JAWS (1975)
A shark is prowling the waters off Amity Island and it is up to
police chief Martin Brody to hunt down and kill this deadly
predator. What more is there to say about this American clas-
sic? It has everything you look for in a movie - kids in peril,
drunken sea shanties and Richard Dreyfuss in a cage. If all that
wasnt enough - how about this? Thanks to the 4K digital resto-
ration of the flm, youll see and hear JAWS like never before
just dont blame us when you develop trepidations about a trip
to the beach this summer. 9/4 & 9/10
SPIRITED AWAY (2001)
SPIRITED AWAY is a trip, in the literal, metaphorical and
indeed lysergic senses of that word. Ostensibly, its the story
of a girls voyage into the spirit world to rescue her parents,
who, in typical idiotic adult fashion, drive on a road where they
shouldnt drive, eat food they shouldnt eat and end up getting
turned into pigs. But this premise is, as usual, mainly an excuse
for Miyazakis imagination and id to free-associate, channeling
and repurposing elements of Eastern and Western mythology,
Lewis Carrolls Alice, E. Nesbit, Where the Wild Things Are,
George Herrimans Krazy Kat comic strip, Mervyn Peakes
Gormenghast trilogy and God only knows what else.
9/3 & 9/9
CLUELESS QUOTE-ALONG (1995)
You guys, this movie is, like, a cinematic masterpiece of the
20th century. Before reinventing Jane Austen became clich,
Amy Heckerling adapted the classic story of Emma into a
hilarious, insanely clever satire of adolescence in Beverly Hills.
This flm spawned fashion trends, countless slang terms (AS
IF!) and gave Alicia Silverstone a reason to exist beyond Aero-
smith videos. Even after 19 years, we are still majorly, totally,
butt-crazy in love with CLUELESS, and quote it incessantly,
whether rolling with the homies or pausing at stop signs. 9/15
GREASE SING-ALONG (1978)
Sing about the risks of being a beauty school dropout or, oh,
those summer nights. Well also provide you with props themed
to the show so you get the full interactive experience. Call up
your Pink Ladies and T-Birds and join us at Rydell High, where
well cheer on Greased Lightening, swoon over Sandy and
Danny and sing ourselves silly. 9/1
Video Vortex:
DOCTOR BLOODBATH (1987)
VHS-only insanity projected from VHS for only one buck!!
Nick Millards bizarre flmmaking methods -- terrible composi-
tions, spazoid jump cuts, complicated plotlines about nothing
-- reject convention and the world-at-large. This SOV gutter
opus caps off Millards long legacy of 1980s insanity (DEATH
NURSE, DEATH NURSE II, CEMETERY SISTERS), which
repeatedly transformed mundane elements into exhilarating,
anti-human events. Its 80s insanity, clinical horror gore at its
very best,... or worst. 9/17
SINGIN IN THE RAIN (1952)
To say this movie is merely a masterpiece is doing it a dis-
service. To lump it in with all the other movies that are just
great is unfair. SINGIN IN THE RAIN transcends its medium
and tap dances straight into your heart. Its a flm you can watch
on a cold night and feel it fush your face with warmth. Its a
song you can sing when rain is pouring down on you and you
couldnt care less because youre in love. This isnt one of those
classic movies you have to see because its important and
your viewing experience will feel anything but scholastic. You
need to see this movie because YOU NEED TO SEE THIS
MOVIE. 9/2 & 9/8
BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985)
Almost 30 years ago, Michael J. Fox & Christopher Lloyd
took us on an era-hopping adventure with BACK TO THE
FUTURE as the 80s raddest time travelin teen and his unlikely
sidekick - a crazy, wild-eyed, wild-haired scientist. What rose
from those fame trails is the heaviest sci-f comedy ever made
- one that is often considered the perfect movie without
hyperbole. (Find someone who doesnt love this movie and Ill
show you a slacker!). 9/11 & 9/16
DC METRO FOOD DUDE PRESENTS:
TOP GUN
Brandon Frye, known to many as the DC Metro Food Dude
travels all throughout DC, MD & VA to check out the Best
Food in the area. Hes got a healthy appetite for some serious
grub and wanted to bring one of his shows here to The Alamo.
We thought we would join him for an all night event. Were
bringing in a movie, so colossal, so iconic, so full of the biggest
brightest star ever,... youll need shades. So join us for TOP
GUN. Well provide the aviators you bring your best dressed
fghter pilots. Well have movie themed drinks and apps in
Glass Half Full with the Food Dude from 5-6:30p followed
by a best dressed fghter pilot competition in the theater. The
more outlandish and over the top pilot, the better. We then sit
back relax and fy off into the Danger Zone with TOP GUN
at 7p. If you cant make it to this screening we will have a
second screening of TOP GUN (9/24), sans Food Dude. But
as always, feel free to dress up as your favorite TG character,
whether its your Iceman whites, your Maverick fight suit or
your Kelly McGillis bomber jacket.
THE GODFATHER (1972)
Wed like to make you an offer you cant refuse: to see Francis
Ford Coppolas THE GODFATHER. Join the family for a
screening of this undisputed American classic. Still one of
the most loved, acclaimed and popular flms of all-time THE
GODFATHER feels just as fresh and groundbreaking today
as it did in 1972. It made Al Pacino a star, it cemented Marlon
Brando as the acting force of generation and shed light on the
unique and overfowing talent of Copppola. 9/18
THE GODFATHER: PART II (1974)
A completely different flm from its predecessor in terms of
narrative structure and tone THE GODFATHER, PART II
fulflls the clich of being a sequel that delivers and, in some
ways, surpassing the original. Following the drama surrounding
the Corleone family at the end of the frst flm, PART II takes
two decidedly unexpected detours: One into history, the other
into politics. 9/25
AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (1951)
Gershwins classic songs, Vincente Minnellis colorful direction
and Gene Kelly dancing his absolute heart out. This is amongst
the best and brightest of Hollywood musical opulence and
technical wizardry.Academy Award Winner for Best Picture,
Best Music, Best Cinematography and more, this flm is more
than just its accolades... its a fippin national treasure. 9/22
TRUE ROMANCE (1993)
Stealing, Cheating, Killing. Who said romance is dead? Would
you like to go get some pie with me? Its the line that every
guy used after 1993. If a girl ever said yes to a Sonny Chiba
triple feature followed by some good conversation and a slice
of pie, youd be a damned fool not to marry her right then and
there. Alabama is a prostitute sent by Clarences boss to give
him a good time on his birthday. Shes a clumsy sort, and the
last thing she ever expected on her frst week on the job was to
fall in love. Sure, you could be the jaded type who scoffs at love
at frst sight, or you could sit down and embrace the unfltered
passion roller coaster ride that is TRUE ROMANCE. Tony
Scott directs from a (pre-PULP FICTION) Quentin Tarantino
script to create one of the most indelible 90s masterpieces.
Its got the voice of a generation as Christian Slater leads an 90s
all-star cast including Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Bron-
son Pinchot, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken,
and Samuel L. Jackson.
Tree words went through my mind endlessly, repeating
themselves like a broken record: youre so cool, youre so cool,
youre so cool.
ROBOCOP (1987)
The Detroit of the future is riddled with crime and poverty
and Omni Consumer Products has just announced that theyve
purchased the Detroit PD. Alex Murphy roams the streets as
a tough-as-nails cop ready to serve and protect until he fnds
himself on the wrong end of a shotgun party. OCP owns
Murphys corpse and decides to take whats left of him to create
their crime fghter of the future. 9/23 & 9/29
TOP GUN (1986)
The role that made Tom Cruise one of the worlds biggest stars,
is the smash-hit flm that defned the modern-day blockbuster.
Cruise plays Maverick, a hotshot fier who is sent to the Navys
prestigious Top Gun program. But in order to become the
best of the best, hell need the help of his wingman Goose,
his newfound love and even his rival, Iceman!
9/20 (w/DC Food Dude) & 9/24
THE DARK CRYSTAL (1984)
Before computers took over the universe, longtime collabora-
tors (and Muppet-makers) Henson and Oz rolled up their
sleeves and created the most beautiful otherworldly flm to ever
zoom across an 80s audiences eyeballs. Its a pure-hearted,
imagination-powered journey into unexplored ideas, with the
most memorable characters this side of another dimension.
9/30
THE WIZARD (1989)
This ode to 8-bit gaming, Fred Savage takes his emotionally
stunted, virtual-savant younger brother across the United
States to play in the video championships. Hes competing to
be the top gamer in the world, and to prove it hes got to play
a brand new game no ones ever heard of: Super Mario Bros 3.
While its hard to imagine a world in which SMB3 didnt exist,
this movie actually introduced our country to the wonder that
was this great adventure. Warp Whistles, the Raccoon Suit, the
Koopa Kids, Chain Chomp, whatever the heck a Tanooki Suit
is; all of this and more were frst just dazzling images in this
wonderful movie about the true love of video games. So strap
on your Power Glove (Its so...bad!) and come remember
when video games were still imaginative and when a 12-year old
boy could star in a movie that was actually good.
TREMORS (1990)
Carnivorous, subterranean wormbeasts gobble up the
townsfolk of Perfection, Nevada, chasing hobos up telephone
poles and swallowing station wagons whole. Kevin Bacon
battles the hideous giant worms with a gusto not seen since
FOOTLOOSE. At his side is the incredible Fred Ward, BIG
TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINAs Victor Egg Chen Wong
and Reba McEntire and FAMILY TIES Michael Gross as gun-
obsessed survivalists!

More than two decades after catapulting to stardomwith THE
PRINCESS BRIDE, an aging actress (Robin Wright, playing
a version of herself) decides to take her fnal job: preserving
her digital likeness for a future Hollywood. Through a deal
brokered by her loyal, longtime agent (Harvey Keitel) and the
head of Miramount Studios (Danny Huston), her aliaas will be

flm also stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Paul Giamatti. 9/14
Theres something exhilirating -- mesmerizing, even -- about THE
CONGRESS most ludicrous fourishes.
-HitFix
An extraordinary and very touching flm that exists somewhere inthe
twilight zone between the existential brainteasers of Charlie Kaufman and
the psychedelic wonders of Hayao Miyazaki. -Empire Magazine
