When Rosanna Gill

purchased her St. Clair

Shores house in 2005
she paid what she be-
lieved to be market val-
ue for the property.
I think I got a fair
deal on it, she said. It
was the biggest invest-
ment I ever made and I
thought I was really
making a smart invest-
ment.
Within three years,
Gills investment turned
sour.
I had a house that
was worth less than half
what I even owed on it,
Gill said. I was getting
married in 2009 and
wanted to move to a big-
ger house. I couldnt
even dream of that
then.
Gills story is anything
but unique to the city,
but the commonality of
her tale did little to help
her get out of her house.
I didnt want to just
up and leave, she said.
I saw neighbors doing
that, friends, and at
times I thought it even
made sense to do that.
She didnt.
Instead, she and her
new husband, Randall,
decided to stick out the
tough housing market
with the hopes that
there might be light on
the other side of the tun-
nel.
According to recent
statistics, that light has
arrived.
According to recent
RealComp II Ltd. fig-
ures, the number of
houses listed on the
market took a drastic
jump between June
2013 and June 2014, in-
creasing by nearly 30
percent.
The median sale price
in Macomb County, St.
Clair Shores included,
rose from $105,000 to

Seven days after torrential rains turned many city
streets into swimming pools and basements into ponds,
Mother Nature opened up the skies again Monday
night, dumping several more inches on the city in a
span of just a few hours, recreating the floods and trou-
bles that plagued the city just a week earlier.
This is crazy, St. Clair Shores resident Cindy
Mueller said, standing outside a local party store as the
water rose on Greater Mack just north of 9 Mile. Im
stranded here because of the water, and Im not any-
where near the lake. Its nuts.
According to the National Weather Service, Detroit
City Airport saw nearly five inches of rain Monday eve-
ning between rush hour and 7 p.m., an amount that tax-
es the system and acts as an impetus for widespread
street flooding and for many residents, the streets
were only the start of the problem.
Ive got three inches of water in my basement,
again, Donald Patton said. I just got everything
cleaned up after last week. Then, wham, this happens
and Im back to square one. I havent even had a chance
to bring somebody in yet.
Residents took to the citys Facebook page, with doz-
ens posting pictures and comments regarding base-
ment flooding and streets completely submerged.
I talked to five of my neighbors, Patton said. All of
them have water and sewage in their basements. Ive
been here 16 years and never had a drop of water. Now,
twice in one week.
Councilman Pete Rubino posted all the citys pumps
were functioning properly, but the amount of rain
overwhelmed the system.
Interim city manager Mike Smith concurred.
All the citys pumps were working, Smith said. Its
just a matter of too much rain in too short a span of
time.
Crews from the citys department of public works
were out in full force, Smith added, saying these crews
were making sure the pumps were operational and jet-
ting out the drain lines to keep them from clogging, thus
ensuring the water gets out through one of the many
drains and into the lake as quickly as possible.
Given the conditions across metro-Detroit, Smith
said. The fact that all of our water is down speaks vol-
umes for how hard our guys worked last night.
Smith is right.
The rainfall prompted freeway shutdowns all over
the area, motorists were trapped in cars, basements and
streets were reported to be flooded in many local com-
munities, and in neighboring Roseville, the flooding
was so bad that manhole covers were being lifted off
their holes, prompting Roseville officials to warn people
about walking across flooded streets for fear they might
fall in four such rescues were performed by Roseville
police and fire.
At the end of the day, it was just a lot of water, Smith
said. Its like pouring 40 gallons of water into a cup. Its
just not going to go.

Im just so grate-
ful, South Lake
Public Schools
Superintendent
Pamela Balint said.
To the voters, the
parents, everyone
who had confidence
in us and in our dis-
trict. Everyone is
just thrilled and
grateful, very grate-
ful.
Balints enthusi-
asm stems from the
narrow passing of
the districts bond
proposal.
I voted yes,
Sharon Cuthbert,
who has children
who are not yet old
enough for school,
said. I did because I
believe that good
schools are impor-
tant to a good com-
munity.
The proposals
success at the polls
was a vital step for
the district, Balint
admitted, but the
reach spans beyond
South Lake she said.
Strong schools
help property val-
ues, they help the
entire community,
Balint explained. I
think this outcome
is important to
South Lake, to the
city of St. Clair
Shores and to the
southern end of
Macomb County. I
believe this. I really
do.
The road to pass-
ing this proposal,
which paves the way
for a plethora of
projects within the
district in the com-
ing years. Projects
range from new
roofs, upgrades to
security and tech-
nology, upgrades to
bathrooms, an over-
haul of the districts
athletic complex
and more, was a
long and challeng-
ing one for Balint
and a host of sup-
porters.
We started back
in March or April,
she said. And thats
when we decided
that we had to be
completely trans-
parent and honest.
We wanted to get as
much information
out there are we
possibly could about
this bond, and what
it would mean to the
district, the students
and the communi-

getting the word out, re-
sponding to residents
questions and getting
the correct information
to voters.
We didnt want mis-
conceptions and rumors
out there, Balint said.
That was important.
Theres always a fear that
the information will be
misinterpresented and
difficult to understand.
We didnt want that to be
the case. We wanted to be
honest and then let voters
decide based on the cor-
rect information.
The voters did decide,
and with the passing of
the $25.5 bond, South
Lake can move forward.
This is important to
the district to be able to
move forward, Balint
said. Im just in awe of
the voters and the par-
ents who recognized
this. This is not only go-
ing to benefit current
students in the district,
but also future students.
I, and everyone here at
South Lake, feel a huge
sense of commitment,
gratitude and responsi-
bility to give these par-
ents, to give this com-
munity, the best district
possible for their kids.
The bond, which adds
0.49 mills to the tax roll,
is slated to be paid off
over a span of about 35
years.
Money isnt just
dropped into an ac-
count, however.
The process takes
time, but Balint and her
staff are already putting
the wheels in motion.
Were going to sit
down with architects
very, very shortly,
Balint said. And thats
when we are going to
develop a timeline for
these improvements.
Once we do that, we will
let everyone know what
that timeline is.
$123,000 (a 17 percent
increase) over that same
time period.
Local Real Estate One
realtor, Eric Goosen,
can attest to the turn in
the market through
firsthand experience.
Goosen is one of nu-
merous agents in the
t renches of t he
housing market.
They are on the re-
bound, he said. And
they seem to be up 10-
15 percent over last
year.
Foreclosed homes in
the city, for example,
Goosen said, that sold
for $70,000 to $80,000
18 months ago, are now
on the market for up-
wards of $90,000 to
$100,000.
St. Clair Shores has
been, and continues to
be, a very favorable
market, he explained.
Its a great location and
it has access to free-
ways, to downtown and
it has, of course, the
lake. It also has great
restaurants and other
destinations. Its a very
attractive place for first-
time homebuyers espe-
cially.
Goosen added that the
recovery comes on the
heels of very tough
times for many city
homeowners in terms of
home values.
It really bottomed
out in 2011 or 2012,
Goosen said. After that,
it seemed to start to re-
cover in 2013 and thats
continued in 2014.
For a while it was
frantic, he said, thanks
to a shortage of houses
for sale and a plethora
of potential buyers
Some homes are see-
ing multiple offers, he
said. Theres just a
strong demand and a
low supply. This even
adds to the appreciation
of the houses that are
for sale. But, it still has
to be priced right.
The pace has started
to slow, but the trend is
still favorable for home-
owners in the city.
The pace is tapering
off some now, Goosen
explained. But I would
expect properties to ap-
preciate between 3-5
percent every year.
For the Gills, theyre
going to stay put in their
south-end house.
We like it here. Its
home for us, Gill said.
Im still not sure we
could get what we owe,
but were a lot closer to
that number than we
were a few years ago.
Weve got a son starting
school in two years and
we like the schools here.
So, I think were here for
a while. But, its nice to
know that the home I
bought as an investment
is starting to go in the
right direction.

The first mission the

barked the aircraft, a
truck pulled up alongside
the aircraft and several
airmen from the 86th
Aeromedical Evacuation
Squadron strategically
unloaded medical equip-
ment from the vehicle
and onto the tanker.
With all equipment and
crew on board, the air-
craft departed. Once in
the air, airmen from the
86th AES talked through
various medical scenarios
and KC-135 statistics.
For some of our air-
men, it was their first
flight on a KC-135,
Dahlberg said. We
walked around and dis-
cussed the aircrafts elec-
trical and oxygen sys-
tems, along with emer-
gency exits.
After the familiariza-
tion overview, the train-
ing was suspended due to
aerial refueling.
We offloaded 10,000
pounds of fuel to eight

Clark said.

Afterward, the aircraft
returned to Ramstein AB
to exchange the in-flight

equipment for another
group of travelers and
their luggage to RAF
Mildenhall.
Were a worldwide
asset. We can go any-
where, anytime, due to
our extremely efficient,
fast and versatile aircraft,
Clark said. Whether sup-
porting medical evacua-
tions or in-flight refueling,
were ready to support
any mission.
As the sun began its fi-
nal descent for the day, so
did the KC-135.
The aircraft tires
screeched as the rubber
met the pavement.
The timeworn tanker
trembled as the reverse
thrusters engaged.
At its final destination,
passengers departed as
the aircrew began their
post-flight checks.
Once the aircraft was
buttoned up, the crew
wound down and headed
home to relax and prepare
for their next mission.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 2014 ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION 7A
The numbers are stag-
gering considering there
is no giant promotional
budget or extravagant
marketing campaign.
The librarys Summer
Reading Club, however,
reached new heights this
year, signing up 1,161
children to the program.
Its impressive, youth
services librarian Becky
Deliso said. Its the big-
gest number weve had in
the program in a very
long time.
The hugely successful
program is a staple in the
city and encourages chil-
dren of all ages to read, or
be read to, throughout the
summer months.
Weekly parties, known
as Terrific Tuesdays,
along with prizes, are
used at motivation, inspi-
ration and reward to the
readers.
The kids really enjoy
being a part of it, Deliso
said. We see them so ex-
cited about it, and the
books theyre reading or
are going to read. Its
great.
Without help, however,
the program would never
get off the ground, Deliso
said.
We have teen volun-
teers come in and help
with the program, she
said. Theres about 30 all
together, some are mem-
bers of our Teen Advisory
Board, many are not.
Either way, without these
teens helping out, it just
wouldnt happen at all.
They are very important.
Deliso said many of the
partipants come from sur-
rounding communities,
not just St. Clair Shores.
We do get kids from
places other than St. Clair
Shores, she said. But the
majority are from here in
the city. Theres a real
commitment to reading in
the city here. Thats a
great thing.
There isnt a tally kept
on the number of books
read by reading club
members, although par-
ticipants do have logs that
keep track of the amount
of time they spend read-
ing over the course of the
week, but its a whole
lot, Deliso said.
Were all really happy
and really excited about
how this year went, she
said.

SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 2014
2014 Dodge Journey
Crossroad
T
his week, were driving the
2014 Dodge Journey, a mid-
size crossover first intro-
duced in 2009 entry
price: $19,995; price as test-
ed: $29,030.
Available in seven trims, pricing starts
at $19,995 for the American Value
Package to one of the upperclass trims
such as our Crossroad tester, which came
in at a base of $24,995.
Available as a five or seven passenger
vehicle, consumers will be drawn to the
low cost AVP for obvious reasons. Under
the hood sits a 173 horsepower, 166
pound-feet of torque 2.4-liter four-cylin-
der coupled to a four-speed automatic
transmission. The use of a four-speed
these days is surprising considering
Chryslers leadership in multi-speed
transmissions. Granted, I know a nine-
speed automatic coupled to a four-cylin-
der wont return any real value, but per-
haps a six-speed might help with the ac-
celeration a bit when fully loaded.
The seven Journey models available
are the four-cylinder front drive AVP,
$19,995, front-drive only; SE, $21,995;
SXT, $23,295; and SXT Plus, $24,29. All
of these Journeys deliver 19 city and 26
highway, which isnt bad considering its
size and weight.
Each of the four-cylinder Journeys,
sans the American Value model and the
SXT Plus, can be fitted with 4x4 mechan-
icals for $1,500 to $1,850 more, a move
which also adds the V6 engine. Front-
drive Journeys that come with the V6 and
six speed automatic as standard include
Limited, $28,395; and R/T, $28,995.
Our tester, however, is the seventh dis-
tinct Journey available, and its also the
one we feel is the best of the bunch with a
$24,995 entry for the four cylinder and
$28,395 for the 4x4. Its called Journey
Crossroad and is actually an SXT Plus
with numerous enhanced features.
Our Crossroad arrived in 4x4 format
powered by Chryslers Pentstar V6 cou-
pled to a proven six-speed automatic.
The only options were a $145 tow pack-
age and $995 for Navigation with a back-
up camera.
Notable is for $705 more than the
$24,290 SXT Plus, Crossroad delivers a
more enterprising exterior design, re-
fined interior, gloss black grille, black be-
zel headlamps and tail lamps, platinum

Design cues to the Journey
Crossroad give it a distinct
look in the lineup, including a
front fascia with a platinum
chrome accent, gloss black
grille, fog lamp surrounds,
platinum chrome roof rails
and extended side sills, black
headlamp bezels, gloss black
tail lamp bezels and a new
lower rear fascia finished in
platinum chrome and a
Crossroad badge on the tail-
gate. Journey Crossroad also
features 19-inch hyper black
five-spoke aluminum wheels.

chrome roof rails and front/rear fascias with platinum
chrome accents, 19-inch hyper black aluminum wheels
and 225/55R19 All-Season Touring Tires. Inside, leath-
er-trimmed seats with sport mesh inserts and light slate
gray accent stitching is standard, as are black leather-
wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, light slate gray
accent stitching on the center console armrest, liquid
graphite accent on the IP, gauge cluster, center console
and much more. Your dealer is waiting to explain.
Since Journey can seat up to seven passengers, the
283-horse, 260-torque Pentstar V6 is the better choice.
With an EPA rating of 16/24 for the 4x4s, we bettered
Journeys expected highway mileage on a business
trip, coming in at 25.5 on mostly turnpike driving.
Inside, Crossroad takes good care of driver and pas-
sengers, with a major dose of soft materials instead of
plastic. Additionally theres lots of room, thanks to stor-
age bins under the seats and even the front passenger
seat folds down. Making cargo room is an area where
Chrysler engineers always excel. Additionally, every
safety item is standard across the board, from 4-wheel
ABS discs to all traction control features and air bags
expected. The stereo is great, too, with a Sirius/CD six-
speaker Uconnect system with touch screen the stan-
dard fare.
Journey may not be the best in class overall, but it has
won its share of awards, including Wards 10 Best
Engines for the V6 and a Strategic Vision award for
Most Improved Vehicle In Class.
Overall, Journey is a good looking vehicle regardless
of trim, and even the outdated four-speed transmission
can be overlooked by those working on a tight budget.
Every Journey buyer receives a roomy, capable mid-
size Crossover that will deliver good fuel mileage and
go more than 500 miles on a tank full of gas.
Important numbers include a wheelbase of 113.8
inches, 21.1-gallon fuel tank, up to 67.6 cubic feet of car-
go space with all seats folded, 4,238-pound curb weight,
7.4-inch ground clearance and a 2,500-pound tow ca-
pacity.
Likes: Interior/exterior design, cargo space, suspen-
sion, quiet ride, top value.
Dislikes: Rear safety camera not available until you
get to SXT Plus, outdated four-speed automatic.
