This manual describes requirements and guidelines for the preparation of the BSCS and BSIT Research and Theses. You are expected to be familiar with its contents. It will answer many of your questions and will help you avoid misunderstandings or complications as you engage in research and prepare the final manuscript. Of course, if you are uncertain about any aspect of the process, you should seek guidance as early as possible from your adviser or the CCS Thesis Coordinator.
I. Research/Thesis/Capstone Subjects
Development of Research 1, Research 2, Thesis 1, Thesis 2 , Capstone1 and Capstone2 shall be undertaken by the BSCS and BSIT students under the following major subjects:
BSCS NEW CURRILCULUM Research 1- CDESANA Design and Analysis of Algorithm Research 2 - SAD Systems Analysis and Design Thesis 1 - CISAPT1 Integrated Software Application/Productivity Tools Thesis 2 - CSPETOP Special Topic BSCS OLD CURRICULUM Research1 - CMANIFO Management of Information System Research2 - CDESPL1 Design and Implementation of Programming Language Thesis 1 - CTHESIS Systems Analysis and Design Thesis 2 - CSPTOP Special Topic BSIT NEW CURRICULUM Research 1 - SAD1 Systems Analysis and Design1 Research 2 - SAD2 Systems Analysis and Design2 Capstone 1 - CSPROJ1 Software Project or IT Research 1 Capstone 2 - CSFTPRO Software Project or IT Research2 BSIT OLD CURRICULUM (Applicable only to INF101 & INF102 & INF103) Research 1 - SAD1 Systems Analysis and Design 1 Research2 - SAD2 Systems Analysis and Design 2 * Capstone 1 - CSPROJ1-Software Project or IT Research 1 * Capstone 2 - CSFTPRO Software Project or IT Research 2
*Both subjects will be taken on the 2 nd semester on their 3 rd yr level, in effect, the students will be concurrently doing their Research2 and Capstone 1 at the same time. If the proposal of the proponents in Research 1 is approved as good for Capstone, then there will only be one study both for Research2 and Capstone 1. Otherwise, the students should be doing two different studies for their Research 2 and Capstone 1.
II. Research/Thesis Domain for BSCS and BSIT A. BSCS The research/thesis of all the Students of Bachelor of Science in Computer Science should lean towards new/novel application of existing algorithms, enhancement of existing algorithm, Decision Support Systems, Artificial Intelligence.
B. BSIT The capstone of all the Students of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology should lean towards development of Specific Applications and Solution Support * Systems and incorporate new/current technology. Capstone projects should cater to the needs of an existing business entity (company). Proof of legal personality of the business must be presented (i.e: business permit, mayors permit, etc..).
In developing your topic, you should ask yourself the following questions:
1. What is my general area of research? 2. What have scholars and practitioners written about this topic? 3. What is my specific research question and objectives? 4. What methodology will I need to support my claim or answer my question? 5. Where will I find the evidence? 6. Do I have confidence in the validity of my sources? 7. Can I complete the research and writing by the established deadlines?
NOTE: domain for BSIT and BSCS applies as early as Research stage.
III. Group Composition The number of proponents per study shall be limited to three (3). However, if the number of students in a class warrants that there are 1 or 2 students left who cannot complete the required number of three (3) per group, then they shall be allowed to join the other groups. In effect, there shall be only one or two groups with four (4) proponents in a particular research/thesis/capstone class. In cases like when the proposal in Research1 was approved as good for thesis/capstone and a member of a group leaves for one reason or another, the remaining members of the group may decide among themselves to continue or not with their study.
IV. Research/Thesis/Capstone Output For each research and thesis/capstone, the following are the output requirements:
Research 1 - Chapters 1-3 with story board Research 2 - Chapters 1-4 with prototype1 and Users manual Thesis 1/ Capstone1 Revised Chapters 1-4 with prototype2 and users and technical manual Thesis 2/ Capstone2 Chapters 1-7 with full system and Technical (SE) Documentation

VI. Evaluation of Research Topic Form
The proponents must submit an evaluation of research topic form during the research topic defense which must be signed by the subject adviser for recommending approval. The form, which is available in the ITC Research Coordinators Office, requires the research project/ study title, topic areas, background, statement of the problem, significance, scope and delimitation and a project time table.
VII. Seeking an Adviser
Securing a research/ thesis/capstone adviser is the students personal responsibility. The thesis should be grounded in one or more of the academic disciplines represented by faculty members in the College of Computer Studies. The proponents must have an adviser in sufficient time to approve your topic proposal before its presentation. A list of potential advisers in the College of Computer Studies is available from the Thesis Coordinator.
After the title proposal has been approved by the subject adviser, it shall be forwarded to the Thesis Coordinator who shall periodically make a list of approved proposals. The potential advisers shall choose from these approved proposals signifying that he/she is inclined or willing to be an adviser. The proponents can then choose their adviser from among those potential advisers who signified their inclination and willingness to advise the particular proposal.
VIII. Grading System
The panelists shall use an evaluation sheet and shall evaluate the proposal based on the following criteria:
I. Concept of the system/study/research II. Documentation III. Technical skills IV. Presentation
IX. Binding and Submission
Students must submit two hardbound copies (with the students name, thesis title and class on the outside cover). One copy shall be kept by the college while the other one shall be forwarded to the library. For BSCS, the color of the cover is navy blue while for BSIT, it shall be gray. Submission of the hard-bound copies shall be 3 days after its approval by the panel or as may be decided by the subject adviser.
