Background:
Subclause4.4.7.4(includingTable4)ofAPISpec20A,FirstEdition,requiresmicrostructure
analysis for steel cleanliness in accordance with ASTM E45. As there are no industry
acceptancecriteria,itwasagreedthattheresultsneedtobereportedasinformationonly

TechnicalJustificationforRevision:
1. In sample testing of 11 heats of cast carbon steel, the requirements for subclause
4.4.7.4 of API Spec 20A could not be met. There was a 40% failure rate of the sample
tested.
2. Three different foundries were contacted and all three advised they have never made
anycastingstothesubclause4.4.7.4requirementforcleanliness.
3. ASTME45includesthefollowingstatementsregardingapplicability:
4.7Thesetestmethodsareintendedforuseonwroughtmetallicstructures.Whilea
minimum level of deformation is not specified, the test methods are not suitable for
useoncaststructuresoronlightlyworkedstructures.
