Demandforcertifiedorganicfoodsandproductshasbeengrowingsteadilyoverthepastdecade
inEuropeanandNorthAmericanmarketstoacurrentretailsaleslevelwellover46billionUSD
peryear.
Importedorganicproductsrepresentanincreasingpercentageofthesupplyandrepresenta
valueaddedopportunityforproducersandbusinessesinAfricatoexporttothesemarkets.
Accesstotheorganicmarketrequiresundergoingarigorouscertificationproceduretocomply
withthevariousorganicstandardsinplace.EffortsareunderwayinAfricatodevelop
opportunitiesfortradeoforganicproductsandtheircertification,supportedbytheAfrican
GrowthandOpportunityAct(AGOA).
ThisWestAfricanorganictrainingworkshopwillfamiliarizeinterestedpartiesinthebasicsof
organicagricultureandcertification,andprovidemoreindepthtrainingonthecertification
process,includinghowtodevelopacertificationbodyandperformgrowergroupcertification,as
wellasontheexportmarketopportunities,particularlyintheU.S.
