Leadership in engineering recognized

December 6, 2011

Faculty, staff, students, donors and supporters of the
Schulich School of Engineering gathered Dec. 1 for the 2011
Deans Holiday Reception and recognition of leaders in
engineering.
Every single day I encounter something that is noteworthy:
an ambitious student, an original piece of research or a
visionary company, says Guy Gendron, dean of the Schulich
School of Engineering. I see with my own eyes why Calgary
is known around the world for its engineering leadership.
Frank Meyer is the 2011 recipient of the Canadian
Engineering Leader Award. He was the first president and
CEO of Foundation CMG, which became Computer
Modelling Group Ltd. (CMG), one of the worlds largest
providers of reservoir simulation software and advanced
processes modeling.
Under his leadership, Foundation CMG created two research
chairs at the university in collaboration with Alberta Innovates
Technology Futures and the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Most
recently, Foundation CMG made a gift of $1.5 million for two
new laboratories and facility upgrades including the new
Foundation CMG/Frank and Sarah Meyer Collaboration
Centre.
The 2011 Deans Award for Corporate Leadership was
awarded to Suncor Energy, a longtime supporter of the
school through the Engineering Associates Program, the
Engineering Career Centre Advisory Board and placing
students through the Internship Program.
In the years leading up to the merger between Suncor and
Petro-Canada, Petro-Canada donated a building worth $6.9 million to the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing
Engineering and $1 million to the Petro-Canada Emerging Leaders Awards Program, which is now known as the Suncor Energy
Emerging Leaders Awards.
Suncor has helped undergraduate students with the Suncor Energy Foundation Scholarship in Geology and Engineering and
funding for the International Student Energy Summit of ISEEE (Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy).
Suncors support for oil sands research at the school has amounted to more than $1 million and another $1.4 million has gone
towards various initiatives in the Haskayne School of Business and the Department of Sociology.
