiwis by 10 wickets in their second and
final Test at Port of Spain, Trinidad, to tie
the short series 1-1. New Zealand 221 and
331. West Indies 460 (Kraigg Braithwaite
129, Darren Bravo 109) and 95-0 at close.

Late Sport

The Mercedes Formula One team won

the Monaco Grand Prix, with Nico Rosberg
first and Lewis Hamilton second. The third
man, Red Bulls Daniel Ricciardo, took the
Canadian Grand Prix, June 8, breaking the six
time consecutive winning streak of Rosberg
and Hamilton. Rosberg was second, while
Hamilton did not finish. Williams Felipe
Massa, took the pole at the Austrian Grand
Prix, June 22, the eighth race in the series,
but by the 40th lap Nico Rosberg was in
front and went on to win. Team-mate Lewis
Hamilton starting ninth of the grid finished
second. Rosberg leads the drivers table with
165pts, with Hamilton on 136pts
Britains Heather Watson got a walkover
to the semi-finals of the Aegon International at
Eastbourne, when 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, pulled out with a hamstring
injury. She became the first Briton to reach
the last four since 1982, but went out to the
19-year-old American, Madison Keys, who
went on to win her first big tournament Finlands Mikko llonen won the Irish open at Fola
Island, Cork, June 22, where a 13-under par
gave him a one stroke victory. Englishmen
Matthew Baldwin and Danny Willett (hole
in one on third round) finished two behind.
Rory McIIroy did not survive the cut More
international rugby union matches June 2021. New Zealand captured the third and final
Test at Hamilton beating England 36-13, thus
winning the series 3-0. Wales were unlucky
at Nelspruit, and were beaten in the closing
minutes 31-30 by South Africa. Australia
beat France 39-13, while Scotland won in
South America, topping Argentina 21-19.

Bradley Wiggins
Set To Miss
Tour de France
By Samuel Petrequin
FORMER Tour de France winner Bradley
Wiggins expects to miss this years race,
complaining that his team is focusing on
his bitter rival and defending champion
Chris Froomes title defense.
Wiggins, who became the first British
rider to win cyclings showpiece two years
ago, was not selected to compete with
Froome at the Criterium du Dauphine, the
tuneup event for the Tour. It was a clear
indication that he was unlikely to line up
in Yorkshire on July 5 for the Tours start
in England.
Speaking to the BBC Breakfast program
last month, the 34-year-old multiple Olympic gold medallist voiced his disappointment at being left out by Team Sky despite
a recent surge in form and his victory at the
Tour of California last month.
I am gutted, Wiggins said. I feel I am
in the form I was two years ago. Now if I
want to go to the Tour again, the reality is
that I might have to go elsewhere. I also
understand that cycling is a team sport and
it is all about Team Sky winning and Chris
is defending champion.
Wiggins contract with Sky expires at
the end of the season.
COMPETING
Having missed the Tour again this
year, I wouldnt like to leave it there,
said the former pursuit specialist, who
could now turn his focus on competing on
the track at the Commonwealth Games in
Glasgow, Scotland, in August. Id love to
go back at some point so there is the chance
that I would go back to the Tour next year.
Froome struggled at last months Tour
at the Dauphine while Wiggins was forced
to drop out of the Tour de Suisse with a
knee injury.
Froome, will be surrounded by a team
made of strong climbers in the mountainous event, including last years Dauphine
runner-up Richie Porte, Vasil Kiryienka,
David Lopez, Mikel Nieve, Danny Pate,
Geraint Thomas and Xabier Zandio.
Froome and Wiggins have endured
a frosty relationship over the past few
years. Tensions first arose during the 2012
Tour, with Froome sometimes looking
the stronger rider in the climbs but being
ordered by the team to support Wiggins
rather than attack.
Last year, after suggesting he would
seek to defend his title and upset Skys
plans of making Froome its leader, Wiggins missed the race because of health
issues and Froome easily won the 100th
edition of the race.
Froome recently said his relationship
with Wiggins was back to normal, and
Wiggins was adamant he would support
his younger teammate if he was selected.

Wiggins Headlines England

Cycling Team For Glasgow
FORMER Tour de France champion and
four-time Olympic gold medalist Bradley
Wiggins headlines Englands cycling team
for the Commonwealth Games.
Wiggins, who won the 2012 Tour, was
named last month as part of Englands
road race team for the games in Glasgow,
Scotland.
Wiggins, who is unlikely to compete in
this summers Tour, has indicated he could
also return to the track.
The English team features seven other
Olympic champions: Laura Trott, Joanna
Rowsell, Dani King, Ed Clancy, Steven
Burke, Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes.
The Commonwealth Games take place
from July 23-August 3.

Joe Cole Signs Free Transfer

With Aston Villa

FORMER England midfielder Joe Cole signed a

two-year deal with Aston
Villa last month, giving
him a chance to prolong
his career with another
Premier League club.
The 32-year-old Cole
joined the Birmingham club on a free transfer
after being released by West Ham at the end
of the season.

Everton Manager Martinez

Signs New Five-Year Contract

EVERTON rewarded Roberto Martinez for an

impressive first season as manager with a
new five-year contract last month.
Martinez, who took over from David Moyes
a year ago on a four-year deal, led Everton
to fifth in the English Premier League with a
record points tally. Everton will play in Europe
next season for the first time since 2010, in
the Europa League.
The 40-year-old Martinez began managing at Swansea, then Wigan, where he won
the FA Cup last year. Hes tied to Everton
until 2019.

Sami Hyypia Takes Charge Of

Second-Tier Brighton

FORMER Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia

says the ambition of English second-tier club
Brighton was what attracted him to apply for
the managers job.
Hyppia, who played more than 100 internationals for Finland, was introduced as
the new coach last month, on a three-year
contract.
The 40-year-old Hyypia was fired as
manager of Bayer Leverkusen in April after
winning only three games in 12, but managed
the team in the Champions League.

Pantillimon Leaves Man City

For Sunderland

SUNDERLAND says it has signed goalkeeper

Costel Pantillimon for four years on a free
transfer.
The 27-year-old Pantillimon, who has
played 18 times for Romania, will officially
join Sunderland on July 1 after his contract
expires at English champion Manchester City.
He made 29 appearances for City in three
years and replaced Joe Hart for two months
in the 2013-14 season when Englands firstchoice goalkeeper had a loss of form.

Ronald Koeman Hired As

Southampton Manager

SOUTHAMPTON has hired former Dutch defender Ronald Koeman as its new manager.
The 51-year-old Koeman says on Twitter
that he has just signed at the great English
club and is very much looking forward to
the new season.
Koeman signed a three-year deal at the
Premier League club last month. His brother,
Erwin, has also joined Southampton as assistant first-team manager.

Moyes Tempted By Offers

After United Firing

FORMER Manchester United manager David

Moyes says he is being tempted by one or
two very good offers to return to football
coaching, just a few months after being fired
by the Premier League giants.
Writing in British newspaper The Sunday
Times in his first media comments since his
departure, Moyes says another possibility is
that I may choose to have a break and enjoy
watching and observing football throughout
the world. What I do know for sure is that I

have moved on.

The Scot says it could well be that gone
are the days of long-term planning ... It was
unfortunate I wasnt given more time to
succeed.

David Beckham Hints At

Possible Comeback

DAVID BECKHAM says he might come out of

retirement and play soccer again.
The 39-year-old former England captain
retired last year after a final stint at Paris
Saint-Germain. He says in a BBC documentary he had a tough time after he stopped
playing.
Beckham is trying to launch a Major
League Soccer team and build a stadium in
Miami. He says theres never been a playerowner, but maybe?

McDermott Fired By Fallen

English Power Leeds

FALLEN English power

Leeds United has fired
manager Brian McDermott
in the wake of a takeover
of the second-tier English
club by Italian businessman Massimo Cellino.
McDermott left the club
last month, 13 months into a three-year contract, with Cellino saying the coach had been
very understanding of my wish to implement
a new structure.
Leeds finished 15th in the 24-team League
Championship at the end of a difficult season
marred by takeover speculation. The team,
which hasnt been in the Premier League
since 2004, won the English top-flight title
in 1992 and reached the Champions League
semifinals in 2001 before falling into financial
difficulties.

Sheringham Joins West Ham

As Attacking Coach

WEST HAM manager Sam Allardyce has

responded to demands to make his team
more entertaining by hiring former England
forward Teddy Sheringham as the clubs new
attacking coach.
Sheringham, who played for West Ham for
three years toward the end of his long career,
will join the London team on a part-time basis
for the start of preseason. He also played for
Manchester United and Tottenham in his 25year career, and won 51 caps for England.
Allardyce has already signed Argentine
striker Mauro Zarate from Velez Sarsfield in
this offseason.

Poyet Extends Deal At

Sunderland Thru 2016

SUNDERLAND manager Gus Poyet has

signed a new contract with the Premier
League club, keeping the former Uruguay international at the Stadium of Light until 2016.
Poyet enhanced his burgeoning reputation
at managerial level by guiding Sunderland to
safety last season with four wins from its
last five games and also to the League Cup
final, where the team lost to Manchester City.
The 46-year-old Poyet said: I am delighted to extend my stay with Sunderland after
an unbelievable season and our famous great
escape the prospect of creating more of
those memories is one which excites me.

Stoke Signs Steve Sidwell

To Two-Year Deal

MIDFIELDER Steve Sidwell has signed a

two-year deal with Premier League club Stoke
after being released by Fulham.
He will join his new side in July when his
current contract expires.
Sidwell started his career with Arsenal
and played with different clubs before joining
Chelsea in 2007. He spent one season at
Stamford Bridge, then moved to Aston Villa
before switching to Fulham in 2011.

Three And Out

For England
Continued from page 16
Chamberlin, et al, but against Uruguay
and Italy defensive glitches and sloppy
work in the attacking third were too much
to overcome.
Thus did England stumble out of the
tournament after just two matches, and
the humiliation of that failure can be
tempered by the fact that the same fate
befell defending champion Spain. Their
glorious era consecutive European
Championships sandwiched around the
2010 World Cup title ended ignominiously. A rampant Dutch team thrashed the
Spaniards, 5-1, in a rematch of the bitter
final they played four years ago, and a
subsequent 2-0 loss to Chile ended their
quest to repeat.
Spain exited after defeating Australia,
3-0, and all-time leading scorer David
Villa who before the tournament
had announced his retirement from the
national team signed off by steering a
clever back-heel into the net for his 59th
international goal. Villa is the first player
signed by the new Major League Soccer
expansion team, New York City FC,
which comes into the league next year.
Another player linked to MLS captained England in its group finale against
Costa Rica, and what becomes of the
national team as Frank Lampard and others ride off into the sunset will dominate
discussions for the next few months.
Lampard had been in discussions with
the Los Angeles Galaxy last year before
re-signing with Chelsea, with which hes
parted ways. He could be bound for New
York City FC as well.
I dont know whether I will or not,
Lampard told BBC Radio regarding his
retirement from England. I am going
to get home and make a decision at that
point because I have my own (club) future
to sort out as well.
This is not the time and place to make
the decision. Sometimes when you are
away for a month you dont always come
up with the right judgment.
Hours after a second 2-1 loss had eliminated manager Roy Hodgsons team, the
FA announced he would stay on. His contract runs through the 2016 Euros. There
are some positives, said chairman Greg
Dyke to Sky Sports. Weve got some
young players that have been blooded and
got into tournament football here.
I think everybody felt we played
really well and narrowly lost in the first
game [to Italy] and then the second game
couldve gone either way. We were not
humiliated or anything like that.
While Spain was being humiliated,
the Netherlands, Colombia, and France
romped to impressive group victories,
Brazil endured a tie with Mexico to top
Group A, and Argentina, Germany, and
Belgium were impressive at times yet
shaky occasionally.
The USA scored a late winner from
substitute defender John Brooks, one of
five German-based players on the squad,
to beat Ghana, 2-1, in its opener and atone
for losses to the same country by the same
score in the last two World Cups. The
second group game will go down as one
of the most dramatic in the teams long
history.
Portugal, 3-2 losers to the USA at the
2002 World Cup in which the Americans
reached the quarterfinals, took a 1-0 lead
in the fifth minute on a defensive miscue.
The USA rallied with a scintillating strike
by Jermaine Jones and a bundled goal
by Clint Dempsey and led, 2-1, deep
into stoppage time. They were within
seconds of a spot in the second round
before an otherwise subdued Cristiano
Ronaldo swerved a superb cross that
substitute V
arela headed powerfully into
the net. The 2-2 tie left both the USA and
Germany, which tied Ghana by the same
score, needing a point out of their meeting
in the group finale to advance.

Gerrard To Spend Summer

Considering England Future

ENGLAND captain Steven Gerrard will spend

the summer deciding whether to retire from
international football after the teams early
World Cup elimination.
Its not right to make a decision now or
in a week, the 34-year-old said just before
England met Costa Rica in their last game.
Gerrard has made 113 international appearances, including the 2-1 losses to Italy
and Uruguay in Brazil, which led to Roy Hodgsons side failing to qualify for the second
round at the World Cup. Gerrard struggled
to exert his usual influence in the center in
Brazil, noticeably fading against Uruguay and
inadvertently flicking the ball on for Liverpool
teammate Luis Suarez to score the winner.

FORMER England captain Andrew

Flintoff has come out of retirement to
play for Lancashire in the domestic T20
Blast competition.
The 36-year-old allrounder, who
played 79 tests and 141 one-day internationals for England, retired in 2010
after a string of injuries but has been
training with Lancashire, his old club,
in recent months.
Flintoff tells the BBC when Im
bowling it still hurts a bit, but Im loving
running into bowl and if I can take that
into a game I might be quite dangerous.
Flintoff was a star of the England
team that won the Ashes in 2005. He was
captain when England was whitewashed
in Australia in the 2006-07 series but
was a member of the side that regained
the urn in 2009.

NORTHAMPTON became English rugby

champion for the first time in dramatic circumstances on Saturday, beating Saracens
24-20 in the Premiership final after scoring a try in added-on time in extra time at
Twickenham.
A try by replacement prop Alex Waller
in the last passage of play in the match was
only confirmed after a long review by the
television match official.
Northamptons England center Luther
Burrell says to go to the death like that,
Im just speechless.
Saracens, who topped the regularseason standings, finish the season emptyhanded after also losing the European Cup
final to Toulon in Cardiff last month.
Extra time was required for the first time
in 14 Premiership finals, with the score at
14-14 after 80 minutes following an unconverted try by Saracens center Marcelo
Bosch in the 73rd minute.

Emburey Has Skin Cancer
FORMER England international John
Emburey has undergone surgery after being diagnosed with skin cancer.

147 wickets in 64 tests, says his condition isnt the most aggressive form or
life-threatening and can be eliminated
through surgery.

Pietersen Receives Apology

From English Cricket
THE ENGLAND and Wales Cricket Board
has apologized to Kevin Pietersen after its
head criticized the batsmans attitude in the
winter Ashes collapse against Australia.
ECB managing director Paul Downton
said the 33-year-old Pietersen appeared
disinterested and distracted in the fifth
test of the 5-0 series defeat, and claimed in
the radio interview that he was unable to
find anyone within the England setup who
wanted the player to remain in the team.
Pietersen denied the allegations, and
last month the ECB said Paul Downton
and the ECB both apologize to Kevin Pietersen for those comments made that were
in breach of the settlement agreement
made with the batsman when his England
contract was terminated earlier this year.
Both sides were bound by confidentiality provisions.

Olympic long jump champion
Greg Rutherford and emerging
heptathlon star Katerina JohnsonThompson are among other medal
favorites.

Argentina Facing
Sanctions Over
Falklands Banner
ARGENTINAS football association is
facing disciplinary measures from FIFA
after some national-team players unfurled
a banner at a recent friendly related to the
dispute over the Falkland Islands.
Before the pre World Cup match
against Slovenia, Argentine players stood
behind a banner that read in Spanish: Las
Malvinas son Argentinas The Malvinas
are Argentine.
FIFA said last month it was investigating the case, citing a statute that prohibits
provocative or aggressive actions and
another dealing with team conduct.
Britain and Argentina went to war
in 1982 over the Falklands in the South
Atlantic known as Malvinas in Spanish.
Since the defeat Argentina has continued
to raise the issue of sovereignty.
FIFA insists the World Cup is a sporting
event that should stay clear of politics.

Lee has been fined 1,815 after pleading

guilty to fraud for selling a fan a cue on
Facebook, but not sending it.
Lee, once the fifth-ranked player in the
world, appeared before the Magistrates
Court in Swindon last month following a police investigation prompted by
a complaint by Marco Fai Pak Shek of
Hong Kong.
Shek agreed to buy the cue from Lee for
1,600 but never received it. Lee must now
pay back that money in addition to a 110
fine and 105 in additional fees.
Lee was found guilty last September of
seven charges of match fixing in 2008 and
2009 and received a 12-year ban from the
sport. His appeal was dismissed last month.

Games in London in
2012 but returned to
training in January,
with the goal of competing at the Commonwealth Games.
He says, Im over
the moon to have been

so hard towards since the end of last
year and its testament to my coach and
everyone around me who have given me
the support.
Smith won an Olympic silver medal
on the pommel horse in London as well
as a bronze in the team event, to add to

Britains Johnson-Thompson
Wins Hypo Heptathlon
KATARINA Johnson-Thompson won the
womens heptathlon at the IAAF Hypo
Meeting last month for the fourth British
victory in five years after Jessica EnnisHill dominated the event from 2010-12.
Ranked third before the final discipline,
Johnson-Thompson came second in the
800 meters to overtake leader Nafissatou
Thiam of Belgium and last years winner
Brianne Theisen-Eaton of Canada.
Johnson Thompson won the long jump
with a 6.70-meter effort and finished the
competition with a personal best of 6,682
points to beat runner-up Theisen-Eaton,
who set a Canadian record with 6,641.
Dafne Schippers was third with a new
Dutch best mark of 6,545 points, edging
fellow Dutchwoman Nadine Broersen by
nine points. Thiam dropped to fifth with
6,508.

MULTIPLE Olympic
champion Ben Ainslie
is trying to raise about
80m in his bid to bring
back the Americas Cup
trophy to Britain in 2017.
The Americas Cup
is named after the yacht
America, which won the inaugural trophy
off the Isle of Wight in 1851. It has never
been won by a British entry.
Ainslie launched his project in a presentation attended by the Duchess of
Cambridge, a keen sailor herself.
Ainslie already won the regatta once,
playing a pivotal role as Oracle Team USA
defended its title in a stunning comeback
last year.
Ainslie will skipper a new team he
hopes will win the next Americas Cup
in 2017.
He says we want to bring it home,
it would be an amazing thing for this
country.
Ainslie says his team has already
secured about 40 percent of the 80m
funding.

Amid Search For Scapegoats,

Three And Out
Hodgson Is Fortunate
By Rob Harris
AFTER ENGLANDS World Cup fiasco, Roy
Hodgson realizes the country is searching for a scapegoat, and accepts hes
fortunate to have survived as coach.
Despite England failing to reach the second round at a tournament for the first time
since 1958, the Football Association wants
Hodgson to see out his contract until the
2016 European Championship.
I am very pleased to have had that backing scapegoats are always necessary in
times of failure. One understands that after
being in football for a long time, Hodgson
said. One would like to think your work
you do is judged over a long period of time
... on your ability, on what you bring to the
job and what qualities and what you can do
going forward.
With no significant clamor for Hodgson
to be Englands fall-guy, the 66-year-old
Londoner is vowing to complete his four-year
contract, certain he retains the support of
players and coaches.
SELFISH
I didnt want to be the one for selfish reasons possibly to turn around and say Right,
its hurting me. Ill take the easy way out,
Hodgson said at Englands Rio de Janeiro
training base. I didnt want to resign.
Despite England opening Group D with two
2-1 losses to Italy and Uruguay, there were
glimpses of a potentially promising future for
some of Hodgsons younger players, includ-

ing 19-year-old winger Raheem Sterling and

20-year-old midfielder Ross Barkley.
I believe theyre more than accepting of
the work were trying to do, that they share
our belief, share our goals, share our vision.
As a result, with the backing of the FA and
the people around me I feel Im the right man
to continue.
FUTURE
And, going into qualifying for the 2016
European Championship in September,
Hodgson sees hope for the future.
The major calamity or the major blow for
us is the fact that we feel we were so close,
Hodgson said. All these young players were
so close to reaching that and getting that
confidence whereas now, like the rest of us
more experienced ones, have got to suffer
the fact we have failed.
In the final game against Costa Rica, a
milk-toast performance by an England team
with nine changes, saw a 0-0 draw give the
Central Americans top spot and qualification
in the group. Following this performance valid
criticism was heaped upon Roy Hodgsons
tactics and the teams lack of adventure.
Englands bottom place finish is the first
time England have ever been knocked out the
World Cup at the group stage since 1958.
They scored two goals, lost two games and
drew one.
Meanwhile, Uruguay beat Italy 1-0, amidst
controversy of yet another biting incident by
Luis Suarez, and qualified in second place
in Group D.

For England

By Ridge Mahoney
FOR ENGLAND, the 2014 World Cup
ended in Belo Horizonte, where 64
years ago an unknown band of scrappy
American players shocked the world
by topping the games aristocrats, 1-0.
At this World Cup, another team

and Canada and everything in between
blossomed into a remarkable story.
Grouped with three previous World
Cup winners, Costa Rica playing
in the competition for just the fourth
time reached the round of 16 before
tying England, 0-0, in the final group
