I was born in a sea-side town in Malaysia called Mersing. Its a small
town with a population of about fifty thousand people, so its relatively
peaceful. The landscape has maintained its natural appearance, and
many foreigners flock to Mersing every summer to behold its
picturesque beauty.
The main occupation in Mersing is fishing. In the past decade, tourism
has also become profitable for many locals. Tourists start arriving in
May, and by June, the small streets of Mersing are flooded with people.
Mersings population is made up of Malays, Chinese, and Indians. The
majority are Malays. They make their living as fishermen or farmers.
The Chinese are shopkeepers or hotel owners. The Indians, which are
the minority in Mersing, are civil servants or rubber tappers.
Sometimes it amazes me that so many tourists come to Mersing. The
town only has three streets with shops. Many people wouldnt enjoy
living here, but its home to me.
