From the big kingdom of Animalia, narrowed down to Chordata,
These little ones are with us in subphylum Vertebrata

Similar to humans, in class Mammalia
But not quite, their orders Rodentia!
In Cavidae, lets visit their family
Dont get too attached though, you might get hooked on these cavies!

Because now we introduce to you, Cavia porcellus!

BALDWIN GUINEA PIGS

Background
The Baldwin was a spontaneous mutation from white crested cavies
belonging to a Californian cavy fancier who was breeding them for show.

1. Hair and coat:
a. Born with full coat then sheds as they grow
b. At 2 months, they are completely bald with absolutely no hair at all
or very minimal at their feet.
2. Hair Parting
a. No central parting
3. Head
a. Ears are shapely and dangly on a rose petal fashion
b. Eyes are large, full and bright. They can come in pink, ruby cast,
dark, black or red.
4. Body
a. Medium length body with wrinkles
b. Rubbery texture of the skin
5. Color
a. Can display any of the basic colors




TEDDY GUINEA PIGS

Background:
Basically, Teddy Guinea Pigs originated in Peru like the rest of the guinea
pigs. The Teddy Guinea Pig is the result of a genetic mutation. It was later bred
competitively, and the Teddy became a recognized breed in 1978.

1. Hair and coat:
a. Just like the other guinea pigs, the teddy pig is wiry, short soft and
easy to care for. There hair is also non-matting, but due to wiry
texture, dirt and shavings can be trapped and cause skin
irritations. They got their hair from evolution, i.e. adapting to the
cold
2. 2.Hair Parting:
a. There is no parting present.
3. Head:
a. Nose: They have the same so-called Roman nose as the
American Guinea Pig. This simply means that their noses are wide
and curved.
b. Whiskers: They have long and straight whiskers.
4. Body:
a. There body is shorter than most other. Medium-length body
5. Color:
a. The Teddy Guinea Pig may be found in any of the standard Guinea
pig colors. Agouti patterns are common in this breed. (each hair
has alternate dark and light bands of color)



PERUVIAN GUINEA PIG


Background:
This type of Guinea pig is the progenitor of all long hair breeds.

1. Hair and coat:
a. Long luxurious hair with swirls or rosettes, rosettes present
across the hips, shoulders and at the crown. The rosette at crown
can cause hair to grow over the face.
b. Hair is straight, smooth and can grow several inches in length.

a. Central parting is present
3. Head
a. Broad head and short face
b. Eyes: large and full
c. Ears: petal shaped and droop
4. Body
a. Long and can measure 20-40.5 cm in length
5. Color
a. It comes in numerous colors. Tricolored ones are usually
considered to be the most desirable but single colored and
bicolored cavies are also attractive.

TEXEL GUINEA PIG (Long-haired Sheltie)

Background
It originated in England in the 1980s when a Silkie guinea pig was crossed
with a Rex guinea pig.

1. Hair and coat:
a. Has a lock, thick, curly coat; its spiral curls cover the entire body
including the belly
2. Parting:
a. Central parting is present
3. Head:
a. Broad head with almost round face covered with short hair
beneath their ears and lower jaw
4. Body:
a. Short and compact in appearance, making them appear even
fluffier
5. Color:
a. Comes in variety of colors and patterns (in the picture, it is a
combination of white and light brown to orange in color)



CORONET GUINEA PIG

Background
First bred in England in the mid-1970s; came from the crossing of a Silkie
guinea pig with an American Crested guinea pig

1. Hair:
a. are long-haired with a satin coat, meaning denser and glossier
2. Parting:
a. no central parting of hair
3. Head:
a. has a single rosette on top of it; has a roman nose, meaning wide
and curved
4. Body:
a. rounded-body
5. Color:
a. It comes in variety of colors and patterns
