Established
Funded by the Colorado Health Foundation and the Kresge Foundation
They have community-based nutrition education run by non-profits that teach low-income audiences how
to buy, prepare, and eat healthy foods

Fresh Approach- California
Founded in 2008
This organization provides low-income families not only with healthier options for food, but also
educational programs that teach people how to make smarted diet choices

Focus on Fitness, Cooking, and Nutrition
Hold specific classes, much like Nourish Boston wants to do
Partners with the Center for a Healthy Lifestyle

Go into schools and teach students how to live and eat healthier
Interestingly, they focus on getting children in schools to sign up in their classes, and get parents and
other people to volunteer to teach these classes
Although its a bit more different than Nourish Boston, there is a little overlap regarding finding people to
teach the classes and to create sustainability in the organization

Community Nutrition Education Services: Arkansas
Provides healthy eating initiatives by partnering with local organizations and businesses (restaurants, food
stores)

Central California Regional Obesity Prevention Program:
Works to increase access to healthy foods and physical activity.
Partnered with public health departments, community based organizations, etc.

Healthy Living Inc
Throughout the 2013 season, we will demonstrate healthy cooking techniques at both the DC Greens
Glover Park-Burleith farmers' markets and Penn Quarter FRESHFARM the Georgetown University farmers'
market in Washington, DC.

Foundation for Wellness Education- Nationwide

This foundation seeks to educate people across America about the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.
All of their volunteers are doctors that dedicate their time to teach people about subjects ranging from
how the body works, family wellness, and nutrition.
While this organization does not have a specific focus on the low-income population, they have a
successful network of doctors who are willing to volunteer their time. Thus, Nourish could look to utilize
them as a resource.

Doctors for Health And Wellness Foundation
Non-profit organization that seeks to educate general public about health, at no cost whatsoever
To be part of this organization, doctors must donate a set number of hours on an hourly basis
Services in the form of interactive workshops: (1) Proactive approaches such as exercises to improve
health, strategies to minimize stressors, (2) Preventative analysis such as ergonomic assessments
Services in the form of health screenings: (1) vision screening, (2) hearing test, (3) postural assessment

SPARC (Sickness Prevention Achieved through Regional Collaboration)- Piloted in Atlanta, based in New England
Provides interesting model with working with local health providers

Healthy Living Nutrition Counseling and Consulting
Run by 4 Dietitians in the San Francisco Area,
Offer individual nutrition counseling, family nutritional counseling, meal planning, grocery store planning,
meal groups, and more
Hold Groups and Classes
Looks like they have two locations, not sure if they have partnered up with a health clinic or anything like
that, seems like they are just starting out and are relatively new
numerous exercise classes offered

Nutrition First
Based in Washington State
targets nutrition problems in underserved children
utilizes corporate gift-matching strategy
works largely to improve WIC accessibility, support, and advocacy

Shape up Somerville
Funded by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a 3 year environmental change intervention program
to prevent obesity
What they did:
Food service changes: taste tests done on new vegetables during lunch, ice cream limited to once a
week
New class called Health eating and active time, centered around increasing fruit and vegetable
consumption, decreasing sugars, increasing physical activity, decreasing sedentary time
Community work: Somerville worked with local restaurants to implement more healthy options: offer
dishes with smaller portion size, offer fruits as side dishes, have visible signs that highlighted healthier
options

Sun Health
Based in Arizona, dedicated to community AND senior care healthy living
Partner with various recreational sites and rehab centers to hold events for seniors; we could look into
which sites they proposed these partnerships into and seek help in creating our own proposal to Bowdoin
Only real difference from Nourish is that Sun focuses mostly on, or at least it seems, senior care

The Food Trust
(Ranked #2 high impact nonprofit in America in childrens health and nutrition
What they do:
1. Improve food environments (Primarily in Philadelphia)
2-hour cooking workshop for adults. Research has found 43% of participants eat at least
2 cups of vegetables a day, funded by SNAP-Ed, a federal partnership that subsidizes

2. Work with grocery store owners to increase healthy offerings
Link corner store owners to community partners, local farmers, and fresh food suppliers

Focuses on many community health issues
Big emphasis on childhood obesity
Is partnered with state to implement obesity prevention plan and is in a 5 year agreement with Center for
Disease Control (could be terminated at this point).

Although they did not partner up with a health clinic or anything, its interesting that they decided to get

4x $25000 grants are given at the start of each year to resident-led collaborations focused on strengthening
neighborhoods including Dorchester. Deadline to apply is March 28, 2014
