Making 0aper 1rom 2oo!*hips
Do !ou have an! paper in !our bag - it ma! be a sill! 8uestion but do !ou kno*
ho* to make paper - #hat is paper made of - right. "nd ho* about *oodchipping - have
!ou heard about it - #ell, *ood chipping is a process used to obtain pulp and paper
products from the trees.
5irst of all, the tops and branches of the trees are cut out and then the logs are
taken out to the mill. "t the mill, the bark of the logs is removed and the logs are taken to a
chipper *hich cuts them into small pieces called *oodchips. (he *oodchips are then
screened to remove dirt and other impurities. "t this stage the! are exported in this form or
changed into the pulp b! chemicals and heat. (hen the pulp is bleached and the *ater
content is removed. 5inall!, the pulp is rolled out to make paper.

#e often hear about solar cars, solar heating and solar batteries. 1ut *ill solar
energ! ever be the ma'or source of energ! for societ! -
Solar energ! is cheaper than other fossil fuels because *e can get an abundant
source from the sun.
)n sunn! desert areas, 5CD of the sun0s radiation that reaches the ground could be
used to produce electricit! for business and industr!, to provide heat, light, and hot *ater for
homes. 7xperimental solar ponds can also produce hot *ater to drive generators.
Enfortunatel!, *e can0t !et po*er our homes entirel! on sunlight.
Solar energ! can onl! be used effectivel! in bright light. )ts greatest potential
therefore is in hot countries that have clear skies for most of the !ear. 1ut, unfortunatel!
most houses are not al*a!s in the sunniest part of the *orld. Moreover, in order to harness
solar po*er , solar cells are needed to convert sunlight directl! into electricit!. Solar cells are
ver! cheap to run, but relativel! expensive to bu! and man! people can0t afford them.
