New 2009/10 catalog now available!
Below you will find information on the four main categories of herbs we carry al
ong with listings of which herbs fit which categories, you will notice many herb
s fall into several. Following this are alphabetically listed herb descriptions
further detailing their science, properties and lore.
APHRODISIACS
Through the ages herbal aphrodisiacs have been the most sought after and highly
esteemed of plant medicines. These gifts of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, insp
ire erotic arousal and desire, dissolve inhibitions, and may even reverse impote
nce and frigidity. Aphrodisiacs enhance sexual ability and agility, heightening
the body and minds sensitivity to pleasure and joy. Many tonify the reproductive
organs, greatly improving fertility. Some of Aphrodites herbs can be highly perso
nal; what works wonders for one person or couple may not produce the same effect
s for another. Dedicated to healing through pleasure, we have carefully research
ed and explored many aphrodisiacs over the years, we include the juiciest of wha
t we have found here in the catalog, including those with ancient histories as w
ell as current scientific studies demonstrating their efficacy. The primary aphr
odisiac herbs we supply are: Cacao Seed, Catuaba, Clavohuasca, Chuchuhuasi, Cord
yceps, Damiana, Iporuru, Kola Nut, Maca Root, Moctezumas Secret drink blend, Muir
a-Puama, Red Ginseng, Rhodiola Root, Suma Root, and Yohimbe. Secondary aphrodisi
acs and sexual tonics include: American Ginseng, Ashwaghanda, Astragalus, Betel
Nut, Coconut Oil, Guarana, Guayusa, He-Shou-Wu, Longan Berries, Lycii Berries, P
oria Mushrooms, Reishi Antlers, Schizandra Berries, Shiitake Mushrooms.
IMMUNOSTIMULANTS
The most important group of herbs for all of us, young and old, living at this t
ime in history when pollution, cancer and other diseases have reached epidemic p
roportions. These are herbs that strengthen and nourish the bodys natural immunit
y to disease and toxins. Many of these herbs are adaptogens; they increase the b
odys resistance to a wide variety of stresses and have a balancing and restorativ
e effect on the body as a whole. See the Book Adaptogens. The majority of immuno
stimulants contain phytonutrients that are powerful antioxidants or directly sti
mulate the bodies endogenous production of antioxidants. Antioxidants enhance he
alth and longevity by neutralizing free radicals - unstable oxygen molecules tha
t damage cells, causing many degenerative diseases and the aging process itself.

cing to the central nervous system, over activating the adrenal glands and deple
ting the bodies natural energy reserves. Though some of the stimulants we supply
contain caffeine or related alkaloids, these often occur along with other compo
unds that are more nourishing and balancing to the body. Still, we urge that all
stimulants containing caffeine alkaloids (xanthines) be used with respect and c
are. For further information on the xanthine rich herbs and other stimulants we

- Luther Burbank
We are committed to bringing you the highest potency, finest quality herbs at re
asonable prices. The majority of our botanicals are either ecologically wildcraf
ted, organically grown or cultivated without chemicals. All our herbs are GMO fr
ee, never irradiated, treated with sulfur or other preservatives.
A WHOLESALE pricelist is available upon request.
Though we mention the active chemical constituents throughout our catalog, we re
cognize that it is the totality of the herb and the interaction with an individu
al's biochemistry that is responsible for a therapeutic effect. Admittedly, scie
nce has a way to go before it understands this intricacy. For this reason we off
er predominantly whole herbs, and a few whole herb extracts that we feel are of
exceptional quality and benefit.

years old before they can be tapped for the resin. It has a rich, earthy, vanil
la-like fragrance, and makes a enthralling body scent. Traditionally used for sk
in disease, wound healing, fungal infections, coughs and lung ailments, colds, a
nd rheumatism. It has clearly documented antibacterial, antiseptic and antiparas
itical actions. For internal use, 5 drops twice a day is recommended. We offer p
ure tree resin, not a steamed distilled oil.

BETEL NUTS Areca catechu
This is the worlds most popular (per capita) stimulant derived from the graceful
Betel nut palm tree. Traditionally blended with a variety of spices and additive
s, wrapped in a betel leaf (Piper betle ) and slowly chewed to activate the stim
ulant alkaloid mix. The alkaloid arecoline has been clinically shown to improve
serial learning and memory. Very popular in India, Indonesia, Thailand and other
far eastern cultures. Chewed by millions daily, before breakfast, after lunch,
at bedtime and every hour between. Virtually unknown in the west, but used by mo
re humans than coffee or tobacco! The base of Betel nuts, Betel leaf, Acacia res
in and lime is elaborated in hundreds of ways using cardamom, cloves, tamarind,
dates, fennel, honey, turmeric, other flavors and psychoactive herbs, each regio
n having its own unique blends. Betel is valued throughout Asia as a highly effe
ctive antiparasite herb. Soaked in vodka, the nuts make a potent dark red tinctu
re. In Asia life-long chewing of Betel nuts is linked with mouth cancer, though
its not clear if this is due to the nuts themselves or the popular habit of chewi
ng them with tobacco. Interestingly, the Betel leaf has been shown to suppress t
umor growth. We offer thinly sliced nuts.
Sliced Asian Betel nuts $13/8 oz or $20/lb
BILBERRY Vaccinium myrtillus
Small dark purple berries from a European shrub similar to the blueberry. Utiliz
ed since at least the middle ages as a food and medicine to improve vision. Thes
e mildly sweet, slightly astringent berries are rich in vitamins, minerals and a
ntioxidantsespecially bioflavonoids. The most important of the flavonoids appears
to be the anthocyanosides, which extensive scientific research shows to enhance
circulation by increasing blood flow, strengthening existing capillaries and st
imulating new capillary formation. This action seems to be most concentrated in
and around the eyes, making Bilberry the favored herb for all forms of macular d
egeneration. During World War II British Royal Air Force pilots ate Bilberry jam
to improve visual acuity and clinical studies suggest that regular consumption
improves night vision. Computer users report that it can significantly help to p
revent and relieve eye fatigue. Bilberrys effects on circulation also help to pro
tect against artherosclerosis. Research has shown that Bilberry tonifies the uri
nary system and kidneys, balances blood sugar, is antiviral and antibacterial, a
ntiulcer and antiinflammatory. Mixing with Ginkgo leaf has a synergistic benefic
ial effect on circulation. Bilberry can be made into delicious jams and wines. A
traditional Elizabethan remedy for stomach complaints was made with ground berr
ies and honey. Adds a nice flavor and beautiful purple color when added to teas.
We enjoy rehydrating the berries by soaking them in water overnight, then addin
g them to smoothies or cereal. 1020 grams three times a day is recommended.

CACAO SEED POWDER Theobroma cacao "Cocoa"
Native to Central American rainforests, this tree was originally cultivated by t
he Olmecs, then the Maya, Toltecs and finally taken up by the Aztecs. The seeds
were actually used as a form of currency in Aztec society. The Aztecs were very
thorough in their quest to understand the properties of all plants in their real
m, having an entire class of trained medicinal scientists exploring far and wide
to bring back living specimens to the royal botanical gardens for research. Wit
h such expertise and so many intriguing botanical products available, it is fitt
ing that they determined the seeds of the Cacao tree to be of such superior valu
e. There were periods when no person in the whole domain was allowed to use the
seeds, except the King and his inner circle. In fact, the botanical name for thi
s tree, Theobroma cacao, translates as "food of the gods."
To prepare the seeds, the pods are first piled up to "sweat" or ferment for 3-4
days, then the seeds are removed and dried. For home use locally, they are simpl
y roasted and ground into a paste which is frequently brewed with hot peppers, a
romatic medicinal herbs, cornmeal and mucilaginous flowers of the psychoactive F
lor Rosita tree. When it became necessary to store the powdered product for ship
ping and commerce, a process for defatting the rich cocoa butter was devised to
prevent the oils from going rancid with time. It is these defatted roasted seeds
which are ground to make this exquisite plant ally we know as "cocoa." Few non-
native people are acquainted with the pure form of "cocoa" and its effects becau
se of the abundance of manufactured chocolate/sugar products today.
To learn the spirit of this sacred food-drug one should experience it free from
the dramatically altering effects of sugar and other additives. Brew a strong in
fusion of this seed powder by taking two tablespoons and working it into one cup
of cold water. Start this heating slowly and gently, gradually bringing it to t
he verge of boiling. Take the heat back down immediately to a simmer without act
ually boiling. Let simmer for three minutes. Drink hot, but keep it well stirred
so as not to have the suspended material settle.
Cacao's euphoric aphrodisiacal qualities are attributed to theobromine with a sm
all ratio of caffeine, phenethylamine, isoquinoline, and anandamide which has be
en found to bind to the same receptors in the brain as THC. Cacao also contains
significant amounts of two compounds that inhibit the degradation of anandamide
in the body. The effects come on rapidly. Contrary to assumptions, the action of
theobromine is truly relaxant, particularly for smooth muscle groups. The exper
ience has elements of cerebral excitement but the sensation is overwhelmingly so
matic. The heartbeat becomes pronounced, breathing is deepened and nourishing bl
ood circulation is increased throughout the body. Tactile sensation is raised to
a level of bodily ecstasy. A calm, warm glow of being incarnate, a gentle power
courses through the limbs, that perfect feeling of fulfillment and pleasure, li
ke curling up on a soft rug with a friend in front of a winter fireplace.
Pure Cacao seed powder has recently been found to contain high levels of antioxi
dant polyphenols, oligomeric procynanidins and other flavonoids that help boost
the immune system and offer significant protection against "bad" cholesterol and
heart disease. It is also very nutritious, having a high protein, vitamin and m
ineral content.
Our organically grown, fair trade certified Cacao comes from a small independent
ly owned farms. Expertly roasted, it is the finest quality in terms of taste, nu
trition and medicinal components that we have come across. It is what we use in
formulating our popular aphrodisiacal drink blend, Moctezuma's Secret, as well a
s for personal use in making chocolate confections at home. It is shade grown, d
epending on an intact surrounding forest that also acts as a refuge for the regi
ons biodiversity. Your purchase directly helps support a traditionally sustainabl
e agriculture that aids in the protection and regrowth of our rapidly disappeari
ng rainforests.

CACAO SEEDS, RAW Theobroma cacao "Chocolate Beans"
Many of us have an intimate relationship with chocolate, but few are familiar wi
th the raw, unprocessed seed, the original "Food of the Gods." Once utilized as
a form of currency in Aztec society, raw Cacao seeds are a true superfood, being
high in protein, beneficial fats, vitamins and minerals. Raw Cacao is reported
to be the richest natural source for magnesium, an important mineral highly defi
cient in modern diets. The raw seeds are also surprisingly high in vitamin C and
an excellent source of natural sulfur, a mineral associated with healthy skin,
nails, hair and proper liver and pancreas function. Raw Cacao is the most medici
nal of any chocolate product, containing the highest levels of immune-enhancing
antioxidant polyphenols, procyanidins and other flavonoids known to protect agai
nst a wide array of ailments, especially heart disease. Unfortunately cooking an
d processing seriously compromises or destroys many of these health enhancing co
nstituents in the seeds. The psychoactive properties of the raw seeds are also v
ery different, having a more mild "clear" stimulant effect, being pleasantly rel
axing, imparting a sense of well being, along with a wonderful enhancement of ta
ctile sensation that leaves no doubt to their aphrodisiacal efficaciousness. The
se actions are thought to be at least partially attributable to a much lower caf
feine content and higher theobromine content than the fermented, roasted, proces
sed and sugared "cocoa" that we are all use to. The taste of raw Cacao seeds is
similar to that of unsweetened baking chocolate, slightly bitter and deliciously
rich. They can be eaten whole as is. Soaking in water for several hours softens
them nicely, at which point they can be made into raw "hot" chocolate by adding
a handful to a blender along with your favorite milk (we prefer hemp seed or ma
cadamia nut milk), a little vanilla, cinnamon and honey to sweeten and then warm
ing on the stove. This can alternately be frozen for a special treat. The dry se
eds can be ground in a coffee mill to make raw "cocoa powder." This can be mixed
with 1/5 -1/3 raw Virgin Oil de Coco-Creme oil and honey to taste, then shaped
into squares, placed on waxpaper in the fridge for 10 minutes to solidify, and y
ou have truly phenomenal raw chocolate bars! For those who prefer a more familia
r taste, the seeds can be roasted in a pan, then eaten straight or ground and mi
xed with honey. These seeds are Trinitario variety organically grown and dried a
t very low temperatures in Ecuador. For your convenience we now offer dehusked C
acao nibs (pieces). These nibs are very close to what we previously offered as S
uper Raw Cacao. We enjoy them as a healthful daily snack. See our Books page for
the book Naked Chocolate, full of lore and exquisite recipes.

CALEA ZACATECHICHI: the Dream Herb
The Chontal people of Oaxaca know the endemic Calea zacatechichi herb to be usef
ul as a divinatory medicine. They claim that an extremely bitter tea made from t
he plant induces a state of sleep during which very brief, intense dream sequenc
es reveal the answers village problems and personal difficulties. Strangely, an
extract of Calea zacatechichi was studied in a fully controlled clinical setting
by authoritative scientists to determine its pharmacological effects. The resul
t of this objective research revealed that the plant indeed produces a state of
drowsiness, followed by peculiarly intense but short episodes of cat naps in whi
ch a set of dream sequences were invariably reported by the subjects, who stated
them to be unusually lucid and profound of meaning. In this careful clinical st
udy, control groups receiving placebos, had no such experiences. We sought this
obscure herb for years, finally encountering it in the mountains of southern Mex
ico, in order to offer to interested researchers. Supplies are scarce, but we cu
rrently have a good stock. The bitter tea is made by steeping about 1 tablespoon
herb for 1015 minutes. It is also utilized in smoking blends. For more info on t

cocaine, but a host of interesting alkaloids, sterols, terpenes, lignans, and fl
avonoids. Catuaba is often taken alone or with Muira Puama, traditionally infuse
d overnight in cold water, steeped as a tea or decocted for greater potency, 1/21
Tablespoon per dose. Its mild bitter flavor also makes an excellent cordial and
holds potential as an herbal beer. It can be taken daily for its tonic action,
the only known side effects being erotic dreams and feelings! We find it produce
s a gentle stimulation with a magnification of consciousness and tactile awarene
ss, especially for men. Weve had very positive reports of blending Catuaba with M

CHAMAIRO Mussatia hyacinthina
The bark of this rare vine is highly valued in tropical regions of Bolivia and P
eru as an admixture to Coca leaf. Chewed on its own, a small pinch of Chamairo h
as a mild astringent taste, yet when mixed with a traditional Coca quid it bloss
oms with an exceptional sweet taste, somewhat like powdered sugar! It is thought
to enhance the actions of Coca and is reportedly sometimes chewed with alkali (
baking soda works), but without the Coca, for its own effects. It is also a trad
itional digestive tonic. Chamairos capacity for potentiating other bioactive herb
s (we've heard positive effects with Catuaba) and its promise as a condiment is
still unexplored. We have secured a small supply of finely shredded vine bark, w
ildcrafted by the Tacana in north west Bolivia and are pleased to offer it here

CHANCA PIEDRA Phyllanthus niruri
This small annual herb, native to the Amazon and other tropical regions, is a hi
ghly beneficial plant thats gaining worldwide attention as an important and safe
medicinal. Long employed by indigenous healers for its cleansing and tonifying a
ction on the liver, kidney and gallbladder, as a painkiller and to treat a wide

, colds and flus. The name Chanca Piedra literally means "stone breaker" referri
ng to its effectiveness in expelling kidney, bladder and gallstones. Nicole Maxw
ell, author of the classic Witch Doctors Apprentice, recognized Chanca Piedra as
one of the most important medicines of the Amazon. Over the years hundreds of cl

CHIA SEED Salvia hispanica
The tiny seed of the Chia plant was once a staple food and medicine throughout C
entral America. Traditionally the seeds were mixed with water to treat constipat
ion, sore throat, irritated skin, digestive disturbance, prostate problems, to c
leanse the eyes and increase the efficacy of other medicines. The seeds are a go
od source of B vitamins, calcium (100 grams of seeds contains roughly 5x that of
milk!), phosphorus, zinc, boron (an essential trace mineral deficient in modern
diets) and copper. Chia has excellent protein, containing around 20% with all e
ssential amino acids. A top source for omega3 essential fatty acids and contains
several antioxidants, making it a more stable source for EFAs than flax or hemp
seed. Easily digestible, Chia is rich in mucilloid soluble fiber. When mixed wit
h water or stomach juices, a gel forms that creates a barrier between the carboh
ydrates and digestive enzymes, therefore digestion is slow and uniform, without
spikes in blood sugar levels, providing abundant energy and allaying hunger. Thu
s Chia is useful for athletics, diabetes and weight loss. Mix one part seed to t
en parts water and stir thoroughly for several minutes. This forms a highly vers
atile gel that can be drunk as is, mixed with fruit juices for "Chia fresca" or
used as a thickening agent in recipes. The seeds can also be added to cereals, b
reads, crackers, smoothies, etc. We have a new book on the history and uses Chia
available in our Books section.

CHLORELLA Chlorella pyrenoidosa
Chlorella is an amazing single cell freshwater green MICROALGAE that is the supe
rfood of choice for over 10 million people worldwide. The first known form of pl
ant life with a true nucleus, it has survived for 2.5 billion years because of i
ts extremely tough outer cell wall and its ability to quadruple in quantity ever
y 20 hours, making it the fastest growing plant on earth! The most extensive sci
entifically researched foodstuff and #1 supplement in Japan. NASA believes it to
be the ideal food for long term space travel and colonization. Chlorella is sai
d to be the most powerful yet gentle detoxifying whole food known.
Chlorella contains an impressive 60+% bioavailable protein; providing 19 amino a
cids including all essential aminos in excellent proportions. It is high in enzy
mes, vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5(niacin), B6, B12, C, E, K, an array of carotenes
, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, phosphorus, iodine and except
ionally high in iron. Richest of all the edible algaes in essential fatty acids.
It has the highest levels of chlorophyll of any natural source, up to 5 to 10 t
imes that of Spirulina! Chlorophyll kills harmful bacteria, is nearly identical
to hemoglobin in blood and is a remarkable agent for blood building, cleansing a
nd tissue repair. Chlorella is by far the richest source for RNA/DNA, which when
taken in foods provides material for cellular repair and revitalization, contri
buting to rapid healing, greater energy and longer life span. The nucleus of the
chlorella cell contains a unique nucleotide-peptide complex known as Chlorella
Growth Factor (CGF) which actually promotes cell growth in the body, stimulating
tissue repair and healing to an extent not previously found in any other food,
it even increases growth rates in children! Chlorella produces an incredible enh
ancement of metabolic function, rebuilds and fortifies the immune system, slows
aging, greatly improves digestion and stimulates the growth of beneficial bacter
ia in the bowels. It is highly effective helping the body to breakdown and detox
ify a wide variety of environmental toxins. In fact, Chlorellas outer cell wall h
as the unique ability to bind with heavy metals and persistent toxicants like DD
T and PCBs and carry them safely out of the body. The cell wall also contains a
substructure of complex polysaccharides that stimulate interferon production to
fight off viruses and other foreign agents. Clinical research has shown chlorell
a to aid in protecting against and healing an amazingly wide spectrum of maladie
s including: colds and flus, liver disease, high cholesterol, tumors/cancers, ul
cers, Alzheimers, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, candida overgrowth, loss of vis
ion, even radiation sickness.
A starting dose is about 1 teaspoon a day, working up to 4 or more over several
weeks. More should be taken when illness is present, as a safeguard when traveli
ng and during the cold and flu season. Chlorella has a much milder taste compare
d to other algaes like Spirulina and is excellent mixed into juice, smoothies, s
auces, soups and other foods. Blending with equal parts honey is a real treat, k
ids love it! Chlorella is known to increase the growth of lactobacillus acidophi
lus and enhances the preparation of fermented foods and drinks such as sauerkrau
t, yogurt and kefir. The most pronounced effects are usually experienced after c
onsuming Chlorella daily for 2-3 months; increased energy accompanied by mental
clarity and a remarkable feeling of well being. Great for everyone, healthy or i
ll, children, elders, even pets!
Chlorellas tough outer wall of cellulose is largely indigestible, but the Japanes
e have come up with several methods to overcome this problem. Our Chlorella is e
xposed to supersonic sound, which vibrates the cells together weakening the cell
walls and causing small ruptures. The chlorella is then spray dried, further pe
rmeating the cell walls without completely fracturing them. This process produce
s a beautiful deep green powder that is one of the most digestible products whil
e preserving the high nutrient content that is partially destroyed by other prod
uction methods. The protein content of our Chlorella is typically 65% while Chlo
rella produced by the patented dyno-mill method is closer to 50%.
Our Chlorella is naturally cultivated in sun exposed ponds in Japan. Sun exposur
e assures the highest levels of chlorophyll, CGF and other phytonutrients. Growt
h, harvest and processing is closely monitored, our Chlorella powder tests negat
ive for all pollutants and microbes.
Chlorella keeps well. For optimum nutrient preservation we suggest storing in an
air tight glass container under refrigeration. One pound fits into a one quart
mason jar.
Permeated (cracked) cell wall Chlorella powder $16/8 oz or $26/lb
CHUCHUHUASI Maytenus macrocarpa
The bark of this medicinal rainforest tree is also known as Chuchuhuasa (not to
be confused with Heisteria pallida, Cheiloclinum cognatum and several others wit
h this common name). One of the foremost herbal medicines in Amazonia, used as a
general cleansing immuno-fortifier for thousands of years. Traditional healers
have shown how they use the bark for colds, flu, infections, migraine, adrenal s

t. Sesquiterpenic and spermidine alkaloids, catechins, cumarins, saponins and tr
iterpenes are present. Chuchuhuasi synergizes well with other herbs; one great a
phrodisiacal blend is Chuchuhuasi, Clavohuasca, Iporuru and Cacao. Traditionally

CLAVOHUASCA Tynanthus panurensis "Clove Vine"
This exotic aphrodisiac is a highly regarded, and until recently, well kept secr
et amongst folks in the Amazon. This rare vine is in the same family as the "mot
her of all medicines", ayahuasca. It bears the enchanting aroma and flavor of cl
oves. Clavohuasca is often mentioned primarily as a womans aphrodisiac, but in fa
ct both men and women greatly enjoy its effects on sexual potency and it is wide
ly used in Peru and Brazil to treat frigidity and to support healthy erections.
The vine has analgesic properties and is traditionally utilized to treat rheumat
ic pains. It is also an excellent digestive aid and it is sometimes an admixture
to ayahuasca brews to help mitigate the purgative effects. We have also heard r
eports of its utilization treating thyroid imbalances. Very little research has
been done on its constituents, an alkaloid has been reported and the substance e
ugenol is responsible for the clove-like aroma, it may contain other intriguing
unexplored compounds. The most common aphrodisiacal preparation in South America
is made by macerating the vine bark in cane alcohol. Many also find it to make
an enticing cordial after soaking in brandy for several weeks. It can be made in
to tea, about 12 teaspoons per cup, or mixed with hot chocolate. Our Clavohuasca
is sustainably wildcrafted in northeastern Peru.

COCONUT OIL, RAW Cocos nucifera "Virgin Oil de Coco-Creme"
Coconut oil or coconut butter (as its known below 78 F in its solid state) has bee
n employed as a medicine and food since antiquity. Widely used in Ayurvedic conc
octions, it is considered the most cooling of all therapeutic oils. Unlike the d
eleterious cholesterol-rich saturated fats found in dairy products and meat, raw
coconut oil is a cholesterol-free beneficent saturated fat comprised of mostly
medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) which are digested and metabolized easily, bein
g converted directly into energy rather than being stored as fat. Raw coconut oi
l has less calories than any other fat. The MCFAs in raw coconut oil are capric
acid, caprylic acid, lauric acid and myristic acid. which display potent antibac
terial, antifungal, antiviral and antiprotozoal properties. Laboratory tests hav
e shown these MCFAs to be useful for flu, herpes, ulcers, hepatitis C, AIDS, pne
umonia, candida, fungal skin infections, and parasites. Raw coconut oil is antio
xidant and helps stimulates proper thyroid function, aiding weight loss and assi
sting to lower cholesterol by converting it to pregnenolone, which is restorativ
e to the body/mind and helps balance hormone levels. Consuming raw coconut oil r
egularly may also balance blood sugar. Taken internally and applied topically it
is highly nourishing, regenerative and moisturizing to the skin. Widely used in
the Tropics to protect skin and hair from the sun. It makes an exceptional mass
age and body oil. With its sensuous silky feel, delicious aroma and taste, we co
nsider it the supreme erotic oil. Because coconut oil is one of the most natural
ly stable oils and unlike other oils does not form carcinogenic trans-fatty acid
s during heating, it is the ideal oil for cooking and imparts a wonderful flavor
. Raw coconut oil can be used in place of butter/oils in any recipe. It can also
be eaten straight and is a great creamy addition to smoothies. 12 tablespoons a
day recommended, more for therapeutic doses. It blends fabulously with Cacao and
is indispensable for making raw chocolate bars. Our pure raw coconut oil is the
very finest, a one of a kind oil, known as Virgin Oil de Coco-Creme. In our exp
erience, it has the highest therapeutic value of any coconut oil, superior to ot
her raw virgin oils on the market. When solid it melts easily to touch and is cr
ystal clear when liquid. Extracted from fresh organic Indonesian coconut milk us
ing cold pressing and centrifugation. Unlike other coconut oils there is no chem
icals, heating, drying, or fermentation at any stage of the processes. A pure bu
t unrefined "pharmaceutical" grade, sweet smelling and tasting, light raw oil wi
th a shelf life of at least 3 years.

GREEN TEA Camelia sinensis = Thea sinensis
The Holy Sacrament of Zen has an ancient and noble history as a drug plant ally
in the Far East. The scientific name, Thea (=goddess) underscores the revered st
atus of the beautiful plant from whose leaves tea is made. From emperor to peasa
nt, mongol to priest, the brew has been the stimulant of choice for countless mi
llions across eons of time. It has captivated the souls of humans and has been w
orshipped, or perhaps more accurately has been a aid for worshipping, with Teais
m being perhaps one of the worlds largest cults. There are many forms of tea and
as many methods in preparing it.
Most tea products and blends are from fermented leaves which are virtually compo
sted in great heaps before being slowly roasted. These are the common black teas
. We find the stimulant alkaloids and fragrant volatile oils are seriously degra
ded by this fermenting process. Green Tea is an unfermented leaf product with qu
ite distinct properties and flavor. It is made from only the finest grade of fre
sh leaves, briefly steamed and/or dried rapidly in copper pans over low heat to
arrest enzymatic activity and thus preserve taste and nutrients. The leaves are
rolled in the palm of the hand as they dry, to break up internal cell walls and
crumble them in a uniform cut. This product contains up to 4.5% caffeine (theine
) and theophylline with small amounts of theobromine and xanthine as well as 15%
gallotannic acid and 0.75% of a yellow volatile oil responsible for the inscrut
ably delightful odor and taste.
To prepare unfermented Green Tea into one of the finest brews, we recommend foll
owing a very specific recipe. Take pure cold water and bring it just under a boi
l. In a second pan place one teaspoon of Green Tea per cup or two being served.
Remove the water from the heat and let it cool just a bit. Pour the desired amou
nt of this water over the leaves, but be ready to act quickly. Let this steep fo
r about a minute or so then strain off into cups or a preheated teapot. This pre
vents cooking the leaves and allows the readily soluble xanthines and oils to in
fuse without destroying their subtle flavors while avoiding the release of the u
ndesirable tannic acid irritants. Moderate consumption is felt as an invigoratin
g mental tonic. It refreshes a tired spirit, speeding up thought processes and o
pening the higher intellectual centers. We experience this as a psychic opening
of the upper forehead. Beware of drinking too many cups: you may find yourself p
acing wildly in circles.
Green Tea is an excellent source of immune building polyphenols and other antiox
idants. Believed to offer protection against heart disease, cancer, tooth decay,
aids digestion and boosts longevity when consumed regularly. Rich in vitamins a
nd minerals. Other than certain mushrooms, Green Tea is the only source of the a
mino acid L-theanine, said to counter many of the negative effects of caffeine b
y stimulating alpha brainwaves which promote a state of relaxed awareness.
We offer five distinct varieties for those just getting to know Green Tea as wel
l as discerning connoisseurs-
Organically grown Bancha Green Tea- Less caffeine than other Green Teas. Japanes
e steamed, untoasted, mature leaf produced late in the harvest season. Nice arom

ed into tight pellets that "blossom" when added to hot water. Grown in Jiangxi P

arly in spring from first picked tender leaves. Finest quality, makes a deep eme
rald infusion with a delicate flavor and high caffeine content. Much preferred b
y connoisseurs over Chinese Sencha. A little goes a long way! $11/4 oz or $33/lb

GUARANA Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis
Famed tonic/stimulant of the Brazilian Amazon. Natives insist their daily dose o
f Guarana serves as far more than a powerful stimulant, claiming it acts as both
an aphrodisiac as well as a treatment for headache, fever and cramps. The high
content of tetra-methyl-xanthine, hypoxanthine, guaranine, theophylline and theo
bromine accounts for its intensely pleasurable stimulant effects, which propel t
he mind and body for up to six hours. Prescribed as a replacement drug for those
who cannot tolerate coffee and tea, but its unusual saponin content (limbonine)
underlies the longterm tonic effect (Ginseng owes its activity to saponins). Kn
own as a healthy stimulant and perfect sustaining food substitute during fasts a
nd diets, its also fun! About 1/2 to 1 tablespoon is a dose. We now offer whole s
eeds so you can grind your own powder fresh in a coffee mill. One of the crops o

GUAYUSA Ilex guayusa
Guayusa is a tree native to the eastern montana of Columbia, Ecuador and Peru an
d closely related to Yerba Mate. Guayusa leaves contain a significant amount of
caffeine and have been used for their healthy stimulating properties for thousan
ds of years. While Yerba Mate has enjoyed ever increasing popularity, Guayusa ha
s remained shrouded in mystery. In Ecuadorian Amazonia, Guayusa tea is drunk as
a general tonic, a treatment for headaches, stomach problems and for ritual puri
fication. It is considered a productive aphrodisiac. Taken with ayahuasca it is
said to "kill the bitter taste", "to prevent hangover" and to "give strength to
deal with ayahuasca." The tea is also drunk shamanically to enhance dreaming, an
d is reported by some to consistently produce lucid dreams. Leaves of a Shuar In
dian strain of Guayusa were found to contain 7.6% caffeine, making it the most p
otent caffeine plant known. However, on average, most leaves, including those we
offer, contain 12% or less. Guayusa brews a very tasty tea, somewhat reminiscent
of Green Tea but with a sweet aftertaste. It has a very low tannin content and
therefore can be steeped for a long time to bring out the full flavor of the lea
ves. Use about 12 teaspoons per cup, less for the powdered leaf. It is commonly b
rewed with ginger. The tea produces a pleasant state of enhanced sensory awarene
ss without any jittery or edgy effects. In fact, in Ecuador it is said to be "go
od to calm nerves" and "good for women who are pregnant." Very little modern res
earch has been done with this amazing plant, in addition to the caffeine, triter
penes and chlorogenic acid derivatives have been found. We feel confident that f
uture studies will reveal more immunomodulating and antioxidant phytochemicals l
ike those found in Yerba Mate and Green Tea, and that Guayusas relative obscurity
will be remedied as this beneficial stimulant becomes more widely available. We
are pleased to offer premium grade leaf from Ecuador, traditionally cultivated
without any chemicals.

HIMEMATSUTAKE MUSHROOM Agaricus brasiliensis
Agaricus brasiliensis comes from an area near Sao Paulo, Brazil. Extensive exper
iments by researchers at the National Cancer Institute and in Tokyo demonstrated
this mushroom to be very promising as an immunostimulant. It contains high leve
ls of a unique beta glucan polysaccharide, evidently the compound responsible fo
r the rapid anticancer and antiviral activity found in their tests. In addition
to this anticancer effect through induction of cytokines, Himematsutake is shown
to reduce blood pressure, modulate blood sugar, lower cholesterol and aid in re
versing the effects of arteriosclerosis. 13 teaspoons (26 grams) of powder a day.

HONEYBUSH TEA Cyclopia intermedia/subternata
A highly esteemed drink of the Khoi and San people. Endemic to the Cape fynbos r
egion of South Africa. Made from the leaves, twigs and blossoms of many species
of small leguminous Cyclopia shrubs and named for their sweetly fragrant yellow
flowers. The tea is produced in much the same way as Rooibos, though the "fermen
tation" process is sometimes longer to achieve its rich brown color and sweet sm
ell. Dr. H. De Lange of the National Institute at Kirstenbosch sees Honeybush as
"an evolutionary drink like wine, because there are so many plant varieties and
possibilities of creating a range of teas, each with its own distinct flavor."
Honeybush contains trace amounts of caffeine (0.01% compared to 3% or more in bl
ack tea), yet is calming in its effects. Low in tannins, high in vitamin C, very
rich in calcium, potassium and other minerals. Contains anti-diabetic pinitol a
nd antioxidant isoflavones, coumestans and xanthones. Research on Honeybush is n
ot as extensive as Rooibos, but it is showing to have a wide variety of benefits
-- antiinflammatory, anticarcinogenic, antimicrobial and antifungal. Becoming a
popular for menopause, helping to alleviate hot flashes. Tones the urinary syst
em, aids digestion and is good for psoriasis and other skin disorders. It is eve
n said to stimulate milk flow in lactating mothers.
Similar in taste to Rooibos, this delectable tea brews an apricot to deep pink c
olor with a mild sweet taste, floral and smooth, with a hint of spicy undertones
. Unlike many teas, prolonged boiling at low temperatures actually enhances the
flavor. 2-3 teaspoons per cup of tea should be infused for a minimum of 10 minut
es. Like Rooibos, the same batch of tea can be steeped several times. Fantastic
hot, cold, sweetened or unsweetened. Terrific when blended 50/50 with Rooibos.
The Honeybush industry is still in its infancy and much of it is harvested from
the wild. Our premium grade, certified organic tea comes from Cyclopia intermedi
a and Cyclopia subternata grown on locally run cooperative farms in South Africa
, so wild populations are not impacted. Out of stock
IPORURU Alchornea castaneifolia
Iporuru, or Hiporuru, is a shrubby Amazonian tree and important medicinal. Used
in Peruvian dietas as a "teacher plant" and occasionally added to ayahuasca brew
s. Well known in Peru for its antiinflammatory and antiarthritic action and bein
g utilized in North America by athletes, yogis and herbalists for its ability to
support muscle and joint structure, aiding flexibility of movement and range of
motion. An effective topical pain reliever when rubbed into injuries. In parts
of Peru it is hailed as a useful aphrodisiac, increasing female fertility and a
remedying male impotency. Other folk uses include treating colds, coughs, diarrh
ea and diabetes. Taken regularly it produces an interesting state of heightened
awareness. Laboratory research has shown Iporuru to have antitumor, antifungal a
nd antiviral actions. Analysis shows saponins, phenols, steroids, flavonols, fla
vones, tannins, xanthones and alkaloids including alchorneine also found in Alan
(Alchornea floribunda) of western Africa, see Recording #124. 12 grams (about 1/
2 teaspoon) is taken 23 times a day. Iporuru can only be harvested in the Amazons
dry season, since it spends most of the rainy season underwater. For most uses 1
-2 grams (about 1/2 teaspoon) is taken 2-3 times a day brewed as a tea, or taken
in capsules..

KOLA NUT POWDER Cola nitida = Cola acuminata
Indigenous to coastal rainforests of West and Central Africa, the seeds of this
beautiful tree have been prized for their powerful stimulant effect. A member of
the same family as Cacao, the Sterculiaceae. The whole seed is carefully peeled
to remove the two large cotyledons within the kernel shell. These are dried to
form the Kola "nuts" which are powdered for use. This powder contains between 1%
and 3.5% caffeine (usually about 2%). Theobromine is also present in amounts ju
st under one percent. The fresh Kola nuts are particularly enjoyed where the tre
es grow, and this preference is known to have solid grounds in scientific fact:
the xanthines (caffeine and theobromine) are bound together with an unusual comp
ound called kolacatechin, which itself breaks down upon drying into the tannin K
ola Red. The kolacatechin allows the bound chemicals to be absorbed in a joined
fashion, with a unique synergistic action not the same as when experienced as in
dividual substances in dried Kola powder. For those of us not so fortunate as to
have access to a nearby Kola tree in season, the dried product must suffice. In
fact, the dried Kola nut has been so craved and appreciated in Africa that exte
nsive intertribal trade networks managed to have passed it from coast to coast,
north to south. In past generations, the Kola nut was treated as a unit of money
.
The reddish-brown powder may be taken in its natural state, either eaten straigh
t, mixed with honey or packed in capsules. A normal dose is 1-2 teaspoons. Kola
is traditionally eaten before a meal to aid digestion and thought to improve the
flavor of anything eaten after it. An interesting drink may be prepared by stir
ring the Kola powder into cold water (a tablespoon per cup) and gradually bringi
ng it to a near boil, reducing the heat to simmer for five minutes before strain
ing. The drink may be sweetened to taste, but it is best without cream or other
flavorings. It has a unique flavor, not unpleasant. The many types of soft drink
s which use some Kola essence have a hint of this taste. In fact the original Co
ca-Cola got its name from Kola nut and coca leaf once being major herbal ingredi
ents.
The effects usually are first noticed as an increase in depth of breathing accom
panied by spine tingling rushes of energy which begin in the lower back and swir
l up to the base of the head, climaxing with a tightening of the scalp and a fee
ling of the hair standing on end. It can range from a quick flash up the spine t
o a full-on, one-by-one opening of the chakras as a kundalini-like mobilization
of vital force rises to the crown of the head. Most people notice this sort of e
xperience, especially those who tend to have body consciousness as an inclinatio
n. Kola usually comes on very smoothly, accelerating somatic and cerebral energy
for about an hour. It is good to use that peak time for enjoying the ride. Sinc
e the skins pleasure receptors are especially effected, the sensation of touch be
comes very pleasurable indeed. Delicate stroking or very light massage can be an
enjoyable thing to share with a partner. This is enhanced by calming the mind a
nd focusing on the surface of the skin while in a relaxed posture. The combinati
on of an alert, receptive state of mental stimulation with the sensitization of
pleasure in touch make Kola a delightful experience.

LIONS MANE MUSHROOM Hericium erinaceus
An unusual looking mushroom, forms white balls covered in small tenticle like gr
owths. Native to stumps and logs of temperate forests throughout the northern he
misphere. Typically used in Chinese medicine for digestive ailments. Native Amer
icans used the dried powdered mushroom for wound healing. A seafood like flavor
and texture make it a choice culinary fungus when fresh. The focus of recent stu
dies, Lions Mane contains a number of polysaccharides with antitumor properties,
other compounds and fatty acids that stimulate the immune system. A group of com
pounds named erinacines have been discovered that may stimulate the regrowth of
neurons, regenerating nerve tissue in the brain. This makes the fungus an auspic

LUCUMA Pouteria obovata (=Lucuma obovata)
The fruit of this sacred tree, a sapote relative, was the most spiritually impor
tant fruit of the ancient cultures of coastal Peru, archaeological evidence dati
ng back 10,000 years. It played a central role in creation myths, the nutritious
breast like fruits being associated with fertility and nourishment. The fruits
superficially resemble a nippled avocado with yellow-orange pulp "the color of t
he light stolen from a thousand sunsets." The pulp has an attractive aroma and a
rich maple-cream flavor. It is high in carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and miner
als, including significant amounts of beta-carotene, niacin and iron. The dried
powdered fruit is a good addition to herbal blends, mellowing the taste of more
pungent and bitter herbs and is a essential addition to smoothies. It synergizes
incredibly with the flavors of Cacao, Maca and Mesquite. Widely used in the fin
e food preparations of Peru, the culinary possibilities are endless. We are plea

LYCII (GOJI) BERRIES Lycium barbarum "Gou Qi Zi"
Lycii are pink-red berries of a spiny solanaceous bush native to isolated areas
of China and Mongolia. Also known as Goji berries or wolfberries. A traditional
Chinese longevity enhancer, stories dating back nearly 2000 years concern its mi
raculous ability to prolong and improve life. One myth says it was a staple food
of the great sage and herbalist, Li Ching Yuen who was claimed to be over 250 ye
ars old when he died in 1930! Lycii berries have been declared a national treasu
re by the State Scientific and Technological Commission in China.
Lycii berries are an incredibly nutritionally rich herb/food containing 18 amino
acids, including all the essentials, and up to 21 important trace minerals such
as germanium, zinc, calcium, iron, copper, selenium, etc. Each raisin sized be
rry is packed full of beta-carotene and vitamin C. Rich in vitamins B1, B2, B6 a
nd E. These wonder berries also contain linoleic acid, sesquiterpenoids, tetrate
rpenoids, beta-sisterol, betaine and immune strengthening polysaccharides. One p
olysaccharide in the berries has been claimed to induce secretion of rejuvenativ
e growth hormone by the pituitary gland, giving possible additional credit to Ly
cii as a revered antiaging herb.
Lycii are considered an aphrodisiac and fertility booster; clinical studies have
shown them to significantly raise testosterone levels in elderly men. A possibl
e mild antidepressant - prolonged daily use is claimed to promote cheerfulness,
vitality and clarity. Utilized in oriental medicine to tonify and protect the ki
dneys and liver, nourish the blood and improve vision. Modern research shows the
se delicious berries to enhance the immune system and balance blood sugar. Lycii
berries are a favorite of the medal winning Chinese Olympic swim team. They hav
e been demonstrated to increase levels of the potent antioxidant superoxide dism
utase in the body. They are now being thoroughly scrutinized for their anticance
r activity.
Lycii berries are one of the simplest herbs to use, they are very sweet and tast
y, and can be used in food preparation and cooking just like raisins. Try rehydr
ating them by soaking in water. Popular blended in smoothies or mixed into oatme
al and cereal. Traditionally, the berries are boiled in light wine, then this is
used as broth stock in soup. A famed longevity tea is made from equal parts Lyc
ii and Schizandra berries. An excellent liver cleanse and tonic can be made in t
he blender with 1/4 cup soaked berries, 1 tablespoon ground Milk Thistle seed, 1
teaspoon Chlorella powder and 2 cups apple juice. We love to chew these delight
ful berries as snacks daily. One half to one ounce (1/8 - 1/4 cup) a day is the
recommended intake. Eating more during the cold and flu season is advised.
This once obscure Asian medicinal superfood has been reborn recently as "Goji" w
ith all the attendant hype that Americans lavish on their pop idols. Even Dole c
orporate fruit company has pounced upon the bandwagon, peddling their own brand
of Goji berry. Despite all the hype, Lycii remain a superior nutritive medicinal
.
Unfortunately, most dried Lycii berries are treated with sulfur dioxide as a pre
servative. As with all of our herbs, we have taken time to search out high grade
berries that are organically grown in the ancient Lycii farming region of Ning
Xia, China. Contrary to popular Goji marketing trends, Lycii are not grown or wi
ldcrafted in Tibet, or in the Himalaya proper, just as Himalayan salt comes actu

mino acids, sterols, flavanols, and alkamides. Like most adaptogens, the effects
are most noted with regular consistent use, 1 - 4 tablespoons a day. With a ple
asant malty taste, it mixes well with any food or drink. Numerous traditional An

MESQUITE MEAL, PERUVIAN Prosopis pallida "Algorroba"
Since ancient times desert dwellers of the Americas have used the seed pods of t
he Mesquite tree as a dietary product, in fact it was probably the single most i
mportant food source for ancient civilizations along South America's arid coasta

MILK THISTLE SEED Silybum marianum
Seeds of this biennial weed have been used since at least the 1st century for de
toxing and protecting the liver. The efficacy of this hepatoprotective action ha
s been confirmed by exhaustive laboratory and clinical research. The responsible
compounds are a complex of flavolignans known collectively as silymarin (=silyb
in). Silymarin alters the outer liver membrane cell in such a way that certain t
oxins cannot penetrate the cell. Regenerates the livers cells by stimulating RNA
polymerase A, thus enhancing ribosome protein synthesis. Silymarin has even been
effective against usually fatal amatoxin/phallotoxin poisoning from mushrooms.
Invaluable for treating all forms of hepatitis and alcohol induced hepatoxicity.
Recent studies have shown Milk Thistle to be promising inhibiting many forms of
cancer, and to enhance the production of the potent metabolic antioxidants supe
roxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase. Even if you dont have liver da
mage or disease, Milk Thistle may offer protection from widespread environmental
toxins, pharmaceutical drugs, even overly rich foods. Eating the whole seed ass
ures you get all the beneficial constituents, some of which may be absent from e
xtracts. 1215 grams (23 tablespoons) of seed a day should equal 200400 mg of silyma
rin. The seeds are easy to use, powder in a coffee grinder and add to cereals, s
moothies, salads or soups. They can be sprouted and eaten like sunflower sprouts
. We offer the finest grade of seed available.

MOCTEZUMA'S SECRET
When the Spanish barbarian, Cortez burst into the 1520sAztec court, he was shock
ed and intrigued to discover the aged Moctezuma reveling in the pastime of a roy

MULUNGU Erythrina mulungu
The bark of this graceful Amazonian coral tree is a useful hypnotic sedative tra
ditionally used to treat anxiety, calm the nerves, treat insomnia, epilepsy, rhe
umatism, asthma, and to strengthen the liver. Use of Mulungu for anxiety and str

effect similar to diazepam. It has also been shown to have antibacterial, antiin
flammatory, and liver protective actions. Modern herbal medicine has just begun
utilizing Mulungu to treat depression, liver disorders, promote healthy sleep pa
tterns, strengthen the heart, and help with drug withdrawal. The chemistry of Mu
lungu has been studied extensively; the bark contains novel alkaloids, flavonoid
s, and triterpenes. This is yet another impressive botanical from Amazonia. Thos
e who do not respond well to Kava or other herbal sedatives may find this the pe

NEEM LEAF Azadirachta indica
For centuries the Neem tree has been one of the most versatile sources of medici
ne in India. The leaves have been used to treat all manner of maladies including
arthritis, fungal infections, parasites, malaria, indigestion, heart disease, d
iabetes, external wounds, sunburn and skin disease. Scientific studies are affir
ming many of these uses, showing that Neem leaves are antibacterial, antifungal,
antiviral and may prove beneficial for AIDS, cancer, and reducing anxiety. Trad
itionally mixed with grains, stored foods and fibers to repel insects. Recent st
udies have shown that they inhibit the common food mold, Aspergillus, from produ
cing dangerous carcinogenic aflotoxins. Strong leaf tea is also an effective, sa
fe insecticide and fungicide when sprayed on garden pests. Though the leaves hav
e been consumed as a tea for ages, some evidence suggests long term internal use
may cause liver damage. Paradoxically a leaf extract is considered hepatoprotec
tive. Until this is clarified we offer leaves for external use only.

REISHI MUSHROOMS Ganoderma lucidum "Ling Zhi"
Since ancient times Oriental medicine has classified healing plants, but there h
ave only been a handful considered as the Superior Medicines. Reishi mushroom (o
r Ling Zhi= "spirit plant") is top among these rare and prized medicinals which
are said to give long life, assist all healing processes, are suited for all peo

RHODIOLA ROOT Rhodiola rosea
The magical root of this semi-succulent Russian plant, also known as "Rose Root"
or "Golden Root", is emerging as one the most promising "new" adaptogens and he
rbal "smart drugs". Recorded knowledge of this herb dates back over 2,000 years,
but its just now getting notice here in the west due to extensive pharmacologica
l and clinical studies. An official medicine of the former Soviet Union Pharmaco
poeia, the phytochemically rich root contains a host of beneficial compounds inc
luding flavonoids, terpenes, phenylpropanoids (rosavin), phenylethanols and phen
olic acids responsible for the antioxidant, adaptogenic and cerebroactive effect
s. Clinical research has shown Rhodiola to enhance cognition; improving memory a
nd learning, greatly reduce stress and fatigue, stimulate the immune system, inc
rease metabolism, aid thyroid function, protect the cardiovascular system, boost
fertility and sexual function, and alleviate depression. It has also proven ben
eficial for cancer and ameliorates some of the side effects of chemotherapy. Fol
k medicine uses this incredible root for practically every known ailment; to inc
rease energy, endurance, longevity, stimulate sexual arousal, enhance mood and p
sychic abilities. In Siberian mountain villages, the roots are still given to co
uples prior to marriage to assure fertility and many healthy children. It is sai
d that Viking warriors once chewed the root to build their physical strength.
Taken late in the day, the root's powerful psychostimulant effects are known to
cause insomnia, but once asleep induce vivid dreams. Unlike most adaptogens that
need to be taken for several weeks to be effective, Rhodiola begins to act with
the first dose. A healthy and stimulating caffeine free alternative to coffee a
nd tea. Excellent for periods of intense study. Rhodiolas ability to keep one awa
ke and aroused is leading to its rising popularity in the Rave dance scene as a
intelligent alternative to illegal and unhealthy stimulants.
Brews a red pink tea that smells and tastes reminiscent of rose petals. 1-3 teas
poons per cup, more for a real cerebral workout. Steep for 10-15 minutes, if ste
eped longer the tea becomes strongly astringent. We have found mixing it with Ro
oibos or Honeybush tea is quite delicious and helps to balance the astringency.
We offer roots that have been grown without chemicals, and will automatically su
bstitute organically grown roots when available at no extra charge.

ROOIBOS TEA Aspalathus linearis
Rooibos, or redbush, is a traditional beverage of the Khoi people of the Cederbe
rg region of South Africa. Made from leaves and twigs of a leguminous shrub -- c
hopped, moistened, bruised and heaped to "ferment" for several hours. The "ferme
ntation" is actually a process during which phenolic compounds in the plant are
oxidized, giving the tea its characteristic reddish brown color and sweet aroma.
Once this process is complete the tea is carefully spread out and dried in the
sun.
A favorite among tea connoisseurs the world over, Rooibos is Japans #1 imported t
ea, and also our personal favorite. It brews a beautiful dark red tea that is sl
ightly sweet with a rich, satisfying body and all the depth black tea drinkers e
xpect. Highly nutritious, low in tannins and free of caffeine and oxalic acid. A
delicious and healthy choice for those wanting an alternative to common tea or
coffee.
Interestingly, its effects are pleasantly stimulating when consumed during the d
ay and relaxing at night, promoting sound sleep. It has true adaptogenic propert
ies and is rich in potassium, copper, zinc, iron, magnesium, sodium, fluoride an
d manganese. High in immune building antioxidants, as potent as Green Tea. Conta
ins quercetin and the unique flavonoid C-glycosides aspalathin and nothofagin, a
superoxide dismutase mimic, and oligosaccharides known to have strong anti-HIV
activity. Documented research has shown Rooibos to have antiinflammatory, antica
rcinogenic/mutagenic, and even antiaging properties. Its a traditional remedy for
infant colic and offers relief for mild depression, nervous tension, stomach cr
amps, and constipation, while enhancing metabolic function. Drinking the tea eve
ryday is an excellent prophylactic for colds and flus; allergies and asthma are
even found to be significantly reduced. Applied topically as a wash or added to
the bath it helps clear acne and a wide variety of skin ailments. Japanese studi
es have demonstrated its effectiveness suppressing herpes simplex. Highly versat
ile, we also find it be a great natural dye and wonderful coloring and flavoring
agent for cooking and baking.

SACHA JERGON Dracontium peruvianum
This tuber has long been used by indigenous tribes to treat snakebites in the Am
azon region. In Peruvian herbalism it is used as a natural remedy for gastrointe
stinal problems, respiratory ailments, HIV/AIDS, cancer, hepatitis, viral infect
ions and to enhance the immune system. It is theorized that the effects of Sacha
Jergon on snakebites and its use in treating a variety of diseases could possib
ly be due to the presence of protease inhibitors in the plant. Protease inhibito
rs prevent certain enzymes from functioning properly, and these enzymes often pl
ay key roles in diseases such as HIV as well as snake venom. No clinical studies
currently exist on Sacha Jergon. Positive research by a Peruvian doctor on the
use of Sacha Jergon to treat AIDS in combination with Una de Gato has led to wid
espread use of the tuber in South America and Europe. For immune disorders the r
ecommended dosage is 2-3 grams (1 teaspoon) 2-3 times a day. Sustainably harvest
ed in northeastern Peru.

SILENE ROOTS Silene undulata (=Silene capensis)
"Xhosa Dream Root" NEW!
In the eastern cape province of South Africa there grows a small plant known loc
ally as a wild tobacco. To the Xhosa it is a highly regarded amayeza (medicinal
herb) for cleansing. Most interesting is the use of the root among diviners as a
kind of ubulawu; an herb for manifesting vibrant and even prescient dreams that
allow ancestral communion. To this extent it is known as undlela ziimhlophe; "w
hite paths". This herb holds great potential for those who have trouble remember
ing their dreams or want greater clarity in dreams. Only the dreamstate is effec
ted, no significant alteration of waking consciousness is reported. Traditionall
y the root is pounded and stirred into water until a frothy foam forms, it is th
is foam that is then consumed. Contemporary use finds mixing 12 teaspoons of root
with water in the blender is effective to produce the foam. Chewing a small pie
ce of root (as little as 50 mg =1" matchstick size) prior to sleep can also be e
ffective, especially when done consistently for several nights. Xhosa wisdom dic
tates minimizing protein intake to experience the brightest dreams, abstinence f
rom stimulants and other psychoactives is also advised. Please note that large d
oses of the root cause nausea and are used traditionally as a safe emetic. Pharm
acological knowledge of the plant is lacking, the oneirogenic effects may be due
to saponins. We have a limited supply.

SPIRULINA Spirulina platensis
A microscopic spiral shaped blue-green ALGAE native to shallow brackish lakes. A
lso known as a cyanobacteria, 3.6 billion year old fossils attest to its longevi
ty. Esteemed as a superfood for centuries by people inhabiting the regions surro
unding Mexicos Lake Texcoco and Africas Lake Chad, Lake Nakura and Lake Rudolf. It
is one of the most heavily researched, nutritious, well rounded foods on earth.
Spirulina complements and should not be confused with the other popular edible
blue-green algae, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae -- a nutritive cerebral stimulant wil
dcrafted from Oregons Klamath Lake.
Spirulina contains 65-75% easily digested complete protein, the highest amount o
f any food. This is 3 to 4 times more than the poorly assimilable protein found
in fish, chicken and beef. It has 18 amino acids including the essential 8, over
2000 enzymes, phytonutrients, and a vast array of minerals including zinc, iron
, calcium, selenium, manganese, chromium, and iodine. Its the richest known plant
in vitamin B12, one of the top sources for the full spectrum of carotenoids, an
d is abundant in vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, D, E, K, chlorophyll, and RNA/DNA.
It is the best natural source for the potent antioxidant evercetin. It contains
sulfolipids that show promise for their anti-HIV action. A good source of essent
ial fatty acids like DHA, and next to human breast milk, its thought to be the be
st whole food source for the rare fatty acid GLA. Spirulina contains the unique
blue pigment phycocyanin -- shown to inhibit cancer, protect the kidneys and inc
rease mental capacity. Spirulinas cell wall is composed entirely of digestible mu
copolysaccharides that are credited with strong antiinflammatory action and stre
ngthening connective tissues while making them more elastic and resilient -- one
of the reasons Spirulina is loved by yogis and olympic athletes.
Regular consumption of Spirulina is fortifying to immune-function and aids diges
tion. Many people report that after eating Spirulina for several months they sun
burn less easily. Scores of scientific studies point to its usefulness in cases
of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, hepatitis, candida, and a host of
other disorders. A Russian patent has been awarded Spirulina as medicine for it
s effectiveness in treating radiation sickness in the children of Chernobyl. It
is being used in many programs to combat malnutrition in third world countries.
Spirulina is becoming increasingly popular in pet foods as its health benefits a
re seen as extending far outside the human realm.
Start with ingesting 1 tablespoon a day and work up to 4 or more over time. Larg
er amounts can be taken for cleansing, athletic performance and defending agains
t specific illness. The favorite method of ingestion is mixing with honey, juice
or smoothies. It also combines well with many other foods. Spirulina gives a gr
eat energy boost and is sustaining and detoxifying during fasts. Weve found that
consuming Spirulina daily for several months produces a subtle yet distinct shif
t in consciousness best described as a euphoric heightening of sensory awareness
.
Acre for acre, Spirulina cultivation can produce 20 times more protein than soyb
eans and 2000 times more than beef cattle with practically no environmental impa
ct. Our Spirulina is cultivated in shallow open ponds adjacent to the Pacific Oc
ean in Hawaii. The ponds are filled with fresh water and supplemented with ancie
nt, mineral rich ocean water pulled from a depth of 2000 feet. To harvest, the s
pirulina is rinsed numerous times with fresh water, filtered and dried in a low
oxygen environment by a unique patented process called Ocean Chilled Drying. Thi
s method completely eliminates any loss of nutrients, producing the finest grade
dark green powder with a mild sea vegetable taste. It has the highest carotene,
phytonutrient and enzyme content of any Spirulina. It is regularly tested by an
independent laboratory to assure that it is of top quality and totally free fro
m microbes, pesticides and other contaminants. It is certified Kosher.
To best preserve nutrients we suggest storing Spirulina in an air tight glass ja
r in the refrigerator. One pound fits into a one quart mason jar.
Please note that the grower of our Spirulina has chosen to drop their organic ce
rtification due to changes in regulations, they have not changed anything about
their growing practices, all that has changed are the organic certification regu
lations. For the complete story see the bottom of the ALGAE page.

WATER LILY FLOWERS, BLUE Nymphaea caerulea
In 1922 when the Pharoah Tutankhamens tomb was opened his body was found adorned
in Blue Water Lily flowers. Held sacred by the ancient Egyptians, the Blue Wate
r Lily was central to their creation myths and beliefs surrounding death and reb
irth. Widely and reverently depicted on ancient stelae, in texts, and in the cur
ious form of ritual chalices made in the likeness of the blossom. This mysteriou
s, divinely perfumed flower had a profound impact on Egyptian culture. Mention o
f the blue lily in the Book of the Dead makes clear its magical importance in sh
amanic transformation and suggests visionary attributes. The widespread depictio
ns were long thought to be merely symbolic, but current investigations into the
properties of the flowers have demonstrated their hypnotic and possibly visionar
y value. They were surely used in ancient Egypt for medicine and in shamanic tra
nce/healing ceremonies, although exactly how is still somewhat uncertain. Egypti
an priests had a vast knowledge of herbal plant lore, and it is likely that they
created a concoction of the lily to concentrate its psychoactivity. Artwork oft
en depicts the flowers along with mandrake fruits, poppies and palm wine, giving
us clues to their formulations. Contemporary use shows the effects of the flowe
rs to be ecstatic and sedative, very similar to the closely related White Water
Lily and Sacred Lotus. This ability of the lily to induce trance also makes it a
n effective sleep aid, mild pain killer and muscle relaxant. It is said to be ex
cellent for the skin. 1/8 -1/4 ounce can be made into tea, or soaked in sulfite
free wine or juice for 24 hours and strained. The flowers we offer are carefully
dried to retain there brilliant color and magnificent scent.

WATER LILY FLOWERS, MAYAN Nymphaea ampla
Commonly depicted in Meso-American art, especially the Classic Mayan period, oft
en in association with jaguars and visionary scenes. This beautiful white flower

id the Blue Water Lily to the Egyptians. A calming sedative and mild trance indu
cer, it is believed it was an additive to the inebriating balche drink of the Ma
ya (see Audio Recordings 033 & 115). As a demulcent it is used for ulcers and sk
in disease. Utilize like other water lilies. Carefully harvested and shade dried

YERBA MATE Ilex paraguayensis
This traditional Argentine beverage comes from the leaves of a bushy South Ameri
can tree related to the common holly. The thick, shiny leaves are rich in caffei
ne (to over 2%). The leaves are highly nutritious, said to contain nearly all th
e vitamins necessary to sustain life. They have several volatile oils present wh
ich give the tea part of its distinctive aroma and taste. The best quality produ
ct comes from a process of lightly fire roasting and curing the fresh branches t
o develop the characteristic smoky flavor prized by Yerba Mat lovers. In Paragua
y and Argentina it is the national beverage, consumed in vast quantities daily.
Much of the supply comes from wild native trees which are perfectly suited to su
stainable harvesting. It has been so highly valued that it was once considered "
green gold." The foraging industry depends on the preservation of intact forest
habitat, so the protection of South American forests is in part made necessary b
y a strong market demand for such wild collected products. Drinking Yerba Mat hel
ps protect the planets endangered habitats and supports simple forest people with
a right livelihood.
Yerba Mat is prepared in South America in a ritualized ceremony using a special g
ourd cup and straw set, in fact the word Mat specifically refers to the gourd. T
hese are often highly decorated utensils, ornamented with pure silver. The straw
or Bombilla is an ingenious hollow spoon-shaped utensil, flared at the base and
fitted with a screen which allows the brew to be strained as it is sipped. A la
rge spoonful of crushed, dried leaves is placed in the gourd cup and boiling wat
er is poured over them and left to steep for several minutes. Although coca leav
es are also popular in some Mat drinking areas of South America, it is definitely
not advisable to drink Yerba Mat while chewing coca, for the numbing effect of t
he coca leaves can lead to scalding of the lips by a sip of too-hot tea through
a hot Bombilla. Those of us without the traditional Mat apparatus can prepare an
equally fine beverage by pouring water over the herb in a teapot and straining i
nto cups after steeping.
The effects of Yerba Mat are relatively long lasting, inducing a type of mental c
larity and expansion of thought processing capabilities. A feeling of enhanced m
emory and accelerated intellect is often experienced, however the racy edge of p
hysical and mental stimulation is seldom noted. This state is especially suited
to periods of intense study, calculation and cerebral activity requiring enduran
ce to maintain continuous attention and precision focus.
Our organically harvested Yerba Mat is hand picked, naturally fired and slow-cure
d. It comes from sustainably harvested trees grown in the rainforest understory.
Yerba Mat is lower in tannins than Green Tea and contains more healthful tonic p
roperties and antioxidants. These include immune boosting saponins and polypheno
ls, 15 amino acids, 24 vitamins and minerals. Regular Mat consumption has been fo
und to reduce cholesterol, improve digestion, aid in weight loss and offer relie
f from allergies. Clinical studies suggest that individuals who are sensitive to
caffeine can drink Yerba Mat without adverse reactions. On average, one pound of
herb will last one month or so.
