Preparation of Manuscripts

Your manuscript should include the following parts, in this order:
1. Title Page
Name and contact information of the author to whom
correspondence and proofs should be sent in the upper left corner
(single spaced)
Running Header (a short identification, not a title, 40 characters or
fewer including spaces; use normal font)
Title (Bold, left-justified text; capitalize only the first word and
formal names, taxa, geographic locations, etc.; restrict to 15 words
or fewer)
Names of authors (Use normal font or small caps, NOT ALL
CAPS!, left-justified text, with asterisk to identify corresponding
author)
2

Affiliations of authors (Normal font in italics, left-justified)
Abstract, no longer than 5% of the length of the text (introduction
through discussion; multiply number of lines of text by .05 to find
correct length for abstract...longer abstracts will be sent back for
shortening) summarizing key findings...note: NO heading for
"ABSTRACT"
Key words, up to 10, alphabetized
"*Correspondent:" followed by email address of corresponding
author
2. Text of manuscript
Introduction...note: NO heading for "INTRODUCTION"
Materials and Methods
Results
Discussion...note: NO "Summary" or "Conclusion" sections,
include relevant syntheses in the Discussion
3. Acknowledgments (note the spelling).
4. A summary in another language, usually a translation of the abstract, may
be included after the Discussion, if appropriate. Translations of abstracts
in Spanish or Portuguese are REQUIRED for all studies conducted in
Latin America.
5. In the Literature Cited, put authors names in upper and lower case letters
(NOT all capitals) or small caps.
6. Figure legends should be on a separate page following Literature Cited
7. Put each table on a separate page WITH the table legend.
8. Appendices, if necessary.
9. Figures should be submitted as a SEPARATE FILE. All other text,
including tables, can be in the "article file."
All parts of the manuscript, including Literature Cited, should follow style and
format of papers in the most recent volume of Journal of
Mammalogy. The Journal standard for style is the CSE style manual (2006.
Scientific Style and Format--The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and
Publishers. 7th ed. Council of Science Editors, The Rockefeller University Press.)
ALL written and tabular material must be double spaced (3 lines/2.5 cm) and in
12 pt Times New Roman font. Italicize all scientific names. In general, 2 levels of
organization are used: primary headings (centered and in large and small capitals)
and secondary headings (indented at beginning of paragraph, italicized, and
followed by period and dash). Italicized scientific names (genus and species) of
all organisms other than domesticated animals should be given with the common
name at 1st use, in both abstract and body of paper. Use Arabic numerals for all
numbers, even those <10.
In Materials and Methods, include a statement indicating whether research on live
animals followed ASM guidelines (Journal of Mammalogy 92:235253, 2011)
and was approved by an institutional animal care and use committee. All DNA
3

sequences must be submitted to GenBank, and accession numbers provided in the
manuscript before publication. Museum catalogue numbers for all voucher
specimens (including associated tissue) examined must be included in the
manuscript (in an appendix if numerous). Consult recent issues of the Journal of
Mammalogy for examples. DO NOT SUBMIT MATERIALS IN OFFICE 2007
OR 2010 FORMATSuse 972003 format . NOT ALL REVIEWERS CAN
PROCESS .docx, .xlsx, OR .pptx FILES AT THIS TIME.
Tables should conform to JM format: horizontal lines across the top, bottom, and
underneath column headings. Do NOT use vertical lines to separate columns, add
extra horizontal lines to separate parts of the table, or use grid cells. Tables need
to be formatted as text for publication, thus do not submit them as pdfs.
Figures typically will be reduced to 9 cm width for publication, so lettering and
symbols must be large enough to withstand reduction and be legible. Place figure
legends within figures, or above or below figures, rather than to the side, as
legend boxes to the side of figures causes figures to be reduced even smaller to fit
the 9-cm width. Put figure number on figures. Do not present the same data in
both graphs and tables. There should be at least 2 (preferably 3) pages of text for
each figure or table.
Authors will be charged for color figures. If the figure will appear in print, the
authors will be charged $1,000 each, which must be paid in full before a paper is
scheduled for publication. Authors have the option of having figures printed in
black/white but produced in color online. If an author selects this option, he/she
will be charged $75 per figure.
Below are formats of common types of references listed in the Literature Cited. See a
recent issue of the Journal for other examples.

COMMON PROBLEMS WITH MANUSCRIPTS
Title Page -
Contact information for corresponding author should be complete.
Effective 2010, only the first letter of major words in the title should be
capitalized (not in CAPS).
Institutional affiliations should be in italics.
5

Authors' names should not be superscripted; initials should be placed after the
author affiliation (in CAPS, italicized, and in parentheses).
Key words should be listed in alphabetical order.
Manuscript Text -
A series of literature citations in the text should be listed in alphabetical order by
last names of authors, with citations for different authors separated by semicolons
and multiple dates for the same author(s) separated by commas (e.g., Blake 2002;
Heske et al. 2004, 2006; Leslie 1998).
All text should be left-justified except for section headings, which should follow
the guidelines in Preparation of Manuscripts.

Materials and Methods and Results -
Statistical and other quantitative procedures used should be mentioned and/or
described and justified (with citations and mention of statistical software used) in
Materials and Methods rather than mentioning them for the first time in Results
when the outcomes are reported. For example, mention of the use of 2-way
ANOVAs to assess the effects of sex and season should be made in Materials and
Methods, and only outcomes of those analyses - F (with d.f. as subscripts) and P-
values - in the Results.
All details of statistical outcomes reported should be provided, and degrees of
freedom must be reported as subscripts of test statistics. For example, for an
ANOVA, F, d.f. (as subscripts of F), and the P-value should be reported, not just
the P-value or F and P-value. Degrees of freedom are important in revealing the
possibility of pseudoreplication, and confirming (or questioning) statistical
significance of an outcome. Be sure to report both numerator and denominator d.f.
(in that order) for F tests. Abbreviation style for statistics should follow that in a
recent issue of JM.

Literature Cited -
Check carefully that all references cited in the manuscript are included in the list
of Literature Cited, and that there are no entries in the Literature Cited that are not
cited in the text or legends.
Authors names should be written in SMALL CAPS, including the word AND. Use ET
AL. for references with 7 or more authors.
Spell out the names of journals completely.
When the 1st-author name is the same for consecutive references, be sure that
references are listed in alphabetical order by 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. authors' surnames
(this is especially a problem when letters are added after dates in references
published in the same year)
6

Pay close attention to proper formatting for references that are chapters in books
[e.g., Pp....in ..... (D. E. Wilson and D. M. Reeder, eds.)] and for references that
are technical reports, symposia papers, etc.. Provide city and state (if U.S.) or city
and country (if otherwise) for publishers of books.
Do not cite or list manuscripts that are submitted but not published or in press.

Tables and Figures -
Be sure that ALL tabular material is in Times New Roman 12-point font and is
DOUBLE SPACED. Table legends should be included on the same page as the
relevant table.
Be sure that all figures are legible and will be clearly readable when reduced.
Sans serif fonts such as Arial are more legible after reduction. 18-pt fonts or
greater are preferred for all text in figures. Make sure fonts and styles are
consistent among figures when more than figure is included in an article.
FAST TRACK NEW SPECIES E-ARTICLES

The Journal of Mammalogy offers an option for an expedited schedule for articles that
name new species or other taxa. These articles will be published online approximately 2
months after submission.

Authors have the responsibility to format the manuscript correctly. All style points
must be adhered to or the manuscript will be rejected before review.
Deadlines will be given to authors before an article is sent for review. To maintain the
Fast Track schedule, authors must abide by the deadlines given them at each stage.
Failure to comply with deadlines means publication may be delayed beyond the 2-
month target.
Authors may only make minimal changes at the proof stage. If authors make changes
that cause delays, their manuscripts will continue to follow the Fast Track schedule,
but the original publication timeline also will be delayed.
Fast Track E-articles will be posted online as supplemental articles to the Journal and
will not be printed as part of Journal of Mammalogy proper. The article title and DOI
will be posted in the print version of the table of contents in the next issue following
online publication, where it will be clearly stated that these are online-only
supplemental articles.
Any Fast Track E-articles published within a volume year will appear in a
supplemental reprint section in the #6 issue of Journal of Mammalogy.
Additional Information and guidelines for Journal of Mammalogy authors
submitting a new species name via the Fast Track E-Article Option

When publishing online-only papers that describe a new species or other taxon, the
Journal of Mammalogy aims to comply with the requirements of the International
7

Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). However, the ICZN does not yet
recognize online-only articles. Therefore, the Journal of Mammalogy has adapted its
publication process for online-only taxonomic papers, detailed below. Without this
change, any new scientific animal name published online-only would not be considered
available under the rules of the Code. The ICZN is currently considering a proposal to
amend the Code to accommodate electronic-only publication, but it has not yet been
adopted.

Until acceptance of this amendment, the following is an interim solution for authors that
allows us to comply with the code by providing a limited hardcopy print-run of the article
and making it publicly available. All e-articles published as an online supplement to the
Journal of Mammalogy that include the naming of a new species or other taxon will have
a limited print-run that will be sent to an established list of archive libraries at the same
time as the publication of the online-only article.

We ask that authors add the following information to the Materials and Methods
section about archiving and ZooBank registration of the article before it is accepted:
1. This article will be archived digitally at www.asmjournals.org, Portico, and
LOCKSS.
2. ZooBank Registration. We recommend that you contact ZooBank about the
registration of the new species name and request a unique Life Science
Identifier (LSID). The LSID needs to be included in the published paper.
Please note that ZooBank has not yet been officially recognized by the ICZN
but it is still important to register there because, in the future, ICZN is likely to
require registration of new names in ZooBank for all electronic-only
articles/journals.

Please insert the following text in the Materials and Methods section, in a sub-
section called "Nomenclatural Acts":
The electronic version of this document does not represent a published work according
to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), and hence the
nomenclatural acts contained in the electronic version are not available under that Code
from the electronic edition. Therefore, printed copies of this article were produced by a
method that assures numerous identical and durable copies, and those copies were
produced on the publication date noted on the first page of this article for the purpose of
providing a public and permanent scientific record, in accordance with Article 8.1 of the
Code.

In addition, this published work and the nomenclatural acts it contains have been
registered in ZooBank, the proposed online registration system for the ICZN. The
ZooBank LSIDs (Life Science Identifiers) can be resolved and the associated information
viewed through any standard web browser by appending the LSID to the prefix
"http://zoobank.org/". The LSID for this publication is: (insert here)

In the Results section, the LSID number should be listed under the new species
name, for example:
8

Anochetus boltoni Fisher sp. nov.
urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:B6C072CF-1CA6-40C7-8396-534E91EF7FBB

How to Contribute to the ZooBank Registry
Submit Information by Email: To register new authors, publications, and/or
nomenclatural acts, you can send the following details to Richard Pyle
(deepreef@bishopmuseum.org):
Full names (including middle names, if used) of all authors of the published work
containing the nomenclatural acts, exactly as they will appear in the byline of the
published work. If first or middle names are abbreviated in the byline, please
provide the full versions anyway.
Full citation details, including full title and full journal name of the published
work containing the nomenclatural acts. If the work is not yet published (i.e.,
prospective registration), then provide at least the full title and full journal name
of the journal to which the article will be submitted for peer review.
For each new genus-group name, include the original spelling of the genus, the
type species of the genus, and page number on which the description of the new
genus begins (if available).
For each new species-group name, include the original spelling of the species
name, the original genus in which the new species was placed, information on the
type specimen(s) of the new species-group name (collection acronym and catalog
number, if available), type locality (as originally published), and page number on
which the description of the new species begins (if available). If the new species-
group name is established within a pre-existing genus, then full citation details
(including full author names, as above) of the publication in which the genus-
group name was originally described are also required.

ONLINE SUBMISSION PROCESS
Manuscripts must be submitted online via AllenTrack at http://jmamm.allentrack.net
Direct concerns and questions to the Journal Editor. Authors are informed by e-mail of
receipt of their manuscripts and can track them on AllenTrack.
The manuscript submission process is broken into a series of 5 screens that gather
detailed information about your manuscript and allow you to upload the pertinent files.
The sequence of screens is as follows:
1. A long form asking for author information, title, abstract, and number of
files.
2. A screen asking for the actual file locations on your computer (via an open
file dialog). After completing this screen, your files will be uploaded to
our server.
9

3. A screen requesting the order of files in the system-generated merged
PDF.
4. A completion screen that will provide you with a specific manuscript
number for your manuscript.
5. An approval screen that will allow you to verify that your manuscript was
uploaded and converted correctly. You are allowed to replace and delete
files, as well as withdraw the manuscript, on this page.

All manuscripts must be in English. If English is not your primary language you
