Various measures including material experiments, centrifuge modeling tests and FEM numerical analyses were performed to study systematically the action mechanism of the geotextile-reinforced cushion under breakwater on soft ground and the effects of the strata characterization and the reinforcement condition on the stability of the breakwater-ground system. n the aspect of controlling the deformation, the geotextile-reinforced cushion under breakwater constrains the lateral displacement of both the embankment and the ground. From the !iewpoint of stress, the reinforcement suppressed the range of high stress le!el in the system. n general, the weaker the ground is and the greater the modulus of the geotextile is, the more effecti!e the reinforcement is. "his has resulted in a complex soil layering underneath the northern part of the new western breakwater with locally !ery thick soft soil layers. 0s an alternati!e for an expensi!e soil remediation, a !ery strong geotextile was included into the breakwater core, reinforcing the structure. n addition a staged construction was necessary, allowing the soft layers to consolidate and pre!enting undrained failure during construction. .ecause of the complexity of the situation, a numerical model was used to get an estimate of the settlements and the consolidation process during and after construction of the breakwater. Extensi!e field measurements of the settlements were performed during construction and are still performed at this moment 1early '&*23. 4omparison of the settlement measurements with the calculations results in a better understanding of the consolidation process and allows impro!ement of the model, resulting in a more accurate settlement 1and thus consolidation3 prediction cur!e. .ecause of the impro!ed insight in the consolidation of the soft layer, a substantial gain in the progress of the construction of the dam is achie!ed. "his paper shows, based on a case study of a breakwater constructed on soft soil, that existing models used to predict settlements can be impro!ed using field data, leading to a clear benefit regarding the construction phasing. http#$$cedb.asce.org$cgi$555display.cgi62*+&77 "eos#nthetics and "eos#stems in $#draulic and %oastal &ngineering http'((www)crcpress)com(product(isbn(*+,*-.,-*/-0,
