Reference Books
1. Vijay Kumar. October 9, 2012 (1 edition). 101 Design Methods: A Structured
Approach for Driving Innovation in Your Organization. Publisher: Wiley.
http://www.101designmethods.com/

Description:
The first step-by-step guidebook for successful innovation planning
Unlike other books on the subject, 101 Design Methods approaches the practice of creating
new products, services, and customer experiences as a science, rather than an art, providing a
practical set of collaborative tools and methods for planning and defining successful new
offerings.

Strategists, managers, designers, and researchers who undertake the challenge of innovation,
despite a lack of established procedures and a high risk of failure, will find this an invaluable
resource. Novices can learn from it; managers can plan with it; and practitioners of innovation
can improve the quality of their work by referring to it.

to create a mens wear collection inspired by aesthetic essence Tong Dynasty in Chinas
history

Example 3
4.1 After my visit to XXX museum in Japan, I would like to find out cultural insights
from Japanese design culture and turn those insights into my own design philosophy in
product design

Notes:
Before you define your topic in each Project / Task / Visit, you are recommended to study at all the
changes happening in business, technology, society, culture, policy, etc., that can affect your topic area.

In 101 Design Methods, Vijay (2012) introduces 7 modes of the Design Innovation Process, Mode1:
Sense Intent provides a set of research methods and tools to help you to rethink your problem / topic.
The whole Design Innovation Process is nonlinear and interactive, requiring many cycles through the
process, and often through one or more modes (cycles within cycles), rather than being a direct
sequential push. Please refer to 101 Design Methods for more details.
Briefly describe each Project / Task / Visit you
involved
For each Project / Task (e.g. client project
brief or school project brief), you should
clearly state the topic you are going to
analyse
For each Visit, you should define the topic
based the content of the Visit.
Topic you are going
to analyse
You have to define at least 2 topics to analyse in your completion report
2014/2/26 Completion Report Guideline 6
5. Analysis
You should elaborate the framework and methods that applied to analyse the topic(s)
stated in Part 4.
Notes:
In 101 Design Methods, Vijay (2012) introduces Mode 2: Know Context and Mode 3: Know People
with a set of tools and methods for research and analysis:

You have to apply at least 6 method(s) (3 for Context; 3 for People) to analyse stated topic. You are
highly recommended to apply above method(s) introduced by Vijay (2012).

5.0 Introduction
You should generally describe the whole process of analysis.
5.1.X provide framework and methods to analyse the stated topic(s)
5.2.X elaborate the process of analysis

Example 1
5.0
To analyse the context about sports brand X, I applied following methods and tools:
Eras Map
SWOT
Interest Groups Discussion..

To analyse the people (i.e. potential customer) of sports brand X, I applied following
methods and tools:
Research Participant Mapping
Five Human Factors
POEMS

Example 1 (contd)
5.1.1 Eras Map of sports brand X
- Framework:
I aims to derive historical perspective to sports brand X. Understanding how the brand
change over time offers a fuller picture of the context and helps me rethink about
what opportunities of advertising campaign might exist.

The Eras Map highlights the key characteristics of brand X in each relevant period,
shows how each era is different, and indicates how much they have changed over
time. Constructing such overview map helps me see the overall patterns of change in
the history of brand X.

STEP 1: Define the attributes and time periods to track
I captured behavioral changes of customer of brand X over time. I determine the time
period as 30 years for recognizing clearly distinguishable eras.

STEP 2: Research the historical context
I found historical information in following way:
Internet (please list out)
Books (please list out)
Industry experts (please list out)

STEP 5: Look for insights from findings
Eras Map derived:

I studied the Eras Map and try to extract insights by

The Eras Map analysis helped me pinpoint the behavior (e.g. online shopping) of
existing customer of brand X as an area to explore new advertising strategy......

5.1.2 SWOT of sports brand X
- Framework:
The SWOT analysis aims to evaluate brand X strengths, weakness, opportunities and
treats

Chapter 5.

You should move from researching and collecting data to applying various analytical method /
tools to the data so that you can organize your thinking and gain a clear perspective about your
stated topic(s).

In 101 Design Methods, Vijay (2012) introduces Mode4: Frame Insights with following methods and tools for
distilling research findings into few key insights, and then turn those insights in to concise, actionable principles for
innovative solution:

You have to apply at least 3 method(s) to distill findings to insights in your stated topic(s).

6.0 Introduction
You should generally describe the whole process of framing insights.
6.1.X provide synthesis to identify any commonality, differences, difficulties, problems and
solution etc.
6.2.X any theory, knowledge, know-how derivative from the findings

Example 1
6.0
To distill the findings in chapter 5 into insights, I applied following methods and tools:
