Minnesota Judicial Branch Style Guide

Introduction
This document is provided as an
overview of the Minnesota Judicial
Branchs new formalized name and its
corresponding visual identity guidelines.
These standards were developed to
provide a consistent and cohesive face
for our organization when as we present
ourselves to the public and other
government entities via print and the
internet. By adhering to these guidelines
when producing documents and
publications, the Minnesota Judicial
Branch will be able to increase and unify
the visibility of the branch and the
agencies and boards within.
All attempts should be made to adhere
to these guidelines when developing
materials for public and internal
consumption. This will enable the
Minnesota Judicial Branch to maintain
a consistent presence at all times. Any
deviation from these standards should
be reviewed by the Court Information
Office prior to production.
Our New Name
When referring to the court system, the
title Minnesota Judicial Branch should
be used at all times. This reminds the
viewer that we are a unified state entity,
as well as one of the 3 important
branches of state government.

Wordmark and Logo
Several wordmark and logo ideations
were explored before deciding on the
final mark that incorporates the state
of Minnesota with the Scales of Justice.
The new logo is highly stylized and
provides a unique look compared to the
exostomg practice of using inconsitent
scale and state imagery.
The wordmark replaces the various
blackletter typefaces found on many of
our printed pieces (business cards,
letterheads, etc.). The typeface used is
Futura. Designed in 1927, it retains a
contemporary feel with its formal
simplicity.
The entire logo is set inside a solid block
of color to provide a solid visual
foundation.

Placement
It is preferred that a clear space equal
to 1/5th the width of the mark or larger
be left on all four sides to provide
maximum clarity. The one exception is
that one side of the mark may abut the
page edge or the edge of a bounding
object.
The logo should appear on the front of
all publications whenver possible. If
this is not always possible, the mark
should appear on the back cover or
inside first page.
