The population here is made up of Malays, Chinese and Indians. The majority of the people
are Malays. There are either fishermen or farmers. The Chinese are mostly shopkeepers
and restaurant and hotel owners. The Indians who are the minority are either civil servants
or rubber tappers.
The town consists of three streets of shops. There are three schools, a Chinese, a Malay
and an English medium schools. There is a hospital and a few private clinics, a cinema hall,
library and a big wet market by the sea. There are a number of hotels to accommodate
tourists who flock to Mersing to visit the Islands. The people in my hometown live in peace

Read the description of the town and write a similar description of your home
town in about 200 words. First write some facts about it.

I live in Newcastle, a city in the north-east of England. Newcastle is on the bank of the
River Tyne. It is quite big, with a population of about 200,000 people. there is a
cathedral and a university. There are five bridges over the River Tyne, which link
Newcastle to the next town Gateshead, where there is one of the biggest shipping
centers in the world, the Metro Centre.
A few years ago, the main industries were shipbuilding and coal-mining, but now the
chemical and soap industries are more important.
I moved from Newcastle ten years ago but I often return. I miss the people, who are
so warm and friendly, and I miss the wild, beautiful countryside near the city, where
there are so many hills and streams. People who are born near the River Tyne have
a special name. They are called "Geordies". I am very pleased to be a "Geordie"!

EXPLORE WRITING
MY HOMETOWN

In this section, you must write one 10-12 sentence paragraph describing your
hometown, a place you know well. Choose places, activities and interesting you
may want to mention about it. Use the vocabulary and language that you have
studied in class. For example, you should use, a variety of adjectives ,and you can
also say what you think of the town/city using the structures that you practiced in
this unit (e.g. simple present tense).

Step One: Brainstorm. What can you say about the town/city? Consider ideas
from the questions in this exercise. Write down a list of all of your ideas, including
examples and supporting information. You can brainstorm alone, with a partner,
or in a group. Your notes should be in simple form; dont worry about grammar,
spelling, or using complete sentences when you are brainstorming.
1. Where do you live? .......................................................................................
2. How big is your town or city? ......................................................................
3. What is there to do there? .............................................................................
4. When is the best time to visit? ......................................................................
5. Where do you go with your friends? .............................................................
6. Do you like living there? ...............................................................................

favorite activities/
places?
What else can you talk about? Choose
some places you would like to mention!

correct it.

10
Step Two: Review your brainstorming notes. Which of your ideas are you
going to include in your paragraph?

Step Three: Give a sentence to start your paragraph.

Step Four: Look at the rubric that your teacher uses to give you a grade. What
is he/she looking for? Remember these points when you are writing.
Step Five: Write the first draft of your paragraph. It must include 10-12
sentences, and it should include simple present structure, adjectives, AND to
connect sentences and because to explain your ideas. Please double-space your
assignment. You must write your paragraph in class. You are not allowed to finish
it at home, and you cannot use notes from outside of the class.

1
Step Six: Exchange paragraphs with a partner for peer-editing. You are going
to help your partner by editing their assignment. Look at the grading rubric again.
With your teacher, make a list of some things that you are going to look for when
you edit your partners paper. Start editing. Tell your partner if you find a mistake
or have a suggestion.
Step Seven: Make necessary corrections, and rewrite your paragraph. Your
teacher will collect your brainstorming notes, your first draft, and your final
assignment. Although he/she will look at your brainstorming notes and your first
draft, you are only going to receive a grade for the final version
FINAL PARAGRAPH DRAFT:

FINAL ORAL TASK

The final task consists in an individual oral presentation in which you will talk
about yourself and your hometown. You will use information from the Speaking
Lesson of the unit, as well as information from the Writing activity.

PART ONE: REVIEW OF SENTENCE
STRUCTURE TERMINOLOGY
Complete the sentences by matching
the items on the left with the correct
definition on the right.

WHAT IS A
PARAGRAPH?
A paragraph is a collection of
sentences that are all related to
one main topic. The main topic is
basically what the paragraph is
about.
The first sentence of a paragraph
is called a TOPIC SENTENCE. It
tells generally what the
paragraph is about, containing
the main idea of the complete
writing piece. As the main and
first sentence, its primary
purpose is to get the attention of
the reader.

A subject

An independentclause

A verb

A clause

A dependentclause

A simplesentence

A period

...contains one independent clause and ends

with a period.

...is who or what a sentence is about. It is
always a noun or a pronoun.

...is a group of words that includes a subject
and a verb.

...has a subject and a verb, but it doesnt
express a complete idea or thought.

...is what the subject of a sentence is or is
doing.

...is a punctuation mark at the end of a
sentence.

...has a subject and a verb, and it
communicates a complete idea or thought.

6
PART TWO: REVIEW OF
SUBJECTS AND VERBS
In the following simple sentences,
underline the subject with one line and
the verb with two lines.

Sometimes it is more challenging to identify subjects and verbs. Here are some tips to
help you:
In an imperative sentence (or command), the subject is always an invisible you.
Usually - but not always - the subject comes before the verb in a sentence.
There are exceptions. For example:
o In sentences that begin with Here + a form of tobe or with There + a form of
tobe (There is a test today.)
o In some questions that dont begin with wh question words (Are your parents
from Barranquilla?)
A verb in the infinitive form (to + verb) cannot be the verb in a sentence.
Auxiliaryverbs (also known as helpingverbs) are often added to main verbs. Some
common auxiliary verbs are: be, can, could, do, did, may, might, have, must, should,
will, would.
The complete verb in a sentence includes the main verb AND auxiliary verbs.
A verb ending in ing must have an auxiliary verb before it.
Words such as not, only, always, often, sometimes, never, ever, and just are NOT part
of the verb.
Again, underline the subject with one line and the complete verb with two lines.

1. My teacher has talked nonstop for two hours.
2. In December, I am going to drive to Medellin with a couple of friends.
1. We study at Universidad del Norte.
2. Chemistry is my worst class.
3. Sitting in Chemistry class gives me a headache.
4. My friends and I prefer playing football.
5. We are playing a match at 7:00 tonight.
6. Call me after the game.

There are many coordinating
conjunctions, can you find more?

7
3. Can they return the books to the library tomorrow?
4. Medical students should not be late for class.
5. Olga and Pierre are waiting for the TransMetro.

PART THREE: REVIEW OF COMPOUND SENTENCES
In the previous level, you learned how to connect two simple sentences using a comma
(,) Now, you will learn what a coordinatingconjunction is (and, but, so, and or). The new
sentence is called a compoundsentence.
Compound Sentence = an independent clause + a comma + a coordinating
conjunction + an independent clause

*Im taking two

Make compoundsentences by connecting the following pairs of simple sentences. Use a
comma and add an appropriate coordinatingconjunction. Next, underline the subjects
with one line and the complete verbs with two.

1. Du Nord Plaza is cheaper. I prefer Cafe du Nord.
2. My brothers name is Juan Carlos. My sisters name is Jennifer.
3. It was raining heavily this morning. There were arroyos on Calle 76.
4. Maybe she is studying engineering. Perhaps she is studying nursing.
5. I like my English teacher. He is very, very strict and demanding.
6. Is your girlfriend European? Is she North American?

Make compoundsentences using a comma, a coordinatingconjunction, and an
independentclause.

2. Eduardo failed the first English test

3. The hospital was a very stressful place to work

teacher! Remember, this material is also covered in further units; so dont hesitate to ask
now!
