This standard is a revision of A#*I +(.0&'199(. It reflects s0all editorial changes needed to coordinate $ith the
final $ording contained in the defining standards A#*I/IEEE +(.03'1999 and A#*I/IEEE +(.09'1999. *o0e
ratings have also /een updated. 1ecause this revision is pri0aril, editorial in nature, this 8ore$ord descri/es the
su/stantive and editorial changes /et$een this revision and the 192( version. The for0at of the ta/les re0ains ver,
0uch the sa0e, e5cept that so0e ratings, $hich had /een given in the notes 6so0eti0es on a different page fro0
the ta/le of preferred ratings7, have /een listed e5plicitl, in the ta/les.
The trans0ission voltage classes of 1.1 "9, 1&9 "9, and .3. "9 have /een changed to 1. "9, 1(0 "9, and .35 "9
respectivel, to co0plete the har0oni:ation $ith IE+. This har0oni:ation $as /egun $hen IE+ adopted 550 "9 and
200 "9, replacing 5.5 "9 and (&5 "9 respectivel,.
Editorial revisions in Ta/les 1, ., and ;
The individual lines and colu0ns have /een identified $ith nu0/ers for eas, reference. The preferred ratings for
transient recover, voltage 0a5i0u0 rated pea" voltage E. value, have /een 0oved fro0 the notes to the ta/le itself
for ta/les 1 and .. *i0ilarl,, the 0a5i0u0 per0issi/le tripping dela, value 6%7 has /een 0oved fro0 the notes to the
ta/le itself for ta/les 1, ., and . The 0a5i0u0 s,00etrical interrupting capa/ilit, is no longer listed e5plicitl, in the
ta/les since it is no$ nu0ericall, e<ual to the rated short'circuit current 6=>1.07. 8urther, the short'ti0e current rating
is also e<ual to the short'circuit current rating, /ut it is included in the title of +ol. 3 in the ta/les. The closing and
latching current is no$ listed as a rating 6it had /een a related re<uired capa/ilit,7, and the preferred ratings 6"A,
pea"7 have /een calculated at ..& ti0es the rated short'circuit current. This has /een reduced fro0 ..( ti0es in the
192( edition to pro0ote har0oni:ation $ith other international standards. 6If e5pressed in ter0s of r0s total current,
0o0entar, current, the e<uivalent value of the closing and latching current is 1.55 ti0es the rated short'circuit
current.7
Throughout this docu0ent, the ter0 traditionall, associated $ith the 0a5i0u0 value of transient or periodic $ave
for0, ?pea"? is used.
.a(le /@The 0aAor revision in the ratings for indoor circuit /rea"ers is that the preferred values for the rated voltage
range factor = have /een set to 1.0 for all indoor circuit /rea"er ratings. The principal reason for this change is that
the capa/ilities of toda,Bs circuit /rea"er designs are /etter descri/ed /, the =>1.0 value. The user $ill note that an
additional /enefit to the =>1.0 s,ste0 is that the nu0/er of notes in Ta/le 1 are reduced /, half.
This change in no $a, affects the ratings and capa/ilities of circuit /rea"ers 0anufactured and tested to the ratings in
the 192( edition, $hich should continue to /e applied in accordance $ith the 192( standards. 8or convenience,
Ta/les 1 and 1A of the 192( edition are reproduced in this standard as ta/les A1 and A1A. Curing a transition period
fro0 the previous ratings /asis 6=D1.07 to the ne$ ratings /asis 6=>1.07, the industr, can still use the previous
revision of the ta/les in applications $here the, are 0ore convenient.
Eated ti0e'to'pea" 6T.7 values for transient recover, voltage 6TE97 have /een specified for the first ti0e. The values
are those reco00ended /, the IEEE *$itchgear +o00itteeBs $or"ing group on transient recover, voltages, and are
consistent $ith the values given in IE+ 5& su/'clause 3.10... 6#ote; 8or the 1'cosine standard $avefor0 envelope,

6T.7 for 6general purpose7 circuit /rea"ers, are /ased on assu0ption that there is sufficient circuit capacitance to li0it
the prospective TE9 rise ti0e to a value slo$er than that specified. #ote 3 recogni:es that there are applications,
such as for transfor0er secondar, fault protection, $here the circuit capacitance 0a, /e 0uch less, so that the

Gines have /een added for the ne$ .( "9 voltage class, and the .000 revision adds the & "A rating at 15 "9. The
preferred short'circuit ratings at 2 "9 have /een updated to reflect the interrupting capa/ilities of present circuit
/rea"er technologies.
.a(le /A#+a/le charging current has replaced overhead line current /ecause 0ost indoor circuit /rea"ers are
connected to their load circuits /, ca/les rather than overhead lines. +a/les t,picall, have 0uch greater capacitance
than overhead lines and, therefore, nor0all, dra$ so0e$hat greater currents. Also, capacitance current ratings have
/een added for the .( "9 class, and the capacitance current ratings have /een revised for the 2 "9 class. The
preferred capacitance current s$itching ratings in Ta/le 1A $ere chosen to /e consistent $ith present values in Ta/le
.A for outdoor circuit /rea"ers. The & "A rating has /een added at 15 "9 in the .000 revision.
.a(le 2#Editorial revisions si0ilar to those in Ta/le 1 have /een 0ade. The TE9 rated rate and rated dela, colu0ns
6$hich had /een /lan"7 have /een deleted /ecause the, are not applica/le to the t$o para0eter 61'cosine7 TE9
envelope for circuit /rea"ers rated (..5 "9 and /elo$.
.a(le 2A@Hnl, 0inor editorial changes have /een 0ade.
.a(le 3#Editorial revisions si0ilar to those in Ta/le 1 have /een 0ade. In addition, in the .000 revision, rated TE9
rate has /een revised to ..0 "901msec to har0oni:e $ith IE+. Also in the .000 revision, the list of preferred ratings has
/een e5panded, and so0e historic lo$er ratings have /een eli0inated.
.a(le 3A@8or /ac"'to'/ac" capacitor s$itching applications, preferred ratings for inrush current pea" and fre<uenc,
have /een specified for 550 "9 circuit /rea"ers, and 0inor editorial changes have /een 0ade. Additional changes
have /een 0ade in the .000 revision to coordinate $ith Ta/le changes.
.a(le 2#The interrupter full $ave $ithstand $as re0oved in the 199( version, /ut reinstated 6as a note7 in the .000
revision. #e$ ratings for .( "9 indoor /rea"ers $ere added, and 0inor editorial changes $ere 0ade in the 199(
revision. In .000, creepage distances have /een revised to coordinate $ith A#*I/IEEE +(.010, and 1msec
$ithstand re<uire0ents have /een deleted.
.a(le 3#The interrupter full $ave $ithstand is re0oved. A fe$ 0inor editorial changes have /een 0ade.
.a(le 6#8igure 1 fro0 the 192( version $as replaced /, figures A1 and A. in the 199( version. As these TE9
envelope curves have no$ /een added to A#*I/IEEE +(.03, these figures have /een eli0inated in the .000
revision.
.a(le 7#The ta/le has /een revised to reflect the characteristics of 0odern circuit /rea"ers. Ta/le ( fro0 the 192(
version /eca0e Ta/le A. in the 199( version. Ta/le ( fro0 the 199( version had /een Ta/le 2 in the 192( version.
.a(le 4#Editorial revisions onl, have /een 0ade. Ihile control voltages are usuall, identified /, their ?no0inal?
values, the li0its /et$een $hich control voltage can range are specified in ter0s of the ?Eated Eange,? that is, the
0ini0u0 and 0a5i0u0 values. Ta/le 2 fro0 the 199( version had /een Ta/le 9 in the 192( version.
.a(le 5#The ta/le has /een revised to reflect the characteristics of 0odern circuit /rea"ers. Ta/le 9 fro0 the 199(
version had /een Ta/le 10 in the 192( version.
A''endi6@8or the convenience of those users $ho $ill /e appl,ing indoor circuit /rea"ers $ith a rated voltage
