Every student of Bachelors in Business Administration at Bahria Institute of

to acquaint the students with ractical alications of theoretical concets taught
to them during conduct of their BBA rogram. I did internshi in Silk Bank. it was
a nice oortunity to have a close comarison of theoretical concet in ractical

2. Introduction
2.1. Central background information
"he word &Bank& is said to have %een derived from the words Bancus or Banque
or Bank. "his history of %anking is traced to as early as '((( B.). "he riests in
2reece used to kee money and valua%les of the eole in temles. "hese
riests thus acted as financial agents. "he origin of %anking is also traced to
early goldsmiths. "hey used to kee strong safes for storing the money and
valua%les of the eole. "he ersons who had surlus money found it safe and
convenient of deosit their valua%les with them. "he first stage in the
develoment of modern %anking# thus# was the acceting of deosits of cash
from those ersons who had surlus money with them.
"he goldsmiths used to issue receits for the money deosited with them. "hese
receits %egan to ass from hand to hand in settlement of transactions %ecause
eole had confidence in the integrity and solvency of goldsmiths. 3hen it was
found that these receits were fully acceted in ayment of de%ts4 then the
receits were drawn in such a way that it entitled any holder to claim the
secified amount of money from goldsmiths. A deositor who is to make the
ayments may now get the money in cash from goldsmiths or ay over the
receit to the creditor. "hese receits were the earlier %ank notes. "he second
stage in the develoment of %anking thus was the issue of %ank notes.
"he goldsmiths soon discovered that all the eole who had deosited money
with them do not come to withdraw their funds in cash. "hey found that only a
few ersons resented the receits for encashment during a given eriod of time.
"hey also found that most of the money deosited with them was lying idle. At
the same time4 they found that they were %eing constantly requested for loan on
good security. "hey thought it rofita%le to lend at least some of the money
deosited with them to the needy ersons. "his roved quite a rofita%le
%usiness for the5 goldsmiths. "hey instead of charging safe keeing charges
from the deositors %egan to give them interest on the money deosited with
them. "his was the third stage in the develoment of %anking.
