sighting ?????? * According to Ummul-Qura: 30 Safar 1430 Hijrah.

The birth of the Rabi-ul-Awwal 1430 crescent will take place on Wednesday 25
February 2009 at 01:35 UT/GMT. In Pakistan, the time will be 06:35 on the morning of
Wednesday 25 February 2009 and in Saudi Arabia, it will be 04:35.

As the age of the crescent and the other factors affecting its visibility, e.g. Lag,
Rel. Azi and Elongation etc. will be extremely defective in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia,
the Astronomy Department of Jamia’-tur-Rasheed, in consonance with Al-Beruni,
Yaqoob bin Tariq, Babylonians as well as nearly more than eighteen other ancient and
modern criteria, predicts that there is no possibility at all of sighting the crescent with
the naked eye in Pakistan, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and a major part of
the inhabited world. Only in Alaska and the furthermost region of North America there
is a clear possibility of sighting the crescent on Wednesday 25 February 2009 according
to nearly all the ancient and modern criteria of sighting the moon.

According to a number of relevant criteria, there is a clear possibility of sighting

the crescent in the entire North American Continent as well as Central America.

Bernard Yallop and Shaukat Odeh have predicted a slight chance of sighting the
crescent with the naked eye in Venezuela and Columbia ……… the northern-most areas
of South America. According to Khalid Shaukat (USA), and SAAO also there is a slight
possibility of sighting the crescent in the above-mentioned regions as well as in Ireland,
Spain and Morocco. Dr. Omar Afzal, the Chairman of CFCO [an American committee of
Astronomy established since 1978, among whose members are Dr. Syed Kamal Abdali,
Dr. Monzur Ahmed, Dr. Rauf Imam, Charles Evans (Abu Bakr) etc.], have said that
there is no possibility of sighting the moon anywhere in the world except in North and
Central America.

On 26 February 2009, the conditions of the crescent will be so excellent that,

according to all modern and ancient criteria, the Rabi-ul-Awwal crescent will be clearly
visible in nearly the entire inhabited world with the exclusion of South-West Australia,
New Zealand, and the southern-most regions of Argentina and Chile.

Conditions of the crescent in Karachi on the evening of Thursday 26 February 2009:

According to Dr. Monzur Ahmad’s software, Mooncalculator6.0, the conditions of

the crescent in Karachi on Thursday 26 February 2009 at the time of sunset, i.e. at
18:32 (UT+5), will be as follows:
Altitude: 16.1 Degrees

Relative Azimuth = +2.98 Degrees

Elongation = 17.1 Degrees

Age = 35 hours 58 minutes

Lag. = I hour 17 minutes

Phase =2.47 %

In the light of the details mentioned above it is perfectly clear that the crescent
will be clearly visible in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia etc. on Thursday 26 February 2009 and
thus 1st Rabi’-ul-Awwal 1430 should fall on Fri. 27 February 2009.

According to all the modern and ancient criteria, on Wednesday 25 February

2009, the conditions of the crescent will be so defective in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia as
well as a major part of the inhabited world, that it will not be possible to sight it
anywhere in these countries with the naked eye. Thus if people in these countries claim
to have sighted it in the evening of Wednesday 25 February and if Heads of the local
moon sighting committees, believing their claims, announce the sighting of the
crescent, then the Committees should publish the names, locality, number of witnesses
and the questions they were asked so that the experts of Fiqh and Astronomy, working
on an international level, may study the contents of the decision minutely and further
improve their research work.
