I. Prologue
Present time
Whenever we imagine it, it seems to be beyond reality as we
know it. Wishful thinking makes us hope that we be extinct long
before the day ever arrives. Some imagine the doomsday through a
nuclear war, some through another ice age. The environmentalist
talk of Greenhouse effect and resource depletion, the religious
fanatics speak of Gods hand. But is the doomsday really such a
hypothetical concept? What if the sun is extinguished in one swift
hand of God or rather a creature of God. Every day we hear
conspiracy theorists explaining in details how the governments of
the world are actually planning the downfall of the millions of
humans. Bio engineered warfare, fusion energy weapons, artificial
intelligence replacing humans, so many ways are there to eliminate
man or to bog down his significance on the face of the earth or in
the eyes of God. What if God preordained the doomsday and wrote
it down to one event or handed the responsibility to one creature?
It sounds preposterous that one creature could bring about the
downfall of an entire planet, an entire ecosystem but why not? If
Man can destroy the habitat of other creatures to display his own
power and accomplishments why does it feel that he would not be
subject to the same when a more powerful creature decides to visit
earth?
5 Ana Bennette 2014

God is a myth or perhaps the all encompassing reality, but
whatever be God, the concept, has made provisions for every
situation. The Revelations talk of the Angels coming down to earth
to destroy those who are not of God. What if the angels do not
come from God but from somewhere far away?
It all started as a scientific expedition. A celestial artefact had
been found at a meteor site. Scientists of the world joined hands to
decipher engravings on the artefacts. That artefact was in reality a
beacon and an inter-dimensional teleporter that brought doomsday
closer than it was ever before. The Angel of death and darkness
had come down on earth and his passage through the earthly
realms had been assisted by mortals. With the dark angel came
fumes of darkness that engulfed space and light. Everywhere there
was mayhem as people ran for their lives with nowhere to run to.
The darkness had by then submerged the horizon into perpetual
gloom. The sun rarely managed to peep onto the mortals below
through the thick cloud of smoke that remained due to Angel's
prolonged stay on earth. Man killed man in an attempt to flee but
failed. There was fear and hopelessness everywhere and that
hopelessness fuelled the darkness that surrounded the earth. It
spread like a toxic gas in tiny tendrils and fed on the negativity of
the people. Soon sunlight was hard to come by. The darkness was
suffocating. People started to die in their sleep as fear engulfed
them. Mundane life came to a standstill. Most of the people lost
6 Ana Bennette 2014

their eyesight due to the absence of light and that absolute
blindness brought on rage. Vandalism and riots became rampant
throughout the world. Then the blizzards started, ice cold winds
brought snow that seemed like frozen blood in all the darkness.
The energy reserves of all the nations on earth were fast depleting
just to keep the inhabitants warm and sane. Only a small group of
people struggled on to find light. The scientists that had once
summoned the doom now fought on to avert it. They had little to
go by but they had their will which was a strong light to reckon
with. With them they had the will to live on and the faith in
redemption.
The battle was finally at hand when the mortals faced the
immortal. Samael, the Dark Angel brought no army with him for
he fancied that he needed none. He knew that the coward that man
was would fall at his feet at the slightest sign of complete
annihilation. He wasn't completely right. The battlefield that
greeted the Dark angel was in reality an abandoned football field.
All the lights in the field were full ablaze; the light intended to
weaken the alien. However none of it was any match for the
creature who controlled darkness. One by one all the stadium lights
started going out. Chaos ensued among the ranks. The leader of the
army tried to bring back order but he knew that fear was a weapon
of the dark. He would very soon lose the men that succumbed to it.
Suddenly the black smoke slithered along the now brown grass of
7 Ana Bennette 2014

the field and Samael appeared before them. As soon as the dark
winged creature took shape from the smoke the cowards in the
troops broke rank and fled for the exit. Away from the assembly of
the mortal army the darkness caught up to them and suffocated
them. The General saw his men suffocate in their own fears. His
jaws twitched. Nothing was visible save for darkness.
Suddenly lights attached to their helmets lit up. Samael tried
hard to extinguish it but failed. The General took a step towards
the winged creature. Finally Samael recognized the mortal
General. "But how?" he seemed baffled. This creature should have
been lying in a thousand pieces in the middle of a desert if he had
to have his way with it for this was the scientist that had assisted in
his passage into this world. This was the man he had thrown from
over a hundred thousand feet above ground and yet he stood in one
piece in front of him.
"I brought you here Samael; it is time I sent you home"

II. Duty Calls
Six Mont hs back....
It was night outside and the trees held a halo of moonlight
around it. Cassandra was standing in the balcony ready to launch
into the damp night air when she felt the heat and the light of the
flame. It hurt or it was supposed to. She screamed in fright only to
wake up in half transition on her bed. It had been the same
nightmare for the past one week and she saw no reason it should
stop. She was condemned for eternity.
She had a seemingly normal life as a typist in a construction
company run by a man in his late fifties. Mr. Sutherland was
genteel and caring and run by the dictates of his business-minded
wife Clara. She liked Clara because she was not pretty or vain. She
was nice to look at for her age with a round figure and a freckled
oval face. Her brown hair with interwoven greys always tied in a
bun gave the impression of woman content at home but she was
the worldly wise of the couple. When news came of her passing
away in her sleep Cassandra was the person to weep beyond her
senses. She was suffering from a loss, she had lost her sense of
purpose and she for the first time regretted taking on the
assignment she had five years ago.
9 Ana Bennette 2014

Old Mr. Sutherland had stopped living with his wife passing
away. Gossip circulated among the employees of him suffering a
stroke and being paralyzed from neck down. She knew no better
save that his son was to take over. Ray Sutherland was not the sort
of man one would imagine in a construction company. She had
never met him, nor had she seen him with his parents. He was a
mad scientist or so his mother fondly recollected and was
rumoured to be working for NASA. He had however just taken
early retirement at the age of forty six and had agreed to look after
his parents business, of course how he would manage something
so out of his field beat the most out of his employees.
It was a few hours before dawn and she needed to go back to
bed. She needed to look fresh and active for her genius new boss
who would hold the only job she had left in this world now.
Typing letters to his clients or tenders to the suppliers wasnt a
sense of purpose but it paid the bills.
When she opened her eyes she cursed herself. She was late for
work. Despite the fact that she had worked in the same company
for the past five years it was like a first day at work with a new
employer. Though Mrs. Sutherland favoured her most the topic of
her enigmatic son was a taboo to be discussed with her. It had
something to do with the fact that he did not approve of her
worldly ways. She had etched up an image of Ray Sutherland in
10 Ana Bennette 2014

her mind which suited his personality perfectly. Medium height
with shaggy brown hair, thick glasses, and a goofy smile dressed in
a knitted sweater and flannel pants. So when she finally wrenched
open the office door and saw her peering into the light blue eyes of
a six foot something blonde haired Greek god she felt her mouth
go dry.
You are late Miss. Angel. He pointed out looking at the ID
card hanging down her neck. So saying he went back to the
motivational speech he had prepared for the staff without missing a
beat. She felt her heart thudding in her chest, both from the fact
that she had climbed eight stories missing the elevator and was in a
hurry, and because she had never seen a more perfect face in her
life. Ray Sutherland was nothing like his parents, didnt look half
his age and he was all man.
As I was saying, I am not a construction person but I have
built many things in my lifetime, most of which are classified
information. However I can tell you that under my instruction
everything you will be doing should be innovative. I do not want
our company to be known for being economical; I want it to be
known for its expertise in what we do. I am a perfectionist and I
settle for nothing less than perfect. So saying, he ended his
speech. She managed to breathe finally and got a word out of her
mouth, Perfect.
11 Ana Bennette 2014

He finished giving instruction to a horde of people who
thronged him, mostly female, before he turned to her. Miss Angel,
do meet me in my office right now. Everyone who surrounded
him turned to her and she felt like digging a hole in the ground and
she could, she definitely could but given the marble flooring and
the seven storeys below it would be a giveaway.
She soon found herself sitting in old Mr. Sutherlands room
which had been completely refurbished. The old dusty cabinets
were gone and so were the ancient computers and printers. What
struck her the most was the amount of light in the room! The
heavily curtained windows were replaced with clear glass. The
dark carpet replaced with cream ones. The man wasnt joking
about going cutting edge. Every appliance in the room was the
latest technology but for a person from NASA perhaps they were
all old fashioned. His voice brought her back to the present and she
noted arrogance in it. The man definitely knew what he was made
of.
You have been working for my father for the past five years
as a typist. I did a background check on all the current employees
and found you have no record whatsoever. May I know, why that
is?
Involuntarily she smiled imagining his expression at knowing
the real reason for her non existence in his world.
12 Ana Bennette 2014

What do you find so amusing Miss Angel?
She was at a loss of word as to what to say. I am not from
around here and my records got lost while coming. She explained.
Could you not obtain duplicates? He asked.
Mr. Sutherland, your father, never asked for them and I
believe now it would be simply a waste of time.
I see, Are you an illegal immigrant?
No I am not. She tried to answer with as much a straight face
as she could manage given the fact that he kept running his long
slender fingers along his upper lip. Boy! Was it distracting!
I do not have a use for a typist Miss Angel. He paused and
leaned back into his chair his brows slightly frowned looking
upward. Cassandra assumed that to be a dismissal and was
contemplating on standing up to leave. Then he looked back at her
and reconsidered. I need a secretary however who is capable of
handling a computer and well versed in the latest technologies. I
have reservations regarding whether you would be suitable for the
job. But since you have worked with my father I find myself
obligated to give you the benefit of the doubt. I myself need time
catching up with the business and I give you one month to get
13 Ana Bennette 2014

acquainted with my ways. You may simultaneously start searching
for a job that may suite you better.
The girl nodded. He had no idea what her capabilities were so
she chose not to take offense at his under-estimation.
Simultaneously she knew it was a good idea to get a job far from
this intimidating man. However she knew herself and knew she
wouldnt be going anywhere. Dr. Sutherland was in for a rude
shock the next morning. Truth is she never enjoyed being
underestimated, not in the world She came from and especially not
here.
The woman straightened herself on the chair let him know of
her approval as he instructed her in her immediate duties, in
arranging his planner to maintaining documents on his desktop,
updating files and typing the required documents. She also had to
perform the calculations and drafting required for his projects.
Are you good with number Miss Angel? He asked.
I am good enough She answered truthfully. She was good
enough for the best of this world.
Do you mind if I time you while you do some calculations?
He was smirking.
She so much wanted to wipe that smirk of his arrogant
handsome face. Sure. Go ahead.
14 Ana Bennette 2014

She saw him program his stopwatch on his multifunction
digital wristwatch which had a holographic projection screen. It
was one of his invented prototypes, no doubt as holographic
projectors were not there in the general market yet.
Lets start with simple stuff. What are seven to the power
four?
2401 She answered immediately. It was simple stuff but not
for the general public. Her quick response got him to raise a brow.
What an exquisitely crafted arch it was but she couldnt let it
distract her.
If the market sells an item at twenty percent mark up and if
the selling price exacts a forty percent profit, what is the cost price
of the item if a ten percent discount makes the item available at
$756?
She felt like giving him a direct answer would make him
suspicious so she counted till five before giving her answer. The
cost price is Five hundred dollars. From the expression on his face
she guessed she should have counted till ten.
Why are you here? He asked. She assumed that he took her
for settling below the work of her capacity.
15 Ana Bennette 2014

I am here to work Dr. Sutherland. She assured. He looked
amused but then something flashed in his eyes.
As long as you dont bring to work whatever you are hiding
your talents from, I dont mind having a gifted assistant. I hope
your way with computers is as good as your way with numbers. I
warn you I keep long hours and may even work weekends so you
wont have much respite from me if you want. Now if you would
like to take the rest of the day off I will understand but you shall
have no mercy from tomorrow. Do I make myself clear? There
was something in his words that penetrated her bones. Was it his
gaze or his voice she did not know but his last question snapped
her out of her distraction. Crystal She managed to say.
The next morning she chose to dress differently. She wore a
knee length summer dress with high heels. She tied back her waist
long honey blonde hair in a plait and tried to be as refined and
sophisticated as possible. She reached earlier than usual and took
her seat hoping to finish a part of the backlog before her boss
arrived. She had actually been the only employee in the office at
that hour in the morning. She was dismayed to find him sauntering
into the office with a cup of coffee in hand and a file in another.
When he saw her at the computer his face lit up like that of a child
on receiving his favourite toy from Santa Claus. If I knew you
would be on time I would have got you a coffee. She wondered
16 Ana Bennette 2014

what his on time meant as it was clearly an hour and a half before
anyone else would show up through the office door. Gratefully Dr.
Sutherland was busy pouring into his file and she was busy
updating the files on the office desktop. By the time that she
finished and looked up she realized her bosss gaze burning
through her skin. She turned to face him to see his files closed in
front. It is lunch time. Want to come with me? During lunch Ray
Sutherland was more animated than she had ever seen him before.
He explained his plans with the company and what his projections
for progress were. To her he sounded overconfident but somehow
she knew that the man didnt need to bluff. He was aggressive
about what he wanted and he knew how to get it.
The day ended much later. The entire office was vacant save
for the security. Ray Sutherland finally got up to go and she
realized that this was going to be her daily routine of life from now
on. Not that she complained or regretted missing out on some
social life which she did not have, still spending from dusk to
dawn with a whimsical boss with electric currents running between
the two is not healthy, especially when you belong to two different
species from across dimensions. By the end of the first day she
knew she had it bad for Ray Sutherland. By the end of the month
she ensured that nothing could get worse.
17 Ana Bennette 2014

III. Opening the Gates
Two months later
Stanley was worried. His partner was always a workaholic but
he never worked himself to death. Ray Sutherland was getting
worse by the day. Project Black Star was a dead end. It seemed
like a bad joke played on them. If it was proven to be authentic it
could be the first recorded extraterrestrial lithography. However
the energy signal that it continued to give off was the reason that
they were there, working their bones off in the desert with the
piece of black unknown metal.
General Windsor was in-charge of the research facility and
supervised the works regarding Project Black Star. Though not a
genius when it came to science he had his fair share of MITs and
research in various fields. Ray Sutherland and Stanley Pfeiffer
were to brief him on their progress. He was a large man with bushy
eyebrows and a fatherly smile. So scientists, how far have you
reached from calling quits on this project.
It was Stanley who spoke. The steady energy signal that
comes from this metal piece is a time varying high frequency
periodic disturbance of the nature of a pulsar radiation. Dr.
Sutherland feels that it may be an intergalactic transmitter. It
18 Ana Bennette 2014

remains to be seen what it transmits. For the last one month we
have studied the nature of the energy disturbance and have tried
our best to reproduce the signal oscillation. That time varying
energy disturbance has been formatted as a laser which we plan to
impinge on the black star. My dear friend believes that the forced
oscillation may be enough to get the transmitter into working
condition.
All this while Ray was busy making adjustments on the
gigantic laser gun assembled to open the intergalactic teleportation
portal that Ray believed was the key to space travel. You couldnt
travel the distance because of speed limitation so why not bend the
distances. If gravity could bend light it could also bend the
distances. Just the force had to be strong enough. And there were
so many instances of strong forces inter atomic and at quark level.
All that was needed was to reproduce that force. If this piece of
alien technology could achieve that there were a limitless number
of possibilities ahead of them and Ray Sutherland would have
etched a place for himself in the history of human progress. He
would then have a place of belonging upon the world.
Love had eluded Ray for most of his life. His parents loved one
another but the love rarely got transferred to the orphan they had
adopted. He had witnessed love for most of his life without getting
the slightest chance of experiencing it. He remembered catching
19 Ana Bennette 2014

his high school sweet heart in bed with his best friend. That
experience had further hardened him towards relationships. Now
he was even more convinced. Maybe he was not destined for love.
But he was destined for immortality.
The laser gun fired up to strike the black star. It was a moment
of great expectation for him. A minute passed, then two. The black
star went on absorbing the laser energy without the slightest of
change. After fifteen minutes the experiment was called off. Ray
couldnt believe that his theories had failed, not that he had plain
proof of what that box was but the energy signal had been so
distinct. As Stanley went to secure the equipment Ray headed
towards the bulls eye where the star was kept. He knew that the
block should be at fusion temperature after absorbing that amount
of energy. Still in his disappointment he did not care. When Ray
absentmindedly reached out to touch the block he did not feel any
heat. Rather he felt cold. The black star was sucking all the energy
into it. Just as he realized that he heard some commotion in the
control room where Stanley and the General was. He turned to
look at the viewing pane on fire. There had been a short circuit in
the equipment. He had to reach the control room to rescue his
friend but before he could move the laser fired again passing
through him to the black star.
20 Ana Bennette 2014

Ray should have undergone spontaneous combustion. He
should have turned to dust or vapor at that extreme temperature.
Instead the laser passed through him without even the slightest
tickle. He stood aside watching the beam of laser as it aimed for
the star. The fire in the control room had consumed the view pane.
Ray turned towards the door that led to the control room when he
heard a louder noise behind him.
When Ray turned to see the star his greatest dreams had been
realized. The portal had opened and dense black smoke came
through. The black smoke was spreading out all around him in thin
tendrils absorbing all the daylight that stood in mid day. Ray could
feel the chill as it spread from the portal. As he watched the
darkness spread he noticed that his line of vision had drastically
reduced. The darkness was not just engulfing light but also matter
and space. Then from the portal stepped out a creature, a man, or
rather a humanoid from whose shoulders spread wide were dark
wings, like that of the raven. On his forehead was a crown of black
thorns. He had black shoulder length hair and pitch black eyes. His
torso was covered with tattoos with writings in the same script as
there were on the black star. He appeared taller than Ray but
leaner and meaner. From his eyes the darkness spread around.
Ray had forgotten to breathe in his fear. He was always afraid
of darkness and this creature was darkness personified. But the
21 Ana Bennette 2014

darkness was closing around him. He couldnt keep his eyes open.
At that moment the laser gun fired again breaking through the
blanket of darkness. Ray looked back to see a half burnt Stanley
manning the laser console. Blood oozed from the burn wounds
over his eyes. Ray decided to make a run for the control room.
Taking the fire extinguisher from beside the entrance he went
upstairs to put out the fire. Ray found the General dead and Stanley
barely alive. The other technicians in the laboratory all lay
unconscious. From the control room Ray could hear the sound of
engines as enforcement reached the research site. Ray also felt the
chill as the cold darkness approached them further.
Ray knew that he had to overcome his fears for the sake of his
friends. He knew he had to take action. Ray supported Stanley
through the back door. An ambulance had arrived equipped with
life support and the rest. Ray instructed the rescue team on the
situation in the control room and with the military guards went to
face the extra terrestrial creature.
The creature had by then managed to disarm the laser and was
air borne. Ray remembered that the light harmed the creature and
he managed to get hold of a concave glass and focused the sunlight
on the creature. That managed to get the creatures attention that
swooped down ready to attack Ray. The military had been told to
be alert to grab the creature as he posed a national or worse, a
22 Ana Bennette 2014

global threat to security. The military latched on to the creatures
legs as the creature latched on to Rays throat.
Thus, all in embrace, the creature took to flight. Ray felt the
chill as the darkness of the creature spread through him but the
creature was moving sunwards and the darkness formed a tail like
that of a comet. Ray barely surfaced above it. But the temperature
started to get cooler and cooler till Ray could feel ice prickling his
skin. He managed to look down through the corner of his eyes and
saw the soldiers gradually lose their grip and fall to their death.
Ray was soaring through the clouds now in the death grip of a
flying monster. Logic told him he should have been dead. Science
told him he should have suffocated by now, his senses should have
failed him and his limbs should have numbed but he was alert and
active. Through his adrenaline rush he finally managed to croak
WhoWhat are you?
I am death. I am darkness. I am Samael. So saying the
creature let go of the grip on his neck and Ray plunged headlong
into the clasp of certain death.
23 Ana Bennette 2014

IV. Sealed With a Kiss
Two mont hs back
It was the same routine starting early and leaving late. On his
word every morning Dr. Sutherland got a cup of coffee for both to
start the day. The man worked like a machine and kept her on her
toes. That was a welcome thing for other than her work her life
was basically empty. The chief reason for that was her restriction
for touch. Dr. Sutherland never asked why she always wore gloves
and she never asked why he never took a day off. Soon she got on
first name basis with him. He called her Cassie instead of
Cassandra and that name on his lips made her stomach clench with
pleasure. Two months later Ray Sutherland asked her to
accompany him to a business meeting in Vegas. She had no way to
refuse.
What are you doing next week Cassie? startled She looked at
him. She replied honestly, I am working for you, boss.
I mean off work. Is there any social engagement you must
attend? he clarified.
Off hours I sleep boss. You exhaust me. She smiled at him.
24 Ana Bennette 2014

He smiled back. Ok. Get your bags packed. We are going to
Las Vegas for a meeting.
Sin City? She asked wide eyed.
Yes. Do you have a problem with that?
Definitely not boss.
What problem could she have save the fact that the
construction company wasnt situated anywhere near that and a
meeting in Vegas meant it had to be related to his previous work.
Also the most gorgeous man on earth was taking her on a trip.
What could she possibly complain about?
Next week started with Cassandra packed and ready waiting
for her boss to pick her up for the airport. He could have given the
flight number and time but that was not how Ray Sutherland
operated. In the airport she got the shock of her life. Not only was
he going to take her on his private jet but Ray Sutherland insisted
on flying. General rule is to have two pilots for navigation but
since its my jet I get to change certain rules. So if you want you
can come and sit with me in the cockpit. He explained. Then he
added You will like the view.
Cassandra had a hard time hiding her expression. It must have
been like the cat that got the cream. She always loved to fly but it
25 Ana Bennette 2014

had been so long that she had been airborne. Ray Sutherland
enjoyed height and speed and it was fun all the way. She had never
seen her boss more alive than in the cockpit of an A321 jet. The
clouds flitted by them and soon they were landing in a large
runway.
The meeting was a top secret government affair and she
wondered what she was doing there when Dr. Sutherland came
knocking on her hotel room. You must be wondering why I
brought you here. He stated.
She gave him an amused look and nodded. There is a party in
the evening in honour of an old friend who is retiring and I needed
a female company for the evening. I dont do relationships so I
thought of bringing you along. I hope you do not mind being my
arm candy for the evening. I brought you some clothes and
jewellery. As soon as he said this a man came in bearing a dress
and a box of jewels.
Cassie looked to find a cream white halter neck dress with a
thigh high slit. The jewellery box contained a very expensive
diamond necklace. She stared at the jewels in awe. She hadnt
dressed so elegantly in the last five years. How did you know
white was my favourite colour? She asked elated.
I didnt. It is mine. He stated and left.
26 Ana Bennette 2014

She got ready to dress and was touched to find matching gloves
along with the dress. Nothing missed that mans eyes. She decided
to keep her hair open. They drove up to the hotel in a stretch
limousine and Ray Sutherland placed the palm of his hand on the
small of her back. If she thought his gaze was burning then
electricity passed at his touch even through the fabric. They
walked up to a middle aged crowd with a few gray heads. Some
had the intimidating mannerism of the military and some were out
and out scientists. They spoke mostly in code and she heard an
animated discussion about a salvaged black star. In curiosity she
asked Ray what that was about. In response he lowered his mouth
to her ears and whispered top secret and then he brushed his
mouth on her cheek. She looked up at him with eyes wide as his
eyes turned a darker shade of blue. Was it her imagination or were
really light bursting from those eyes. She sucked in her breath and
kept quiet. She had never been so intimately touched, not by a
male, not by a human.
That brisk touch of his lips had started a hunger in her she had
never realized feasible. She was surprised at her attraction towards
a human and knew well enough that it would be difficult to control
herself in his presence. When he asked her to dance her heart leapt
to her mouth. She knew it would encompass more physical touch
and more electricity.
27 Ana Bennette 2014

As the evening progressed Ray Sutherland had his arm
wrapped against Cassandra with his hand resting on her bare
shoulder. She didnt know what feelings ran through him but she
could feel sparks everywhere around her. Ray Sutherland took
leave of his company and brought her to her room. She never
asked him to come inside. She knew she couldnt. She was
forbidden to. Standing on the doorway, when the giant of a man
bent down to claim a kiss she couldnt however refuse. With that
kiss she felt the electricity running between them change to
lightning. She knew he felt it too for he also shuddered. It was the
last warning her body would send to him before succumbing to
desire. Ray Sutherland did not pull back. She felt his moist tongue
move against her lips urging her mouth to open. She felt his body
push inside and heard the vague sound of the door closing. When
she parted her lips his tongue swept in to provide a strange sense of
fulfilment. Her mark throbbed against her back wishing for the
mating to be completed, which Ray Sutherland, in his ignorance
commenced.
Cassie vaguely registered the stab of pain as she was
deflowered with abandon. The pain was followed by a thousand
kisses and she drifted to bliss, swept in desire. She felt the rise and
fall of his chest below her but she was too exhausted to care. When
she woke up in the morning naked and lying on top of one heap of
a man did last nights activity truly register. She should have never
28 Ana Bennette 2014

let Ray Sutherland kiss her for their fates were now sealed with the
kiss. They were mated for eternity.
When Ray Sutherland opened his eyes he was smiling. When
he touched her no electricity ran between them. She had already
got dressed but as he pulled her towards his naked body she felt
him reach up under her clothes. She tried to reach for his hand to
move it away but he shook his head telling her not to. His hands
simply roamed her skin. When it reached her mark there was
warmth spreading over her. I am sorry for being too wild. He
whispered. She couldnt help a shy smile at what he referred to. I
didnt know you were so untouched. He admitted as his other
hand slid to her breasts kneading them alternately.
I enjoyed myself. She admitted like a wanton woman but she
knew after the previous night he knew her better. She could hear
her breathy voice and she wondered if he could hear the throbbing
of her heart. Ray Sutherland slowly peeled off her dress kissing her
down her neck. By the time he reached her shoulder he stopped.
Where did you get this tattoo? He asked sharply. It took her a
while to process what he was saying. When she did she was
shocked. How could Ray Sutherland, a human, see her mark?
What tattoo?
This tattoo with angel wings and a halo on your back, this has
some writing below the halo. What script is this? He asked.
29 Ana Bennette 2014

When she looked at his face the romance was all gone. He was
serious. I have it since childhood. It is our native tongue. She
explained.
He narrowed his eyes and looked away. He was planning and
calculating something she knew not what. How could he see her
mark? Had she lost all magic for mating with a human?
You asked me about operation black star yesterday.
Remember? He said looking back at her. She nodded pulling up
her dress. She wondered if it did not bother the man that he was
still sitting naked on her bed. As she was thinking this he got up to
find his coat. He took out a piece of paper and gave it to her. It is
an extra-terrestrial artefact NASA found in a meteorite crash site
which looks like a black star and has the following engraving in it
similar to your tattoo. Can you read it?
Cassie opened the piece of paper already dreading what it
might contain and she was right. Samael is coming for me She
managed to scream and she started to panic.

V. The Disappearing Act
Present time
So saying Ray Sutherland, the mortal who dared to defy the
Angel, pulled out a dagger of light. The crystal, producing a strong
beam of light a few feet in length was a laser the power of which is
unimaginable and whose own source is unseen. At the same time
Ray Sutherland transformed from the man he was to a creature no
one he knew would recognize. Above his head appeared a halo in
the vibgyor colours of the rainbow. From his pale blue eyes ensued
a white light like the tiger's eyes glow in the dark and invisible to
all humans from his shoulders protruded transparent blades that
softly reflected the faint light from his glowing skin. "My name is
Ray Sutherland and I am your doom Samael. Get ready to be
destroyed" he spoke in a language familiar to the stranger for it
was his own."You can' t be real. I killed you. You do not exist."
said the creature.
"Well apparently I do exist, of course it might have never
occurred to you that your death may not come from one of you
own kind, the conceited fools that you are." Ray remarked.
Ray Sutherland picked up his sword of light and held up a
crystal shield. Behind him the soldiers that were still standing
31 Ana Bennette 2014

brought forward similar swords of light. The alien did not know
what to do. He had spent eons searching for the weapon that could
kill him and there in that field each carried the weapon.
"This is the Dagger of light, or a laser as we call it, the only
weapon potent enough to kill you. I procured the prototype from
your girlfriend. Once I studied the weapon of your world it was
easy to replicate it. My men have been trained in using the light of
life. If you assume you can kill them by externally engulfing them
in your darkness think again. The only way you had of defeating
them was through fear. Those who were to succumb to fear have
already succumbed. You may try and do your worst but I shall be
the death of you." So saying Ray Sutherland signalled to his men
and shouted "Charge."
Soon Samael had taken to the air trying to avoid the light of
life from the soldiers, the light that was potent enough to kill him.
High up in the clouds he finally dared to look behind him and saw
the smirking face of the mortal he had previously brought to the
clouds. "Your girlfriend gave me a gift that saved my life. Thank
her for me will you, if you manage to return." So saying Ray drove
his sword through Samael's heart. Instead of blood light oozed out
of him.
Samael fell to the ground. The cloud of darkness surrounding
him started to dissipate. Ray through the special sight, which was
32 Ana Bennette 2014

another gift from his wife, who was in reality this creature's
beloved, saw the tattoos disappear from the creature's body as he
fell onto the ground lifeless. A part of Ray wished to tear the
creature limb from limb but he was taught to respect the dead. That
was his human ways and he had chosen to be a human.
Ray swooped down and took a curtain off a nearby window
and covered the corpse. As he looked up the skies had begun to
brighten with the light of day. He felt the warmth of the sunshine
falling on his back. He looked behind to saw the diffracted light
glisten on his wings. He summoned his wings to disappear. He was
a human after all.
Soon his men appeared after him. Ray pointed to them the
corpse covered with the curtain. There were many concerns about
confinement. Ray wondered if killing Samael turned his Cassandra
to dust. He wasn't in the mood to salvage the alien species they had
managed to collect. He walked away into the rising sun.
Behind him his men stood guard at the corpse. It took a few
hours for the confinement team to get ready. The sheet was finally
removed from over the corpse. What remained was a pile of black
soot. Was that all that remained of the mighty Samael?

VI. The Proposal from Remorse
Five mont hs back
Cassandras hands were shaking and tears started to flow from
her eyes. Her darkest fear had come to be realized. Her days on
earth were numbered and she felt like a fool to fall for a mortal.
She felt Ray take her in his arms to stop her shaking. Soon
Cassandra was comfortably cradled against his body and his
warmth seeped into her. He gently kissed her on her back, kissed
her mark which felt odd. Cassandra had never been so intimately
touched by anyone. Only her father could see her mark and he had
explained to her the significance of it.
Soon Ray turned from kissing her back to her neck and then
her lips. Cassandra felt her body open up to him. She knew what
was happening but again she was very helpless in this matter. It
was an automatic response. Cassandra closed her eyes and decided
to give in to the sensations she couldnt control. She surrendered to
Gods will and to the insistence of Ray Sutherland.
When she was steady enough Ray was watching her with
concern. You are completely safe with me, no one will ever touch
you, do you understand? he asked.
34 Ana Bennette 2014

She nodded knowing it was impossible to explain to him what
was written on that extra terrestrial artefact that they called the
black star that was so scary. Where is the star? She managed to
ask.
Its safe. He answered before getting up to dress. I have a
three day conference to attend. Ill be gone the entire day. I have
bought you a few sexy things to wear at night. I hope you dont
mind. I like to be entertained after a hard day. So saying he gave a
sexy smirk that melted her to the bed.
No I dont She whispered, shaking her head. What do you
want from me?
He curved his lips in triumph, Everything.
So saying, he left the room.
When a man of the calibre of Ray Sutherland wanted
everything from her, Cassandra had reason to be afraid. To not
mention the fact that Samael had sent a message to earth was also a
serious concern. That meant he knew that she was here. Then again
her disappearing powers also posed a mystery. She was a carrier
and her mating was supposed to transfer her powers to her mate.
Was it possible to transfer her powers to someone of a different
species?
35 Ana Bennette 2014

The three days passed away in a blur and the three nights
brought on more intimacy than Cassandra ever thought possible.
Cassandra told Ray about her parents being murdered for a family
heirloom and her escaping with it. He couldnt tell him from where
she had escaped and how. It would all be too much for him to
digest. She simply told him it was too painful to recapitulate. He
nodded and changed topic. Cassandra found out from Ray how he
was the illegitimate child of two foreign travellers who had left
him with his parents in return of their hospitality. Cassandra
realized how hard it was for a religious man like him to accept that
his birth was itself against God. But can a life be brought on earth
without the will of God? No it cannot. God had some purpose in
the illegitimacy of Raymond Michael Sutherland. Perhaps it was to
make him the righteous person he was or perhaps it was to ensure
that he had the conversation with Cassandra soon enough that was
vital to their relationship.
I am sorry to not give you a heads up about my intensions
with you but I didnt plan on things getting this far this soon. Ray
said and kissed her again.
Its alright. You wanted to avoid office gossip. It saved me
my reputation. Cassie said. I have never had any intimate
relationship before and I know you dont do relationships. It is
36 Ana Bennette 2014

better that things are cleared up between us. I do not mind this kind
of relationship that you choose.
Cassandra, you frustrate me. And did he sound frustrated! I
told you I want everything from you. That includes your heart
Cassie. When I said that I do not do relationships it doesnt
necessarily imply that I only have illicit affairs. One thing that you
do not understand of me is that I am deeply religious and our Lord
created me for one woman and when I kissed you I realized that
you are my woman Cassandra. That is why I allowed our
relationship to have progressed this far in the first place. Even then
you could have objected any time and I would have receded. I am
not a player Cassandra. I had sworn to celibacy till God pointed me
to the right woman in my life and you are that right woman. In my
mind I did not ravage you in my bed; I consummated the beginning
of our life together. Marry me Cassandra. We are meant to be.
The cat was out of the bag. Cassandra was already mated to
Ray. From the Universe that they come from marriage was
performed through consummation. A womans purity was
everything. Maybe God had later realized that beyond purity a
woman could have a heart and a will and so granted her the power
to choose among Earthlings. But that was a luxury her people
could never afford. Cassie looked away. She was forbidden to give
her heart to a mortal but she already did. She should say yes if she
37 Ana Bennette 2014

were to remain on Earth. How could she say this? But what if her
prolonged presence on Earth brought Samael and destruction! It
wouldnt be fair to him when Samael came and took her away. I
dont know if I can do that.
What do you mean you cant do that? Our relationship has
already been consummated!
Cassie looked away. She knew he was telling the truth. How
could she tell him that there was never to be anyone else for her?
She was bound to him but he need not be bound to her and that
would be for the greater good. I do not belong to you. I have to
return to my betrothed someday. She lied knowing it would bring
an excruciating pain on her heart to do so.
What? You are promised? You never even mentioned it to
me. Still you did want me, didnt you?
I do, I did. When you come near me the feelings overwhelm
me. I cant think straight with your kisses and your touch and I like
it and want more of it. But that cant change the fact that when
Samael comes for me I shall have to go with him.
In short, I seduced you. You know what that makes me feel
like? A cursed rapist; Ray Sutherland let out a frustrated breath. I
took your virginity for Gods sake.
38 Ana Bennette 2014

Dont take the Lords name in vain She said mollified.
I am not taking the Lords name in vain Cassandra. You are
bothered about cursing? Are you even bothered about a mans
conscience? You took away my faith and burdened my conscience
with your treachery. I took a part in your act of adultery and I have
sinned. Ray Sutherland, the Greek god, the master of his world
looked crushed.
You sinned in ignorance Ray. God will forgive you. I do not
love the person Ray, far from it. If there was a man that I do love it
is you. But it is a rule of our land that I cannot be with you. Still
my heart bleeds for you Ray Sutherland. How can I ease your
conscience? Cassie replied hastily, disturbed with the mans pain
and anguish. She placed the palm of her hand over his heart in
order to soothe him.
Kill me.
Cassie was shocked. I cant do that either. I would rather kill
myself.
Ray Sutherland got up and paced his room unsure of what he
was to do. Then he finally turned to her. Marry me today. Then
when you want to marry him I shall not come in the way. I wont
feel like I dishonoured you and you get a share in my property.
39 Ana Bennette 2014

I dont want your property. I love you in a way. But I cant
belong to you. Cassie tried to pacify him. She couldnt let him
marry her. Could she?
You wanted to ease my conscience. This is how. I am not
forcing you to do it or seducing you into it. This time it is your
choice. I give you my word when he wants you he will have you. I
guess he is the same guy that murdered your parents and you still
want to go back to him! I do not know what Antichrist you
worship but I shall do my level best to do right by you in the eyes
of the Lord whether you approve or not. I will never exercise my
rights on you. But I want to face myself in the mirror and God at
the end of my life on earth. Please Miss Angel.
I will marry you Ray if it is such a big thing to you but when
Samael comes, you will have to let me go. She decided to finally
give in. She could not force a man to wallow in guilt because of
her.
He nodded. He never imagined a hurried wedding or the fact
that a separation would loom in the dark behind them. They went
to a chapel to get a quick wedding. Soon they were back to their
normal busy life. Ray insisted that Cassie move in with him in his
apartment. He explained he had an elderly housekeeper who could
chaperon her stay in the house. The pent house apartment had six
bedrooms and Cassie could comfortably settle into one till she
40 Ana Bennette 2014

chose to leave. What Ray didnt mention was that he would be
returning to work for NASA on Project Black Star very soon and
Cassie would have all the luxuries of the pent house to herself. He
could do at least that much to make up for his sins.

41 Ana Bennette 2014

VII. The Arrival of Doom
Two months later
Initially Ray felt himself slipping into the tail end of the
darkness from the creature. Then the ice on his skin started to melt.
He was moving through the clouds which felt like needles piercing
skin. Ray turned to face the earth greeting him below. He
wondered if any of his body parts would be found. He wondered if
he would turn to a splatter on hitting ground. Just then something
penetrated his senses. Samael. Samael is coming for me.
Ray couldnt imagine Cassie to be in love with this destructive
creature. It wasnt love that kept her away from him. It was fear.
Cassie was scared for him. She was scared of Samael and Ray had
to protect her somehow. Somehow he had to prevent his death
even if it seemed impossible. He had to stop falling.
It was a one hour drive and Stanley barely made it. The nurses
screaming at the emergency door brought back Ray to his senses.
How he had made it that far he did not remember. Neither did he
bother to ponder over it. Admitting him to the ICCU Ray did not
have time to wait to hear the doctors opinion.
Cassie was scared stiff. This could not be happening. This was
unheard of. She was pregnant of a human, a mere human. She had
42 Ana Bennette 2014

already lost all her powers and this child was everything she had of
her legacy which was diluted with human blood. The child would
not be able to protect itself or its father. Should she bring a creature
into this world that would be sitting ducks for Samael to come and
end its life? She couldnt protect it. She was a mere healer now.
She could heal with her touch but that was nothing compared to the
powers she had earlier possessed. She could never fully utilize her
powers but at least she had a chance.
Why did she have to fall in love with a human? She was on
earth to hide, not to settle down. She could never settle down, not
after her parents were brutally killed, and for her. She remembered
the day vividly. She was sitting with her mother who tried to
convince her that Raphael was a good match for her. Her powers
and that of her father made it impossible for her to choose a lesser
angel. How Cassandra complained that all the higher angels were
millennia older than her and had other mates. You will need the
best protection till you consummate the mating. You are a carrier
and your powers lie in your purity. Every creature in the seven
heavens will wish to claim it whether by trick or force. Had you
been born to a lesser angel? So saying, her mother turned to
dust.
Cassandra knew what it meant. A healer turned to dust when
her mate was killed. Could it mean that her father was killed? That
43 Ana Bennette 2014

was when she felt it for the first time, the chill running down her
spine. She looked back to see the tendrils of darkness spread
towards her. She ran towards the secret vault and took the two
most valuable things her family ever had, the white star and the
Dagger. Her magic allowed her to be transported anywhere on her
planet. She chose to go to her best friend Alexandra.
Alexandra had committed a crime. She had killed a lesser
creature. She had been condemned to another dimension to serve
as a guardian angel. The punishment was irrevocable. When she
reached Alexandras place the teleporter was ready to send her to
earth. The darkness was close on her heels. Seeing darkness chase
her Alexandra tried to defend her friend but suffocated in the
darkness. Using her friend as a distraction Cassandra boarded the
teleporter and beamed her onto earth. Reaching earth she destroyed
the teleporter and forever banished herself. She never imagined
that Samael would send another teleporter after her to receive his
signal. But fortunately the teleporter had not been set. Had it?
Cassie could feel the tears running down her cheeks. As a
carrier she could never have cried but now she could and despite
the fact that tears were associated with darkness and gloom she felt
light. She wondered if her death would affect Ray in any way. In
her dimension the male was always the strongest of the couple and
faced all threats. On the death of the male the female perished. In
44 Ana Bennette 2014

her case it was not so. Then again she remembered that Ray could
see her mark. Did that mean her powers were successfully
transferred to him? Could a human manifest those powers?
All these questions plagued her when she heard the elevator
come up. It had to be Old Mr. Sutherland whom she had healed
after Rays departure. Ray hadnt called her in a month. She
wondered how much had she hurt him. But it was all for his own
good. She had to leave earth somehow before Samael came to
earth bringing death and destruction.
Cassie was sitting in the living room facing the large window.
Living in Rays house she had learnt that he loved light. Every
room had large windows and his bedroom had a star light,
something like the sunroof in a car. Cassie never slept in his room
but the house keeper, Mrs. Sheldon, told her. She wondered how it
would be to make love to him under the stars. She smiled and
rubbed away her tears to face her new guest. It was Ray.
Ray was covered in sand from head to toe and he looked dead
beat. Cassie went near him to wrap her arms around him. At the
last moment she recovered but Ray pulled her into a tight embrace.
Then he kissed her.
Ray had promised never to force himself on her because of
their relationship. Cassie knew Ray would never break his word. If
45 Ana Bennette 2014

his kisses were so insistent, something was wrong. Cassie had
longed for Rays kisses for the past one month. If he was hungry
for her she was starving. Soon they were spread on the living room
couch entangled in each others arms and almost out of breath. Ray
didnt touch Cassie anywhere. It was just a kiss that she could
never forget. Once sated, they sat up on the couch and Cassie
enquired what was wrong?
Ray remembered how Cassie had earlier panicked with the
mention of Samael. Ray had to first ensure himself that Cassie
cared about him. He didnt mind dying if it made Cassie. Being a
romantic should have been the last thing on his mind when the
entire world was inching towards destruction but Cassie was his
world and he needed her.
There was an accident in the lab. I was outside. My partner is
critically injured and everyone else dead. I am scared. When I
thought what would have happened to me if I were inside the first
thought that passed through me was that I wouldnt see you ever
again. I missed you.
Cassie couldnt bring herself to consider the situation if Ray
were dead. She loved him. A mere accident never posed a threat to
life in their world but the thought how fragile life was here brought
tears to her eyes. Ray kissed away those tears and asked her the
46 Ana Bennette 2014

question he had meant to. Cassie, you once mentioned a guy
named Samael. Is that the guy you love?
Cassie did not know what to say. She could not bear not to tell
him anymore even if it was for a while. She didnt care if her child
was never born. This was her family and she would rather choose
to fight for her family than surrender to Samael out of fear. Ray, I
belong to him.
Do you care about me, at all?
I love you Ray. I do.
Now that is better, isnt it?
But I belong to Samael, Ray. We are not meant to be. Cassie
said breaking into sobs.
I wont let Samael touch you Cassie. I know you are afraid of
him. Fear isnt a great judge of character. Have faith in the Lord. If
he brought you to me it is for a reason. Be assured he brought you
where you belong. You cannot go against Gods will out of fear.
Ray assured. That brought fright to her eyes. She vehemently
shook her head.
You dont know what he is, what you are up against. You
cant fight Samael. Even God is powerless against him. Cassie
said in a defeated tone.
47 Ana Bennette 2014

God is all powerful Cassie. If he does not demonstrate his
powers it is for a test of our will and faith. And my will is strong
Cassie and my faith is firm. I fully intend to fight him Cassie. I will
fight him for you. You belong to me Cassie. Ray said solemnly.
Cassie was shaking her head denying her feelings for her
husband; When Cassie looked up at Rays face. An accident
didnt kill my friends. An accident didnt strike our research lab. It
was Samael. Now I need to know everything about him. I know
that his weakness is light. What else can you tell me about him?
Most importantly, what are you creatures?
How did you know he is one of us?
I am a scientist. It is my job to draw inference. Ray
explained.
You are a human Ray.
You make it sound like being human is a bad thing. We adapt.
God may try us from time to time but he loves us enough to
sacrifice his only begotten son for our redemption.
Ray humans are weaklings. That is a truth you cannot avoid.
And the consciousness of God is a myth. The Creator is aloof Ray.
He doesnt care whether we live or die.
48 Ana Bennette 2014

You need saving Cassie, from yourself. You need faith. May
God help you! May be we are weaklings. But God helps us
through our weaknesses. What are you?

49 Ana Bennette 2014

VIII. Creatures From Beyond

We are Angels, not the mythological kind. Angels were the
first creatures to make progress in science. We were guided by the
force you worship as God. God is a conscious energy to our people
and early Angels found a way to tap into this consciousness. In that
way they communicate with God and the all knowing ever
encompassing energy guides our existence. With the help of Gods
directions we were the earliest to cross the boundaries of
dimensions and worlds. After populating the seven habitable
planets of our dimension we Angels sought out more worlds that
could be used for expansion. God sent us to earth. By the time that
the Angels reached earth, it was already inhabited by a humanoid
race, the Homo erectus. We did not realize why God had sent us
here. But the men here were godless, ignorant. The Angels took up
the species as their pet training it in ethics and science. They
employed officers to look after the species. They were called the
Guardian Angels. No one wanted to come to earth to become a
Guardian as it meant sacrificing so many luxuries available in our
worlds. So being a Guardian Angel was a sort of punishment for
misdemeanour. One who served the full term with discipline got to
be reinstated in our world. Cassie started to narrate.
50 Ana Bennette 2014

Our world comprised of a federation of seven planets called
the seven heavens. The number of the planet is directly
proportional to the power of the inhabitants. I am from the sixth
heaven. Sixth heaven is a cursed planet one of whose sides is
always submerged in darkness. I am from the surface of light. It is
ruled by Raphael. But the dark surface is ruled by the creature
Samael. The names of the Angels are passed down from
generations along with their powers, like your surnames and DNA.
With each generation the powers evolve and are transferred to the
next. The powers also add through mating. The female of our
species act as carrier of power and when they are mated with a
male the powers are transferred to the male. Very few females can
manifest the power they carry. For instance my grandfather from
my mothers side controlled lightning storms, my father controlled
rain. After mating my father attained control over both thunder and
rain and in addition the sky. He became the angel of the sky. I
served as carrier for his power. Once I lost my powers for mating
with you I turned into a mere healer.
Can you imagine what may have happened if darkness is
united with the sky. When the darkness rule the sky life will
vanish. Samael wanted that for which he wished to mate with me.
He killed my father and being mated to him my mother also died. I
ran to earth and hid for five years.
51 Ana Bennette 2014

Samael is not going to be happy to know I have wasted such
great powers on a mortal. But this is better. He wont have my
powers now.
I am sorry for dragging you into this mess.
There is only one way to end the terror. My father was the
safe keeper of a weapon, the dagger that can kill Samael. But the
dagger can be operated by a mythical character that doesnt exist.
Legend has it that the dagger can be used by the strongest Angel in
all of creation and only he can discover how to use it. Cassandra
stopped.
Angels may be higher up in honour in the eyes of the Lord but
He loves us more. We may not be able to tap into His
consciousness but He answers us through prayers. You derive your
knowledge from Him but have no faith in His Justice. We keep our
faith in him and bask in His glory. Still are you ashamed of me
Cassie? Are you ashamed because I am of lower stature in your
eyes? Is that it? Or is it the power? Ray asked.
I am ashamed of myself for being the cause of your death.
Well as far as I can see I am alive and whatever future you do
see God has the power to change. All you need to do is get down
on your knees and pray. Can you pray for a weakling like me? Do
you see me as a pet?
52 Ana Bennette 2014

Initially I saw all humans as pets.
Do you see me as a pet Cassie?
Sometimes I do.
Can you pray for a pet?
I do not pray Ray. I am cursed but I do not feel that
connection with that God of yours
Oh! I do not have a monopoly on God. And as you mentioned
your people brought us closer to God in the first place. I pity your
lack of faith Cassie. All you really need to do is close your eyes
and surrender to His will. Still praying gives you a direction to act
on. The action is yours. Am I allowed to see the dagger?
Cassie nodded and brought back a crystal decorated with Gold
along the edges. Along with the dagger she brought the white star.
Our family was meant to be the carrier. We were to give this to
the saviour. But the magic gets transmitted through families. There
is no family that controls light. The family of Af was put down by
God himself for He felt it too great a power for an individual to
control. Light gives life, destroys darkness, fear and deception.
Light is the power of truth of redemption. It surpasses all other
powers and there is now no hope.
53 Ana Bennette 2014

Maybe your saviour wont be an angel. Maybe God has
something else in store
He has to be born with the power and understanding only an
Angel might possess. Ray. I hope he is not too late.
You put too much faith on your kind.
So do you and foolishly at that. I have to go to Samael. Will
you keep these safe with you?
I wont let you go to him.
This conversation was futile. She could delude herself with her
petty logic fuelled with fear but Ray Sutherland would have none
of it. She had to hurt the mortal she loved in order to let him live.
You cant stop me. You dont have any right over me. You are a
petty human Ray. You will die in a few years and I am an almost
immortal. I have an eternity lying before me which I wont waste
being your wife. She cried out. She hoped Ray did not notice the
tears in her eyes or the hopelessness in them. But it worked. Ray
was hurt and what he said next was what she had hoped for.
Ok. Go to your lover. He will give you what you want. Still
Ill wait for you for my paltry human lifetime Cassie. I will. By the
way, you said you were a healer. What does that mean?
54 Ana Bennette 2014

I heal the sick by my touch. I can cure any illness. I healed
your father too.
Come with me then. Heal my friend and you are free to leave
immediately.
Ray had lost the battle for love. Cassie deserved Samael. They
were both suited for each other in their own conceited ways. What
mattered foremost were now his friends and his world.
Stanley was in a critical state. The fact that he was alive after
the ordeal he went through was in itself a feat. The doctors did not
have much hope for him. He had been on life support since the
moment he had reached there. The doctors had wanted to admit
Ray also to check for dehydration and frost bite for his stay in the
desert but preliminary test proved he was completely healthy.
When Ray entered Stanleys room, his old friend did not stir. Ray
pointed him out to Cassie who went over and touched him.

Ray saw with his own eyes as the blisters and wounds
disappeared and Stanleys vital signs returned to normal. It was
difficult to accept a miracle through his scientific mind. He wanted
to ask her how she did it but he was simply grateful. That was
when Cassie explained herself. Our DNA structure is different
from yours and so is our energy signature. Every material body has
55 Ana Bennette 2014

an energy signature. Our energy signature has a very high
frequency. Through touch we may force your energy signature to
oscillate with our frequency leading to an increase in energy
circulation. That energy circulation dramatically speeds up healing
and cleansing of your body systems.
That is a great way of healing. Let your body heal itself and
just give it a push. Ray concluded. Cassie nodded and saw
Stanley coming to. When he opened his eyes he pulled open the
oxygen machine and sat up. The electrodes embedded I his skin
popped open and he felt pain. Ouch. What happened? He asked
seeing Ray.
An accident is what happened. Dont you remember? Ray
asked. Stanley sat for a while and then said, The Creature came.
Ray nodded and looked at Cassie. Cassie knew the look. He was
accusing her of drawing their planet in a lovers tiff and breaking
his heart in the process.
Suddenly the room turned cold and Cassie shivered. Ray
moved over to Stanley and started loosening the electrodes. We
have to go now. Samael is almost here. Turning to Cassie he
asked, You are staying? Cassie nodded.
Ray handed Stanley some clothes he had brought for him and
soon they were out of the room. Cassie watched as the man she
56 Ana Bennette 2014

loved walked away from her. With every step he took misery
overtook her. Her heart was breaking and an Angel with a broken
heart manifests no power. She was sitting ducks for Samael. But
she took comfort in the fact that Ray would be at least safe.

IX. The Fall to Reality
24 hours back
Ray was literally falling from the sky. The ice that had
accumulated around him had melted and he could feel the heat of
friction of the air through which he plummeted towards the
ground. The clouds slowly gave way as he had a clear view of the
land where he fell. He was now a little distance from the desert
where the research facility was situated. He needed to stop falling
however and he needed to act against gravity. Science taught him
that it was not possible but faith had taught him something far
different. Ray closed his eyes and prayed to the Lord to perform a
miracle, to save his life and grant him the power to protect his wife
and his world. No sooner did the words come out of his heart than
he stabilized, floating high above the ground. For a moment Ray
wondered whether he was really dead and his body had met the
fate that his soul had not. Then something hit the corner of his
eyes. It was reflected light. Ray turned around to see the source.
He was the source and the light was reflected off the rainbow
coloured wings that came out of his shoulder. In a daze and in a fit
of adrenaline rush Ray flew over the desert and landed in an oases.
Ray felt the light from the cloudless sky soak into his numb
skin. He walked over to a fountain where he saw the light
58 Ana Bennette 2014

gleaming from his skin. Over his head a halo spread in rainbow
colours. His skin lost its natural colours and was covered in the
various hues of light and all over his body were the markings of an
Angel. What Cassandra had assumed to be a waste of her powers
was Gods way to ensure that mankind survived yet another
disaster, a disaster named Samael.
He scanned the desert for any sign of the soldiers who fell to
their death with him. He found torn pieces of flesh, a hand, a shoe
with the foot in it. Ray was aghast with the scenes that he
witnessed. He needed to splash some water on his face to prevent
him from going to shock. The sky was setting in the western sky.
With that as reference he set out for the research centre. It was
towards the northern end of the desert. He studied the stars to find
his way. He was numb with fear and cold but kept walking. He
reached his desired destination by dawn. The rescue workers all
lay suffocated on the ground. Not a single living soul remained.
When he walked towards the ambulance he felt a clicking noise
from inside. Stanley was still breathing and in his hand held a
pressure torch. It was made from a piezoelectric material
connected to a circuit with an LED. Pressing a diaphragm
connected with the piezoelectric material allowed the LED to glow
for a short while. The light kept me going. Stanley breathed on
seeing Ray.

X. The Haven for the Child
A mont h later.
The skies were taking on the orange tint of the approaching
sunset when she opened my eyes. At first she mistook the blush of
the clouds for dawn. Then as the sky darkened further she knew
that night was approaching and her eyes were closed. They opened
after a while. She still couldnt move. After struggling a lot with
she managed to shake the bed to which she felt tied by invisible
ropes. The vibrations managed to knock off the glass of water kept
on the mantelpiece. The glass came shattering to pieces on hitting
the floor. It was beyond her strength to bend down and pick up the
shards of glasses. Her consciousness felt groggy and she couldnt
even figure out which was the room that she had been sleeping in.
Soon faint sound of hurried footsteps up a staircase alerted her.
The sound was getting louder and she figured someone was
coming towards her room. She didnt know whether to be afraid or
relieved. But more importantly she did not know who to expect.
When the door parted open a ribbon of yellow light fell on her
eyes momentary blinding her after the darkness of the room. When
the eyes adjusted she could see a man standing at the door with a
frown on his face. Her vision was blurry but a prominent nose and
a grim mouth. He looked worried. She wanted to call out to him
60 Ana Bennette 2014

but her vocal cords refused to function according to her will. The
face that she saw silhouetted against the light was oddly familiar, a
face that she knew, and a face that she loved.
Ray she called out without knowing why. The door
suddenly slammed and she was again left in darkness. She could
hear a mans voice outside. He seemed to be talking to himself.
When the door opened again the lights came up. Behind the man
were two women, identical women wearing white robes and with
thick white wings: The twin healers of the Seventh World was a
legend she did not thought she would have the chance to witness.
She suddenly remembered who she was as the man in front called
out to her Cassandra, my child, how do you feel?
Cassandra blinked in confusion, the only action she was
capable of. The man signalled to the healers to help her. As the
twins came forward and placed their palm on her forehead
Cassandra could feel their energy vibrations pass through her
unresponsive flesh pushing them further into action. Once they
stepped back Cassandra sat up on what she had earlier assumed to
be a bed. It was actually a healing table and she realized that she
was in the healers chamber.
What happened? she asked.
61 Ana Bennette 2014

When Samael, the Angel of Death and Darkness, found you
without power, he tried to eliminate you but as your mate is alive
and well, he failed. You however went into a coma. Some mortals
found you and placed you in a mortal healing facility from which I
retrieved you. I wanted to heal you right away but Celia, my love
insisted for you to be awake for the procedure. The man spoke,
who had earlier to a groggy Cassandra resembled a man she knew,
who now seemed a stranger. His hair was too dark and his eyes
were green.
Who are you? She asked her saviour.
I am Michael, the man responsible for bringing knowledge to
the mortals on Earth, which today is pointing towards its end.
You must rest. You need to heal completely before catching
up with the events of the world. You are still on earth as a matter
of fact. I believe I should first get you to a safer location. A world
under seize of a celestial battle is not a place for a child to be
born. exclaimed the man who was as much a legend as God
himself.
Child? asked Cassandra in Amazement.
Yes. You are ripe with your mates child, your mate who
faces strange odds in his battle against Samael. You should at least
remain safe to afford him some peace of mind. Spoke one of the
62 Ana Bennette 2014

twins. Cassandra noticed that despite the blonde hair and matching
robes one thing told apart the twins. While one had eyes that were
a strange purple like one had eyes which were clear blue, eyes that
she remembered as if from a dream.
Cassandra felt lost. A battle was waging. Her mate was
engaged in a celestial war with one of the strongest creature in the
seven worlds. Further being away from their world and on foreign
land put constraint on their resources. Suddenly a basic question
popped into her mind. Who is my mate?
Michael frowned and looked at the two healers. It is for the
best they said in chorus. The man nodded and looked at
Cassandra begging her to comply with the situation, assuring her
that one day everything would be alright.
Then the twin with the blue eyes spoke. You will know in
time. At present what is of primary importance is for your body to
heal. Then turning to Celia she said. Allow me to take her with
me. My lair is the one place no one would expect this girl to be.
My mate will graciously provide the refuge needed. No one
noticed the womans voice quiver as she spoke of her mate but it
was assumed to be the best.

63 Ana Bennette 2014

XI. The Light of Life
A mont h later
Back on earth Ray still had possession of the one weapon that
could eliminate the threat to humanity called Samael. Samael was
still on earth though he had never heard from Cassie afterwards.
Most likely Samael intended to finish his annihilation of earth
before returning to his own dimension. The weapon did not
provide him with any leads as it was a harmless stump and a
smooth star shaped disc. Ray had not returned to NASA and
neither had Stanley. Both of them lodged at Rays father old
duplex apartment which they had converted into a laboratory.
Ray never told anyone how he had survived his fall fromm the
sky. No one had pestered him for information concluding that he
had suffered a great trauma. Only Ray knew that he was
humanitys last hope. Cassandras powers transferred to him
provided him the capability to destroy Samael and he only now
needed to unlock the weapon that was meant to be his doom.
Toiling night and day however, Ray had failed miserably in
transcribing the alien text engraved on the star. The star contained
five tiny spikes on the flat surfaces of the stars which Ray used as
its base. The stub was lined with gold strips along the edges. It had
a pentagonal cross section. On the centre of the star was an
64 Ana Bennette 2014

engraving of a pentagon. Laser or Sonar or any other vibration of
any frequency had failed to elicit a response out of the star. He had
now taken a different approach to unlocking its mystery. Ray
placed the stub on the engraving and the outline of the stub
matched the engraving exactly. However nothing happened.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door. Ray, who was
absorbed in his work, looked up startled. "Stanley! I am working."
He sounded infuriated.
"You are always working. It has been three months and
nothing. It is time you took a break. I ordered a pizza. Come and
eat" So saying Stanley left.
Ray nodded and stood up. Then he had a second thought and
picked up the stub in one hand. In the other hand he picked up the
star and balanced the spokes on the tips of his fingers. As he did so
the spokes pierced his skin. He felt the sting but saw light coming
out of the engravings of the star. The star served as a projector and
the entire room was filled with the alien script, only it did not feel
alien to him anymore. He knew exactly what was written in the
script. The light emanating from the star had bonded with the DNA
in his blood and was transferring the knowledge on a molecular
level activating sections of the DNA Ray rarely used. Light came
out of his eyes till he finally closed his eyes and took all the
information in.
65 Ana Bennette 2014

Stanley had been waiting for Ray for almost an hour. He had
finished his portion of the pizza and was contemplating what to do
with Ray's part which was already cold. That was when Ray's door
opened and he stepped out as if in a daze. Ray walked straight
towards the window and opened it. They were on the eighteenth
floor of the building. Wind rushed in through the open window
scattering all the documents placed around the room. Stanley
hardly had time to curse Ray before he got busy in gathering
together all the papers. When he looked back at the window Ray
was gone.
Stanley was frantic. Had ray jumped out of the window out of
frustration? Stanley rushed down to the elevator and went down to
the ground level to make sure there were no bloody remains of his
colleague and friend. There was none.
Ray had vanished into thin air and Stanley was out of his
depths. He went up to the apartment and searched everywhere. He
tidied up the place and was contemplating on informing the Police
when suddenly the window opened again. Stanley looked back to
see Ray standing in front of the open window with light shining
through his eyes.
"What happened? Were you abducted or something?" Stanley
asked still unable to realize what had happened to Ray.
66 Ana Bennette 2014

"I have unlocked the secret of the White Star." Ray said and sat
down on the couch. After a long time Ray smiled. Slowly the smile
spread on his face and he broke out into hysterical laughter.
After he stopped laughing Stanley took a seat in front of him.
He placed a glass of water on the table between them. The
expression on his face simply stated "Pal! You need help." Ray
laughed again, this time a more balanced exuberance. "Our
approach was wrong in the first place." Then he took a long sip of
the refreshingly cold water and started to explain.
"The black star was an inter-dimensional teleportation device
and as such could be activated by mechanical vibration. The white
star on the other hand is an infinite database of alien knowledge
which had a bio lock on it. The bio lock is such that only a
particular strand of DNA can unlock the information contained in
the star and that DNA is entered through the spokes on the
underside of the star. When evenly administered at all the spokes
my blood served as the key to the bio lock and as a result I could
access the knowledge in the reserve. The star can also be used as a
telecommunication receptor from other universe or as a shield but
to use the star as such the bio lock had to be opened first. The stub
is useless by itself but joins with the star to form a super laser
concentrating the entire solar energy in a volume of space and
concentrating it in a single beam. It can actually concentrate any
67 Ana Bennette 2014

light in an environment, even the light of life." So saying Ray
paused and studied Stanley's reaction. He knew he would have to
demonstrate part of what he already knew. Only there were a few
things that had posed more questions to him than the answers it
had provided.
"What is the light of life?" Stanley asked, enumerating each
syllable separately as if to emphasize Ray to slow down.
"The light of life or the Soul is the energy that allows us to live.
Under general conditions it serves as our life force driving our day
to day activity. But as all energy may be transformed from the
potential to kinetic state similarly the energy responsible for the
life force may be projected beyond our physical extent. Some call
it psychic powers. That energy may be amplified and modulated
using this device to form a laser thus negating the effect the
creature has on its surrounding. This is not just a weapon to defeat
the creature. It is a weapon to render the creature's power null and
void."
"If this is such an effective weapon against the creature why
did the creator of this weapon not use it against it?" Stanley
wondered.
68 Ana Bennette 2014

"The creator had programmed the bio lock to open with a
particular DNA, a sample of which he did not have." Ray
explained.
"But why did he program it with your DNA?"
"I don't know Stanley. All I know is that at least there is now a
way to save this planet."
"And what about Cassie?"
"What about her?"
"I am not blind you know."
"She made her choice. It is time she found out how helpless
and pathetic humans really are. Our coming together had a purpose
and this is it. Cassies gift to me will save humanity. "

69 Ana Bennette 2014

XII. Descent into Fire
Present time
The creature squinted into the dark. In the distance he could see
flames burning in clusters. It was hot, very hot where he lay. All
the figures around him threw a faint orange light into the room. He
was sweating which was odd. He felt terribly weak and he did not
know what to do. He focused on his surrounding for any footstep
he might hear. There was deathly stillness around.
"Your senses are controlled by me here, Samael. Do not strain
your ears." spoke a deep voice from someone within the shadows.
The Angel of Darkness had never been afraid of Shadows. Yet
now he was. The voice seemed familiar somehow but it did not
belong to the General. "I never thought I would see you like this."
smirked the unknown voice.
"Who are you?" cried the frightened winged creature.
"How could you forget your cousin Samael, the cousin you
exiled from your domains? You are in my dominion now and at
my mercy" sounded the voice of the creature coming out of the
shadows. The creature was humanoid. He could be passed for the
most beautiful Man on Earth. He had the perfectly crafted face,
perfectly clear complexion and crystal clear eyes. His eyes were
70 Ana Bennette 2014

the perhaps the most striking feature about his face. His irises were
not rounded but elongated like that of a snake. Those were the only
things that gave him away. Recognition came to the weakened
creature gradually. "Lucifer"
Back in the Sixt h Heaven
Cassandra had started to get back some of her memories. She
remembered her mortal husband and his faith. She remembered
how she had left him out of fear. But she failed to remember why
she went to him in the first place.
Samael when trying to kill her had failed but his darkness had
seeped into her mind clouding the goodness that there was and
covering everything with fear and prejudice. Love no longer held a
place there, not for her husband and not for her child to come.
She was a guest in the house of Raphael, the house that her
parents once wished her to be wed into. The woman who had
brought her here was Ariella, who was Raphaels servant. The
legend of the twin healers did not in reality possess the allure and
charm of a myth. Ariella and Celia were conceived of the same
womb but were born with marks different from that of their
parents. That is a rare occurrence in the world of Angels when the
female directly bears the mark of her mate from birth. While one
bore the mark of the ruler of the seventh heaven, their native
71 Ana Bennette 2014

planet, the other was destined for a lower planet. Unwillingly to
accept a position lower than her twin she had been clouded with
jealousy and blinded by Samael into seducing the man her sister
was betrothed to. She had pretended to be her sister and
consummated the mating with her sisters mate. Raphael was her
betrothed. When her parents found out what she had done they
demanded a sacrifice of her in return of giving her life. That
sacrifice was her the-then mate. She convinced her mate, her
sisters betrothed, that she repented her mating with him and
wished to return to her own betrothed. Raphael was requested to
redeem her to her carrier self. The process was partially successful.
Her ties with her mate were severed but she remained a healer,
unable to take up a mate or return to her old one. Soon she fell ill
and gave birth to a still born child. From then on even her healing
touch was assumed cursed. Only her sister still trusted her with it.
She remained a servant in the house of Raphael, her once
betrothed, only to run errands. She had served as Guardian Angels
for most of her life and that too successfully but every time that
she returned she met with the same prejudice from everyone
around her.
Cassandra had listened to her story and sympathized with her.
No one made her sacrifice her marriage but the marriage only
seemed a burden to her. However she did not wish upon herself
Ariellas fate and she turned to Raphael for it. Once her child was
72 Ana Bennette 2014

born she would ask Raphael to redeem her as well as the mortal
she was bound to.
Back in Hell
Lucifer smiled a sly smile. It had been a long time that an
Angel had fallen so low as to be his guest. He was enjoying his
new guests plight, powerless, writhing with the pain of
humiliation. He had seen from the shadows how a human had risen
on wings to defeat the mighty Samael. Was that the next step in
evolution or was it some of Gods old tricks? Still he was human
and subject to human follies. He had followed the man and had
observed his follies. He was a devout man, too devoted to the
purpose of God. His resemblance to the watchdog of God was
remarkable. He was the splitting image of Lucifers arch enemy
Michael and it was too much of a coincidence. Then one day he
saw Michaels mate go visit the mortal disguised as a human. That
is when Lucifer decided that this creature was a pawn in the
human-lover Michaels attempt of overthrowing the Angels at the
hand of the paltry humans. He could not let his brethren suffer for
the folly of Michael. But there was very little he could do from his
exile. His only hope was that Raphael would be too tempted to
redeem Samael, his own twin brother. Whatever action he had to
take had to be through Samael.

XIII. Old Family Visits
Five Mont hs in t he Future
Ray was at home. Outside he was heralded as a hero. He
did not like that people praised him in place of God. He
cherished the anonymity he received inside his own home.
Celia had come to visit him recently. She had been the one
female presence in his life he cherished. She heralded from the
orphanage that had once been his home. He did not remember
the place but she always paid yearly visits to see how he had
been doing. She had stopped visiting a few years back but
when she returned the day before he could let himself slip back
to his childhood. Remarkably she hadnt aged a day since he
first remembered her. He could speak to Celia about his faith,
his beliefs, fears, his weaknesses. He told her about Cassie. He
didnt dare tell her that she was an angel or perhaps even Celia
would have had him committed. Some secrets were to be kept.
When Celia questioned him about his powers however, Ray
was taken aback.
I can help you Ray, in whatever way you need. I understand
the anguish of not knowing where you truly belong, what you
truly are. But at the end of the day you are a servant of God as
74 Ana Bennette 2014

we all are and our foremost duty is to Him and to his cause of
righteousness.
Celias words took Ray aback. What are you hiding from
me? he asked her.
All will be revealed in time Ray but it is up to you to choose
your own destiny. She said cryptically and then stood up to
leave.
Please come back Celia. I need you. Ray begged her as she
reached the door.
Celia turned back and smiled. I shall be back, son. May God
be with you, So saying the door closed behind her. Ray knew
it would be fruitless to look out the window for her because she
would have disappeared by now. She had always disappeared
so after every visit.
A knock brought back Ray from his memories. He walked to
the door to find Celia standing in front of him. Something was
off about her though. Ray Sutherland? she asked and then
gasped in horror.
Ray noticed that her eyes were blue like his instead of the
purple that were Celias. You are not Celia I presume. Ray
75 Ana Bennette 2014

stated unsure. Celias name brought both surprise and
recognition to her eyes.
How do you know my twin sister? she asked.
She is my Godmother was Rays reply. If you did not come
on behalf of Celia may I know what your purpose here is and
what may I know your name is?
I am Ariella and I am the messenger of the house of Raphael
where Cassandra Sutherland currently is She said.
On hearing Cassies name Rays face lit up with a smile. With
Samael vanquished, perhaps Cassandra thought him worthy of
her now. Please come inside.
Thank you
Ray offered her a seat and a glass of water. He was eager to
hear of his wife but his manners told him to treat the messenger
with reverence first. Please calm down Mr. Sutherland. I am
not used to being so much taken care of Replied the guest.
She was looking down unable to meet his eyes.
You bring me news of my life, my wife. How can I not treat
you well? Ray retorted.
76 Ana Bennette 2014

With a deep sigh Ariella began, When Cassandra left you she
was with child. She paused to let the information sink in
before she proceeded. Three days back she has given birth to a
mortal child, your son. A smile soon split Rays face in half at
the news. He couldnt contain himself but he calmed himself
down to listen to the messenger. Cassandra is at present a
guest at the house of Raphael, the Angel her parents had
chosen to be her mate. She wishes to fulfil her parents last
wish. For that she needs to be redeemed as a carrier which
entails her forsaking her mortal child. The child is to be exiled
to earth to live as an orphan.
Ray suddenly stood up. He had heard enough. My son shall
not live the life of an orphan while I am alive. Ray growled.
I expected as much. To be honest Mrs. Sutherland did not
send me here. I came of my own volition. I was denied my
right of motherhood by the Gracious Lord to serve some other
purpose. I do not wish for a child to live without knowing his
parents. She said.
Ray nodded. Can you bring me the child?
That would be stealing Mr. Sutherland. I have no right over
your child and Cassandra doesnt wish to face you. What I can
do is I can send you to your child but the rest are up to you.
77 Ana Bennette 2014

Ariella, I am grateful to you for your help.
It is only my duty to God that I serve. In my own heart I
believe that Angels are furthering themselves from God in their
vain attempt of being God themselves. That day comes in the
life of all creatures, even humans. Humans however have one
redeeming quality in the eyes of the Lord. It is their faith. May
God help you but know this I can only provide you a one way
ticket into our dimension. You will have to forge your way
back here with the help of someone I cannot approach. Celia is
your Godmother. She along with her husband will help you. I
can give you my teleporter and one of Celia. The first will help
you to travel to your son and the other will take you to my
sister. Once there you will be helped for it is the house of
Michael, benefactor of all humans.
How will you return if you give me your teleporter and how it
is that you have my Godmothers teleporter?
I will wait for you till you return. I have no one in either
dimension that will miss me. As far as my sisters device is
concerned I stole it from her a long time ago when she was
betrothed to her husband. She accused me of stealing but I
never confessed. I have lived a cursed existence for my sin. It
is time I undid my evil deed. My sister has been so kind to me
but never have I been able to see eye to eye with her. Will you
78 Ana Bennette 2014

please beg for forgiveness on my behalf? tears rolled down
Ariellas cheeks. Ray reached out and touched the drop of
water with the tip of his finger. Then he brought it to his lips
and kissed it.
Tears of repentance are one of the purest substances in all
universes and that of an Angel is even more pure. The Lord is
forgiving of sins if you repent. Your repentance ensures your
redemption. As a son of the Holy Father, in the name of the
Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, I declare you redeemed. Be
at peace. Your sin is forgiven you. So saying Ray folded his
hand and prayed in front of her. Ariella saw his skin gleam
with light as a rainbow halo appeared over his head. If anything
Ariella knew this was not a mere mortal that Cassandra
shunned. But she had no way to tell her that being a mere
servant of the house that Cassandra was soon to rule.
I shall now take my leave. Please make yourself at home.
Ray said after finishing his prayers. He lost no time and started
for the Sixth heaven. Ariella saw the light around her and
realization dawned on her. The resemblance to her love
Michael made her question her faith on her master. Did
Raphael lie to her? Was this her own illegitimate son?
Ray soon found himself in the sixth heaven. The soil there was
purple, no doubt a royal colour in the land. Everything
79 Ana Bennette 2014

surrounding the place had a royal feel. Large courtyards and
fountains and massive gateways looked as if he were in ancient
Greece. He saw winged creatures around him everywhere and
decided the best way to find his way here was to simply go and
ask. He summoned his wings and asked the first angel he saw
the whereabouts of Raphaels dwellings. He was easily led.
Once in front of the house of Raphael it was not difficult to
find his son for he had been wailing with hunger while the
mother failed to realize her sons needs.
He is hungry Cassandra, he heard a voice speak. He did not
see the face to which the voice belonged. He looked inside the
door to notice Samael or whom he thought Samuel at first but
no Dark aura surrounded this creature. That is when realization
came to him that Raphael and Samael are twins. The Angel
went away leaving Cassie to feed her son. Ray hid in the light
around him. It was another of his gifts to assume invisibility
that Cassie had granted him, or so he presumed. Soon Cassie
left lying down her sleeping infant son in a cradle.
Ray tip toed up to him and assumed his form. As soon as he
saw his son he gasped. His son, like him, was covered in
tattoos of the same vibgyor colour as he was, only his did not
depict rain and clouds and rainbow but rather all form of life
from insects to reptiles to the resemblance of man. The child
80 Ana Bennette 2014

opened his eyes on hearing his fathers voice and started
giggling. For a moment Ray had a doubt. Was this Angel child
better left off among the angels? But everyone other than him
failed to realize his powers and he was soon to be exiled. Ray
took out the other star from inside his coat and pressed the
centre. Soon he was teleported to another realm altogether.
What Ray assumed at first was that he was home. There were
farmers tilling the soil in large farms all around. There were
birds flying in the blue sky. There were some cows grazing in
the distant green fields. The only thing that told apart this realm
was that the farmers hovered a little above the ground and that
there were no clouds in the sky. No one had a prominent wing
in this realm so he called back his own. He went to the first
farmer that he saw and asked him in the ancient tongue of
angels where Michael lived. The creature stared at him. Then
another one of them came forward and whispered into his ears.
Realization dawned on him and he pointed to an old farmhouse
down a winding path. The sun was glaring down by now and
his son had woken up and was crying. Not able to calm him
down Ray called forth rain. The farmers standing around him
looked on in wonder as the rain started to soothe the crying
child. The child laughed and around the just sown fields
blossomed with fresh yield. Ray looked in awe at his son. The
81 Ana Bennette 2014

farmers got excited and carried Ray up on their shoulder. That
was how he was brought to the court of Michael.
The court was empty. Ray climbed down clutching his son and
went over to the porch. Outside the porch lay a vast garden
with every flower in the world and in the middle stood a swing
and on the swing sat a girl of no more than twelve. Behind the
girl a man stood pushing the swing. He looked like a man with
blonde hair and wide shoulders. His feet were placed firmly on
the ground. Beside him stood a figure Ray recognized. Aunt
Celia, he called out.
Celia as well as the man and the child turned back to find him
standing on the porch. If Ray was surprised on seeing
Raphaels resemblance to his twin brother the sight of Michael
blew his breath away. A darker shade of blonde and darker
blue eyes but the rest was his splitting image or was he his
splitting image. The man looked at Celia and then towards Ray.
Celias head was bowed down. Ray went closer to his
doppelganger only to be introduced by Celia, I present to you
your son, my Lord. He is the God son of mine whom I speak of
often
Both men gasped at the news. Neither knew of the others
existence it seemed. But how? mouthed both father and son
when Celia asked them both to be patient for the whole truth.

XIV. The Forbidden Child

You may have tried your best to hide from me your affair with
my twin sister but truth eventually leaks out. Celia began to
accuse Michael. I was married to you by then and my sister was
officially married to Raphael. That was when my first daughter
was still born and I went to pay a visit to my parents. There I heard
my parents sorrow in the night, after they thought I was asleep.
Their main cause of sorrow was my sisters pitiful state. I never
asked her about it later for fear of her pride shattering but truth is
that she was nothing more than a servant in the house of Raphael.
The mating failed because of lack of power.
I had convinced one of our households faithful servants to
tell me the truth as to what had truly happened to Ariella. I found
out how you had abandoned her and returned her powers when she
was ripe with your child.
That is a lie, Michael protested. She never informed me of
any child or else I wouldnt have left her. She said she wanted
freedom and Raphael. so saying Michaels head bowed in defeat
and he looked away.
83 Ana Bennette 2014

But truth is that she had a child of you, a child born without
wings and without any mark. All assumed that his lack of power
was a sign of Gods punishment for Ariellas transgressions for
then she was betrothed to Raphael and you to me and she broke the
sanctity of the promise that betrothal is.
I thought she was you but when I realized my mistake I
wished to do right by her. Michael begged.
Then why did you leave her?
She asked of me, in return of her truthfulness to me, to release
her from the mating. It was upon my honour to do so. Michael
defended.
Ariella was told that her child was still born and Raphael
made arrangements for the child to be dispatched to a realm where
his lack of power and wings would not discriminate him among
others. He was sent to earth. He lived at an orphanage till the age
of three. That is where I found him.
I would have brought him here. I saw his lack of wings as
further proof that he was your son for you can call back your wings
at will and often tend to do without them. I saw his powers too. He
had powers that Raphael and my foolish parents never saw. He
made rainbows out of sunlight, played with reflections and
sometimes lit up his room with his life light. He wasnt normal and
84 Ana Bennette 2014

he didnt fit in on Earth. But he was not my son. If I took him away
from where his guardians placed him it would be stealing. I found
a home with the means to provide his needs and I became his
Godmother. On his eighteenth birthday I asked whether he wished
to be a messenger of God or a servant of God. He chose to be a
servant of God. I asked him whether he wished for power or
responsibility. He chose responsibility. I asked him whether he
chose to be supernatural or human. He chose to be Human
Michael. And He is your son.
Michael looked at Ray with tears in his eyes. I am sorry son.
He whispered looking down. Ray realized that he wasnt a freak at
all and he realized how he could manifest Cassies gift. The
difference between Cassie and him had just been removed. Cassie
couldnt refuse the son of Michael. But then again, he had chosen
to be human. Could Cassie live with that? Just then his son giggled
and Ray looked down to remember what he was there for.
Celia, this is my son. He smiled bringing the child closer to
his God Grandmother. Celia was both surprised and delighted to
see her grandson. She picked him up in her arms and coddled him.
By the time she remembered Ray again they were inside the court.
Michael came up beside Ray and placed a hand on his sons
shoulder. Well done son. He said and embraced him. Father and
85 Ana Bennette 2014

son both broke down into sobs. That was when the little girl on the
swing spoke out, Why is everyone crying?
Michaela was the only living daughter of Michael. Ray was
introduced to his sister who complained a lot about not having met
her elder brother sooner.
When they sat down for supper Celia finally asked. What and
who brought you to heaven Ray? You have the power to travel
home at will but still you need a reason to come. I understand that
finding your father was not the only reason you are here for. And
also what made you bring your infant son along?
I came here to take my son. Cassie, the girl I told you about, is
an Angel of Sixth heaven. He said in a way as if to finally break
the bubble. Celia was surprised but pleased. I knew about Cassie.
So you married beneath you just as my sister. I helped her recover
after Samael refused her and almost killed her. Ariella promised
me she would arrange for her refuge but I shouldnt have trusted
her. She remarked.
Ariella sent me here. She visited me to tell me about my son.
Ray explained. He described her visit and her remorse.
I still do not understand why her mating was unsuccessful.
Her purity was redeemed. Celia exclaimed after her sisters
plight.
86 Ana Bennette 2014

It was because she was with child when I returned her
powers. Michael explained. You cannot return a womans
virginity when she is with child. God is the only one who may
make way for virgin birth and no one else. The power I returned
got transmitted to the child instead, to you son
Can there be nothing done for Ariella? She has suffered
enough for her mistakes. She still thinks that God denied her the
gift of mother hood for her sins. Ray asked Michael.
Michael looked at Celia. It was her that spoke out. This was
destined Michael. Ariella was chosen for Raphael for her gift of
redemption and healing. Perhaps that gift was never meant for him.
Ray was destined to be born of the union of the house of Michael
and the house of Raphael and more powerful than both. Talk to
Raphael and see whether he releases her from his bond. I would
love to have my sister back and it would be nice to see you smile
more often since now you know of your heir.
You could have told me earlier. I hid the incident from you to
protect you and the guilt had been eating into me. Michael said.
I was jealous. I was jealous of the woman who bore you a son
while I couldnt. Celia confessed.
It never mattered to me Celia. Only you mattered to me.
Michael said earnestly.
87 Ana Bennette 2014

Celia took off her ring and gave it to Ray. Give this to Ariella
when you return. She bore the house of Michael its heir. It belongs
to her.
Ray accepted the ring and then Michael gave him another ring
of the same sort. This is for your wife son.
I have lost her father. I shall never see her again, especially
not where I am going. Ray said dejectedly.
She has to come to you to claim back her powers. Give it to
her then. It is her right. There is no shame in losing the battle of
love son. I admit there is pain but in all pain remember that the
love of the Father is always with you and He will see you through
all hurt. He laughs with you, He cries with you and when you pray
to Him He talks to you. Keep your heart open for His words and
His light will always keep you content.
Amen replied Ray. Ariella is waiting for me. He told his
family. Celia nodded and readied to send him back home. Once he
was gone Michael hugged his wife who had cared for his love-
child for all these years.

XV. The Kiss of Redemption

Ariella had refused to go back to live in her sisters household.
Her guilt prevented her from doing so. She was delighted to meet
her grandson however. She was deprived of her motherhood by
Raphaels twisted sense of justice and now the true Judge of all
had redeemed her of her sins and had provided her the means to
shower her love on a child she could call her own, her own grand-
child.
She received Michaels ring which she valued more than
anything else. It was a ring similar to the one worn by her sister
and with it on her hand there was little to make them apart save for
their eyes. That was not true. Her sister was destined to rule a
mans heart and she was destined to serve the men in her life.
Maybe the difference lay in her attitude towards life but it wasnt
entirely her fault. She remembered the day when she had gone to
visit her betrothed, Raphael. Only the man that greeted her was
Samael and in her ignorance she had let him corrupt her mind with
his darkness. Once touched by darkness it always remains. Nothing
could redeem her completely, not even the love of her son. But she
had faith that one day all would be right for the Lord is righteous
and good and of light.
89 Ana Bennette 2014

It was a difficult sight to see Ray ponder upon himself. He was
so withdrawn within his own shell that nothing penetrated save for
his need to respond to his responsibilities, towards his mother, his
son, his friends and his world.
Day after day went by and Ray went on performing his duty.
Finally the day came when it was time for the son of Michael to be
faced with his greatest challenge. Generally fortune knocks at the
door once. But the persistent knock had to belong to something far
different. It was Raphael and behind him stood Cassandra.
What new plague you bring upon my world again? Ray
asked facing Cassandra. Raphael stood awestruck at the face he
had often bowed down to. How could that face belong to a mortal?
Still he had to speak on behalf of the woman he had given shelter
to.
This creature no longer wishes to remain your mate. I as the
Angel of Redemption have come to ensure she receives back her
carrier powers along with her freedom. As a mortal you have no
right to keep her powers or her freedom from her.
Is this the lecture that you are used to giving when you trick
the women betrothed to you to sacrifice their love and their child
before turning them into your personal servants? Ray asked
sarcastically as Raphael looked on in honour.
90 Ana Bennette 2014

Rays quick eyes caught on the flush of anger in Cassandras
eyes as Ariellas topic became apparent. Ray changed his
demeanour and invited in his guest within his home. Cassandra had
changed much since he had last seen her. She had become fuller;
the blush on her cheeks, the blush of rage had the rosiness of fresh
marigolds. Looking into her beautiful face Rays heart started
beating loudly. Raphael on the other hand looked away unable to
meet his gaze. As they took a seat on the drawing room couch Ray
called for his Ariella. Both guests were awed by her presence
there. They had all suspected her of stealing the mortal child but
her presence here meant she had returned the child to its true
home. Ray requested Ariella to bring some wine for the guests and
a coffee for him. Ariella left smiling. Somehow through her smile
she managed to tell Ray Be strong son, be righteous.
Neither of the guests asked Ray what Ariella had being doing
at his place. Ray spoke to Cassandra. I know why you have come
here. You want to fulfil your parents dying wish of mating with
Raphael. Cassandra had been looking down at the palm of her
hand placed on her lap. On hearing Ray speak to her she looked
up.
You know a lot it seems! So what will it take for you to agree
to free me from the bond? she asked.
91 Ana Bennette 2014

You are ignoring one small fact Cassandra. I am not an angel.
I have chosen to be human. On earth your power means little or
none to me. Neither do I have much use of it. I can return it to you
anytime I want. But I have given you a promise of a lifetime in the
presence of God. I cannot take from you the promise. You have
said that you live for eternity and I for only a short while. However
once I die you shall be turned to dust. I cannot let that happen
either. I cannot be the cause of your early death or let you live in
the fear of death every single day. I will undo the mating, I will
return your powers but I cannot undo our marriage. If you choose
another man, creature it is you who is living in sin. However I shall
be waiting to forgive you and take you back. A union is from the
soul and not from the body which you need to realize Cassandra.
Are you ready for your powers to be returned?
Cassandra nodded and Raphael looked on with distaste as tears
of shame clouded her vision and spilled over to stain her pale
cheeks. Angels did not cry. The human had infected Cassandra
with emotions that did not befit an Angel of the sixth heaven. Ray
continued to speak. I took your powers in private and I would like
to return them in private as well. Will you accompany me to the
library Cassandra?
92 Ana Bennette 2014

Raphael tried to object. He was the Angel of redemption. How
could some other creature redeem in his absence. You cannot
return her powers in my absence. He said.
Ray looked at him and smirked. Is it so? Watch me.
Ray asked Cassandra for her hand. She took out her hand from
her glove and placed it on his palm. With her healing touch his
broken heart joined. The hopelessness and the despair at losing his
loved one left him. His eyes gleamed with light as he led her to the
library.
Inside the room Ray closed the doors. Cassandra had never
been to the library and was awed to find it mostly empty. No books
covered the glass walls. It was blank space and light everywhere. It
was the kind of space where one could really breathe. A huge
computer stood in the corner of the room. That comprised Rays
entire library. Ray turned Cassandra around to face him.
Do you love me Cassandra? he asked.
Cassandra looked at Ray trying to find answer to Rays
question as if it were written on him. In her eyes Ray saw her
desire for him. So Ray continued. No responsibility is greater than
upholding love Cassie. Your parents never knew you could find
your love and if they knew how you are sacrificing your love for
93 Ana Bennette 2014

their last wish they would be hurting. Dont do this unless your
heart tells you to.
Suddenly a flame burned within Cassie. I want power, Ray.
Raphael can give me the place that an Angel of my lineage should
have. I cannot live a life of anonymity with you here on earth.
Rays face suddenly lost all emotions. He pulled Cassandras
hand and stretched it between them. Cassandra suddenly
remembered that all the while they were still holding hands. Ray
made Cassandra kneel down and he did the same. Then he started
to speak. As a son of the Holy Father, in the name of the Father,
the Son and the Holy Spirit, I declare you redeemed. Be at peace. I
request the Holy Father to undo the bond that was joined through
his will and with the authority of being his devoted son I Ray
Michael Sutherland declare you are no longer my mate.
As soon as Ray said these words peace poured into Cassandras
heart along with power. Cassandras eyes were closed so she could
not see the power that flowed from Ray to her. When she opened
her eyes she summoned her wings. They were no longer the white
wings of a healer but the light blue wings of the House of the sky.
She looked up at Ray who looked sombre. Somehow she couldnt
face him any longer. A part of her feared, hoped that Ray would
refuse to return her powers.
94 Ana Bennette 2014

Suddenly Ray pulled her back towards him. He saw the fear in
her eyes; fear that her emotions would overcome her. Ray could
see the darkness in her heart and knew that the only way to get her
back was to remove the darkness from within her heart. He pulled
her in closer till their lips met. Cassandra could feel the sparks all
over again but this time Ray was under control. This kiss was not
about mating or love. Through his kiss he probed Cassandras
heart and mind for darkness and destroyed it with the light of his
life. When he was finished Cassandra was swooning in his arms
but Ray let her go. Raphael is waiting for you outside. You must
leave. He said curtly. In his words there was not an ounce of
emotion. Cassandra was awestruck. Her mind was clouded with
the kiss but Ray did not touch her anywhere other than her hand
and her lips. Her eyes widened in realization as she realized that
the kiss that made her swoon was not a kiss of passion but a kiss of
redemption.
Cassandra walked in a daze led by Ray who handed her over to
Raphael, her betrothed. Then he said in a tone of confidence. I
will wait for you Cassandra but you must leave now to realize what
you yourself want. Just then Ariella stepped in with the child in
her arms. On seeing her own son Cassandras tears overwhelmed
her but Raphael did not let her touch him. Cassandra looked in
despair as her despair moved her away from her family. Soon they
disappeared into thin air as they teleported back to their own
95 Ana Bennette 2014

dimension. Ray slumped into the nearby chair. Ariella went over
and sat beside her son trying to console him for his loss.
96 Ana Bennette 2014

XVI. Epilogue
Cassandra had never noticed when Ray had slipped a ring up
her finger. Yes she was still his wife but she was still Raphaels
betrothed. She was to be married all over again in the customs of
her world. As Raphael was the king of her planet a higher authority
had to declare them conjugated. That authority was the ruler of the
Seventh heaven, Michael.
Raphael was afraid of Michael, or so it seemed. Cassandra
however found little reason to be afraid of the man who was kind
to her in her times of need and who was her husbands
doppelganger. The mystery that remained was why such a
powerful creature would go down to earth for her assistance.
Cassandra never told Raphael of her acquaintance with
Michael but she looked forward to visiting him and knowing why
he had helped her. She also wished to ask him something else. She
wanted to ask him if she were sinning not that she didnt already
know. But she couldnt hurt Ray in any way and she had already
hurt him enough.
