Why I choose Medicine Major at UPH as a Stepping Stone for My Career

By Lisye K

My passion for medicine began in junior high school as a 12 year old student,
when I heard from the doctor that my grandpa had cancer. Prior to this, I had little
interest in any career, but after I did my internship in Siloam several months ago, I
saw medicine as a challenge, an outlet for my interest in Biochemistry, and also a
way to use my people skills. I want a lot of things to be done in my life. I want to live
a life that combines my combination of language, people, and my knowledge to make
a sustainable and hopefully measurable impact on others, I also eagerly wants to
have a balanced life that cultivates my many passions, challenges myself, allows me
to learn new things, and grow spiritually. I also love to hang out sometimes and keep
a sustainable community of friends. To make all of that happen, I choose to major in
Medicine at UPH.
There are a lot of good university that offer this program, but why do I choose
UPH? We all know that every university in Indonesia has, what we called, a vision.
Each university of course, has different vision. Personally I really care what vision do
my future university has, because that determine the education concept they applied
in the curriculum. UPH has vision that suits my needs: True Knowledge, Faith in God,
Godly Character and Holistic education. With these visions, I believe I can be a better
physician not just in academic, but in my character, social, and spiritual life too.
Since I learn theology at UPH College, I know what is the meaning of truth.
What is truth? Truth cannot be separate from the concept of absolute because there
is only one truth, that is Gods truth. I am a person who wants to know the truth and
has willingness to apply it in my life. I want to learn new things and contribute
something to my environment. With true knowledge I can do that without fear of
being wrong. Just want to share; I really hate doctors character nowadays. Not that I
want to stereotype, but there are several doctors that are not doing their job
properly. They are greedy and think about money all the time. One of my friends was
the victim. He was given vitamins instead of medicine to treat his sickness and he
had to pay three thousand rupiahs for that. I dont want to be that doctor. I need to
have faith in God so I can apply my true knowledge properly. I need to be in an
environment that can help me build a Godly Character. UPH provided me with a
Holistic Education and this is my primary reason why I choose to pursue my
education here.
My second reason to be in this university is because UPH is a well-facilitated
campus. Medicine and Nursing have their own building and are provided with a
great library and excellent lecturers that can support my learning process. One thing
that I also like to highlight is that UPH is a NON SMOKING campus and cares for our
health too. They encourage us to exercise by providing us with a lot of sports
facilities. If I want to refresh myself, I can play basketball or go to gym or even swim
at Olympic size pool in UPH main campus.
Last but not least, I love to be part of UPH because now I dont have to worry
where and when I can do my co-ass later on. UPH already has a lot of hospital
partners and what we called Rumah Sakit Umum Siloam that provide a good
service with a low cost for poor family that need medical attention. These are my
main reason why I choose UPH to pursue my Medical career in the future. I believe
this university with their vision, can help me to becoming a doctor that comes with a
wonderful character.
