WIN AN IPAD!
Everyone loves a Win-Win situaton! So, here
is your opportunity to be involved in one. We recently
discovered that non-proft companies can add a Donate
buton to their Facebook page. Followers can click the
buton and follow a few simple steps to make a safe and
secure donaton. We decided to add the Donate buton
to our Facebook page and, rather than just tell people to donate, we decided to give
away an IPad to one of our lucky donors. So, untl July 25, for every $20 donated on our
Facebook page, you will receive one entry into a drawing for an IPad Mini! Its a Win-Win
situaton. Extra Mile Student Center wins because people will see how easy it is to donate
through Facebook. You win because you get to support a great cause while also having
the possibility of winning a new IPad Mini! Win-Win! Its that easy! Just go to Extra Mile
Student Center page on Facebook and click the Donate tab.

GLANCING AHEAD
With all of the busyness of summer programs keeping us moving from one thing

Success Connecton, our tutoring/mentoring program, will start back up in September,
and we will need more volunteer tutor/mentors. Our Online Aucton will take place once
again in November. We are startng to seek donatons for it now.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Everyone has a gif or talent to share with others. Now is the tme for you to start
thinking about where you might be called to use yours. We need people who would be
willing to give an hour or two a week at the front or back counter. At the front counter,
you would greet students and get them checked in. At the back counter, you would
sell snacks and monitor the game room. We also need tutors/mentors for our Success
Connecton program. Tutor/mentors choose either Tuesday or Thursday from 7:00 PM
- 9:00 PM. Tuesday is for 7th and 8th grade students, and Thursday is for high school
students. Many adults dont feel qualifed to do this, but the thing to remember is, Its
not so much about your ability, but your availability! Students need an encourager, a
friend, a listening ear. Will you be the one to make a diference in the life of a student?
Contact the center by phone 882-0363, or email gene@extramilecenter.org to get
more informaton or to get started!
Welcome to July! It may be hot outside, but it is nice and fresh* inside at the Extra Mile Student Center! We have
had an awesome tme with our summer workshops so far this month! Each week seems to grow as the students realize
something is happening. Even though students sign up before the end of the school
year, and we announce our summer workshops at the high school and middle school,
by the tme July rolls around, many of them forget!
However, we have had such great results so far with our frst two workshops.
We are constantly amazed at the hidden talents and abilites that our students
possess. These talents seem to burst forth or ooze out (depending on the student) as
opportunites arise for them to shine! We have truly seen this happening during our
frst two workshops.
July 7
th
we began our Writers Workshop. The workshop is designed to help
spark some ideas, get some of those creatve thoughts fowing, and get them down
on paper. Each student does a variety of short writng pieces, and chooses one that they would like to develop into a longer
writng piece of about 1000 words. Some start faster than others, but each student ended up with a story of at least a 1000
words. Of course, we go through the editng process with each student to help him or her improve and revise his or her work!
The end results were great! Several judges will read their stories, and we will ofer prizes for the top 3 stories!
On July 14
th
, we began our second summer workshop, Garage Band Music.
It was phenomenal! We had enough students to form a couple of small group
bands! Most of the students who partcipated were extremely brave as almost all
of them have never played the instrument they were learning untl Monday (the
14
th
)! It was indeed a noisy week at the Student Center, but it was recognizable
noise! The end results are posted on Facebook! Please check it out! (And like
our page if you havent done that yet!)
Again, we are amazed at the challenges that students are willing to tackle
everyday! We have been impressed with them these past two weeks as they have
listened, learned, and performed!
Of course, NONE of this is possible with just Kathy and Gene! It is truly
a corporate efort! Thanks to all of the wonderful lunch bunch buddies who have brought some delicious meals each day!
Thanks to all those who were willing to help edit, teach, and listen with and to students these past two weeks. Special thanks
to the musicians who spent a whole week tapping and plucking out notes! What awesome teachers they were! Especially,
thank you to all of you who give; you make the diference!
*Fresh is the word that our Hispanic students use when they walk into our air conditoning from the outside heat. Instead of saying, Its cool in
here! They always say, Its fresh in here! Another interestng diference between Spanish and English. :)

JULY 2014
July isnt over yet! And neither are our summer workshops! Monday, July 21
st
, we will start our Art Workshop, Meet
the Masters, with Lisa Brouwer-Thompson from Kennewick. Lisa led our art workshop
last year and is the artst who painted the mural in the entryway of the Student Center.
She lives in Tri-Cites and has painted the walls of many ofces, schools, and homes
all over the Northwest. (You can see her work at The Nakedwall on Facebook). We are
looking forward to the artwork we will be seeing next week!
Finally, the week of July 28
th
, we will have our Photography workshop with Rene
Groom, a photographer/writer from Prosser. Last year we were able to create a calendar
and some blank greetng cards from all the incredible photos the students shot and sell
them as a fundraiser. Be on the lookout for calendars and cards to purchase, which will
highlight the students work! We will let you know when they will be ready to sell!
As always, it takes the eforts of many to make all of these workshops run smoothly! We are stll needing meals for
the last 2 weeks of workshops (workshops go from Monday to Thursday). If you are able and willing to provide lunch for
approximately 15 teens, please call Kathy at 509 840-4877 or call the center at 509 882-0363.
