Three

for BOE
Contested election
will decide two seats
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
It will be a contested Shamong
Township Board of Education
election this November as three
residents filed as candidates for
two open seats, according to the
Burlington County Board of Elec-
tions.
Incumbent board president
Melissa Ciliberti will seek re-elec-
tion against two other candidates,
Susan Daniels and David Rosen-
thal.
Current board member Greg
Vitagliano will not seek re-elec-
tion. Vitagliano found himself
embroiled in controversy earlier
this year after publishing dis-
paraging remarks about the dis-
tricts teachers on his Facebook
page during contract negotia-
tions between the board and the
Shamong Township Education
Association. STEA president

The Sun
Last years hurricane season
was a calm one for the towns of
Burlington County, but the les-
sons from Hurricanes Sandy and
Irene are still fresh in the minds
of residents.
The Atlantic hurricane season
lasts from June 1 to Nov. 30, and
New Jerseys tropical storm activ-
ity runs typically from August
through late October.
According to Kevin Tuno,
Burlington County Office of
Emergency Management coordi-
nator, Hurricane Irene had a larg-
er impact on the county com-
pared to Sandy, which affected
communities closer to the bay, in-
cluding Bass River and Washing-
ton Township.
The biggest thing is promot-
ing more of an awareness to resi-
dents, Tuno said, adding resi-
dents need to heed warnings and
properly prepare for a serious
weather event.
Preparing your home
Tuno suggests residents have
supplies on hand for a minimum
of 72 hours.
At this point, I suggest dou-
bling that, Tuno said. You
should have nonperishable food,
food that you may not have to
cook if you lose electricity and
have an electric stove.
Additionally, there needs to be
enough water, one gallon per per-
son per day, in the event water
supply becomes unavailable, es-
pecially in rural areas.
Most of the time, water con-
tamination happens because
theres failure to water treatment
plants or in a rural area when
wells in the yard get flooded out,
Tuno said. You have a possibility
of your well being contaminated
by the septic tank.
He advises residents to boil
water and be aware of water advi-
sories. If residents are forced to
boil water, be sure to do it for 10
minutes.
Fresh batteries, portable radios
and flashlights should also be
available.
You should also have extra
batteries on hand for any items

other than flashlights or radio if
the kids have something that
needs to be charged, Tuno said.
According to Tuno, various
stores sell items to keep phones
and other electronics charged
through a hand crank.
Keep extra medications on
hand or get some immediately
through a doctor or pharmacist if
you have the ability to, Tuno
said.
Make a plan, prepare a kit
When the Weather Channel
and local news stations begin
broadcasting the possibility of a
hurricane, go over your emer-
gency plan.
According to the New Jersey
Hurricane Survival Guide, get to-
gether with your family and cre-
ate a communications plan ahead
of time. Keep a written record of
all important phone numbers and
designate an individual outside
the state to serve as a family point
of contact. Make sure family
members know who this person
is and how to contact them. After
a disaster or evacuation, all fami-
ly members should make contact
with the designated individual.
Try choosing a certain time for
everyone to check in.
Additionally, a family should
have a kit prepared. Build it up
over a period of time, Tuno rec-
ommends.
You can go online to a number
of different locations and find
kits already made, Tuno said.
By the time youre done, youll
be well prepared, especially if
you need to stay in your home a
number of days.
Visit www.ready.gov and
search disaster kit for checklists
to help prepare.
Shelter preparation
Burlington County shelters
hosted approximately 400 people
from Ocean County in 2012, most
of whom came without dry
clothes, towels or toiletries due to
flooding and the emergency situa-
tion.
Most shelters dont come
equipped with towels or clothes
for people, Tuno said. Luckily,
we were able to get towels and
warm clothes for the people that
came. We got some towels from
correctional facilities and hospi-
tals the next day.
Tuno notes its hard to be sure
if there are going to be cots or
blankets and pillows at the shel-
ter.
We suggests blankets, pillows,

medications, personal hygiene and a
change of clothes, Tuno said. Parents
should bring things that will keep you en-
tertained such as books or a deck of cards,
especially if you bring children.
Additionally, come with snacks and a
few bottles of water in case food and water
havent arrived yet.
Family and pets
If the storm is touted to be severe for
this area, family members, if you have eld-
erly, should convince them to stay with you
until the storm is over, Tuno said. They
should bring whatever they need medicine
wise to be self sufficient for a number of
days.
Pets need a plan as well. Be sure to have
a supply of food and medication on hand.
If you have a pet and have to go to a
shelter, make sure its pet friendly, Tuno
said. When we establish shelters here in
Burlington County, we have certain shel-
ters as pet friendly shelters. You may not
be able to be with them overnight, but we
allow them.
According to Tuno, animals cannot
sleep or stay in the main area due to aller-
gies or pets not getting along.

Family members, pets need plans, too
W
ith schools preparing to
open their doors soon, now
is a good time to talk about
the upcoming academic year.
This week, were featuring our sec-
ond Back to School special section,
which is included inside this issue.
Next week, well have more compre-
hensive back to school coverage, in-
cluding a Q&A with the superintend-
ent of the school district to keep you
informed of all the changes and excite-
ment on the horizon for the 2014-2015
school year.
At The Sun, were all about commu-
nity news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meet-
ings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.
When students achieve in the class-
room, in the arts, in sports, etc., we
want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire com-
munity. Recently, we created an On
Campus section of our paper to do
just that to recognize the hard-work-
ing students in a way that stands out
from other sections of our paper.
Making the honor roll, winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-cur-
ricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.
If youre a teacher or principal, and
you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your home-
town should know about, tell us about
it. If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well fig-
ure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young peo-
ple is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordi-
nary to help someone or have an out-
standing accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.
