PROGRAMME IN BIOINFORMATICS
1. ELIGIBILITY " ADMISSION
B.Sc in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology,
Bio-informatics, Botany, Zoology/Plant Biology/Chemistry/Computer Science,
Computer Application, Electronics, Environmental Science, Mathematics,
Microiology, Physics, Statistics !ith not less than ""# mar$s in the su%ect
concerne&. MBBS, B.'ech an& B.Sc. M(' &egree hol&ers can also apply.
2. CURRICULUM
'he M.Sc. Bioinformatics Programme un&er the Cre&it an& Semester
System )CSS* consisting of + semesters shall e,ten& over a perio& of - years.
Semester means a term consisting of a minimum of ./ !or$ing &ays, inclusive of
e,amination, &istriute& over a minimum of 01 !ee$s of " !or$ing &ays each. A
stu&ent has to complete a minimum of 1/ cre&its !hich !oul& e &istriute& as
follo!ing.

lecture /minimum of - hours la/fiel& !or$ per !ee$ for 01 !ee$s in a semester.
'he course !ill e consi&ere& as complete& only y con&ucting the final
e,amination. 7o regular stu&ent shall register for more than -+ cre&its an& less
than 02 cre&its per semester. 'he total minimum cre&its, re8uire& for completing a
P9 programme is 1/.
,P$#/$011% C#$% c#&$'%- (PC) means a course that the stu&ent a&mitte&
to a particular programme must successfully complete to receive the :egree an&
!hich cannot e sustitute& y any other course.
;P$#/$011% E(%c)*+% c#&$'%- (PE) means a course, !hich can e
sustitute&, y e8uivalent course from the same su%ect an& a minimum numer
of courses is re8uire& to complete the programme.
,P$#/$011% P$#2%c)- means a regular pro%ect !or$ !ith state& cre&its on
!hich the stu&ent un&ergo a pro%ect un&er the supervision of a teacher in the
parent &epartment / any appropriate research center in or&er to sumit a
&issertation on the pro%ect !or$ as specifie&.
,Ac0.%1*c 3%%4- is a unit of five !or$ing &ays in !hich &istriution of !or$
is organi<e& from &ay one to &ay five, !ith five contact hours of one hour
&uration in each &ay. A se8uence of 01 such aca&emic !ee$ constitutes a
semester.
5%$# S%1%')%$ means a semester in !hich a stu&ent is permitte& to opt out &ue
to unforeseen genuine reason.

e,ternal e,aminers an& one internal e,aminer.
'here shall e one en&-semester e,amination of 5 hours &uration in each
lecture ase& course an& practical course.
A 8uestion paper may contain short ans!er type/annotation, short essay type
8uestions/prolems an& long essay type 8uestions. :ifferent types of
8uestions shall have &ifferent !eightage to 8uantify their range. >eightage
can vary from course to course &epen&ing on their comparative importance,
ut a general pattern may e follo!e& y the Boar& of Stu&ies.
EVALUATION AND GRADING
Evaluation? 'he evaluation scheme for each course shall contain t!o parts@ )a*
internal evaluation an& )* e,ternal evaluation. -"# !eightage shall e given to
internal evaluation an& the remaining A"# to e,ternal evaluation an& the ratio an&
!eightage et!een internal an& e,ternal is 0?5. Both internal an& e,ternal
evaluation shall e carrie& out using :irect-gra&ing system.

system involving perio&ic !ritten tests, assignments, seminars an& atten&ance in

components for internal evaluation is a follo!s.

After the successful completion of a semester, Semester 9ra&e Point
Average )S9PA* of a stu&ent in that semester is calculate& using the formula
given elo!. Ior the successful completion of semester, a stu&ent shoul& pass all
courses an& score a minimum S9PA of -./. Jo!ever, a stu&ent is permitte& to
move to the ne,t semester irrespective of her/his S9PA.
Ior instance, if a stu&ent has registere& for ;nK courses of cre&its C0, C-
LLLL,Cn in a semester an& if she/he has score& cre&it points P0,
P-LLLL.,Pn respectively in these courses, then S9PA of the stu&ent in that
semester is calculate& using the formula.
