The ICAEW ACA qualifcation was added to our portfolio in 2012. The University of South Wales, City Campus, Newport is an ACCA Platinum Approved Learning Partner, a CIMA Learning Quality Partner and an ICAEW Partner in Learning. We are also one of only a few study centres nationwide who are able to ofer an internally assessed course for all of the ACCA Fundamentals Level papers. At City Campus, Newport, a stunning modern building on the banks of the River Usk, you can study undergraduate Accountancy degrees, MSc Accounting and ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW professional programmes. We also ofer a suite of Finance short courses (Governance Best Practice, Cash Management and Accounting for Non-Financial Managers) plus CPD/ technical update training. In the PQ Magazine Awards of 2012, we won the Public Sector Accountancy College of the Year award and one of our tutors was shortlisted for the Lecturer of the Year award (we were shortlisted in both categories at the 2013 Awards). In 2011, one of our ACCA Year 4 students won the prestigious PQ Student of the Year award, Newport was runner up in the Public Sector Accountancy College of the Year award and one of our tutors was again shortlisted for the Lecturer of the Year award. In 2010, Newport was the winner of the Public Sector Accountancy College of the Year award and a CIMA student was short-listed for the PQ Student of the Year award. BSc Accountancy plus ACCA and CIMA achieved excellent scores in the National Student Survey 2012. Overall Satisfaction stood at 94% and scores were above sector averages (often considerably so) in the majority of categories. Indeed, our Accountancy provision was frst in Wales for Teaching and Assessment & Feedback and joint frst for Organisation & Management. Our Accounting teaching team includes 11 qualifed accountants who have signifcant industry and accounting practice experience, as well as signifcant experience of teaching professional accountancy qualifcations. A number of the team: are markers for professional body exams; contribute to study note articles published in the professional journals; contribute to on-line professional student forums; engage in quality control work for the professional bodies such as exam paper assessorship or validation of professional courses; and/or are external examiners for other universities. We also have signifcant links with the local and national professional accountancy bodies, and we regularly attend their events (and host their events at our Newport campuses). The teaching team also contribute to the activities of our Business Accountability and Responsibility Centre (BARC), including the teaching of short courses, presenting at practitioner and research events and conducting research into areas such as sustainability accounting, charity governance disclosures and professional education. Question practice tutorials reinforce technical knowledge and exam technique each and every week on all of our professional programmes. The learning environment here is friendly and supportive, and we are able to ofer an exceptional level of pastoral support. In short, the combination of the practical experience and technical expertise of our lecturing team and our excellence in teaching and learning make our Accountancy courses very special. The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW) ACA qualifcation is classed as a premium, gold standard accountancy qualifcation both in the UK and globally. In 2010, 84% of FTSE 100 companies had an ICAEW Chartered Accountant on the board. The ICAEW professional body currently has 17,600 students and 136,000 members worldwide. Students enter full-time training contracts with accountancy practices or other private/public companies/organisations; they achieve the qualifcation by passing a series of external examinations (which they study part-time) while gaining practical work experience. On qualifcation, they become Chartered Accountants and are able to use the letters ACA after their names. The qualifcation is hence often referred to as the ACA qualifcation. The ACA qualifcation currently comprises of a Certifcate Level, a Professional Level and an Advanced Level (which comprises of Technical Integration papers and a Case Study). The Certifcate Level modules also double up as the stand-alone Certifcate in Finance, Accounting & Business or CFAB qualifcation, which is an excellent qualifcation in its own right for non-fnancial managers. The ACA qualifcation is unique in integrating technical areas at the Advanced Level. Students are required to study fve technical areas at this level (ethics & law, tax, audit & assurance, corporate reporting and business analysis), which are then examined together in the Business Reporting and Business Change papers. These papers aim to simulate real-life business/accounting practice environments, and the concept is taken further with a fnal Case Study examination. Note that minor changes to the Advanced Level will be introduced in 2014/15 due to the evolution of the ACA Qualifcation. In order to qualify as a Chartered Accountant students are required to complete four essential elements as follows: 15 examinations 450 days of technical work experience Initial professional development Structured training in ethics The ffteen examinations are as follows: Certifcate Level (Certifcate in Finance, Accounting & Business) Accounting Assurance Law Principles of Taxation Business & Finance Management Information Professional Level Audit and Assurance Tax Compliance Financial Accounting and Reporting Financial Management Business Planning: Taxation Business Strategy # Advanced Level (NB - will alter from 2014/15) Business Reporting Business Change Case Study 4 # This paper will not be taught during 2013/14 as we are in a transition period from the current ACA scheme to the evolved ACA scheme. Tuition available during 2013/14 at Newport Entry requirements and exemptions Selection and admission criteria are wholly based on ICAEW- stipulated rules. For more information, see: http://careers.icaew.com. Students may enter the ACA qualifcation with a variety of entry qualifcations. However, it is the attainment of a training contract with an employer that usually drives the entry criteria. We recommend that students are in the fnal year of a training contract when they sit the fnal Case Study examination. Open entry (i.e. entering with no previous qualifcations) is possible. The ICAEW efectively use the Certifcate Level modules as a test hurdle for the remainder of the qualifcation. School leavers. Students are advised by the ICAEW that to gain a training contract with employers, they will need at least three A* - C grades at GCSE (some employers may look for fve A* - C grades and most employers will look for an A or B in maths and English), and at least two A-level passes or equivalent. Most employers will look for between 240 and 320 UCAS points and most will not recognise the points gained from an A-level in general studies. Completion of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualifcation gives exemption from up to 5 of the ACA exams (the exact number of exemptions will depend on the AAT options chosen at Levels 3 and 4). The most common entry qualifcation to ACA remains a good honours degree, with achievement of a 1st or 2:1 degree classifcation. Course fees and fees payable to ICAEW Training employers are charged an annual fee in arrears for each of their registered students. The current fee is 165 per student per year excluding VAT. The full amount is payable irrespective of when a student leaves employment or becomes a member during the year. Independent students are charged an initial fee of 165 (+VAT where applicable) to become a registered student. They are then charged an annual fee of 165 (+VAT where applicable) on the 1 January following the date of registration. It is common, but not compulsory, for a training employer to pay exam entry fees on behalf on their students. These fees are valid to 31 December 2013. Examination fees for the Certifcate Level - 65 per paper Examination fees for the Professional Level - 85 per paper Examination fees for the Advanced Level - 165 for each Technical Integration module and 255 for the Case Study The costs of applying for accreditation for prior learning, where applicable, are 65 for each Certifcate Level module and 85 for each Professional Level module Enrolment and induction sessions Induction will be undertaken from 9.30am on the 2nd September 2013 at the City Campus. The CIMA Certifcate in Business Accounting provides an entry route into the CIMA Professional Qualifcation. The CIMA Professional Qualifcation is a world class fnancial qualifcation and is recognised by employers world-wide. It can be your passport to career success in any feld that you choose, whether that be commerce, fnancial services, consultancy, government, the public sector or manufacturing. Upon successfully completing all examinations, and gaining a minimum of three years relevant practical experience, you will become a Chartered Management Accountant and gain your ACMA letters. The CIMA Professional Qualifcation will provide you with an accountancy qualifcation that specialises in management accounting. Management accounting is not a way of recording the past like fnancial accounting, but more a way of assessing what a business is capable of in the future. You will be acquiring skills (such as strategic thinking, and risk and performance management skills) that will help you to progress successfully to a position where you are able to help shape and control the future of organisations. It is these skills that allow Chartered Management Accountants to step into roles as Management Consultants or Business Analysts, as well as more traditional management accountancy roles. Further career progression may see you moving on to Financial Director or Chief Executive roles.
