Skiers first time skiing

Skier needs to learn turns

Goals:

To provide a fun paced Skiing-learning experience with a major emphasis on safety and
respect.

To develop a learning/teaching partnership by using the CAP Model.

To perform wedge turns.

To perform basic freestyle maneuvers.

To learn lift usage and safety.

Objectives:

Develop basic maneuverability on flat and incline.

Introduce the basic wedge to control speed and perform stopping maneuvers.

Introduce basic freestyle maneuvers.

Introduce single wedge turns.

Mechanics: Apply the fundamental movements, and performance concepts.

Introduction:

Introduce Safety and Equipment.

Introduce yourself to the class, walk them to the teaching area, and cover equipment and
safety.

Introduce the skis, boots, and bindings

Discuss the skier’s responsibility code when it is appropriate. (Respect earns respect)
Discuss the Faultline Terrain Parks rules when it is appropriate.

Discuss weather conditions of the day and the equipment recommended for those
conditions.

Discuss falling smart, as well as helmet and other protective gear issues.

Discuss lost children procedures.

Part 1:

Develop basic maneuverability on flat and incline.

Cover sidestepping and duck walking.

Cover the basics of turning the skis – side step around, bullfighter’s turn.

Introduce the basic athletic stance.

Practice walking and climbing.

Introduce skiing to a wedge stop.

Part 2:

Lift Usage.

Instruct children how to use chairlift and or magic carpet lifts.

Always insure pole straps are loose and poles are secure.

Give specific direction to class and operator.

Part 3:

Beginning Skiing.

Adjust exercises as the terrain dictates.


Ski across terrain using basic wedge for speed control and stopping.

Introduce static turn techniques for direction control.

Practice traversing in both directions.

Part 4:

Introduce Wedge Turns.

Introduce single wedge turn.

Practice in both directions.

Traverse across the hill to a stop then turn.

Practice in both directions.

Part 5:

Linked Wedge Turns

Continue wedge turn practice.

Eliminate stopping between turns.

Introduce funnel turn exercise.

Linked turns using follow me.

Practice and mileage.

Part 6:

Backwards Wedge.

Statically turn the student up the hill.

Step into a backwards wedge.

Practice releasing and engaging the ski edges.

Introduce pressuring maneuvers to initiate slight directional changes.

Part 7:
Freestyle Hops.

On flat terrain, have student alternate lifting each foot off the snow.

Practice stationary hopping to develop balance.

Traverse across the hill at a moderate pitch.

Practice "marching" the skis while moving.

Perform hopping moves while moving.

Perform in both directions.

Review Wedge Christy.

Speed is slightly higher than single turn.

Skis are matched together in the initiation phase of the turn.

Perform single parallel turns in both directions.

Link parallel turns together.

Cover Park and Pipe rules and etiquette.

Part 5:

Introduce Ground 180’s.

Using leverage and rotation to spin 180.


1. Review flat ski versus edged ski.

2. Statically, balance on center of ski.

3. Review backwards wedge

4. Statically, use poles to feel the spinning motion.

5. Moving slowly forward on relatively flat terrain, initiate first spinning motion.

Part 6:

Introduce Beginning Jumps.

Using small terrain features, introduce basic air movements.

1. Inspect jump before use to assess speed requirement and landing zone.

2. Approach jump with weight centered on both skis.

3. Apply slight hopping motion on the lip of the jump.

4. Stay flexed and centered while in the air.

5. Extend legs to absorb the landing.

6. Cover jump safety and etiquette.

Part 7:

Introduce Beginning Boxes.

Using beginning wide boxes, introduce basic 50/50 maneuvers.

1. Review basic jump.

2. Inspect box before use to assess speed requirement and landing zone.

3. Apply slight hopping motion at the lip of the box.

4. Reach forward and stay flexed and centered while on the box.

5. Extend legs to absorb the landing.

6. Cover box safety and etiquette.


Part 8:

Introduce Beginning Halfpipe.

Using half pipe, introduce skiing the pipe walls.

1. Ride through bottom of the pipe.

2. Review hopping and turning.

3. Introduce riding up and down the pipe walls.

4. Incorporate basic hops on pipe walls.

5. Cover box safety and etiquette.

Intermediate Boxes.

Review 50/50 on wide box.


Perform 50/50 on narrower box.

Introduce grinding maneuver on box.

Part 7:

Intermediate Half Pipe.

Review basic half pipe.

Carry more speed through transition to reach lip of the pipe.

Introduce hop turns off the lip of the pipe.

Introduce transition to lip and landing backwards.

Cover pipe safety and etiquette.

Advanced Half Pipe.

IMPROVING HALF-PIPE: (Functional Air)

Work lower section of pipe, increased speed.

Link turns higher on wall with skis leaving the snow surface.

Drop in from start of half-pipe.

Choose "hits" or places to maneuver in advance.

Repeat same line for confidence.

Mix forward and backward landings.
