Whats New in Brief
The following content contains short descriptions of new features in this release, organized by domain. The
companion document, Petrel E&P Software Platform 2013 Whats New, contains more detailed explanations,
descriptions of functionality, and workflows for these enhancements.
Structural Framework
Feature Short Description
Performance and robustness
improvements
The Volume Based Modeling (VBM) horizon method always produces
watertight zones independently from the complexity of the model. For
complex models, the performance of zone creation has been vastly
improved.
QC manager A new tool allowing QC of the quality of the fault interpretation prior
to the construction of the horizon surfaces has been introduced.
VBM: Handling complex fault
networks
The VBM horizon method incorporates a set of robust and innovative
algorithms, which are designed to enable the construction of structural
models incorporating complex fault networks.
VBM: Modeling geological
sequences
VBM simultaneously models all conformable horizons as a single
conformable sequence, preventing crossovers that commonly occur in
thin layered reservoirs.
VBM: Dealing with sparse
interpretation data
In the VBM horizon method, the computation of the iso-stratigraphic
property field accounts for the geometry of all input data. It will
naturally produce horizons that fit all input data points, while
preserving the integrity of the stratigraphic column, yielding consistent
thicknesses and fault displacements.
VBM: Proportional layering By using the VBM method, creating a new proportional horizon
amounts to extracting an additional surface of the iso-stratigraphy
property field.
VBM: Fast model update The Two Steps modeling workflow includes:
Fast generation and update of coarse scale model, allowing
interpretation issues to be fixed.
Refinement and zone creation, once satisfactory quality has been
achieved.
VBM: Thin layer handling The VBM horizon method now allows building thinly layered reservoir
models and incorporating all geological zones identified form well data
into the stair step grid.

Geophysics
Feature Short Description
MultiZ interpretation MultiZ interpretation is a new object in Petrel, which handles multi-z
interpretation values. This type of object will help to interpret complex
structures with single or multiple overhangs, salt domes, reefs, etc.
Interval velocity maps You can now create Interval velocity maps for an existing velocity
model. These output maps can be used for the purpose of QC.
Seismic Reconstruction 2D The seismic reconstruction 2D process now allows you to define the
geological horizon type in order to handle unconformities, such as
erosional surfaces, resulting in chrono-stratigraphic displays of seismic
sections.
Seismic Compression A process launched from the context menu of a ZGY volume will allow
you to compress the volume. The compression is a lossy method, and
will be governed by the compression-noise level that you allow the
operation to introduce.
SEG-Y 2D Toolbox Scaled Shot points: The Toolbox is now able to load SEG-Y
files containing scaled shot point numbers. The integer part of
the shot point values are typically located in trace header byte
locations 197-201 with corresponding multiplication scalars
values located in bytes 201-202. Upon reading SEG-Y files, the
integer and the scalar values are multiplied to produce decimal
shot point numbers.
Cropping: Previously, cropping or restricting the loading time
range shifted the section to have incorrect start times. This has
been fixed.
Zero XY-coordinates extrapolation: Previously, zero
coordinates detected at the end of the line were not
extrapolated. This has been fixed; zero coordinates encountered
throughout the line will be interpolated and/or extrapolated when
this option is selected.
Fixed issues with reading navigation file layout, cropping output
time range, and extrapolating zero coordinates at end of line.
2D lines: min-max amplitude Min-max amplitude values, which have been scanned or set, are now
preserved when saving a project.
Mistie Manager Fixed issues with selecting multiple layers/columns for copy/paste.
Composite lines Fixed issues with clearing uncommitted work (2D window):
Missing rubberband when drawing composite line.
Error message when drawing composite after changing to new
project.
Keyboard shortcut key (L) Interpretation window: fixed shortcut key L (select/rotate orthogonal
intersection) to be transient; upon completion, functionality returns to
prior mode, typically horizon interpretation.

Feature Short Description
Horizon interpretation modes Horizon interpretation is now saved when switching between horizon
interpretation modes.
Reconstruction 2D Re-labeled for consistency:
"Reconstruction 2D" label replaces "Restoration 2D".
Stratigraphy types: names are now consistent with Horizon
Modeling process.
Domain conversion Fixed error and eventual crash when writing depth-converted objects
to a full disk.
Make Velocity Model Fixed various issues using Create New when there are existing
velocity models.
Seismic Well Tie Sonic Calibration > Polynomial fit: This option is
recommended when the checkshot used for the calibration of the
sonic is quite nosy. Polynomial fit correction smoothes the
differences between checkshot (time-depth) pairs and the
integrated sonic log, estimating a polynomial drift curve honors
the knee points without fitting the noise.
Synthetic Generation > Time varying wavelet: This tool is
useful to address the phenomenon of decrease of frequencies
and amplitudes with deeper seismic data. Time varying wavelet
may be useful to apply an existing wavelet over different time
intervals to generate a synthetic.
Wavelet Toolbox > Wavelet Average: Wavelet average is a
new algorithm under multi-wavelet methods of the wavelet
toolbox. It calculates an average wavelet from a set of wavelets
that you select. You can define the length and sample interval of
the average wavelet and you also have an additional option to
invert the polarity of the resultant wavelet.
Log Conditioning (Behavioral
Change)
Usability improvements to present depth intervals and log values
during the editions. Additional parameters have been added to the Log
Conditioning > draw user interface to show the start and end depth
interval and the value under modification during the manipulations.

Geology
Feature Short Description
Multiple LAS importer Time series logs introduced in the 2013.1 release were created by a
manual workflow: after importing regular logs and inserting and
editing the time step attribute in the log attributes spreadsheet, you
could then create individual time steps from global time series log
operations tab. In the 2013.2 release, a new LAS importer allows you
to simultaneously import both regular and time series logs in the same
GUI.
Uncertainty analysis in Map-
based volume calculation process
You can now perform uncertainty analysis on surface inputs in the
map-based volume calculation which was introduced in the 2013.1
release. The analysis is based on the same principle as structural
uncertainty. You have the option of specifying the parameters for
structure and property surfaces separately.
Stratigraphic charts Two new options have been added to enable you to duplicate a column
or populate an empty column with the contents of an existing one and
to copy a zone and extend the bounding events at the same time.
Well labeling A new option on the trajectory point gives you more choice on the map
window for the placement of labels along the well path in the case of
highly deviated and horizontal wells.
Fault modeling In the 2013.1 release, a restriction was placed on the type of polygons
that you can select to convert to faults in a fault model. You can select
all the types starting with the word Fault to convert to a fault. This
restriction is retained in the 2013.2 release.
TDR computation from sonic log In prior Petrel releases, the time-depth relationship computations from
the sonic log could misapply the algorithm and produce misleading
one-way time results. In the 2013.2 release, OWT calculated when
running the TDR operation now gives the correct value from first
intervals to last sampled depth. The sonic log depth sampled in MD
will be converted to TVD during calculation, to ensure that the OWT
computation produces the correct result.

Exploration Geology
Feature Short Description
Exploration Geology now a
module
Exploration Geology was previously a plug-in requiring separate
installation via the Ocean plug-in manager. From 2013.2 onwards,
Exploration Geology is a module, which is included in the full
installation of Petrel.
Lithology database Lithologies are needed to define the facies of the zones or layers of
your petroleum systems model. The lithology information will be used
by the simulator to calculate generation, migration, and accumulation
of hydrocarbons.

Feature Short Description
Invasion Percolation Simulations
now visible in Petrel
You can now view the results of an invasion percolation simulation of
a 3D model (simulated in PetroMod) in Petrel.
Separation of Ages and facies
table
You can now create a chrono-stratigraphic column, define the facies in
the facies definition table and connect the data in the Make 1D or
Make 3D petroleum systems model process.
Petroleum systems processes enable construction of 3D geocellular
models in Petrel prior to export to PetroMod petroleum systems
modeling software for dynamic forward modeling of geological
processes in sedimentary basins over geological time spans. To utilize
the Petrel model in PetroMod, it needs ages, and the facies data need
to be refined with data such as geothermal, paleo-geometry, etc.
Petroleum Systems 1D and 3D The PetroMod overlays that are calculated in the simulator have been
re-organized and partially re-named. When you convert the calculated
petroleum systems model to a simple grid model, you select the
overlays to be converted to Petrel properties. For a complete list with
definitions, see the section overlays in the online help.
Charge modeling There were problems with charge runs when using rotated surfaces.
This problem, which occurred when working with point or area
injection, has been fixed.
Make generation properties Undefined values, in surfaces, resulted in extreme values for
pressure/temperature. This has been fixed.
1D and 3D model generation
In the model input, it was not possible to define the bottom of the
lowest layer. The effect was that the basement was not taken into
account. This has been fixed.

Fracture Modeling
Feature Short Description
New geomechanically-based
driver for DFM
This module is based on iBem3D (Poly3D) engine and aims at
computing maps of both natural fracture orientation and density trends
from computed stress field using observed major faults (Petrel seismic
structural framework) and observed fracture data. The following lists
the various attributes of this new driver:
Computation speed - Forward stress simulation takes less than
3 minutes to compute independently from the fault network
complexity.
Handling complex fault networks - The iBem3D (Poly3D)
engine, based on the boundary element method, allows handling
complex fault networks and fault geometries.
Tectonic stress inversion - A technique that allows recovering
tectonic stress inversion characteristics through time and used as
boundary conditions for the forward stress simulations.

Feature Short Description
OFM Data Connector
Modifications
Import Completion Level Data with the OFM Data
Connector: The OFM Data Connector has been modified so you
can now import the completion level data from OFM into Petrel.
This creates a data association between the OFM completion and
the Petrel perforation, which can then be used for visualization
and analysis.
Import Well Annotations with the OFM Data Connector:
The OFM Data Connector has been modified to support the
import of well annotations from OFM for posting on rate time
plots generated with the Results charting and analysis process.
Support Full Flow Path in VFP
Simulation
In well models where the completion depth is above the bottom depth
of tubing or any completion tool depth, the flow path from completion
depth up to the well head is considered in the same way it is
considered for Nodal Analysis calculations. The resulting BHP pressure
in the VFP table is calculated in the tubing the same as it is currently
calculated in PIPESIM.
Support Gas Separator and
Viscosity Correction in ESP
When sensitizing on ESP in a VFP simulation, you can choose to
include a gas separator and apply viscosity correction. Petrel assumes
the efficiency is 100%.
Import Well Location from
PIPESIM if the Well Location is
Defined in GIS
When importing PIPESIM data to Petrel, if the well location is defined
in the PIPESIM GIS component and you select a CRS in Petrel, the well
head location is converted to the selected Petrel CRS. Otherwise, the
well head location in Petrel defaults to (0,0).

Reservoir Engineering
Feature Short Description
Changes to INTERSECT support in
Petrel
When you install Petrel 2013.2, you have the choice between installing
the connector to INTERSECT 2012.2 or INTERSECT 2013.1. The
connector is that part of Petrel that creates Field Management
strategies and exports INTERSECT simulation cases. The default
choice is to install the connector to INTERSECT 2013.1, the newest
release of INTERSECT. You can later change the connector by using
the Modify option in the Petrel E&P Platform installer.
Correct specification by Petrel of
valve pipe diameters may result in
changes to the frictional pressure
drop
WSEGVALV pipe diameter and cross-sectional area are taken from the
devices inner diameter or the constriction diameter (whichever is the
greater), rather than using the WELSEGS-attributes.
Unrecognized summary results are
now visible in the Results pane
Unrecognized summary results are now listed in the Results pane, and
can be viewed through the Results Charting and Analysis process.
Improvements to the reference
valve calculation when converting
to simulation design
Completion design operations that make use of the 'physical valves
equivalent' attribute allowing a single device to represent any
number of physical valves on export to the simulator now have all
WSEGVALV and WELSEGS items scaled correctly.

Studio
Feature Short Description
Well top synchronization status Added support for synchronization status of the Well Tops folder in the
database tool.
Original CRS Studio* now stores the Original Coordinate Reference System (CRS)
information and it can be retrieved from the Database to Petrel. The
value of the Original CRS can be displayed in the Repository Data
Table. The following types are supported:
Seismic 3D survey, any folder with 3D data
Seismic cube
Horizon 3D interpretation
Regular surface
Wells
Boundaries
Polygons
Fault sticks
Lines
Fault interpretation
Points
2D Line navigation
Custom domain objects
Re-parenting of seismic
interpretation
The re-parenting of seismic interpretation has been enhanced. You
now have the ability to re-parent more than one horizon at a time and
to a survey that has a similar geometry (i.e., different CRS in the
database). You can also re-parent seismic interpretation to a survey in
the database with a greater survey range.
Enable/disable Seismic image
during transfer
When seismic data (ZGY/SEGY) is transferred to Studio, you have the
option to enable the generation of a time slice that is also sent to
Studio. With this option enabled, when the repository is indexed, the
seismic cube is represented spatially by a bounding cube and a time
slice at the mid-way point. With the option disabled, you will only see
the bounding cube.
Support of Raster Logs Studio will support raster logs. Images will be stored externally and
Studio will store the location of these files. Send and retrieve of a
well, with these logs, automatically transfer the custom logs under the
selected well.
Find Issues regarding indexing of well user attributes and correct
functioning of the measured depth filter have been fixed.

Feature Short Description
Color table opacity curve settings For objects that support templates and color tables, a new option in
the color table editor allows you to switch between linear and spline
interpolation for the opacity curve.
Geo-referenced images In previous Petrel versions, images geo-referenced in
latitude/longitude were often inaccurately rendered in the large
geographic areas, such as those used in regional exploration
workflows. In the 2013.2 release, you can replace latitude/longitude
coordinates for geo-referenced images with a user-specified scheme.
When rendered in a 2D or 3D window, images morph into spatial
correctness by texture-mapping onto tiled grids.

Known Issues
The following content summarizes known issues and limitations for this release, grouped by domain.
Structural Framework
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Volume Based Modeling (VBM)
Method
Baselap-baselap relationship is not working as expected. It is not
possible to explicitly define truncation rules between
unconformities: the youngest unconformity is always assumed to
be truncating older unconformities.
The stair-step faulting process is disabled when using faults
coming from a VBM model.
Eroded horizon surfaces coming from VBM models are not always
handled properly in pillar gridding. They may be extrapolated
beyond erosion line.
Results are not fully reproducible, especially in areas where there
is no input data to control horizon extrapolation. However,
differences in volume are expected to be less than 1% in areas
where data interpolation is properly constrained.
Zones could present visualization/rendering issues reflected as
empty triangles in Interpretation window, Intersection planes and
Intersection window.

Geophysics
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Seismic Compression
Volume attributes generated from compressed cubes may display
cosmetic artifacts along its edges. These edges are typically zones
along boundaries of irregularly shaped surveys, muting zones at
edges of surveys and zones above sea bottom which in the
compressed cube borders consecutive neighboring samples with
zero values.
WORKAROUND: These cosmetic artifacts can be cropped from
view. Alternatively crop the compressed cube prior to generating
volume attributes.
For compressed cubes intended for more permanent storage, we
recommend to (re)generate these using the next release of seismic
compression process.
Velocity cubes and other non-zero mean (e.g., positive only
values) data types should be compressed with a high (enough) value
SQNR to maintain adequate signal quality.

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
SEG-Y 2D Toolbox
Scaled Shot points: shot point scalar value is currently limited to
1,0000. This will be increased to 10,000 in the next release.
WORKAROUND: Load corrected SEG-Y files using File > Import
SEG-Y Seismic data (*.*).
Upon clicking Define byte location, the Message log shows
"Unexpected error occurred when resizing BinatryHdrGridview
Exception: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less
than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index". This
message can be safely ignored. This message appears when
working in a Windows environment where text size has been set at
values other than 100% of normal size.
WORKAROUND: Set Windows text size to 100% of normal size via
Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display.
MultiZ interpretation
Create triangle mesh (Meshing) process doesnt release all the
memory it used. Depending on the memory available and the size of
the input, the system can run out of memory after several mesh
computations.
WORKAROUND: To force the release of the memory, you need to
save your project and restart Petrel.
MultiZ interpretation may, in some circumstances, render slowly. If
you are experiencing a performance degrade, recreate a MultiZ
interpretation (convert it to polygons, insert a new MultiZ
interpretation and append MultiZ interpretation from polygons).
MultiZ interpretation is not yet supported within the Studio
Environment.
The Structural and Fault analysis license enables the Structural
Analysis tab for MultiZ interpretation objects. The functionality
within this tab is not supported for these objects.
Seismic operations run from the Operations TAB of the MultiZ
Interpretation cannot be undone.
MultiZ interpretation projected point can become disconnected with
the segment on the section (e.g., inline) while editing it on the
crossing section (e.g., crossline).
The restrict mode is not available in the 2013.2 release.
WORKAROUND: Use Flip in front of/behind plane
instead.

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
SEG-Y to ZGY converter
Certain ZGY cubes are being created with checker board-like artifacts.
These artifacts can be observed to be 64 inlines wide and some multiple
of 64 crosslines long. This bug is triggered when 64 full inlines do not fit
in 1Gb of memory, which can be the case for cubes with very long
inlines, or very large cubes with large inline dimensions.

WORKAROUND: When defining the Area to be loaded, specify the end-
crossline number to create a cube geometry with twice the amount of
crossline numbers. The exact number of crosslines to be added is
dependent on several factors (crossline_count *sample_count *64*size
of float), but twice the amount of original crossline numbers will certainly
suffice. This extra geometry size will not consume additional disk space.
After loading completes, crop the ZGY cube to exclude the additional
(empty) crosslines.
Seismic Well Tie
The new version of Seismic Well Tie uses the Petrel domain
conversion algorithm, while the old version used a proprietary
algorithm; hence, small numerical differences are to be expected.
For every study, a temporary folder and objects will be created and
stored under the Input tree; they will be located under the Well >
Study Folder > Visual. This folder should not be deleted.
When wavelets created in the Wavelet Toolbox are copied (using
Copy/Paste), the parameter settings for this new wavelet cannot be
edited.
Deleting any required input data belonging to the Study from the
Input tree will close and delete the current study. All the objects
saved from the study will still be preserved in the Input tree.
If a seismic, log or wavelet used in an SWT study is deleted, the
SWT settings will be auto-populated with the next available object
with the same template.
Deleting the Well Section Window study will delete the information
inside this study and temporary objects created for visualization. All
the objects saved from the study will still be preserved in the Input
tree.
When wavelets are created using the statistical extraction method,
the history is being tagged incorrectly; it will show those wavelets
as the extended white method.

Exploration Geology
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
General
After copying/pasting a Play Chance Mapping, Prospect Assessment,
Prospect Summing, Petroleum Systems 1D, or Petroleum Systems 3D
object on the Input pane, the Edit existing area in the process
dialogs is not updated immediately, i.e., does not show the copied
object (only while the process is open).
Petroleum Systems Quick Look
General
When opening old projects of Petroleum Systems Quick Look from
2009 and 2010, accumulations cannot be viewed with the intersection
plane. Re-run the Charge process with the 2013 version.
Make generation properties
Rotated surfaces which were entered and resulted in an error
message, when removed from the dialog still produce an error
message.
Make generation properties
When the base source rock map is not defined (e.g. holes due to fault
displacement), it results in extremely high maturities and generation /
expulsion masses. Ensure holes in the map are filled, for example by
using the depth values from fault.
Play Chance Mapping Discrete surfaces are not supported by Play Chance Mapping, using a
discrete surface as a property surface can lead to a Petrel crash.
WORKAROUND: Use discrete surface attributes.
Imported PetroMod overlay: Gas
content
There are differences in the definition of gas content in Petrel
(mass/mass) and PetroMod (volume/mass) resulting in the wrong
visualization of the overlay. Do not use this overlay.
Templates and units for
"Temperature/Heat capacity" data
Petrel and PetroMod used different templates and units for
"Temperature/Heat capacity" data. When PetroMod overlay data was
imported using "Convert to simple grid in the 2012.1 release, units
were incorrectly converted. This is still an issue when you open
overlays which were imported using 2012.1 versions, even with the
2012.2 or 2013.1 version installed.
WORKAROUND: Re-import any overlays that were previously imported.

Fracture Modeling
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Large 3D grids
An observation grid (reservoir grid) with more than one million cells
will take approximately 10 minutes to compute during the Generate
Fracture Driver process.
Fold related fractures
Models with fold-related fractures cannot give coherent results since
the methodology is based on fault-related fractures.

Well Design
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Well plan display in an
intersection window
If an Intersection window is associated with a curved surface, the
display result of certain plans might be incorrect.
Converting a simple proposed
well to an advanced plan
A simple proposed well is created with Well path design by
manually digitizing the design points. When converting a simple
proposed well to an advanced plan, the design points will be converted
into Station points in the advanced plan.
If you click Go to surface or add any curve section to the top in
Well path designer, for the Station points, only MD, INCL and
AZIM values will remain unchanged during calculation, but X, Y,
Z and TVD will be recalculated.
If the last point of the simple well (TD) is above MSL, the
conversion will fail due to TVD and MD being referenced to MSL
instead of to Kelly Bushing (KB).
WORKAROUND: Edit settings for the proposed well by changing from
simple well to standalone well with appropriate KB value.
Associating a side track to a well When assigning a branch to a main well during the sidetrack creation
workflow, the trajectory of the main well (parent) and the branch
(sidetrack) must be within 1m. Otherwise, the assignment will fail.
Well path creation with non S-3D
profile
The system automatically converts any non S-section (profile) into an
S-3D profile when you click on that section in a 3D window and in well
path design Pick/Dragger mode. The conversion will display in the
Well path designer spreadsheet as empty rows. Those rows will be
filled up when modified with the dragger.
WORKAROUND: Click the Undo button and return to the Well path
designer.
Plan grid convergence values
In the 2012.1 release, if a project was set up with mixed units, the grid
convergence for the plan might be calculated incorrectly. This issue
was fixed in the 2012.2 release. However, if a project is saved with the
2012.1 version and is opened with any newer version, an incorrect grid
convergence will occur.
WORKAROUND: To correct this, you must trigger a plan recalculation
by editing the plan (with Well path designer, dragger or Inspector) in a
3D window.
Transferring data over different
index ranges
For some particular data sets, when one incoming log in the server
contains multiple passes of data over different index ranges, if the
deeper data range is downloaded before the shallower or earlier data
range, the shallower or earlier data might be skipped during data
transfer. For more details, see the online help.

Production
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Flow correlation data matching
When the simulation fails to converge, the optimization algorithm will
stop rather than continue solving the remaining algorithms. The user
must remove the failing flow correlation and rerun the case.

Well Deliverability
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Different TVD for Deviated Wells
in Petrel vs. PIPESIM
Petrel and PIPESIM use different algorithms to calculate true vertical
depth (TVD). As a result, when you import a deviated well from
PIPESIM to Petrel, the TVD values will be slightly different in the two
applications. Petrel imports Measured Depth (MD) values exactly as
they are in PIPESIM, but Petrel uses a more advanced algorithm that
allows for curved paths. True vertical depth is then derived from the
MD values.
WORKAROUND: If you want your TVD values in Petrel to match the
same well in PIPESIM, after importing the well from PIPESIM, you can
export the well deviation data, then manually correct (key-in) the TVD
values in the deviation file, then re-import the deviation values. This
effectively forces the TVD values rather than deriving them from the
MD values.
Studio
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Re-parented 3D interpretations
Displayed in Find

In Find, when you display an indexed 3D interpretation that was
re-parented to a survey with a different geometry, Find only displays
the surveys bounding polygon.
